The Affects Of Butyl Acetate And Acetone On Plexiglass, Tracy E. Downs May 1994

The Affects Of Butyl Acetate And Acetone On Plexiglass, Tracy E. Downs

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The actions that solvents take on polymers was the focus of the summer 1993 research. There were two goals: one was to measure the distances between the cracks that formed in the plexiglass and two was to determine the time of arrival of the cracks. Two solvents, butyl acetate and acetone were used to generate data on polymethyl methacrylate (PMNA/Plexiglass).

The measurement of the time of arrival of a crack was another goal. This quantity is related to the growth of the fractures. This was difficult since only a localized portion of the plexiglass sample could be viewed.

Automation Of The Electrostatic Aerosol Classifier And The Continuous Flow Cloud Diffusion Chamber, Daron W. Dryer

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Analyzing cloud condensation nuclei through the use of a Continuous Flow Thermal Diffusion Cloud Chamber (CFD) and an Electrostatic Aerosol Classifier (EAC) can be very time consuming. An alternative to manually monitoring these devices is to automate the equipment, thus freeing personnel for other research as well increasing CCN data collection.

Automation of the EAC will be carried out by digital command through the use of a Quick Basic program. This program will be run from an IBM personal computer outfitted with a digital input/output board.

RS-485 Standard will also be incorporated into the Quick Basic program in order to …

An Assessment Of The "An/Ex" Structural Engineering Teaching Laboratory, Gregory E. Effland May 1994

An Assessment Of The "An/Ex" Structural Engineering Teaching Laboratory, Gregory E. Effland

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

An innovation in teaching structural analysis, the "AN/EX" Structural Model Laboratory, has been implemented into the civil engineering curriculum at UMR. The purpose of the AN/EX innovation is to give the students a "hands-on" lab in structural engineering that will help correct some of the deficiencies currently found in engineering design education. In an effort to determine the effectiveness of the "AN/EX" Laboratory at correcting some of the education deficiencies, a rigorous, semester long assessment was conducted. This assessment included an attitude assessment and an ability assessment. The methods and results of both assessments are provided in this report.

Relaxation Technique For The Fitting Of Numerical Data, Michael J. Lehmann May 1994

Relaxation Technique For The Fitting Of Numerical Data, Michael J. Lehmann

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Data, in particular that generated through successive computer approximations, may not always follow the smooth curve it is suppose to. Approximations in input data, round off error, and estimations made in the mathematical formulas, are just some of the things that could cause this problem. In any respect, this data must somehow be smoothed or fitted for publication. One way of fitting such data sets is the relaxation method. This method does not rely on the data conforming to a specific mathematical shape, as opposed to other programs that require the data to be fitable by some mathematically generated curve. …

Forced Convective Diffusion And Interphase Heat And Mass Transfer: Computations Of Radial Functions, Temperature And Concentration Fields, And Presentation Of Local And Average Nusselt And Sherwood Numbers, Stephen Myers, X B. Reed Jr., N. Y. Shah, A. E. Penn May 1994

Y. Shah, A. E. Penn

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Theoretical calculations have been carried out for forced convective transport for uniform streaming and uniaxial and biaxial extensional axisymmetric flows past single spheres. Homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reactions, both of first and of second order have also been or are presently being treated. Orthogonality and other properties of Legendre functions have been used, together with introduction of an eigenfunction expansion, to reduce the mathematical description from a partial differential equation with variable coefficients, which is nonlinear for homogeneous second order chemical reactions, to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations for the radial modes. The numerical solutions of the latter …

Ccd Photometry At The Umr Observatory, Christopher P. Smith May 1994

Ccd Photometry At The Umr Observatory, Christopher P. Smith

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

During the summer of 1993 a number of advances at the University of Missouri-Rolla’s observatory have taken place. These advances range from cleaning the mirrors and polar aligning the 16-inch Cassegrain telescope to the acquisition of needed supporting material. A program for observing variable stars, implementing the newly acquired CCD1R image reduction program, searching galaxies for supernova, and the possibility of adding low resolution stellar spectroscopy to our research capabilities will be discussed. This manual will discuss how to implement the new CCDIR program.

A Computer Graphic Teaching Aid For The Synthesis Of Four-Bar Linkages, Sew K. Woon May 1994

A Computer Graphic Teaching Aid For The Synthesis Of Four-Bar Linkages, Sew K. Woon

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This project involves developing software for the use as a teaching tool in the classroom. The "four-bar linkage mechanism", often used in kinematic movement, is the main subject

The software provides a working environment to perform a graphical synthesis of a four- bar linkage to move one of the links through three specified positions in the plane. The construction process is facilitated by the built in kinematic intelligence so that the student can quickly and easily visualize the process. The construction lines are dynamically updated as the free parameters in the design are modified. This is particularly beneficial because it …

Behavior Of Web Elements With Openings Subjected To Bending, Shear And The Combination Of Bending And Shear, Ming-Yang Shan, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE The current design criteria for cold-formed steel members published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (1986,1991) do not provide sufficient information for the design of web elements with openings. The primary objective of this investigation was to study the structural behavior of cold-formed steel C-sections with web openings. This study deals with the structural behavior of beam webs subjected to bending moment, shear force and combined bending moment and shear force. This report presents a summary of experimental study and findings of analytical results. The test results indicate that the current AISI Specification does not account for the …

Macrocyclic Antibiotics As A New Class Of Chiral Selectors For Liquid Chromatography, Daniel W. Armstrong, Yublng Tang, Shushi Chen, Yiwen Zhou, Christina Bagwlll, Jing Ran Chen

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are a large number of antibiotic macrocycles which include several different structural types. Three representative macrocyclic compounds were covalently linked to silica gel and evaluated by HPLC for their ability to resolve racemic mixtures as well as for their stability and loadability. Over 70 compounds were resolved. In some cases separations were achieved that have not been reported on any other chiral stationary phase (CSP). These stationary phases appear to be multimodal in that they can be used in both the normal-phase and reversed-phase modes. Different compounds are resolved in each mode. There does not appear to be any …

PREFACE Experimental studies were preformed to investigate the tensile capacity, bearing capacity and the interaction of tension and bearing capacities of flat sheet cold-formed steel bolted connections. The effect of bolt hole deformation on the bearing capacity of bolted connections, was also investigated. In the experimental investigation, single shear flat sheet connections were investigated for single bolt and multiple bolt configurations. The intent of this investigation was to compare the current AISI and AISC Specifications for the nominal bearing and tensile capacities and to develop appropriate serviceability design criteria. A review and evaluation of past research on the tensile and …

Structural Behavior Of Perforated Web Elements Of Cold-Formed Steel Flexural Members Subjected To Web Crippling And A Combination Of Web Crippling And Bending, James E. Langan, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu May 1994

Structural Behavior Of Perforated Web Elements Of Cold-Formed Steel Flexural Members Subjected To Web Crippling And A Combination Of Web Crippling And Bending, James E. Langan, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE A study of structural behavior was conducted and design equations were developed that account for the degradation in web crippling capacity caused by web openings for single web cold-formed steel flexural members. The sections were subjected to a concentrated load applied to one flange. The load application satisfied the AISI definition for either End-One-Flange or Interior-One-Flange loading. The research findings enable the current design provisions for sections without web openings to be modified by a reduction factor equation to obtain the web crippling capacity for sections with web openings. The modified capacity is considered for the web crippling capacity …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Crystallographic and electrical characterization techniques were performed on CdTe single crystal samples grown by the sublimation and physical vapor transport (SPVT) technique. The SPVT growth process described here has resulted in the routine growth of 45-50 mm diameter, 250-300 g boules of single crystal CdTe. As-grown material is p-type in the 5-10 ω cm range. Etch pit densities (EPD) are nominally 7x104 cm-2 along the [111] growth direction and 3x104 cm-2 along the [111] direction. X-ray full width at half maximum (FWHM) on recent samples is 8.6 arc sec compared to 8.5 arc sec theoretical. The as-grown p-type material displays …

Using The Id3 Symbolic Classification Algorithm To Reduce Data Density, Barry Fiachsbart, Daniel C. St. Clair, Jeff Holland Apr 1994

Using The Id3 Symbolic Classification Algorithm To Reduce Data Density, Barry Fiachsbart, Daniel C. St. Clair, Jeff Holland

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective data reduction is mandatory for modeling complex domains. The work described here demonstrates how to use a symbolic classifier algorithm from machine learning to effectively reduce large amounts of data. The algorithm, Quirdan's ID3, uses input data records and corresponding classifications to produce a decision tree. The resulting tree can be used to classify previously unseen inputs. Alternatively, the attributes found in the tree can be used as the basis to develop other system modeling techniques such as neural networks or mathematical programming algorithms. This approach has been used to effectively reduce data from a large complex domain. The …

Classification Characteristics Of Som And Art2, J. J. Aleshunas, Daniel C. St. Clair, William E. Bond Apr 1994

Classification Characteristics Of Som And Art2, J. J. Aleshunas, Daniel C. St. Clair, William E. Bond

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Artificial neural network algorithms were originally designed to model human neural activities. They attempt to recreate the processes involved in such activities as learning, short term memory, and long-term memory. Two widely used unsupervised artificial neural network algorithms are the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART2). Each was designed to simulate a particular biological neural activity. Both can be used as unsupervised data classifiers. This paper compares performance characteristics of two unsupervised artificial neural network architectures; the SOM and the ART2 networks. The primary factors analyzed were classification accuracy, sensitivity to data noise, and sensitivity of the algorithm …

Generating Indexing Functions Of Regularly Sparse Arrays For Array Compilers, Scott Thibault, Lenore Mullin, Matt Insall Apr 1994

Generating Indexing Functions Of Regularly Sparse Arrays For Array Compilers, Scott Thibault, Lenore Mullin, Matt Insall

Computer Science Technical Reports

There are many applications involving arrays that contain non-zero components in regular geometric partitions. These include triangular, diagonal, tridiagonal, banded, etc. When computing with this type of arrays, they are usually stored in a packed form and computations are performed with only the non-zero components. This packed form requires an indexing function that maps an index of the array to an index of the packed lexico-graphically stored array. This paper presents a method of describing regular partitions and of automatically generating an indexing function from that description. These methods enable an array compiler to compile array operations on these type …

Spin-Resolved (E,2e) Coincidences For Heavy Rare-Gas Targets, Stephenie J. Jones, Don H. Madison, G. Friedrich Hanne Apr 1994

Spin-Resolved (E,2e) Coincidences For Heavy Rare-Gas Targets, Stephenie J. Jones, Don H. Madison, G. Friedrich Hanne

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It has been well established that the Coulomb force alone can produce spin-dependent effects for electron-impact excitation of heavy rare-gas atoms if the incident electrons are spin polarized and the final J state of the atom is resolved. This effect has become known as the fine-structure effect. Here we demonstrate that the same type of effect may be expected for electron-impact ionization.

A Powerful And Computationally Efficient Algorithm For Transmission Loss Calculation, Anoop Nanda, David V. Uy, J. Nanda, E. Khan, Mariesa Crow Apr 1994

A Powerful And Computationally Efficient Algorithm For Transmission Loss Calculation, Anoop Nanda, David V. Uy, J. Nanda, E. Khan, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper deals with the formulation of transmission loss PL of a power system through a set of new coefficients (A coefficients) which are extremely efficient, exact and robust and suitable for real time application. Results on a few IEEE test systems are exciting and encouraging. They demonstrate that these A coefficients faithfully represent the system loss, are extremely robust and need not be re-evaluated for changes in the system loading conditions either for evaluation of system loss or cost of generation for economic load dispatch.

Modified Recycled Glass As An Additive In Coatings Applications, Garth D. Brown Mar 1994

Modified Recycled Glass As An Additive In Coatings Applications, Garth D. Brown

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The feasibility of using chemically modified, finely pulverized recycled glass as an additive in coatings was investigated. The ground glass was added as partial replacement for the conventional pigment titanium dioxide (TiO2). The loss of TiO2 pigment was compensated with an optical brightening agent (OB agents). OB agents can help contribute to a coating’s hiding capacity by absorbing light in the UV range, releasing light of a lower energy in the visible spectrum. Glass supplemented coatings were formulated and common paint tests were performed. The glass changed the optical and physical properties of the coating formulations. The …

A Design Methodology For A Multi-Fpga Based Rapid Prototyping System, William Eatherton Mar 1994

A Design Methodology For A Multi-Fpga Based Rapid Prototyping System, William Eatherton

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The movement of universities from university-created digital design software to commercial design tools has resulted in a need for a revision of existing rapid prototyping systems. The rapid prototyping system created at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and centered on a FPGA-based board (called the Anyboard), was revised to use Mentor Graphics, a sophisticated industrial EDA tool, rather than board specific software. To provide a guide for future students at UMR and other schools using the Anyboard, an example design was created with Mentor Graphics to route data between a PC bus, SRAMs, and an arithmetic logic unit.

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly (1,1'-Divinyl-2,2’-Biimidazole), Timothy S. Evenson

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The monomer 1,1 ,-divinyl-2,2’-biimidazole was prepared using a previously published procedure (1). The new divinyl biimidazole polymer was then synthesized from this monomer. The polymer was characterized by infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Nuclear magnetic resonance confirms the structure of the polymer. Also, gel permeation chromatography was used to determine molecular weight, while differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the glass transition temperature and crystalline melting point of the polymer.

The Feasibility Of Using Piezoelectric Flap Actuation In The Active Control Of Flutter, Aaron Laws Mar 1994

The Feasibility Of Using Piezoelectric Flap Actuation In The Active Control Of Flutter, Aaron Laws

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Wing flutter is one of the most important and dangerous phenomenon faced by aircraft structural design engineers. Flutter is a self exciting aeroelastic phenomenon in which portions of an aircraft structure begin to oscillate with exponentially growing amplitudes, produced by the changing aerodynamic forces and moments brought about by the deformation of the structure. There exists a characteristic flight speed, known as the flutter speed, where the structure exhibits sustained harmonic motion, ie. zero damping. Below this velocity, the vibration of the structure due to a perturbation will decrease exponentially, while above this velocity, the vibration will increase exponentially, eventually …

Verification Of The Isolation Of The Chalcone Isomerase Gene From Glycine Max, Larry D. Polk Mar 1994

Verification Of The Isolation Of The Chalcone Isomerase Gene From Glycine Max, Larry D. Polk

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

In this paper we report the verified isolation of the gene encoding the flavonoid-biosynthetic enzyme chalcone flavonone isomerase (CHI) from Glycine max as well as the procedures used to generate the results. We began by electroeluting an 865 base pair (bp) Hindlll fragment from pCHIl. We then restricted the pDRIO plasmid with Hindlll. In order to test for homology, we hybridized the pDRIO fragment with nick translated pCHIl fragment as a probe. For a second electrophoresis experiment, we cut pDRIO with EcoRI and Hindlll. We also restricted several different pDRIO plasmids with a variety of deletions. After performing a Southern …
