Accurate 3-D Capacitance Of Parallel Plates From 2-D Analytical Superposition, Richard E. Matick, Albert E. Ruehli Jan 2013

Accurate 3-D Capacitance Of Parallel Plates From 2-D Analytical Superposition, Richard E. Matick, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The two-conductor strip line is a classic transmission line structure which has been extensively studied and used in endless applications for decades. Unfortunately, the exact determination of the 3-D capacitance of this basic case is analytically intractable. It will be shown that accurate values of the total 3-D capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with thin plates of any length, width, and separation can be determined from the superposition of the exact 2-D capacitance obtained from an analytic solution using elliptic integrals in a very simple manner. The accuracy is determined for a range of cases through a comparison of …

Improved Target Impedance For Power Distribution Network Design With Power Traces Based On Rigorous Transient Analysis In A Handheld Device, Jingook Kim, Yuzo Takita, Kenji Araki, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concept of target impedance can be significantly improved, based on the rigorous closed-form expressions for transient supply voltage ripple excited by an integrated circuit (IC) switching current, for the power distribution network (PDN) with power traces that is commonly used in handheld devices. A systematic procedure for developing the target impedance is formulated, which is then applied to the PDN design of a handheld product. From measurements of transient IC switching currents, PDN impedance, and supply voltage ripple, it is shown that the proposed target impedance successfully correlates the PDN impedance in the frequency domain with the transient supply …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quasiclassical trajectories simulations are performed to study the influence of surface temperature on the dynamics of a N atom colliding a N-preadsorbed W(100) surface under normal incidence. A generalized Langevin surface oscillator scheme is used to allow energy transfer between the nitrogen atoms and the surface. The influence of the surface temperature on the N2 formed molecules via Eley-Rideal recombination is analyzed at T = 300, 800, and 1500 K. Ro-vibrational distributions of the N2 molecules are only slightly affected by the presence of the thermal bath whereas kinetic energy is rather strongly decreased when going from a …

Source Reconstruction Method-Based Radiated Emission Characterization For Pcbs, Ping Li, Li Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A technique based on a source reconstruction method (SRM) is employed to reproduce the same electromagnetic radiated emissions from printed circuit boards (PCB). This equivalent source is composed of both the electric and magnetic currents that are represented by a set of Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis functions. Planar magnetic near field is served as the input information for the SRM. The equivalent source is inversely acquired through the conjugate gradient algorithm that minimizes the norm of the residue. Magnetic field integral equation is utilized to find out the unknown coefficients of the currents. This method is directly extended to model the emissions …

A Comparative Study Of The Bond Strength Of Reinforcing Steel In High-Volume Fly Ash Concrete And Conventional Concrete, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Michael H. Wolfe, Jeffery S. Volz

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The production of Portland cement-the key ingredient in concrete-generates a significant amount of carbon dioxide. However, due to its incredible versatility, availability, and relatively low cost, concrete is the most consumed manmade material on the planet. One method of reducing concrete's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions is the use of fly ash to replace a significant amount of the cement. An experimental investigation was conducted to compare the bond strength of reinforcing steel in high-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC)-concrete with at least 50% of the cement replaced with fly ash-with conventional concrete (CC). This experimental program consisted of 12 pull-out …

Intermittency And Local Dissipation Scales Under Strong Mean Shear, Khandakar Niaz Morshed, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy, Lakshmi Prasad Dasi Jan 2013

Intermittency And Local Dissipation Scales Under Strong Mean Shear, Khandakar Niaz Morshed, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy, Lakshmi Prasad Dasi

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We experimentally probe the local dissipation scale distribution Q(η) and temporal fluctuations of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate ε in the strongly anisotropic flow past a backward facing step. A shift in Q(η) and corresponding reduction in the relative intermittency of ε is observed with increasing mean shear S. We offer physical arguments to elucidate the role of strong shear on the small-scale structure. A local mean-shear dissipation Reynolds number, ReS ≡ {ε}/(S2ν), is proposed that may define a family of universal small-scale structures of turbulence. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

Introduction. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have emerged as important regulators of inflammatory/immune responses in vitro and in vivo and represent attractive candidates for cell-based therapies for diseases that involve excessive inflammation. Acute lung injury (ALI) is an inflammatory condition for which treatment is mainly supportive due to lack of effective therapies. In this study, the therapeutic effects of ASC-based therapy were assessed in vivo by comparison of the anti-inflammatory properties of both human and murine ASCs in a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI.

Methods. Human ASCs (hASCs) or mouse ASCs (mASCs) were delivered to C57Bl/6 mice (7.5 x 10 …

Fertilization is followed by complex changes in cytoplasmic composition and extensive chromatin reprogramming which results in the abundant activation of totipotent embryonic genome at embryonic genome activation (EGA). While chromatin reprogramming has been widely studied in several species, only a handful of reports characterize changing transcriptome profiles and resulting metabolic changes in cleavage stage embryos. The aims of the current study were to investigate RNA profiles of in vivo developed (ivv) and in vitro produced (ivt) porcine embryos before (2-cell stage) and after (late 4-cell stage) EGA and determine major metabolic changes that regulate totipotency. The period before EGA was …

Recent advances in theory and applications of complex dynamical systems have contributed much to the successful handling of certain problems in biology, physics, economics, engineering, and so forth that until recently were thought too difficult to be analyzed. These complex systems may be characterized by systems with uncertainty, impulse, time delay, stochastic perturbation, hybrid dynamics, distributed dynamics, and chaotic dynamics. The overall aim of this special issue is to bring together the latest or innovative knowledge and advances in mathematics for handling complex systems, which may depend largely on methods from mathematical analysis, artificial intelligence, statistics, and engineering, including nonlinear …

A Bound On The Vertical Transport Of Heat In The 'Ultimate' State Of Slippery Convection At Large Prandtl Numbers, Xiaoming Wang, Jared P. Whitehead Jan 2013

A Bound On The Vertical Transport Of Heat In The 'Ultimate' State Of Slippery Convection At Large Prandtl Numbers, Xiaoming Wang, Jared P. Whitehead

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An upper bound on the rate of vertical heat transport is established in three dimensions for stress-free velocity boundary conditions on horizontally periodic plates. a variation of the background method is implemented that allows negative values of the quadratic form to yield 'small' (O.1=Pr/) corrections to the subsequent bound. for large (but finite) Prandtl numbers this bound is an improvement over the 'ultimate' Ra1=2 scaling and, in the limit of infinite Pr, agrees with the bound of Ra5=12 recently derived in that limit for stress-free boundaries. © 2013 Cambridge University Press.

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the well-posedness of the Hele-Shaw-Cahn-Hilliard system modeling binary fluid flow in porous media with arbitrary viscosity contrast but matched density between the components. for initial data in Hs, s>d2+1, the existence and uniqueness of solution in C([0,T];Hs) ∪L2(0,T;Hs+2) that is global in time in the two-dimensional case (d=2) and local in time in the three-dimensional case (d=3) are established. Several blow-up criterions in the three-dimensional case are provided as well. One of the tools that we utilized is the Littlewood-Paley theory in order to establish certain key commutator estimates. © 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS.

Optical Sensors Reflection-Based Phase-Shifted Long Period Fiber Grating For Simultaneous Measurement Of Temperature And Refractive Index, Jie Huang, Xinwei Lan, Amardeep Kaur, Hanzheng Wang, Lei Yuan, Hai Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report a reflection-based phase-shifted long period fiber grating (PS-LPFG) and demonstrate its capability for simultaneous measurement of temperature and external reflective index (RI). The sensor device comprises a grating directly written by CO2 laser and silver-coated end face. A π-shifted LPFG is presented with two attenuation bands through its reflection spectrum. These two bands have different sensitivity towards temperature and external RI that can be used for simultaneous measurement of the two variables. The experimental results show that this probe-type PS-LPFG performs well in terms of linearity and sensitivity.

The Beverton–Holt Q-Difference Equation, Martin Bohner, Rotchana Chieochan Jan 2013

The Beverton–Holt Q-Difference Equation, Martin Bohner, Rotchana Chieochan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Beverton–Holt model is a classical population model which has been considered in the literature for the discrete-time case. Its continuous-time analogue is the well-known logistic model. In this paper, we consider a quantum calculus analogue of the Beverton–Holt equation. We use a recently introduced concept of periodic functions in quantum calculus in order to study the existence of periodic solutions of the Beverton–Holt q-difference equation. Moreover, we present proofs of quantum calculus versions of two so-called Cushing–Henson conjectures. © 2013 The Author(s). Published by Taylor & Francis.

Normal anterior pituitary function is essential for fertility. Release from the gland of the reproductive hormones luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone is regulated primarily by hypothalamically-derived gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), although other releasing factors (RF) have been postulated to exist. Using a bioinformatic approach, we have identified a novel peptide, phoenixin, that regulates pituitary gonadotrophin secretion by modulating the expression of the GnRH receptor, an action with physiologically relevant consequences. Compromise of phoenixin in vivo using small interfering RNA resulted in the delayed appearance of oestrus and a reduction in GnRH receptor expression in the pituitary. Phoenixin may represent a new …

Method And System For Scatter Correction In X-Ray Imaging, X. Wu, J. Hsieh, P. Sainath, Xin Liu

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Approaches for deriving scatter information using inverse tracking of scattered X-rays is disclosed. In certain embodiments scattered rays are tracked from respective locations on a detector to a source of the X-ray radiation, as opposed to tracking schemes that proceed from the source to the detector. In one such approach, the inverse tracking is implemented using a density integrated volume that reduces the integration steps performed.

This paper presents a seismic design procedure for self-centering precast post-tensioned bridge piers. The piers presented in this manuscript consisted of concrete filled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes. A large set of 84 piers with different design parameters were analyzed using finite element models. The backbone curve of each pier was developed and bilinearized. The idealized backbone curves were used to develop a set of empirical equations that were able to reproduce the bilinearized backbone curve of a given pier. Different performance criteria have been proposed for the system according to the intensity and the frequency of occurrence of a …

Assessing Robustness In Systems Of Systems Meta-Architectures, Louis Pape, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

New Systems of Systems (SoSs) are frequently created through partial participation from independent, existing systems with their own continuing missions. These systems' contribution to the SoS may be contingent on changing priorities and conditions. Therefore, when devising a SoS architecture, consideration should be given to the SoS robustness to occasional lack of availability of individual systems. Robustness is generally the ability to deliver capability in unknown future conditions. Not knowing which systems will be present would seem to fit this definition for a SoS. A fuzzy approach to defining SoS performance in terms of capabilities provided by each type of …

Here, we present detailed experimental and theoretical studies on the CM in molecules probed by high harmonic generation using a range of near-infrared light pulses from λ = 1.3 to 1.8 µm. We demonstrate the CM to occur in CS₂ and CCl₄ at ~42 and ~40 eV, respectively, by comparing the high harmonic spectra with the known partial photoionization cross sections of different molecular orbitals, confirmed by theoretical calculations of harmonic spectra. Gas And Water Flow Through Nanoscale Porous Media, Songyuan Liu

Masters Theses

"This work provides a lab experiment to describe the fluid diffusion in nanoscale porous media. By using ideal ceramic membranes which have uniform pore size in nanoscale and homogeneous pore distribution instead of shale or tight sandstone which have various pore sizes and complicated pore distribution and structure, a better understanding of fluid flow through nanoscale porous media could be gained.

Core flooding test were conducted by injecting nitrogen and water separately to describe gas and liquid flow in nanoscale porous media. With all the other factors known or controlled, pressure and flow rate were measured to calculate permeability. By …

Robustness Of A Derivative-Free Adaptive Control Law In The Presence Of Unmodeled Dynamics, Tansel Yucelen, Anthony J. Calise

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although adaptive control theory offers mathematical tools to achieve required system performance without excessive dependence on modeling, its application to safety-critical systems can be limited by the presence of unmodeled dynamics. This paper examines the robustness to unmodeled dynamics of a recently developed derivative-free adaptive control law. In contrast to derivative-based adaptive laws it is shown, using a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, that robustness to unmodeled dynamics is improved by increasing the adaptation gain. This is accomplished by including a bias term in the set of basic functions employed by the adaptive control law. It is shown that derivative-based adaptive laws do …

This paper focuses on a new connectivity control architecture for networked multiagent systems based on hybrid protocols. Specifically, for a group of agents subject to Δ-disk proximity graphs, we consider the consensus problem while preserving connectedness with a priori given bounds on the control inputs. The bounds on the control inputs are shown not to depend on potential functions or system states. Instead, the bounds are user selected continuous functions. By using the proposed framework, we show that the maximum distance among neighboring agents decreases strictly, and hence the connectivity problem is solved while satisfying the consensus objective. © 2013 …

There are growing concerns about the increasing trends of emerging micropollutants in the environment due to their potential negative impacts on natural ecosystems and humans. This has attracted attention from both governmental and non-governmental organizations worldwide. Pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and endocrine disruptors are continuously being released consciously or unconsciously into water sources due to poor regulatory frameworks especially in the developing countries. The effects of these contaminants are poorly known. They are not easily biodegradable and have become an environmental nuisance and public health issue. This has heightened the risk of exposure to their deleterious effects in such countries …

We proved the existence of a universal flexoantiferrodistortive coupling as a necessary complement to the well-known flexoelectric coupling. The coupling is universal for all antiferrodistortive systems and can lead to the formation of incommensurate, spatially modulated phases in multiferroics. Our analysis can provide a self-consistent mesoscopic explanation for a broad range of modulated domain structures observed experimentally in multiferroics.

Neuropredictive Control And Trajectory Generation For Slung Load Systems, Gerardo De La Torre, Eric N. Johnson, Tansel Yucelen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a neuropredictive trajectory generation architecture for slung load systems. The presented architecture integrates the real-time trajectory generation method with a system uncertainty identifying neural network. It is shown that the effect of system uncertainty on a model predictive control approach can be mitigated by the use of neural networks. A numerical example of an uncertain slung load system is shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented framework.
