Characterizing The B-P Stretching Vibration In Phosphorus-Substituted Phosphine Boranes, Dana N. Reinemann, Gregory S. Tschumper, Nathan I. Hammer Jun 2014

Characterizing The B-P Stretching Vibration In Phosphorus-Substituted Phosphine Boranes, Dana N. Reinemann, Gregory S. Tschumper, Nathan I. Hammer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The experimental Raman spectra of three phosphorus-substituted phosphine boranes with bulky hydrocarbon substituents are presented and compared to the results of electronic structure computations by using the M06-2X method and the 6-311G(2df,-2pd) basis set. Total-energy distributions (TEDs) are calculated to describe the degree of mixing of the dative-bond stretching vibration with other simple internal coordinates. This level of theory is found to accurately reproduce the B-P stretching frequency in all three crystalline solids. The Raman spectra of five smaller B-P-containing molecules, including BH3PH3, are also simulated at this level of theory and compared to previous experimental …

Local liquid velocity measurements in Trickle Bed Reactors (TBRs) are one of the essential components in its hydrodynamic studies. These measurements are used to effectively determine a reactor's operating condition. This study was conducted to validate a newly developed technique that combines Digital Industrial Radiography (DIR) with Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) to measure the Local Liquid Velocity (VLL) inside TBRs. Three millimeter-sized Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) beads were used as packing material. Three validation procedures were designed to test the newly developed technique. All procedures and statistical approaches provided strong evidence that the technique can be used to measure …

Student poster sessions at conferences can be valuable experiences for undergraduate and graduate students and can enrich the conference program for all participants. Student poster presentations beyond the local campus can provide additional experience in professional communication (especially in preparing succinct abstracts and in effective visual design), can prepare students for future conference participations, and can facilitate student-faculty interaction. Several issues exist when including student poster sessions in engineering education conferences. How can the content of posters be related to an engineering education theme? How are communication principles of audience and purpose incorporated into the session guidelines and review process? …

Effect Of Weak Magnetic Field On Arsenate And Arsenite Removal From Water By Zerovalent Iron: An Xafs Investigation, Yuankui Sun, Xiaohong Guan, Jianmin Wang, Xiaoguang Meng, Chunhua Xu, Gongming Zhou

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, a weak magnetic field (WMF), superimposed with a permanent magnet, was utilized to improve ZVI corrosion and thereby enhance As(V)/As(III) removal by ZVI at pHini 3.0-9.0. The experiment with real arsenic-bearing groundwater revealed that WMF could greatly improve arsenic removal by ZVI even in the presence of various cations and anions. The WMF-induced improvement in As(V)/As(III) removal by ZVI should be primarily associated with accelerated ZVI corrosion, as evidenced by the pH variation, Fe2+ release, and the formation of corrosion products as characterized with X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The arsenic species analysis in solution/solid phases at …

A Novel Asymptotic Expansion Homogenization Analysis For 3-D Composite With Relieved Periodicity In The Thickness Direction, Muhammad Ridlo Erdata Nasution, Naoyuki Watanabe, Atsushi Kondo, Arief Yudhanto Jun 2014

A Novel Asymptotic Expansion Homogenization Analysis For 3-D Composite With Relieved Periodicity In The Thickness Direction, Muhammad Ridlo Erdata Nasution, Naoyuki Watanabe, Atsushi Kondo, Arief Yudhanto

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new asymptotic expansion homogenization analysis is proposed to analyze 3-D composite in which thermomechanical and finite thickness effects are considered. Finite thickness effect is captured by relieving periodic boundary condition at the top and bottom of unit-cell surfaces. The mathematical treatment yields that only 2-D periodicity (i.e. in in-plane directions) is taken into account. A unit-cell representing the whole thickness of 3-D composite is built to facilitate the present method. The equivalent in-plane thermomechanical properties of 3-D orthogonal interlock composites are calculated by present method, and the results are compared with those obtained by standard homogenization method (with 3-D …

Effects Of Lead And Cadmium On Brain Endothelial Cell Survival, Monolayer Permeability, And Crucial Oxidative Stress Markers In An In Vitro Model Of The Blood-Brain Barrier, Shakila Tobwala, Hsiu Jen Wang, Joshua Warren Carey, William A. Banks, Nuran Ercal

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oxidative stress, which is the loss of balance between antioxidant defense and oxidant production in the cells, is implicated in the molecular mechanism of heavy metal-induced neurotoxicity. Given the key role of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in inducing oxidative stress, we investigated their role in disrupting the integrity and function of immortalized human brain microvascular endothelial cells (hCMEC/D3). To study this, hCMEC/D3 cells were exposed to control media or to media containing different concentrations of Pb or Cd. Those exposed to Pb or Cd showed significantly higher oxidative stress than the untreated group, as indicated by cell viability, reactive …

Outsourceable Two-Party Privacy-Preserving Biometric Authentication, Hu Chun, Yousef Elmehdwi, Feng Li, Prabir Bhattacharya, Wei Jiang Jun 2014

Outsourceable Two-Party Privacy-Preserving Biometric Authentication, Hu Chun, Yousef Elmehdwi, Feng Li, Prabir Bhattacharya, Wei Jiang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Biometric authentication, a key component for many secure protocols and applications, is a process of authenticating a user by matching her biometric data against a biometric database stored at a server managed by an entity. If there is a match, the user can log into her account or obtain the services provided by the entity. Privacy-preserving biometric authentication (PPBA) considers a situation where the biometric data are kept private during the authentication process. That is the user's biometric data record is never disclosed to the entity, and the data stored in the entity's biometric database are never disclosed to the …

Extreme Self-Adjoint Extensions Of A Semibounded Q-Difference Operator, Miron B. Bekker, Martin Bohner, Hristo Voulov Jun 2014

Extreme Self-Adjoint Extensions Of A Semibounded Q-Difference Operator, Miron B. Bekker, Martin Bohner, Hristo Voulov

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For a certain q-difference operator introduced and studied in a series of articles by the same authors, we investigate its extreme self-adjoint extensions, i.e., the so-called Friedrichs and Kreǐn extensions. We show that for the interval of parameters under consideration, the Friedrichs extension and the Kreǐn extension are distinct and give values of the parameter in the von Neumann formulas that correspond to those extensions and describe their resolvent operators. A crucial role in our investigation plays the fact that both the Friedrichs and the Kreǐn extensions are scale invariant. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

Neuronostatin Inhibits Glucose-Stimulated Insulin Secretion Via Direct Action On The Pancreatic Α-Cell, Alison S. Salvatori, Mollisa M. Elrick, Willis K. Samson, John A. Corbett, Gina L.C. Yosten Jun 2014

Neuronostatin Inhibits Glucose-Stimulated Insulin Secretion Via Direct Action On The Pancreatic Α-Cell, Alison S. Salvatori, Mollisa M. Elrick, Willis K. Samson, John A. Corbett, Gina L.C. Yosten

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neuronostatin is a recently described peptide hormone encoded by the somatostatin gene. We previously showed that intraperitoneal injection of neuronostatin into mice resulted in c-Jun accumulation in pancreatic islets in a pattern consistent with the activation of glucagon-producing α-cells. We therefore hypothesized that neuronostatin could influence glucose homeostasis via a direct effect on the α-cell. Neuronostatin enhanced low-glucose-induced glucagon release in isolated rat islets and in the immortalized α-cell line αTC1-9. Furthermore, incubation with neuronostatin led to an increase in transcription of glucagon mRNA, as determined by RT-PCR. Neuronostatin also inhibited glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from isolated islets. However, neuronostatin did …

Methods And Results Of A Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With Gamma-Ray Bursts Using The Geo 600, Ligo, And Virgo Detectors, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website. Jun 2014

Methods And Results Of A Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With Gamma-Ray Bursts Using The Geo 600, Ligo, And Virgo Detectors, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we report on a search for short-duration gravitational wave bursts in the frequency range 64 Hz-1792 Hz associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), using data from GEO 600 and one of the LIGO or Virgo detectors. We introduce the method of a linear search grid to analyze GRB events with large sky localization uncertainties, for example the localizations provided by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). Coherent searches for gravitational waves (GWs) can be computationally intensive when the GRB sky position is not well localized, due to the corrections required for the difference in arrival time between detectors. …

The Structure Of D₂O-Nonane Nanodroplets, Harshad Pathak, Abdalla Obeidat, Gerald Wilemski, Barbara Wyslouzil

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the internal structure of nanometer-sized D2O-nonane aerosol droplets formed in supersonic nozzle expansions using a variety of experimental techniques including small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). By fitting the SAXS spectra to a wide range of droplet structure models, we find that the experimental results are inconsistent with mixed droplets that form aqueous core-organic shell structures, but are quite consistent with spherically asymmetric lens-on-sphere structures. The structure that agrees best with the SAXS data and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy measurements is that of a nonane lens on a sphere of D2O with a contact angle in the …

Simultaneous Measurement Of Temperature And Pressure With Cascaded Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer And Intrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer Sensors, Yinan Zhang, Jie Huang, Xinwei Lan, Lei Yuan, Hai Xiao Jun 2014

Simultaneous Measurement Of Temperature And Pressure With Cascaded Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer And Intrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer Sensors, Yinan Zhang, Jie Huang, Xinwei Lan, Lei Yuan, Hai Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an approach for simultaneous measurement of temperature and pressure using miniaturized fiber inline sensors. The approach utilizes the cascaded optical fiber inline intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer and extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer as temperature and pressure sensing elements, respectively. A CO2 laser was used to create a loss between them to balance their reflection power levels. The multiplexed signals were demodulated using a Fast Fourier transform-based wavelength tracking method. Experimental results showed that the sensing system could measure temperature and pressure unambiguously in a pressure range of 0 to 6.895 x 105 Pa and a temperature range from …

Search For Gravitational Radiation From Intermediate Mass Black Hole Binaries In Data From The Second Ligo-Virgo Joint Science Run, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports on an unmodeled, all-sky search for gravitational waves from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHB). The search was performed on data from the second joint science run of the LIGO and Virgo detectors (July 2009-October 2010) and was sensitive to IMBHBs with a range up to ∼200Mpc, averaged over the possible sky positions and inclinations of the binaries with respect to the line of sight. No significant candidate was found. Upper limits on the coalescence-rate density of nonspinning IMBHBs with total masses between 100 and 450M⊙ and mass ratios between 0.25 and 1 were placed …

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls With Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (Fm-Cw) Radar, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Yi Bao, Kuang Ying, K. M. Combs, R. Zoughi, Genda Chen Jun 2014

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls With Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (Fm-Cw) Radar, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Yi Bao, Kuang Ying, K. M. Combs, R. Zoughi, Genda Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective techniques for a nondestructive evaluation of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls during normal operation or immediately after an earthquake event are yet to be developed. MSE walls often have a rough surface finishing for the purpose of decoration and are reinforced with both horizontal and vertical steel bars. Two wide-band microwave inspection approaches were investigated for detecting and evaluating characteristics of materials behind an MSE wall section. The first approach used spot measurements with a wide-band frequency-modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) radar system. While effective to penetrate through mortar blocks in the laboratory, the radar system was found to have …

Theoretical Triple-Differential Cross Sections Of A Methane Molecule By A Proper-Average Method, Hari Chaluvadi, C. G. Ning, Don H. Madison Jun 2014

Theoretical Triple-Differential Cross Sections Of A Methane Molecule By A Proper-Average Method, Hari Chaluvadi, C. G. Ning, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For the last few years, our group has calculated cross sections for electron-impact ionization of molecules using the molecular three-body distorted-wave approximation coupled with the orientation-averaged molecular orbital (OAMO) approximation. This approximation was very successful for calculating ionization cross sections for hydrogen molecules and to a lesser extent nitrogen molecules. Recently we used the approximation to calculate single ionization cross sections for the 1t2 state of methane (CH4) and we found major discrepancies with the experimental data. Here we investigate the validity of the OAMO approximation by calculating cross sections that have been properly averaged over all …

Both silicate melts and aqueous fluids are thought to play critical roles in the chemical differentiation of the Earth's crust and mantle. Yet their relative effects are poorly constrained. We have addressed this issue by measuring partition coefficients for 50 trace and minor elements in experimentally produced aqueous fluids, coexisting basanite melts, and peridotite minerals. The experiments were conducted at 1.0-4.0 GPa and 950-1200°C in single capsules containing (either 40 or 50 wt %) H2O and trace element-enriched basanite glass. This allowed run products to be easily identified and analyzed by a combination of electron microprobe and LAM-ICP-MS. …

Development Of Bridge Girder Movement Criteria For Accelerated Bridge Construction, Genda Chen, Yi Bao Jun 2014

Development Of Bridge Girder Movement Criteria For Accelerated Bridge Construction, Genda Chen, Yi Bao

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

End diaphragms connect multiple girders to form a bridge superstructure system for effective resistance to earthquake loads. Concrete girder bridges that include end diaphragms consistently proved to perform well during previous earthquake events. However, whether concrete bridges without end diaphragms are definitively inadequate in seismic performance is yet to be answered. The 2010 Chile Earthquake indicated that properly designed bridge girders and their lateral movement stoppers (shear keys) may perform equally well with those with end diaphragms. In this report, a feasibility study on the design of girder bridges without end diaphragms is presented. This study is particularly significant in …

Splice Performance Evaluation Of Enamel-Coated Rebar For Structural Safety, Genda Chen, Chenglin Wu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This report summarizes the findings and results from an experimental study of vitreous enamel coating effects on the bond strength between deformed rebar and normal strength concrete. A total of 24 beam splice specimens were tested under four-point loading with four parameters investigated: bar size, lap splice length, coating, and confinement conditions. As the splice length increases, the ratio of bond strength between coated rebar and black rebar first increases from 1.0 to a maximum value of 1.44, and then decreases to 1.0. The maximum bond strength ratio corresponds to the near initial yielding of coated rebar. On the average, …

Graph-Regularized Dual Lasso For Robust Eqtl Mapping, Wei Cheng, Xiang Zhang, Zhishan Guo, Yu Shi, Wei Wang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Motivation: As a promising tool for dissecting the genetic basis of complex traits, expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) mapping has attracted increasing research interest. An important issue in eQTL mapping is how to effectively integrate networks representing interactions among genetic markers and genes. Recently, several Lasso-based methods have been proposed to leverage such network information. Despite their success, existing methods have three common limitations: (i) a preprocessing step is usually needed to cluster the networks; (ii) the incompleteness of the networks and the noise in them are not considered; (iii) other available information, such as location of genetic markers and …

With the aim of developing appropriate scaffolds for tissue engineering to suppress the formation of biofilms, an effective one-pot process was applied in this study to produce scaffolds with inherent antibacterial activity. A new method to synthesize genipin-crosslinked gelatin/nano silver scaffolds with "green" in situ formation of silver nanoparticles by heat treatment is presented in this paper. In this procedure, toxic solvents, reducing agents, and stabilizing agents are avoided. UV-visible absorption spectra of the synthesized gelatin/nano silver solutions were obtained immediately and three months after the synthesis revealing the presence and high stability of the silver nanoparticles. Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With Γ-Ray Bursts Detected By The Interplanetary Network, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 223 γ-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) in 2005-2010 during LIGO's fifth and sixth science runs and Virgo's first, second, and third science runs. The IPN satellites provide accurate times of the bursts and sky localizations that vary significantly from degree scale to hundreds of square degrees. We search for both a well-modeled binary coalescence signal, the favored progenitor model for short GRBs, and for generic, unmodeled gravitational wave bursts. Both searches use the event time and sky localization to improve the gravitational wave search …

Fabrication Of Multifunctional Ferromagnetic Au₃Pd-Cose Nanoparticles, Wipula P. Liyanage, Sukhada Mishra, Kai Song, Manashi Nath

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have synthesized multifunctional anisotropic Au3Pd-CoSe nanoparticles on Si substrate through a catalyst aided chemical vapour deposition technique. the technique utilized volatile cobalt acetylacetonate and elemental selenium as precursors while sputter coated Au-Pd (3:2) film acted as a catalyst. the typical growth conditions led to clear segregation of the hetero-compositions (i.e. Au3Pd and CoSe) in the product nanostructures thereby preserving the functionality of both the phases. the degree of crystallinity of the individual phases in the composite nanostructure was fairly high. the bifunctional nanoparticles show soft ferromagnetic behaviour at room temperature and optical activity making them …
