Role Of In-Situ Testing In Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, M. Jamiolkowski, D.C. F. Lopresti, O. Pallara

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The available in situ testing techniques of special relevance in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering are subject to a synthetic review in the light of the general framework of soil stress-strain behavior. Especial attention is devoted to the recent innovations and current capabilities of in situ testing methods to assess the shear modulus G and damping ratio D. The determination of the undrained steady state shear strength via penetration and seismic tests is also discussed.

Simple Methods For The Seismic Response Of Piles Applied To Soil-Pile-Bridge Interaction, George Gazetas, George Mylonakis, Aspasia Nikolaou Apr 1995

Simple Methods For The Seismic Response Of Piles Applied To Soil-Pile-Bridge Interaction, George Gazetas, George Mylonakis, Aspasia Nikolaou

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A multi-step procedure is outlined for a complete seismic soil-pile-structure interaction analysis, within the format of kinematic and inertial decomposition. Vertical S-wave propagation is considered and the pile-to-pile interplay is treated with sufficient rigor. The method has been implemented for the seismic analysis of bridge piers founded on piles in multilayered soil; a computer code (SBIAP) has been developed to this end. A parameter study (in both frequency and tune domains) illustrates the capability of the method to predict displacements and accelerations of the superstructure as well as bending moments and shear and axial forces in the piles. The importance …

Design And Behavior Of Tailings Dams Under Seismic Conditions, Jorge H. Troncoso Apr 1995

Design And Behavior Of Tailings Dams Under Seismic Conditions, Jorge H. Troncoso

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Seismic design of tailings dams in present times has to provide satisfactory solutions to fulfill environmental protection requirements and to assure proper behavior after closure and abandonment. The requirements to protect the environment include control of seepage and other forms of pollution of the air, waters and soils, under normal conditions, and also under the most extreme events which may be foreseen to occur. The worst possible form of pollution under such extreme conditions is a liquefaction failure involving breaching of the dam and flooding of the valleys downstream. The probability of occurrence of maximum events obviously increases with the …

Performance Of Landfills Under Seismic Loading, D. G. Anderson, E. Kavazanjian Jr. Apr 1995

Performance Of Landfills Under Seismic Loading, D. G. Anderson, E. Kavazanjian Jr.

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The record of performance of landfills in earthquakes is excellent. However, the advent of geosynthetic liner and cover systems has increased the susceptibility of modern landfills to seismically-induced instability and deformations. Analyses used to assess the performance of landfills in earthquakes include site response, limit equilibrium stability, and Newmark deformation analyses. Well documented case histories of the behavior of landfills subject to seismic loading are necessary to improve knowledge of the parameters required for these analyses and thereby enhance the reliability of seismic performance evaluations for landfills.

Dynamic Soil Pressures On Vertical Walls, Anestis S. Veletsos, Adel H. Younan Apr 1995

Dynamic Soil Pressures On Vertical Walls, Anestis S. Veletsos, Adel H. Younan

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A summary is presented of recently contributed simple approximate solutions for the dynamic pressures and the associated forces induced by ground shaking on rigid vertical walls. The walls are presumed to be either straight or circular in plan and to retain a uniform viscoelastic soil stratum of constant thickness and infinite extent in the horizontal direction. Both the walls and the stratum are considered to be supported on a non-deformable base undergoing a space-invariant, uniform horizontal motion. The effects of both harmonic and earthquake-induced excitations are examined, and comprehensive numerical data ate presented which elucidate the underlying response mechanisms and …

Preliminary Report On The Damage Of Buildings And Houses Due To The Great Hanshin (Kobe) Earthquake Of January 17, 1995, Yoshihiro Sugimura, Madan B. Karkee

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

More than 5,400 persons were killed during the great Hanshin earthquake that occurred early in the morning (5:46 a.m.) of January 17, 1995. About 90% of the dead, most of which were aged persons, were crushed under wooden houses and other residential buildings damaged by the strong shock. People could not escape falling ceilings and furnitures because they were still in their sleep. In addition, the shock produced by the active fault directly under the area was very sudden. Markedly heavy damage was concentrated in the approximately 500m wide belt region lying between the Rokko base rock zone and the …

Soil Amplification In Great Hanshin Earthquake, Takeji Kokusho, Kiyotaka Sato Apr 1995

Soil Amplification In Great Hanshin Earthquake, Takeji Kokusho, Kiyotaka Sato

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

During this earthquake, strong acceleration records were obtained in free fields in many sites in and around the Kobe city. Some of the recording sites consist of multi-level vertical arrays, which demonstrated very peculiar features of seismic amplification in reclaimed lands and Holocene and Pleistocene soil layers. Particularly it has been found that, when the max acceleration at the depth of 80-100m exceeds 200-300 cm/s2, the upper layer will not amplify the acceleration anymore except for the shallowest layer in most case.

Changes Of Yield Stress Of Sand During Undrained Cyclic Loading, Y. Tanaka, K. Shirakawa Apr 1995

Changes Of Yield Stress Of Sand During Undrained Cyclic Loading, Y. Tanaka, K. Shirakawa

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In this study, the yield locus of sand being subjected to several cycles of undrained loading was investigated by using the triaxial testing device capable of measuring the acoustic emission, AE, of soil. The AE measurement indicates that the undrained shear on isotropically consolidated sand changes the shape of yield locus so as to have more kinematic hardening type of yield locus. More importantly, a change occurred in the size of yield locus, and the undrained loading has reduced the size of yield locus. Subsequent undrained cyclic loadings further reduced the size of yield locus so that there were some …

Settlements Of Breakwater On Soft Seabed Ground Under Ocean Waves, J. Zhou, K. Yasuhara

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A procedure for predicting the wave induced excess pore water pressure and residual strain of clay using the results of cyclic triaxial tests on the reconstituted Ariake clay is described. Thereafter, the results of a numerical analysis by a 2-D dynamic effective stress FEM for a breakwater on a soft clay are presented.

Earth Pressure Variations Under Cyclic Surcharges, S. M. Mir Mohammad Hosseini Apr 1995

Earth Pressure Variations Under Cyclic Surcharges, S. M. Mir Mohammad Hosseini

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

There are a tremendous studies in literature about the earth pressure, most of them are concentrated on the static loading conditions. The problems of earth pressure under dynamic loadings are still the case of studies. In this paper the results of an experimental studies about variations of earth pressure at rest under different vertical cyclic loadings are presented. Cubical soil samples of 15 cm dimensions were subjected to vertical cyclic stresses and induced lateral pressure behind the rigid side walls of the soil were measured accurately. A dry and uniform sand was used and the samples were prepared by the …

Efficiency Of An Energy-Dissipating Barrier, M. P. Luong Apr 1995

Efficiency Of An Energy-Dissipating Barrier, M. P. Luong

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The proposed paper describes some experimental procedures, used in (a) laboratory to recognize the energy-dissipating ability of soil and (b) in centrifuge to generate in-flight stress waves propagating through a centrifugal soil mass in order to investigate the efficiency of a stress wave mitigation barrier. The screening principle of this new type of energy-dissipating barrier has been suggested by the dissipative behavior of sandy soils, evidenced by infrared vibrothermography.

Soil-Pile-Structure During Liquefaction On Centrifuge, Masayoshi Sato, Yasuhiro Shamoto, Jian-Min Zhang Apr 1995

Soil-Pile-Structure During Liquefaction On Centrifuge, Masayoshi Sato, Yasuhiro Shamoto, Jian-Min Zhang

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Larger scale dynamic centrifuge modeling has been used to examine the behavior of a soilpile-structure system during earthquake-induced liquefaction. The model consisting of a 3 x 3-pile supported structure and a saturated sand deposit was constructed in a laminar container with the inside dimensions of 74-cm length, 50-cm height and 34-cm width. Test results show that liquefaction occurred only within a finite zone in the saturated sand deposit subjected to a strong input shaking that corresponds to a maximum earthquake acceleration of 0.3 g induced probably in actual ground, which agrees well with the results of earthquake damage investigation; moreover, …
