Search-Based Refactoring Using Recorded Code Changes, Ali Ouni, Marouane Kessentini, Houari Sahraoui May 2013

Search-Based Refactoring Using Recorded Code Changes, Ali Ouni, Marouane Kessentini, Houari Sahraoui

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the past decades, many techniques and tools have been developed to record the sequence of applied refactoring to improve design quality. We start from the observation that these recorded code changes can be used to propose new refactoring solutions in similar contexts. In addition, this knowledge can be combined with structural and semantic information, used by existing work, to improve the automation of refactoring. In this paper, we propose a multi-objective optimization approach to find the best sequence of refactoring's that maximizes the use of refactoring applied in the past to similar contexts, minimizes semantic errors and minimizes the …

An Approach For Optimization Of Object Queries On Collections Using Annotations, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay K. Madria, Thomas Weigert May 2013

An Approach For Optimization Of Object Queries On Collections Using Annotations, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay K. Madria, Thomas Weigert

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Object oriented programming languages have raised the level of abstraction by supporting the object querying on collections. Programming languages can execute first class query constructs, using query optimization techniques from the database field, for run time optimizations. Existing approaches, however, such as Java Query Language (JQL), which executes such query constructs on collections have high run time overhead. Therefore, we propose an approach to reduce the burden of run time overhead by performing most of the query optimization for object queries on collections at compile time. This approach both analyzes the source code and obtains the metadata provided through annotations. …

Localization Of Rfid Tags Using Stochastic Tunneling, M. R. Basheer, S. Jagannathan May 2013

Localization Of Rfid Tags Using Stochastic Tunneling, M. R. Basheer, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel localization scheme in the 3D wireless domain that employs cross correlation in backscattered signal power from a cluster of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to estimate their location. Spatially co-located RFID tags, energized by a common tag reader, exhibit correlation in their received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values. Hence, for a cluster of RFID tags, the posterior distribution of their unknown radial separation is derived as a function of the measured RSSI correlations between them. The global maxima of this posterior distribution represent the actual radial separation between the RFID tags. The radial separations are …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves at the boundaries of periodic composites (electromagnetic/optical metamaterials) depends in general on both bulk and surface waves. We investigate the interplay of these two contributions using three-dimensional full-wave numerical simulations and a recently developed non-asymptotic homoge-nization theory. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Surface modification, particularly coatings deposition, is beneficial to tissue-engineering applications. In this work, bioactive glass/zirconium titanate composite thin films were prepared by a sol-gel spin-coating method. The surface features of the coatings were studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and spectroscopic reflection analyses. The results show that uniform and sound multilayer thin films were successfully prepared through the optimization of the process variables and the application of carboxymethyl cellulose as a dispersing agent. Also, it was found that the thickness and roughness of the multilayer coatings increase nonlinearly with increasing the number of the layers. This new class …

Approximate String Matching By Position Restricted Alignment, Manish Patil, Xuanting Cai, Sharma V. Thankachan, Rahul Shah, Seung Jong Park, David Foltz May 2013

Approximate String Matching By Position Restricted Alignment, Manish Patil, Xuanting Cai, Sharma V. Thankachan, Rahul Shah, Seung Jong Park, David Foltz

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Given a collection of strings, goal of the approximate string matching is to efficiently find the strings in the collection that are similar to a query string. In this paper, we focus on edit distance as measure to quantify the similarity between two strings. Existing q-gram based methods to address this problem use inverted indexes to index the q-grams of given string collection. These methods begin by generating the q-grams of query string (disjoint or overlapping) and then merge the inverted lists of these q-grams. Several filtering techniques have been proposed so as to segment inverted lists to relatively shorter …

Intracellular Delivery Of Nanoparticles And Dnas By Ir9 Cell-Penetrating Peptides, Betty Revon Liu, Ji-Sing Liou, Yue-Wern Huang, Robert Aronstam, Han-Jung Lee

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) comprised of basic amino residues are able to cross cytoplasmic membranes and are able to deliver biologically active molecules inside cells. However, CPP/cargo entrapment in endosome limits biomedical utility as cargoes are destroyed in the acidic environment. In this study, we demonstrate protein transduction of a novel CPP comprised of an INF7 fusion peptide and nona-arginine (designated IR9). IR9 noncovalently interacts with quantum dots (QDs) and DNAs to form stable IR9/QD and IR9/DNA complexes which are capable of entering human A549 cells. Zeta-potentials were a better predictor of transduction efficiency than gel shift analysis, emphasizing the importance …

Experimental and theoretical triple differential cross sections (TDCS) from ammonia are presented in the low energy regime with outgoing electron energies from 20 eV down to 1.5 eV. Ionization measurements from the 3a1, 1e1, and 2a1 molecular orbitals were taken in a coplanar geometry. Data from the 3a1 and 1e1 orbitals were also obtained in a perpendicular plane geometry. The data are compared to predictions from the distorted wave Born approximation and molecular-three-body distorted wave models. The cross sections for the 3a1 and 1e1 orbitals that have p-like character were found …

Interplay Between Localization And Absorption In Disordered Waveguides, Alexey Yamilov, Ben Payne May 2013

Interplay Between Localization And Absorption In Disordered Waveguides, Alexey Yamilov, Ben Payne

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents results of ab-initio simulations of continuous wave transport in disordered absorbing waveguides. Wave interference effects cause deviations from diffusive picture of wave transport and make the diffusion coefficient position- and absorption-dependent. As a consequence, the true limit of a zero diffusion coefficient is never reached in an absorbing random medium of infinite size, instead, the diffusion coefficient saturates at some finite constant value. Transition to this absorption-limited diffusion exhibits a universality which can be captured within the framework of the self-consistent theory (SCT) of localization. The results of this work (i) justify use of SCT in analyses …

Spatiotemporal Smoothing As A Basis For Facial Tissue Tracking In Thermal Imaging, Yan Zhou, Panagiotis Tsiamyrtzis, Peggy Lindner, Ilya Timofeyev, Ioannis Pavlidis

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Accurate tracking of facial tissue in thermal infrared imaging is challenging because it is affected not only by positional but also physiological (functional) changes. This paper presents a particle filter tracker driven by a probabilistic template function with both spatial and temporal smoothing components, which is capable of adapting to abrupt positional and physiological changes. The method was tested on tracking facial regions of subjects under varying physiological and environmental conditions in 25 thermal clips. It demonstrated robustness and accuracy, outperforming other strategies. This new method promises improved performance in a number of biomedical applications that involve physiological measurements on …

Taxing The Opposition: Cactus League Attendance And The Efficiency Of The 'Cubs Tax', Michael C. Davis, Craig Palsson, Joseph Price

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In 2010, a plan to finance a new spring training stadium for the Cubs through a ticket surcharge on all games in the Cactus League was proposed. We find that the Cubs increase attendance when they are the away team by about 37%. Thus, the surcharge would be economically justified as long as the price elasticity of tickets is less than 0.32, which many prior studies find to be the case. This tax provides one of the few examples in which the cost of a subsidized stadium would be born primarily by the group that benefits the most from the …

A Numerically Efficient Formulation For Time-Domain Electromagnetic- Semiconductor Cosimulation For Fast-Transient Systems, Quan Chen, Wim Schoenmaker, Guanhua Chen, Lijun Jiang, Ngai Wong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report recent progress in developing a numerically efficient formulation for electromagnetic-technology computer-aided design cosimulation for fast-transient computations. The difficulties underlying the currently existing transient formulation stemming from the vector potential-scalar potential (A-V) framework are analyzed. A time-domain electric field-scalar potential (E-V) framework is then developed via equation and variable transformations. This results in better-conditioned systems that are friendly to iterative solutions at fast switching times. Numerical examples show that the proposed E-V solver renders a useful tool for addressing multidomain simulation. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Synthesis And Fading Of Eighteenth-Century Prussian Blue Pigments: A Combined Study By Spectroscopic And Diffractive Techniques Using Laboratory And Synchrotron Radiation Sources, Louise Samain, Fernande Grandjean, Gary J. Long, Pauline Martinetto, Pierre Bordet, Jana Sanyova, David Strivay

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Prussian blue, a hydrated iron(III) hexacyanoferrate(II) complex, is a synthetic pigment discovered in Berlin in 1704. Because of both its highly intense color and its low cost, Prussian blue was widely used as a pigment in paintings until the 1970s. The early preparative methods were rapidly recognized as a contributory factor in the fading of the pigment, a fading already known by the mid-eighteenth century. Herein two typical eighteenth-century empirical recipes have been reproduced and the resulting pigment analyzed to better understand the reasons for this fading. X-ray absorption and Mössbauer spectroscopy indicated that the early syntheses lead to Prussian …

Key Points A significant potential source of error exists in mosaicked radar-rainfall maps. Different radar calibration offsets lead to misestimation of rainfall amounts. Systematic error in rainfall significantly affects hydrologic predictions. This study addresses a significant potential source of error that exists in radar-rainfall maps that are combined using data from multiple WSR-88D radars of the Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) national network in the United States. This error stems from different radar calibration offsets that create a border within discontinuous rainfall fields at the equidistance zone among radars. The discontinuity in rainfall fields could lead to misestimation of rainfall over …

Impedance Analysis Of Dielectric Nanoparticles Enabled Via A Self-Assembled Monolayer, Sasidhar Siddabattuni, Thomas P. Schuman, Vladimir Petrovsky, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Impedance spectroscopy has been shown to be a powerful tool to investigate the dielectric characteristics of powders suspended in suitable liquids. The electrical and dielectrical contributions of different components of the slurry can be extracted from the impedance spectra through measurement of frequency-dependent relaxations. However, for ferroelectric powders that possess innate surface conductivity, such as BaTiO3, nanoparticles have sufficient conductivity to exclude low frequency fields that preclude impedance characterization of the particle core. In this work, the slurry technique is shown to be effective for dielectric characterization of not only micrometer-sized particles through equivalent circuit modeling but also …

Analysis Of Damage In Laminated Architectural Glazing Subjected To Wind Loading And Windborne Debris Impact, Mahesh S. Shetty, Jun Wei, Lokeswarappa R. Dharani, Daniel S. Stutts

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wind loading and windborne debris (missile) impact are the two primary mechanisms that result in window glazing damage during hurricanes. Wind-borne debris is categorized into two types: small hard missiles such as roof gravel, and large soft missiles representing lumber from wood-framed buildings. Laminated architectural glazing (LAG) may be used in buildings where impact resistance is needed. The glass plies in LAG undergo internal damage before total failure. The bulk of the published work on this topic either deals with the stress and dynamic analyses of undamaged LAG or the total failure of LAG. The pre-failure damage response of LAG …

Lessons From The Seismic Performance Of Pile-Supported Bridges Affected By Liquefaction During The M8.8 2010 Maule Chile Earthquake, Christian Ledezma

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Ground failure case studies have been the source of the most important advances in geotechnical earthquake engineering over the past 50 years. Documented case histories from the 2010 M8.8 Maule Chile earthquake will, if carefully studied, further advance this field. The 2010 M8.8 earthquake in Chile showed that liquefaction-induced soil-foundation-structure interaction problems are still far from being completely understood. The observed damage and partial collapse of pile-supported bridges like Juan Pablo II, Llacolén, Tubul, La Mochita, and Raqui, is most likely due to the effects of liquefaction-induced lateral and vertical ground displacement, which often causes large ground deformations that impose …
