With the rapid proliferation of wireless sensor networks, different network topologies are likely to exist in the same geographical region, each of which is able to perform its own functions individually. However, these networks are prone to cause interference to neighbor networks, such as data duplication or interception. How to detect, determine, and locate the unknown wireless topologies in a given geographical area has become a significant issue in the wireless industry. This problem is especially acute in military use, such as spy-nodes detection and communication orientation systems. In this paper, three different clustering methods are applied to classify the …

Among the Millennium Development Goals, MDG 5 Maternal Health has as its dual objectives: (a) reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio; and (b) achieve universal access to reproductive health. Existing maternal health survey instruments were evaluated, modified, adapted, and used to assess perceptions and practices by mothers in villages located in the state of Gujarat in western India as well as women residing in urban Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Women who had recently given birth were asked a series of questions regarding maternal attitudes and behaviors before, during, and shortly after pregnancy including basic health data (i.e., height and …

There are numerous approaches to measuring multidimensional poverty; these include the Human Development Index and the Multidimensional Poverty Index among others [1]. However, a gap in the literature is found when intervention assessment tools are investigated. The idea of creating a standardized assessment tool would allow for a deeper understanding of poverty on a per community basis. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) offers a robust platform in which to establish such a tool. An overview of SEM and several other general approaches to data aggregation are addressed. The notion of a standardized intervention assessment tool is discussed; this is focused on …

The effect of stitch density (SD) on fatigue life, stiffness degradation and fatigue damage mechanisms in carbon/epoxy (T800SC/XNRH6813) stitched using Vectran thread is presented in this paper. Moderately stitched composite (SD = 0.028/mm2; 'stitched 6 x 6') and densely stitched composite (SD = 0.111/mm2; 'stitched 3 x 3') are tested and compared with composite without stitch thread (SD = 0.0; 'unstitched'). The experiments show that the fatigue life of stitched 3 x 3 is moderately better than that of unstitched and stitched 6 x 6. Stitched 3 x 3 pattern is also able to postpone the …

This paper introduces two new frequency domain overdetermined blind source separation (BSS) algorithms: Inter-frequency Correlation with Microphone Diversity (ICMD), and ICA with Triggered Principal component analysis (ITP). In the first, we consider different sets of microphones, where in each set the number of microphones and sources are equal. In the second, we extract principal components from an overdetermined mixture to form a determined mixture for separation. Both techniques utilize inter-frequency correlation to align permutations via energy profiles. Both monitor the condition number of an inter-frequency cross-correlation matrix of the normalized de-mixed signals' envelopes to determine if separation has failed for …

High-order harmonics extending to the X-ray region generated in a gas medium by intense lasers offer the potential for providing tabletop broadband light sources but so far are limited by their low conversion efficiency. Here we show that harmonics can be enhanced by one to two orders of magnitude without an increase in the total laser power if the laser's waveform is optimized by synthesizing two- or three-colour fields. The harmonics thus generated are also favourably phase-matched so that radiation is efficiently built up in the gas medium. Our results, combined with the emerging intense high-repetition MHz lasers, promise to …

Fault Coupling And Potential For Earthquakes On The Creeping Section Of The Central San Andreas Fault, Jeremy Maurer, Kaj Johnson
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The 150 km long central section of the San Andreas Fault (CSAF) in central California creeps at the surface and has not produced a large earthquake historically. However, sections of the San Andreas Fault to the north and south are known to have ruptured repeatedly in M~7-8 earthquakes. It is currently unclear whether the creeping CSAF could rupture in large earthquakes, either individually or along with earthquakes on the locked sections to the north and south. We invert Global Positioning System and interferometric synthetic aperture radar data with elastic block models to estimate the degree of locking on the CSAF …

An apparatus and method for holding a membrane, screen or other flexible planar body in tension, while providing a conduit for water or other liquid to flow to the membrane being held. The membrane extends from inside a manifold body that carries the liquid, and the manifold body supports the membrane at one edge while the membrane is pulled in tension. Liquid pressure builds up inside the manifold body, preferably by entering a pressure chamber at the top of the manifold body. At a feeding pressure in the pressure chamber the liquid is distributed to the membrane for microbe growth. …

A seven-amino acid peptide (PEP7) is encoded within a short open reading frame within exon 2 (E2) in the 5′-leader sequence (5′LS) upstream of the rat ANG 1a-receptor (rAT1aR) mRNA. A chemically synthesized PEP7 markedly inhibited ANG II-induced Erk1/2 activation in cell culture by 62% compared with a scrambled PEP7 (sPEP7) [pErk1/2/Erk1/2 (AU): ANG II, 1.000 ± 0.0, ANG II+PEP7, 0.3812 ± 0.086, ANG II+sPEP7, 1.069 ± 0.18; n = 3]. Under these same conditions, PEP7 had no effect on ANG II-stimulated inositol-trisphosphate production. PEP7 also had no effect on epidermal growth factor- and phorbol methyl ester-induced Erk1/2 activation, suggesting …

The Properties And Structure Of Zinc Magnesium Phosphate Glasses, Charmayne E. Smith (Lonergan), Richard K. Brow
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Zn-Mg-phosphate (ZMP) glasses, including those with the nominal molar compositions (50 - x)ZnO xMgO 50P2O5 (0 ≥ x ≥ 50) and (60 - y)ZnO yMgO 40P2O5(0 ≥ y ≥ 60), were prepared and properties such as density, refractive index, coefficient of thermal expansion and glass transition temperature (Tg), were measured. The glass transition temperature increases by 100-150 C and the room temperature dissolution rates in water decrease by 1-2 orders of magnitude when MgO replaces ZnO while maintaining a constant P2O5 content. Glass structures were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and …

The derivations of existing error bounds for reduced order models of time varying partialdi erential equations (PDEs) constructed using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) haverelied on bounding the error between the POD data and various POD projections of that data.Furthermore, the asymptotic behavior of the model reduction error bounds depends on theasymptotic behavior of the POD data approximation error bounds. We consider time varyingdata taking values in two di erent Hilbert spacesHandV, withVH, and prove exactexpressions for the POD data approximation errors considering four di erent POD projectionsand the two di erent Hilbert space error norms. Furthermore, the exact error expressions …

The New York Sound: Citybilly Recording Artists And The Creation Of Hillbilly Music, 1924-1932, Patrick Huber
History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Since at least the 1960s, scholars have viewed hillbilly music as essentially a commercialized form of the traditional rural white folk music of the American South. In reconsidering what has come to be known as the "southern thesis," this article chronicles the significant but often overlooked contributions made by professional New York City studio singers and musicians to the nascent hillbilly recording industry between 1924 and 1932, particularly the principal role they played in the creation of what I call the "New York Sound." These urban artists' participation in this segment of the recording industry suggests that hillbilly music can …

In-plane behavior of unbonded posttensioned clay brick masonry walls are investigated using detailed finite-element (FE) models. FE models of three walls having different aspect ratios of 1.50, 1.00, and 0.67 are developed. Effects of tendon spacing on in-plane behavior of these walls are investigated using different tendon spacings ranging from 0.61 m (2 ft) to 3.81 m (12.5 ft). In addition, the effects of having different horizontal reinforcement ratios of 0%, 0.1%, and 0.5% on the in-plane behavior of the walls were investigated. The stresses in the tendons are calculated using different approaches, and then the flexural strength of each …

We present the results of searches for gravitational waves from a large selection of pulsars using data from the most recent science runs (S6, VSR2 and VSR4) of the initial generation of interferometric gravitational wave detectors LIGO (Laser Interferometric Gravitational-wave Observatory) and Virgo. We do not see evidence for gravitational wave emission from any of the targeted sources but produce upper limits on the emission amplitude. We highlight the results from seven young pulsars with large spin-down luminosities. We reach within a factor of five of the canonical spin-down limit for all seven of these, whilst for the Crab and …

We present improved methodology for including covariance matrices in the error budget of Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) galaxy clustering measurements, revisiting Data Release 9 (DR9) analyses, and describing a method that is used in DR10/11 analyses presented in companion papers. The precise analysis method adopted is becoming increasingly important, due to the precision that BOSS can now reach: even using as many as 600 mock catalogues to estimate covariance of two-point clustering measurements can still lead to an increase in the errors of ~20 per cent, depending on how the cosmological parameters of interest are measured. In this paper, …

The anisotropic galaxy clustering on large scales provides us with a unique opportunity to probe into the gravity theory through the redshift-space distortions (RSDs) and theAlcock-Paczynski effect. Using the multipole power spectra up to hexadecapole (ℓ = 4), of the luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample in the Data Release 7 (DR7) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey II (SDSS-II), we obtain simultaneous constraints on the linear growth rate f, angular diameter distance DA, and Hubble parameter H at redshift z = 0.3. For this purpose, we first extensively examine the validity of a theoretical model for the non-linear …

For most continental areas, the mechanisms leading to mantle fabrics responsible for the observed anisotropy remain ambiguous, partially due to the lack of sufficient spatial coverage of reliable seismological observations. Here we report the first joint analysis of shear-wave splitting measurements obtained at stations on the Arabian and Nubian Plates adjacent to the Red Sea. More than 1100 pairs of high-quality splitting parameters show dominantly N-S fast orientations at all 47 stations and larger-than-normal splitting times beneath the Afro-Arabian Dome (AAD). The uniformly N-S fast orientations and large splitting times up to 1.5 s are inconsistent with significant contributions from …

Adaptor protein Grb2 binds phosphotyrosines in the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) and thereby links receptor activation to intracellular signaling cascades. Here, we investigated how recruitment of Grb2 to EGFR is affected by the spatial organization and quaternary state of activated EGFR. We used the techniques of image correlation spectroscopy (ICS) and lifetime-detected Förster resonance energy transfer (also known as FLIM-based FRET or FLIM-FRET) to measure ligand-induced receptor clustering and Grb2 binding to activated EGFR in BaF/3 cells. BaF/3 cells were stably transfected with fluorescently labeled forms of Grb2 (Grb2-mRFP) and EGFR (EGFR-eGFP). Following stimulation of the cells with …

We analyse the anisotropic clustering of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS Data Release 11 (DR11) sample, which consists of 690 827 galaxies in the redshift range 0.43 < z < 0.7 and has a sky coverage of 8498 deg2. We perform our analysis in Fourier space using a power spectrum estimator suggested by Yamamoto et al. We measure the multipole power spectra in a self-consistent manner for the first time in the sense that we provide a proper way to treat the survey window function and the integral constraint, without the commonly used assumption of an isotropic power spectrum and without the need to split the survey into …

Cosmic strings can give rise to a large variety of interesting astrophysical phenomena. Among them, powerful bursts of gravitational waves (GWs) produced by cusps are a promising observational signature. In this Letter we present a search for GWs from cosmic string cusps in data collected by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors between 2005 and 2010, with over 625 days of live time. We find no evidence of GW signals from cosmic strings. From this result, we derive new constraints on cosmic string parameters, which complement and improve existing limits from previous searches for a stochastic background of GWs …

The currently accepted model for quantum interference resulting from the emission of electron waves from two scattering centers induced by either light or charged particle impact is analogous to Young's emission of two light waves from two slits. In this work we show that this simple classical wave model is incomplete and that there is a more complicated quantum interference pattern for low energy ionization caused by electron impact.
