Fixed Final Time Optimal Adaptive Control Of Linear Discrete-Time Systems In Input-Output Form, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan Jul 2013

Fixed Final Time Optimal Adaptive Control Of Linear Discrete-Time Systems In Input-Output Form, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the fixed final time adaptive optimal regulation of discrete-time linear systems with unknown system dynamics is addressed. First, by transforming the linear systems into the input/output form, the adaptive optimal control design depends only on the measured outputs and past inputs instead of state measurements. Next, due to the time-varying nature of finite-horizon, a novel online adaptive estimator is proposed by utilizing an online approximator to relax the requirement on the system dynamics. An additional error term corresponding to the terminal constraint is defined and minimized overtime. No policy/value iteration is performed by the novel parameter update …

Fiber Pigtailed Thin Wall Capillary Coupler For Excitation Of Microsphere Wgm Resonator, Haining Wang, Xinwei Lan, Jie Huang, Lei Yuan, Cheol-Woon Kim, Hai Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber pigtailed thin wall capillary coupler for excitation of Whispering Gallery Modes (WGMs) of microsphere resonators. The coupler is made by fusion-splicing an optical fiber with a capillary tube and consequently etching the capillary wall to a thickness of a few microns. Light is coupled through the peripheral contact between inserted microsphere and the etched capillary wall. The coupling efficiency as a function of the wall thickness was studied experimentally. WGM resonance with a Q-factor of 1.14 x 104 was observed using a borosilicate glass microsphere with a diameter of 71 µm. The …

Microwave Assisted Reconstruction Of Optical Interferograms For Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing, Jie Huang, Lei Hua, Xinwei Lan, Tao Wei, Hai Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports a distributed fiber optic sensing technique through microwave assisted separation and reconstruction of optical interferograms in spectrum domain. The approach involves sending a microwave-modulated optical signal through cascaded fiber optic interferometers. The microwave signal was used to resolve the position and reflectivity of each sensor along the optical fiber. By sweeping the optical wavelength and detecting the modulation signal, the optical spectrum of each sensor can be reconstructed. Three cascaded fiber optic extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensors were used to prove the concept. Their microwave-reconstructed interferogram matched well with those recorded individually using an optical spectrum analyzer. The …

Plastic Response Of Dislocation Glide In Solid Helium Under Dc Strain-Rate Loading, Caizhi Zhou, Jungjung Su, Matthias J. Graf, Charles J. Olson Reichhardt, Alexander V. Balatsky, Irene J. Beyerlein

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We develop a model for the gliding of dislocations and plasticity in solid 4He. This model takes into account the Peierls barrier, multiplication and interaction of dislocations, as well as classical thermally and mechanically activated processes leading to dislocation glide. We specifically examine the dc stress-strain curve and how it is affected by temperature, strain rate, and dislocation density. As a function of temperature and shear strain, we observe plastic deformation and discuss how this may be related to the experimental observation of elastic anomalies in solid hcp 4He that have been discussed in connection with the possibility …

Decoupling The Stationary Navier-Stokes-Darcy System With The Beavers-Joseph-Saffman Interface Condition, Yong Cao, Yuchuan Chu, Xiaoming He, Mingzhen Wei

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a domain decomposition method for the coupled stationary Navier-Stokes and Darcy equations with the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition in order to improve the efficiency of the finite element method. The physical interface conditions are directly utilized to construct the boundary conditions on the interface and then decouple the Navier-Stokes and Darcy equations. Newton iteration will be used to deal with the nonlinear systems. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the features of the proposed method.

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) can traverse cellular membranes and deliver biologically active molecules into cells. In this study, we demonstrate that CPPs comprised of nona-arginine (R9) and a penetration accelerating peptide sequence (Pas) that facilitates escape from endocytic lysosomes, denoted as PR9, greatly enhance the delivery of noncovalently associated quantum dots (QDs) into human A549 cells. Mechanistic studies, intracellular trafficking analysis and a functional gene assay reveal that endocytosis is the main route for intracellular delivery of PR9/QD complexes. Endocytic trafficking of PR9/QD complexes was monitored using both confocal and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Zeta-potential and size analyses indicate the importance …

Triple differential cross section measurements for the electron-impact ionization of the highest occupied molecular orbitals of tetrahydropyran and 1,4-dioxane are presented. For each molecule, experimental measurements were performed using the (e,2e) technique in asymmetric coplanar kinematics with an incident electron energy of 250 eV and an ejected electron energy of 20 eV. With the scattered electrons being detected at -5°, the angular distributions of the ejected electrons in the binary and recoil regions were observed. These measurements are compared with calculations performed within the molecular 3-body distorted wave model. Here, reasonable agreement was observed between the theoretical model and the …

Quantitative Rescattering Theory Of High-Order Harmonic Generation For Polyatomic Molecules, Anh-Thu Le, R. R. Lucchese, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report applications of the quantitative rescattering theory (QRS) for calculation of high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) from polyatomic molecules in ultrashort linearly polarized intense laser pulses, using the example of the CCl₄ molecule. In particular, we present a detailed analysis and a treatment for the phase of the electron returning wave packet, which recollides with the parent molecular ion to emit high-energy photons. Our results show that Cooper-type minimum structures in the molecular photoionization cross section lead to quite distinguishable minima in the HHG spectra, even for unaligned polyatomic molecules.

Incentive Compatible Privacy-Preserving Data Analysis, Murat Kantarcioglu, Wei Jiang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In many cases, competing parties who have private data may collaboratively conduct privacy-preserving distributed data analysis (PPDA) tasks to learn beneficial data models or analysis results. Most often, the competing parties have different incentives. Although certain PPDA techniques guarantee that nothing other than the final analysis result is revealed, it is impossible to verify whether participating parties are truthful about their private input data. Unless proper incentives are set, current PPDA techniques cannot prevent participating parties from modifying their private inputs. This raises the question of how to design incentive compatible privacy-preserving data analysis techniques that motivate participating parties to …

On Compressing Data In Wireless Sensor Networks For Energy Efficiency And Real Time Delivery, Tommy Szalapski, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wireless sensor networks possess significant limitations in storage, bandwidth, processing, and energy. Additionally, real-time sensor network applications such as monitoring poisonous gas leaks cannot tolerate high latency. While some good data compression algorithms exist specific to sensor networks, in this paper we present TinyPack, a suite of energy-efficient methods with high-compression ratios that reduce latency, storage, and bandwidth usage further in comparison with some other recently proposed algorithms. Our Huffman style compression schemes exploit temporal locality and delta compression to provide better bandwidth utilization important in the wireless sensor network, thus reducing latency for real time sensor-based monitoring applications. Our …

The structural role of Gallium (Ga) is investigated when substituted for Zinc (Zn) in a 0.42SiO2-0.40-xZnO-0.10Na2O-0.08CaO glass series, (where x = 0.08). Each starting material was amorphous, and the network connectivity (NC) was calculated assuming Ga acts as both a network modifier (1.23), and also as a network former. Assuming a network forming role for Ga the NC increased with increasing Ga concentration throughout the glass series (Control 1.23, TGa-1 2.32 and TGa-2 3.00). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed both composition and correlated NC predictions. Raman spectroscopy was employed to investigate Q-structure and found that a shift …

An Efficient And Probabilistic Secure Bit-Decomposition, Bharath K.K. Samanthula, Hu Chun, Wei Jiang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many secure data analysis tasks, such as secure clustering and classification, require efficient mechanisms to convert the intermediate encrypted integers into the corresponding encryptions of bits. The existing bit-decomposition algorithms either do not offer sufficient security or are computationally inefficient. In order to provide better security as well as to improve efficiency, we propose a novel probabilistic-based secure bit-decomposition protocol for values encrypted using public key additive homomorphic encryption schemes. The proposed protocol guarantees security as per the semi-honest security definition of secure multi-party computation (MPC) and is also very efficient compared to the existing method. Our protocol always returns …

Long-Term Low Do Enriches And Shifts Nitrifier Community In Activated Sludge, Guoqiang Liu, Jianmin Wang May 2013

Long-Term Low Do Enriches And Shifts Nitrifier Community In Activated Sludge, Guoqiang Liu, Jianmin Wang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the activated sludge process, reducing the operational dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration can improve oxygen transfer efficiency, thereby reducing energy use. The low DO, however, may result in incomplete nitrification. This research investigated the long-term effect of low DO on the nitrification performance of activated sludge. Results indicated that, for reactors with 10- and 40-day solids retention times (SRTs), complete nitrification was accomplished after a long-term operation with a DO of 0.37 and 0.16 mg/L, respectively. Under long-term low DO conditions, nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) became a better oxygen competitor than ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and, as a result, no …

Targeting Udp-Galactopyranose Mutases From Eukaryotic Human Pathogens, Karina Kizjakina, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

UDP-Galactopyranose mutase (UGM) is a unique flavin-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of UDPgalactopyranose (UDP-Galp) to UDP-galactofuranose (UDP-Galf). The product of this reaction is the precursor to Galf, a major component of the cell wall and of cell surface glycoproteins and glycolipids in many eukaryotic and prokaryotic human pathogens. The function of UGM is important in the virulence of fungi, parasites, and bacteria. Its role in virulence and its absence in humans suggest that UGM is an ideal drug target. Significant structural and mechanistic information has been accumulated on the prokaryotic UGMs; however, in the past few years the research …

Hs3dpg: Hierarchical Simulation For 3d P/G Network, Shuai Tao, Xiaoming Chen, Yu Wang, Yuchun Ma, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As different chips are stacked together in 3D ICs, the power/ground (P/G) network simulation becomes more challenging than that of 2D cases. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical simulation method suitable for 3D P/G network (HS3DPG), which can ensure full parallelism and good scalability with the number of tiers. In the IR drop analysis, when there are 9 tiers, the hierarchical method can be 6.5 times faster than the direct full network simulation. The accuracy of HS3DPG has been verified by a 3D P/G network from the industrial design. Besides, we introduce the 'locality' property into HS3DPG to further …

Increasing Round Trip Efficiency Of Hybrid Li-Air Battery With Bifunctional Catalysts, Kan Huang, Yunfeng Li, Yangchuan Xing

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Previously it was shown that Pt as cathode catalyst has a large overpotential during charge in rechargeable hybrid Li-air battery with sulfuric acid catholyte. This article demonstrates that a bifunctional catalyst composed of Pt and IrO2 supported on carbon nanotubes can address this problem. The specially designed and synthesized bifunctional catalyst showed significant overpotential reduction and achieved a round-trip energy efficiency of 81% after 10 cycles, higher than many achieved in aprotic Li-O2 batteries. The hybrid Li-air battery was discharged and recharged for 20 cycles at 0.2 mA/cm2, showing a fairly stable cell performance. A specific capacity of 306 mAh/g …
