Fully Differential Cross Sections For Electron-Impact Excitation-Ionization Of Aligned D₂, Esam Ali, A. L. Harris, J. Lower, E. Weigold, Chuang-Gang Ning, Don H. Madison
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We examine fully differential cross sections for 176 eV electron-impact dissociative excitation-ionization of orientated D2 for transitions to final ion states 2sσg, 2pσu, and 2pπu. In previous work [Phys. Rev. A 88, 062705 (2013)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.88.062705], we calculated these cross sections using the molecular four-body distorted wave (M4DW) method with the ground-state D2 wave function being approximated by a product of two Dyson 1s-type orbitals. The theoretical results were compared with experimental measurements for five different orientations of the target molecule (four in the scattering plane and one perpendicular to the scattering plane). For the unresolved …

Stress-induced and thermal-induced depolarization studies along with X-ray diffraction were performed on lead zirconate titanate ferroelectrics of different compositions, PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT 52/48) and PbZr0.95Ti0.05O3 (PZT 95/5). Specimens were shocked loaded perpendicular to the polarization vector. It was found that the polarity of the stress-induced charge released by PZT 52/48 and 95/5 was opposite to the polarity of the charge generated due to the piezoelectric effect. PZT 52/48 was only partially (45%) depolarized under 1.5±0.1 GPa mechanical compression, as opposed to PZT 95/5 which was fully depolarized. The experimental results indicate …

Neural Circuitry Underlying The Central Hypertensive Action Of Nesfatin-1: Melanocortins, Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone, And Oxytocin, Gina L.C. Yosten, Willis K. Samson
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nesfatin-1 is produced in the periphery and in the brain where it has been demonstrated to regulate appetite, stress hormone secretion, and cardiovascular function. The anorexigenic action of central nesfatin-1 requires recruitment of neurons producing the melanocortins and centrally projecting oxytocin (OT) and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) neurons. We previously have shown that two components of this pathway, the central melanocortin and oxytocin systems, contribute to the hypertensive action of nesfatin-1 as well. We hypothesized that the cardiovascular effect of nesfatin-1 also was dependent on activation of neurons expressing CRH receptors, and that the order of activation of the melanocortin-CRH-oxytocin circuit …

Homogeneous And Heterogeneous Noncovalent Dimers Of Formaldehyde And Thioformaldehyde: Structures, Energetics, And Vibrational Frequencies, Eric Van Dornshuld, Christina M. Holy, Gregory S. Tschumper
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
This work provides the first characterization of five stationary points of the homogeneous thioformaldehyde dimer, (CH2S)2, and seven stationary points of the heterogeneous formaldehyde/thioformaldehyde dimer, CH2O/CH2S, with correlated ab initio electronic structure methods. Full geometry optimizations and corresponding harmonic vibrational frequencies were computed with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and 13 different density functionals in conjunction with triple-ζ basis sets augmented with diffuse and multiple sets of polarization functions. The MP2 results indicate that the three stationary points of (CH2S)2 and four of CH2O/CH2S are …

Ceramic Welds, And A Method For Producing The Same, Greg Hilmas, William Fahrenholtz, Jeremy Lee Watts, Harlan James Brown-Shaklee
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A method of producing a ceramic weld, including identifying a ceramic first surface and a ceramic second surface to be bonded together, maintaining a non-oxidizing atmosphere over the first and second surfaces, and engaging the first and second surfaces to define a joint. An arc is generated between an electrode and the joint to create a liquid phase, and the liquid phase is cooled to yield a solid fusion layer, wherein the first and second surfaces are joined in the fusion layer.

The Effects of Flight Behavior on Physiology and Senescence May Be Profound in Insects Because of the Extremely High Metabolic Costs of Flight. Flight Capacity in Insects Decreases with Age; in Contrast, Limiting Flight Behavior Extends Lifespan and Slows the Age-Related Loss of Antioxidant Capacity and Accumulation of Oxidative Damage in Flight Muscles. in This Study, We Tested the Effects of Age and Lifetime Flight Behavior on Flight Capacity by Measuring Wingbeat Frequency, the Ability to Fly in a Hypo-Dense Gas Mixture, and Metabolic Rate in Drosophila Melanogaster. Specifically, 5-Day-Old Adult Flies Were Separated into Three Life-Long Treatments: (1) Those …

Geological storage of CO₂ (GCS), also referred to as carbon sequestration, is a critical component for decreasing anthropogenic CO₂ atmospheric emissions. Stored CO₂ will exist as a supercritical phase, most likely in deep, saline, sedimentary reservoirs. Research at the Center for Frontiers of Subsurface Energy Security (CFSES), a Department of Energy, Energy Frontier Research Center, provides insights into the storage process. The integration of pore-scale experiments, molecular dynamics simulations, and study of natural analogue sites has enabled understanding of the efficacy of capillary, solubility, and dissolution trapping of CO₂ for GCS. Molecular dynamics simulations provide insight on relative wetting of …

We show that flexoelectric effect is responsible for the non-Ising character of a 180° ferroelectric domain wall. The wall, long considered being of Ising type, contains both Bloch- and Néel-type polarization components. Using the example of classic ferroelectric BaTiO3, and by incorporating the flexoelectric effect into a phase-field model, it is demonstrated that the flexoelectric effect arising from stress inhomogeneity around the domain wall leads to the additional Bloch and Néel polarization components. The magnitudes of these additional components are two or three magnitudes smaller than the Ising component, and they are determined by the competing depolarization and flexoelectric fields. …

We report on a kinematically complete experiment on ionization of H2 by proton impact. While a significant impact of the projectile coherence properties on the scattering-angle dependence of double-differential cross sections (DDCSs), reported earlier, is confirmed by the present data, only weak coherence effects are found in the electron and recoil-ion momentum dependence of the DDCSs. This suggests that the phase angle in the interference term is determined primarily by the projectile momentum transfer rather than by the recoil-ion momentum. We therefore cannot rule out the possibility that the interference observed in our data is not primarily due to …

We present a one per cent measurement of the cosmic distance scale from the detections of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the clustering of galaxies from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, which is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III. Our results come from the Data Release 11 (DR11) sample, containing nearly one million galaxies and covering approximately 8500 square degrees and the redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.7. We also compare these results with those from the publicly released DR9 and DR10 samples. Assuming a concordance Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model, the DR11 sample covers a volume of 13 Gpc3 and is the largest region of the Universe ever surveyed at this density. We measure the correlation function and power spectrum, including density-field reconstruction of the BAO feature. The acoustic features …

We report results from a search for gravitational waves produced by perturbed intermediate mass black holes (IMBH) in data collected by LIGO and Virgo between 2005 and 2010. The search was sensitive to astrophysical sources that produced damped sinusoid gravitational wave signals, also known as ringdowns, with frequency 50 ≤ f0/Hz ≤ 2000 and decay timescale 0.0001 ≲ τ/s ≲ 0.1 characteristic of those produced in mergers of IMBH pairs. No significant gravitational wave candidate was detected. We report upper limits on the astrophysical coalescence rates of IMBHs with total binary mass 50 ≤ M/M⊙ ≤ 450 and …

We present a shear wave splitting (SWS) database for the western and central United States as part of a lasting effort to build a uniform SWS database for the entire North America. The SWS measurements were obtained by minimizing the energy on the transverse component of the PKS, SKKS, and SKS phases. Each of the individual measurements was visually checked to ensure quality. This version of the database contains 16,105 pairs of splitting parameters. The data used to generate the parameters were recorded by 1774 digital broadband seismic stations over the period of 1989-2012, and represented all the available data …
