Imaging The Anisotropic Nonlinear Meissner Effect In Nodal Yba ₂Cu₃O7-Δ Thin-Film Superconductors, Alexander P. Zhuravel, Behnood G. Ghamsari, Cihan Kurter, Philipp Jung, Stephen K. Remillard, John A. Abrahams, Alexander V. Lukashenko, Alexey V. Ustinov, Steven Mark Anlage

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have directly imaged the anisotropic nonlinear Meissner effect in an unconventional superconductor through the nonlinear electrodynamic response of both (bulk) gap nodes and (surface) Andreev bound states. A superconducting thin film is patterned into a compact self-resonant spiral structure, excited near resonance in the radio-frequency range, and scanned with a focused laser beam perturbation. At low temperatures, direction-dependent nonlinearities in the reactive and resistive properties of the resonator create photoresponse that maps out the directions of nodes, or of bound states associated with these nodes, on the Fermi surface of the superconductor. The method is demonstrated on the nodal …

Nanobubble Column Flotation For More Efficient Coal Recovery, Ahmed Sobhy, R. Honaker, D. Tao Feb 2013

Nanobubble Column Flotation For More Efficient Coal Recovery, Ahmed Sobhy, R. Honaker, D. Tao

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 μm for coal and 10 to 100 μm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal).

This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 μm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from …

Einstein@Home All-Sky Search For Periodic Gravitational Waves In Ligo S5 Data, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents results of an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range [50,1 190] Hz and with frequency derivative range of ∼[-20,1.1] x 10-10 Hz s-1 for the fifth LIGO science run (S5). The search uses a noncoherent Hough-transform method to combine the information from coherent searches on time scales of about one day. Because these searches are very computationally intensive, they have been carried out with the Einstein@Home volunteer distributed computing project. Postprocessing identifies eight candidate signals; deeper follow-up studies rule them out. Hence, since no gravitational wave signals have been found, we …

Pore Geometry Effects On Intrapore Viscous To Inertial Flows And On Effective Hydraulic Parameters, Kuldeep Chaudhary, M. Bayani Cardenas, Wen Deng, Philip C. Bennett Feb 2013

Pore Geometry Effects On Intrapore Viscous To Inertial Flows And On Effective Hydraulic Parameters, Kuldeep Chaudhary, M. Bayani Cardenas, Wen Deng, Philip C. Bennett

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, the effects of different diverging-converging pore geometries were investigated, and the microscale fluid flow and effective hydraulic properties from these pores were compared with that of a pipe from viscous to inertial laminar flow regimes. The flow fields are obtained using computational fluid dynamics, and the comparative analysis is based on a new dimensionless hydraulic shape factor β, which is the "specific surface" scaled by the length of pores. Results from all diverging-converging pores show an inverse pattern in velocity and vorticity distributions relative to the pipe flow. The hydraulic conductivity K of all pores is …

Link Between Cancer And Alzheimer Disease Via Oxidative Stress Induced By Nitric Oxide-Dependent Mitochondrial Dna Overproliferation And Deletion, Gjumrakch Aliev, Mark E. Obrenovich, Shams Tabrez, Nasimudeen R. Jabir, Prakash Reddy, Yi Li, Geoffrey Burnstock, Ramon Cacabelos, Mohammad Amjad Kamal

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nitric oxide- (NO-) dependent oxidative stress results in mitochondrial ultrastructural alterations and DNA damage in cases of Alzheimer disease (AD). However, little is known about these pathways in human cancers, especially during the development as well as the progression of primary brain tumors and metastatic colorectal cancer. One of the key features of tumors is the deficiency in tissue energy that accompanies mitochondrial lesions and formation of the hypoxic smaller sized mitochondria with ultrastructural abnormalities. We speculate that mitochondrial involvement may play a significant role in the etiopathogenesis of cancer. Recent studies also demonstrate a potential link between AD and …

Particle Shape Enhances Specificity Of Antibody-Displaying Nanoparticles, Sutapa Barua, Jin-Wook Yoo, Poornima Kolhar, Aditya Wakankar, Yatin R. Gokarn, Samir Mitragotri

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Monoclonal antibodies are used in numerous therapeutic and diagnostic applications; however, their efficacy is contingent on specificity and avidity. Here, we show that presentation of antibodies on the surface of nonspherical particles enhances antibody specificity as well as avidity toward their targets. Using spherical, rod-, and disk-shaped polystyrene nano- and microparticles and trastuzumab as the targeting antibody, we studied specific and nonspecific uptake in three breast cancer cell lines: BT-474, SK-BR-3, and MDA-MB-231. Rods exhibited higher specific uptake and lower nonspecific uptake in all cells compared with spheres. This surprising interplay between particle shape and antibodies originates from the unique …

Recent research has been conducted to evaluate the benefits provided by externally applied discrete fiber-reinforced polyurea (DFRP) coating systems. This coating was proposed to allow for ease of construction in repair-retrofit situations and to provide multihazard benefits, ranging from blast or impact fragmentation mitigation to seismic reinforcement and general strengthening. This phase of research investigated the flexural and shear reinforcement capabilities of the systems. Testing parameters included type of structural failure, polyurea, and fiber volume fraction. Additionally, the effects of the thickness of the composite system were considered. Concrete beam specimens were fabricated and coated per the designed test matrix …

Background: Blue-gray ovoids (B-GOs), a critical dermoscopic structure for basal cell carcinoma (BCC), offer an opportunity for automatic detection of BCC. Due to variation in size and color, B-GOs can be easily mistaken for similar structures in benign lesions. Analysis of these structures could afford accurate characterization and automatic recognition of B-GOs, furthering the goal of automatic BCC detection. This study utilizes a novel segmentation method to discriminate B-GOs from their benign mimics.

Methods: Contact dermoscopy images of 68 confirmed BCCs with B-GOs were obtained. Another set of 131 contact dermoscopic images of benign lesions possessing B-GO mimics provided a …

Joint Frequency-Domain Multiuser Turbo Equalization With Successive Interference Cancellation For Doubly-Selective Fading Channels, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Feb 2013

Joint Frequency-Domain Multiuser Turbo Equalization With Successive Interference Cancellation For Doubly-Selective Fading Channels, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel multiuser separation and equalization scheme is proposed for single carrier wireless communication systems integrating frequency-domain (FD) multiuser turbo equalization (MUTE) and successive interference cancellation (SIC). The proposed iterative structure consists of multiple layers of detection, and at each layer the user with strongest power is processed by a frequency-domain multiuser equalizer to yield the soft extrinsic information on the coded bits of that user, which is delivered to a channel decoder after deinterleaving. The extrinsic information gleaned by the decoder is fed back to both the current and previous multiuser equalizers for the next iteration as a-priori information. …

Molecular Diversity Of Bacteroidales In Fecal And Environmental Samples And Swine-Associated Subpopulations, Regina Lamendella, Kent C. Li, Daniel B. Oerther, Jorge W. Santo Domingo

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Several swine-specific microbial source tracking methods are based on PCR assays targeting Bacteroidales 16S rRNA gene sequences. The limited application of these assays can be explained by the poor understanding of their molecular diversity in fecal sources and environmental waters. In order to address this, we studied the diversity of 9,340 partial (>600bp in length) Bacteroidales 16S rRNA gene sequences from 13 fecal sources and nine feces-contaminated watersheds. The compositions of major Bacteroidales populations were analyzed to determine which host and environmental sequences were contributing to each group. This information allowed us to identify populations which were both exclusive …

A Novel Fast Solver For Poisson's Equation With Neumann Boundary Condition, Zuhui Ma, Weng Cho Chew, Lijun Jiang Jan 2013

A Novel Fast Solver For Poisson's Equation With Neumann Boundary Condition, Zuhui Ma, Weng Cho Chew, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a novel fast method to solve Poisson's equation in an arbitrary two dimensional region with Neumann boundary condition, which are frequently encountered in solving electrostatic boundary problems. The basic idea is to solve the original Poisson's equation by a two-step procedure. In the first stage, we expand the electric field of interest by a set of tree basis functions and solve it with a fast tree solver in O(N) operations. The field such obtained, however, fails to expand the exact field because the tree basis is not curl-free. Despite of this, we can retrieve the …

The Fokker-Planck Equation For Power System Stability Probability Density Function Evolution, Keyou Wang, Mariesa L. Crow Jan 2013

The Fokker-Planck Equation For Power System Stability Probability Density Function Evolution, Keyou Wang, Mariesa L. Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an analysis of the evolution of the probability density function of the dynamic trajectories of a single machine infinite bus power system. The probability density function can be used to determine the impact of random (stochastic) load perturbations on system stability. The evolution of the state probability density function over time leads to several interesting observations regarding stability regions as a function of damping parameter. The Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) is used to describe the evolution of the probability density of the states. The FPE is solved numerically using PDE solvers (such as finite difference method). Based on …

Missouri S&T Undergraduate Experiential Learning Standard & Operating Procedure, Academic Freedom & Standards Committee Of Missouri S&T Faculty Senate

Academic Freedom & Standards

All undergraduate students graduating from Missouri S&T are required to have an experiential learning activity as part of their degree requirement. There is a long tradition of experiential learning. One of the early proponents was John Dewey, the Progressive era education reformer. Dewey argued that educators should move from teaching abstractions to instruction based upon problem solving and learning by doing. In other words, educators should encourage students to apply what they are learning. As he wrote in 1938, “There is an intimate and necessary relation between the process of actual experience and education.”

Effect Of Friction Stir Processing On The Tensile And Fatigue Behavior Of A Cast A206 Alloy, R. Kapoor, K. Kandasamy, R. S. Mishra, J. A. Baumann, G. Grant

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The microstructure of cast Al alloy A206 was modified using friction stir processing (FSP) to eliminate porosity, break down intermetallic particles and refine the grains. The inference from differential scanning calorimetry is that the nugget region of the as-FSP material contained primarily GP zones. Uniaxial tensile tests and bending fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature on A206 alloy in the cast and T4 conditions and after FSP with different heat treatments - as-FSP, FSP and aging, and FSP with solutionizing and aging. These produced varied microstructures with combinations of pores, grain sizes, precipitate types and particle sizes. The …

Projectile And Target Scaling Of The Total Ionization Cross Sections Of Atoms And Molecules, E. C. Montenegro, G. M. Sigaud, Robert D. Dubois Jan 2013

Projectile And Target Scaling Of The Total Ionization Cross Sections Of Atoms And Molecules, E. C. Montenegro, G. M. Sigaud, Robert D. Dubois

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A scaling for the total ionization cross sections of atomic and molecular targets by neutral to highly charged projectiles with energies ranging from a few keV/u to many MeV/u is presented, with few free parameters, all velocity independent, and whose values do not vary appreciably for the projectiles and atomic and molecular targets considered here. Another important feature of the proposed scaling is that it has been built considering the characteristics of the collision systems, taking into account the various physical processes that lead to target ionization and the velocity regions where each of them dominates, and performing a smooth …
