Dynamic Structure Of A Nonaqueous Lamellar Liquid Crystal: Comparison With The Aqueous Case, Stig Friberg, Anthony J.I. Ward, David W. Larsen Sep 1987

Dynamic Structure Of A Nonaqueous Lamellar Liquid Crystal: Comparison With The Aqueous Case, Stig Friberg, Anthony J.I. Ward, David W. Larsen

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The lamellar phase of sodium dodecyl sulfate/decanol/glycerol has been compared to the analogous water-based system. Results of NMR studies of deuteriated alcohol and surfactant showed the bilayer to be more disordered in the nonaqueous case than in the phase made with water. The order profiles of the two systems, however, were of the same form, implying that the same essential packing requirements applied to each case. The overall increase in dynamic disorder observed in the glycerol system is a result of a transversely more disordered bilayer/solvent interface. © 1987, American Chemical Society. Polymerization In Nonaqueous Lyotropic Liquid Crystals With A Polymerizable Solvent, Stig Friberg, Chang Sup Wohn, Frances E. Lockwood

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lamellar liquid crystals of lecithin and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were polymerized by using UV radiation. Optical microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray diffraction were used to compare the structure prior to and after polymerization. The lamellar structure was retained after polymerization with increased interlayer spacing. © 1987, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Medial Axis Transform Using Ridge Following, Richard Mark Volkmann, Daniel C. St. Clair Aug 1987

Medial Axis Transform Using Ridge Following, Richard Mark Volkmann, Daniel C. St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

The intent of this investigation has been to find a robust algorithm for generation of the medial axis transform (MAT). The MAT is an invertible, object centered, shape representation defined as the collection of the centers of disks contained in the shape but not in any other such disk. Its uses include feature extraction, shape smoothing, and data compression. MAT generating algorithms include brushfire, Voronoi diagrams, and ridge following. An improved implementation of the ridge following algorithm is given. Orders of the MAT generating algorithms are compared. The effects of the number of edges in the polygonal approximation, shape area, …

Intensional Reasoning About Knowledge, Oliver B. Popov, Arlan R. Dekock Aug 1987

Intensional Reasoning About Knowledge, Oliver B. Popov, Arlan R. Dekock

Computer Science Technical Reports

As demands and ambitions increase in Artificial Intelligence, the need for formal systems that facilitate a study and a simulation of a machine cognition has become an inevitability. This paper explores and developes the foundations of a formal system for propositional reasoning about knowledge. The semantics of every meaningful expression in the system is fully determined by its intension, the set of complexes in which the expression is confirmed. The knowledge system is based on three zeroth-order theories of epistemic reasoning for consciousness, knowledge and entailed knowledge. The results presented in the paper determine the soundness and the completeness of …

Calculation Of The Thermophysical Properties Of Ground State Sodium Atoms, Paul M. Holland, Louis Biolsi Jr. Jul 1987

Calculation Of The Thermophysical Properties Of Ground State Sodium Atoms, Paul M. Holland, Louis Biolsi Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Transport properties of dilute monatomic gases depend on the two body interaction potentials between the atoms. When two ground state sodium atoms interact, they can follow either of two potential energy curves corresponding to the Na2 molecule in the X1Σ+g or the 3Σ+u. Transport collision integrals and second virial coefficients of monatomic sodium have been calculated by accurately representing quantum mechanical potential energy curves with the Hulburt-Hirschfelder potential. The generally good agreement of calculated viscosities and second virial coefficients with the available experimental viscosities and with previously calculated virial coefficients provides …

Nucleation And Growth Of Zinc Electrodeposited From Acidic Zinc Solutions, A. C. Beshore, B. J. Flori, G. Schade, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The nucleation and initial crystal growth kinetics by electrodeposition from acidic zinc solutions was studied in the absence and presence of antimony and glue on a glassy carbon electrode. Zinc exhibits instantaneous nucleation under the experimental conditions employed in the potential region from -1600 to -2000 mV (mercurous sulphate reference). At low overpotentials antimony and glue increase the number of nuclei. © 1987 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

Measurement Of The Condensation Coefficient Of Water In The Umr Cloud Simulation Chamber, Daniel R. White, James L. Kassner, John C. Carstens, Donald E. Hagen, John L. Schmitt, Darryl J. Alofs, A. R. Hopkins, Max B. Trueblood, M. W. Alcorn Jun 1987

Measurement Of The Condensation Coefficient Of Water In The Umr Cloud Simulation Chamber, Daniel R. White, James L. Kassner, John C. Carstens, Donald E. Hagen, John L. Schmitt, Darryl J. Alofs, A. R. Hopkins, Max B. Trueblood, M. W. Alcorn

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements of the condensation coefficient of water under conditions closely approximating those in natural atmospheric cloud have been made in the cooled-wall UMR cloud simulation chamber. Current measurements disclose a value of condensation coefficient near unity at the outset of the experiment, generally decreasing to lower values (~ .01) as the experiment progresses. The significance of the magnitude of condensation coefficient in atmospheric cloud is briefly discussed.

Design Of Automotive Structural Components Using High Strength Sheet Steels Structural Behavior Of Members Consisting Of Flat And Curved Elements, M. Brad Parks, Wei-Wen Yu Jun 1987

Design Of Automotive Structural Components Using High Strength Sheet Steels Structural Behavior Of Members Consisting Of Flat And Curved Elements, M. Brad Parks, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Local buckling of stiffened and unstiffened curved elements has been investigated both experimentally and analytically. Stiffened curved elements are supported along both longitudinal edges while unstiffened curved elements are supported along one longitudinal edge with the other longitudinal edge free. A series of stub column, beam, and shear tests have been performed for sections containing curved elements. The tested specimens were formed from sheet steels with yield strengths ranging from 27 to 88 ksi. The radius-to-thickness, R/t, values of the curved elements varied from 12 to 438 whereas the arc length-to-thickness, b/t, ratios ranged from 23 to 218. As a …

Power Division By Element Design In A Circularly Polarized, Series-Fed Array, James L. Drewniak, P. E. Mayes Jun 1987

Power Division By Element Design In A Circularly Polarized, Series-Fed Array, James L. Drewniak, P. E. Mayes

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The feasibility of designing a wideband circular polarized (CP) array of series-fed elements using the element geometry to control the array excitation has been demonstrated. The simple array of wideband, low-profile CP elements requires no phase-shifters and only sufficient feed lines for the interconnection of the elements in a series-fed array. A complicated network is not required to obtain the excitation coefficients for a specified design. Rather, the excitation coefficients can be realized by utilizing the geometric parameters of the individual elements.

Ethernet Performance: Design And Implementation Study, Michael M. Chaney, Tachen L. Lo, Daniel C. St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

General concepts concerning local area network designs, functions and topologies will be presented. Ethernet as a multipoint bus topology local area network will be presented in detail. The Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detect (CSMA/CD) method of fairly regulating access to the shared network bus is studied. The Ethernet Network in relation to the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) is reviewed, but only the layers pertaining to Ethernet are discussed throughout the majority of the paper. The specifications as described by Xerox, Digital and Intel are presented to help the designer understand the network's physical limitations. Analytical models are used to predict …

A Representation For Serial Robotic Tasks, Barry Ross Fox, Arlan R. Dekock May 1987

A Representation For Serial Robotic Tasks, Barry Ross Fox, Arlan R. Dekock

Computer Science Technical Reports

The representation for serial robotic tasks proposed in this thesis is a language of temporal constraints derived directly from a model of the space of serial plans. It was specifically designed to encompass problems that include disjunctive ordering constraints. This guarantees that the proposed language can completely and, to a certain extent, compactly represent all possible serial robotic tasks. The generality of this language carries a penalty. The proposed language of temporal constraints is NP-Complete. Specific methods have been demonstrated for normalizing constraints posed in this language in order to make subsequent sequencing and analysis more tractable. Using this language, …

The Graduate Center for Cloud Physics Research at UMR has developed a cloud simulation facility to study phenomena occurring in terrestrial clouds and fogs. The facility consists of a pair of precision cooled-wall expansion chambers along with extensive supporting equipment. The smaller of these chambers, described in this article, is fully operational, and is capable of simulating a broad range of in-cloud thermodynamic conditions. It is currently being used to study water drop growth and evaporation for drops nucleated (activated) on well-characterized aerosol particles. Measurements have been made not only for continuous expansions (simulated updraft) but also for cyclic conditions, …

Effects Of Topic Knowledge On The Allocation Of Processing Time And Cognitive Effort To Writing Processes, Ronald Thomas Kellogg May 1987

Effects Of Topic Knowledge On The Allocation Of Processing Time And Cognitive Effort To Writing Processes, Ronald Thomas Kellogg

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conditions of low and high knowledge about the topic of a writing task were compared in terms of the time and cognitive effort allocated to writing processes. These processes were planning ideas, translating ideas into text, and reviewing ideas and text during document composition. Directed retrospection provided estimates of the time devoted to each process, and secondary task reaction times indexed the cognitive effort expended. Topic knowledge was manipulated by selecting subjects in Experiment 1 and by selecting topics in Experiment 2. The retrospection results indicated that both low- and high-knowledge writers intermixed planning, translating, and reviewing during all phases …

The Aminolysis Of N-Hydroxysuccinimide Esters. A Structure-Reactivity Study, Gary W. Cline, Samir B. Hanna

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Twelve amines, which vary substantially in basicity and in steric environment around N, have been allowed to compete—in anhydrous dioxane solution—in the aminolysis of the N-hydroxysuccinimide esters of unsubstituted, p-OCH3, p-N02, and 3,5-(N02)2 benzoic acids. The amines, which encompass a basicity range of 6.5 pk units, display a 10000-fold variation in reactivity in their reaction with the p-N02ester. for the sterically unhindered amines, a Bronsted-type plot of log kobsdvs. pKa has a slope of ~0.7. Separated Resonances In Simultaneous Capture And Excitation Of S¹⁵⁺ In H₂ Observed By K-X-Ray K-X-Ray Coincidences, Michael Schulz, Edson L B Justiniano, Reinhold S. Schuch, Paul H. Mokler, S. Reusch Apr 1987

Separated Resonances In Simultaneous Capture And Excitation Of S¹⁵⁺ In H₂ Observed By K-X-Ray K-X-Ray Coincidences, Michael Schulz, Edson L B Justiniano, Reinhold S. Schuch, Paul H. Mokler, S. Reusch

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured cross sections for the correlated emission of two K x rays following the collision of hydrogenlike sulfur ions with H2 in the energy range between 70 and 160 MeV. The observation of the two correlated x rays is interpreted as a resonant capture of a target electron accompanied by simultaneous excitation of the projectile in the collision (RTE). By our distinguishing between Kα and Kβ lines, contributions from KLL and KLn (n≥M) resonances could be determined independently.

Transport Anisotropy And Percolation In The Two-Dimensional Random-Hopping Model, Kalyan P. Kundu, Paul Ernest Parris, Philip W. Phillips Mar 1987

Transport Anisotropy And Percolation In The Two-Dimensional Random-Hopping Model, Kalyan P. Kundu, Paul Ernest Parris, Philip W. Phillips

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider hopping transport on an anisotropic two-dimensional square lattice. The displacements parallel to one axis are governed by uniform, nearest-neighbor hopping rates c, while the displacements parallel to the other axis are governed by static but spatially fluctuating rates wn. Adapting a new class of generating functions recently introduced for the random-trapping problem, we are able to obtain expressions for the mean-square displacement in the fluctuating direction through an exact decoupling of the effects due to displacements in the uniform direction. The resulting expressions for the low-frequency diffusion coefficient D(ε) are exact in the limits c →0 …
