Peritidal Carbonate Cycles Induced By Carbonate Productivity Variations: A Conceptual Model For An Isolated Early Triassic Greenhouse Platform In South China, Wan Yang, Daniel J. Lehrmann

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Eustasy has commonly been invoked to explain peritidal carbonate cyclicity, but is difficult to explain cycles formed in a greenhouse climate when eustasy is minimal. We propose that peritidal cycles on an Early Triassic isolated carbonate platform in Guizhou, South China, were formed by hierarchical carbonate productivity variations. Most of the 149 shallowing-upward cycles are typically terminated by flooding over intertidal facies and contain rare supratidal facies and no prolonged subaerial exposure. Low-diversity benthos in the platform interior during the post-end-Permian biotic recovery were sensitive to environmental perturbations, which caused variations in benthic sediment productivity in the subtidal carbonate factory. …

Through-Silicon-Via Inductor: Is It Real Or Just A Fantasy?, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Through-silicon-vias (TSVs) can potentially be used to implement inductors in three-dimensional (3D) integrated systems for minimal footprint and large inductance. However, different from conventional 2D spiral inductors, TSV inductors are fully buried in the lossy substrate, thus suffering from low quality factor. In this paper, we propose a novel shield mechanism utilizing the micro-channel, a technique conventionally used for heat removal, to reduce the substrate loss. This technique increases the quality factor and the inductance of the TSV inductor by up to 21x and 17x respectively. It enables us to implement TSV inductors of up to 38x smaller area and …

A Unifying Framework For Parameterizing Stably Stratified Shear-Flow Turbulence, Benjamin D. Mater, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy Mar 2014

A Unifying Framework For Parameterizing Stably Stratified Shear-Flow Turbulence, Benjamin D. Mater, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An alternative framework for parameterizing stably stratified shear-flow turbulence is presented. Using dimensional analysis, four non-dimensional parameters of interest are identified that consider the independent effects of stratification, shear, viscosity, and scalar diffusivity. In the interest of geophysical applications, the problem is further simplified by considering only high Reynolds number flow. This leads to a two-dimensional parameter space based on a buoyancy strength parameter (i.e., an inverse Froude number) and a shear strength parameter. Consideration for the gradient Richardson number allows the space to be divided into an unforced regime, a shear dominated regime, and a buoyancy-dominated regime. On this …

Epigenetic Modification, Dehydration, And Molecular Crowding Effects On The Thermodynamics Of I-Motif Structure Formation From C-Rich Dna, Yogini P. Bhavsar-Jog, Eric Van Dornshuld, Tracy A. Brooks, Gregory S. Tschumper, Randy M. Wadkins

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

DNA sequences with the potential to form secondary structures such as i-motifs (iMs) and G-quadruplexes (G4s) are abundant in the promoters of several oncogenes and, in some instances, are known to regulate gene expression. Recently, iM-forming DNA strands have also been employed as functional units in nanodevices, ranging from drug delivery systems to nanocircuitry. To understand both the mechanism of gene regulation by iMs and how to use them more efficiently in nanotechnological applications, it is essential to have a thorough knowledge of factors that govern their conformational states and stabilities. Most of the prior work to characterize the conformational …

Characterization Of The Potential Energy Surfaces Of Two Small But Challenging Noncovalent Dimers: P2)2 And (Pccp) 2, Eric Van Dornshuld, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work characterizes eight stationary points of the P2 dimer and six stationary points of the PCCP dimer, including a newly identified minimum on both potential energy surfaces. Full geometry optimizations and corresponding harmonic vibrational frequencies were computed with the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) electronic structure method and six different basis sets: aug-cc-pVXZ, aug-cc-pV(X+d)Z, and aug-cc-pCVXZ where X = T, Q. A new L-shaped structure with C2 symmetry is the only minimum for the P2 dimer at the MP2 level of theory with these basis sets. The previously reported parallel-slipped structure with C2h symmetry and a newly identified …

Computational Study Of The Rovibrational Spectrum Of Co₂-Cs₂, James Corgan Brown, Xiao-Gang Wang, Tucker Carrington Jr., Garry S. Grubbs, Richard Dawes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new intermolecular potential energy surface, rovibrational transition frequencies, and line strengths are computed for CO2-CS2. the potential is made by fitting energies obtained from explicitly correlated coupled-cluster calculations using an interpolating moving least squares method. the rovibrational Schrödinger equation is solved with a symmetry-adapted Lanczos algorithm and an uncoupled product basis set. All four intermolecular coordinates are included in the calculation. in agreement with previous experiments, the global minimum of the potential energy surface (PES) is cross shaped. the PES also has slipped-parallel minima. Rovibrational wavefunctions are localized in the cross minima and the slipped-parallel …

We investigate the cosmological implications of the latest growth of structure measurement from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS Data Release 11 with particular focus on the sum of the neutrino masses, Σmv. We examine the robustness of the cosmological constraints from the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale, the Alcock-Paczynski effect and redshift-space distortions (DV/rs, FAP, fσ8) of Beutler et al., when introducing a neutrino mass in the power spectrum template. We then discuss how the neutrino mass relaxes discrepancies between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and other low-redshift …

A diverse set of tectonic features and the recent availability of high-quality broadband seismic data from the USArray and other stations on the northern Great Plains of North America provide a distinct opportunity to test different anisotropy-forming mechanisms. A total of 4138 pairs of well-defined splitting parameters observed at 445 stations show systematic spatial variations of anisotropic characteristics. Azimuthally invariant fast orientations subparallel to the absolute plate motion (APM) direction are observed at most of the stations on the Superior Craton and the southern Yavapai province, indicating that a single layer of anisotropy with a horizontal axis of symmetry is …

Structural Study Of Na2o-Feo-Fe2o3-P 2o5 Glasses By High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography, Lina Ma, Richard K. Brow

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three series of Na2O-FeO-Fe2O3-P2O5 glasses with compositional ranges of 3.25 < O/P < 3.5 and 0 < Fe/P < 0.67 were prepared. Glass structure was studied using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The average chain-length of phosphate anions decreases with increasing O/P ratios and glasses with similar O/P ratios and greater Fe/P ratios have wider distributions of phosphate anion lengths due to disproportionation reactions in the glass melts. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The Afar Depression is an ideal locale for the investigation of crustal processes involved in the transition from continental rifting to oceanic spreading. To provide relatively high resolution images of the crust beneath the Red Sea rift (RSR) represented by the Tendaho graben in the Afar Depression, we deployed an array of 18 broadband seismic stations in 2010 and 2011. Stacking of about 2300 receiver functions from the 18 and several nearby stations along the ~200 km long array reveals an average crustal thickness of 22 ± 4 km, ranging from ~17 km near the RSR axis to 30 km …

Porous Titania Microspheres With Uniform Wall Thickness And High Photoactivity, Xinhua Liang, Rajankumar L. Patel

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Highly porous titania particles were prepared by depositing thin films of titania, using alternating reactions of TiCl4 and hydrogen peroxide, on poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) (PS-DVB) template particles via atomic layer deposition (ALD) at 77 C. The composition of the titania films was verified by XPS analysis, and the titania films were directly observed by TEM. TGA/DSC was used to study the thermal decomposition of the polymer template. Porous titania particles with uniform wall thicknesses were successfully obtained after the template PS-DVB was removed by oxidation in air at 400 C for 24 h. Verification of the resulting porous structure of the titania …

A Comparative Study Of The Mechanical Properties, Fracture Behavior, Creep, And Shrinkage Of Chemically Based Self-Consolidating Concrete, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Mark Ezzell, Jeffery S. Volz

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study presents the results of an experimental investigation that compares the mechanical properties, fracture behavior, creep, and shrinkage of a chemically based self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mix with that of a corresponding conventional concrete (CC) mix. The CC and SCC mix designs followed conventional proportioning in terms of aggregate type and content, cement content, air content, water-cementitious materials (w/cm) ratio, and workability. Then, using only chemical admixtures, the authors converted the CC mix to an SCC mix with all of the necessary passing, filling, flowability, and stability requirements typically found in SCC. The high fluidity was achieved with a polycarboxylate-based …

Phonon density of states (PDOS) measurements have been performed on polycrystalline UO2 at 295 and 1200 K using time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the impact of anharmonicity on the vibrational spectra and to benchmark ab initio PDOS simulations performed on this strongly correlated Mott insulator. Time-of-flight PDOS measurements include anharmonic linewidth broadening, inherently, and the factor of ~7 enhancement of the oxygen spectrum relative to the uranium component by the increased neutron sensitivity to the oxygen-dominated optical phonon modes. The first-principles simulations of quasiharmonic PDOS spectra were neutron weighted and anharmonicity was introduced in an approximate way by …

An emerging trend in many applications is to use resource-constrained wireless devices for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The observed proliferation of wireless embedded systems is expected to have a significant impact on future M2M applications if the services provided can be automatically discovered and accessed at runtime. In order to realize the decoupling of M2M applications and services, energy efficient service discovery mechanisms must be designed so as to minimize human intervention during configuration and management phases. However, many traditional service discovery protocols cannot be applied to wireless constrained devices because they introduce too much overhead, fail in a duty-cycled environment …

While adaptive control has been used in numerous applications to achieve system performance without excessive reliance on dynamical system models, the necessity of high-gain learning rates for safety-critical systems to achieve fast adaptation can be a serious limitation of most adaptive controllers. In order to address this problem, two novel adaptive control approaches developed recently aim to limit the bandwidth of the closed-loop adaptive control system in order to suppress the high-frequency content contained in the system error dynamics and adaptation algorithms. Specifically, this key feature of these frameworks allows for robust and fast adaptation by utilizing high-gain learning rates …

An Experimental Investigation Of Crumb Rubber Concrete Confined By Fibre Reinforced Polymer Tubes, Osama Youssf, Mohamed Elgawady, Julie E. Mills, Xing Ma

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Due to the known loss of compressive strength experienced by crumb rubber concrete (CRC) compared with conventional concrete, there have been few applications explored to date for the structural use of these materials. This paper describes experimental work conducted to explore the possible future use of CRC for structural columns by evaluating the use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) confinement as a means of overcoming the material deficiencies (decreased compressive strength). The results indicated that the use of FRP to confine rubberized concrete effectively negates the decrease in strength and retains the advantages of increased ductility that arise from rubberized …

A passive chipless radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag based on a log-periodic (LP) dipole array is proposed, where the tailorable bandrejection property of the LP aperture is utilised to realise a large number of codes. The proposed tag principle is successfully validated by measurements, where the absence and presence of the band-rejection is shown to carry the bit information. Its fabrication simplicity is also demonstrated by its implementation on a flexible substrate. Finally, two different tag formation schemes, based on a specific set of resonance suppressions, are discussed in detail. © 2014 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Participatory sensing is an approach to data collection for monitoring different scenarios with the help of smartphone sensors. As more and more sensors are being added to smartphones, monitoring a wide range of scenarios has become possible with participatory sensing. An important issue in such participatory sensing application is the coverage of the collected data that reflects how well the data samples represent the monitored area. In the traditional approach, the data collection process is assisted by a server that knows the location of the participating devices and selects the necessary ones to cover the monitored area efficiently. However, for …
