Simulating Realistic Lyman-š¼ Emitters Including The Effect Of Radiative Transfer, Hasti Khoraminezhad, Shun Saito, Max Gronke, Chris Byrohl
Research Data
We present an empirical yet physically motivated simulation of realistic Lyman-š¼ emitters (LAEs) at š§ ā¼ 2 ā 3, crucial for ongoing and forthcoming cosmological LAE surveys. We combine an empirical UniverseMachine galaxy-halo model with a simple spherical expanding shell model for the Lyman-š¼ radiative transfer, calibrating only three free parameters to simultaneously reproduce the observed Lyman-š¼ luminosity function and the angular clustering. Our LAE model is further supported by its consistency with other observables such as the Lyman-š¼ equivalent width distribution, the Lyman-š¼ escape fraction as a function of stellar mass and dust reddening, and the systemic velocity offsets. ā¦

Advancing sodium-ion battery (SIB) technology requires novel approaches to optimize cathode materials for improved electrochemical performance. In this study, we employ atomic layer deposition (ALD) to precisely modify the surface of P2-type Na0.7MnO2 cathodes with different coating materials including ZnO, NiO, and Al2O3, followed by post-annealing at 750°C for 10 hours. The strategic combination of ALD and thermal treatment can achieve thin film coating on particle surface and promote element doping into the near-surface lattice, as confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis. The incorporation of Zn, Al, and Ni results in ā¦

Linear poly(ethylenimine) (LPEI) is a hydration-sensitive polymer of interest for its breadth of application in areas that include medicine, energy, and materials science. To facilitate advances, this work demonstrates in situ Raman microscopy and self-modeling curve resolution (SMCR) analysis as an approach for investigating changes in LPEI structure during melting and crystallization under controlled heating and cooling conditions. With focus on neutral (freebase) LPEI, SMCR analysis of Raman data sets showed that the melting transition of anhydrous LPEI was well described by a pair of spectral vectors representing anhydrous crystalline and amorphous states. However, the transition from the melted to ā¦

This study investigates the bond behavior of steel H-pile encased in concrete jackets under push-out loading, considering the effects of concrete type and embedment length. Nine full-scale specimens were tested using three concrete types: ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), Methyl Methacrylate Polymer Concrete (MMA-PC), and conventional concrete (CC), with embedment lengths of 63.5 mm, 127 mm, and 190.5 mm. The experimental results revealed that MMA-PC jacket demonstrated the highest bond strength, though gains were marginal beyond 127 mm. UHPC exhibited superior tensile strength and ductility, preventing splitting failure. UHPC also displayed the highest interfacial fracture energy of 9.63 N/mm, exceeding MMA-PC and ā¦

As water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) pursue decarbonization, the treatment of concentrated side streams from anaerobic digestion offers a critical opportunity to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. This study evaluated the intensification potential of revolving algal biofilms (RAB) for side stream nutrient removal via partial nitrification at pilot- and demonstration-scales. RAB systems were deployed at municipal WRRFs in Boulder and Iowa City, treating real dewatering side streams across a range of ammonium (NH4+āN) surface area loading rates (SALR) reaching up to 196 g N mā2dā2. The results demonstrated that RAB systems can ā¦

Relative humidity and water activity (aH) reductions have been known to suppress the hydration of anhydrous cement clinker phases. However, the relationship between ye'elimite (C4A3$) hydration kinetics and water activity remain unclear. This study employs experimental and thermodynamic modeling approaches to investigate the influence of water activity on ye'elimite hydration in the "C4A3$ + water", and "C4A3$ + gypsum + water" systems. Experimental findings indicate that as water activity decreases, C4A3$ hydration diminishes until the reaction is brought to a halt at a threshold aH. The critical aHand corresponding solubility constant of C4A3$ (KC4A3SĀÆ) estimated from thermodynamic analysis are 0.46 ā¦

Multilayer phase coherence is demonstrated in a mixed morphology superlattice heterostructure, generalizing the paradigm for superlattice miniband engineering. Thirty years since the original proposal by Tsu, a superlattice has been realized with alternating amorphous (a-MoO3) and polycrystalline (pc-In2O3) layers, whose high-quality exhibits quantum phase coherence across multiple periods of amorphous barriers. Cross-plane phase coherence is quantified via weak localization signatures in magnetic field under the diffusive Fermi-surface model.

Commercially available single crystals of (111) SrTiO3Ā were found to contain impurities of varying amounts that strongly affected their dielectric performance at cryogenic temperatures. Three crystals with total impurities of 111, 126, and 625 ppm, primarily of barium and yttrium, were analyzed. Relative permittivity (εr) and loss tangent were investigated with high resolution as a function of temperature (4 K to 100 K), DC voltage (0 V/cm to 800 V/cm), and frequency (100 Hz to 1 MHz). An impurity level as low as ā500 ppm barium resulted in an increase of the maximum permittivity (εm) to approximately 50,000 at ā¦

Metal additive manufacturing (MAM), also referred to as 3D printing, has proven remarkable in the fabrication of complex metal components in multiple sectors. However, the assessment of this revolutionary process through bending fatigue is frequently impeded due to concerns about mechanical and physical conditions of the printed components. The unique layer-by-layer production process results in varied microstructures, anisotropy, and intrinsic defects that considerably differ from traditionally manufactured wrought metals. This review article aims to integrate and evaluate historical and contemporary research on the bending fatigue of additively manufactured materials. More specifically, the impact of process parameters, build orientation, surface conditions, ā¦

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are widely used in electric vehicles (EVs) for their high energy density. However, their fire safety causes concerns because of the toxic gases emission and the challenge to extinguish. The type and quantity of toxic gases released during battery fires remain among the least studied hazards, with limited data available despite their serious health risks. This study examines the thermal and gaseous emission behavior of LIB cells after thermal runaway (TR). Five cell types, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP), Lithium Titanate (LTO), and three Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide (NMC). The three NMC variants share the same base ā¦

Underground mine emergencies destroy communication infrastructure when situational awareness is most critical. Current systems rely on centralized network infrastructure, which fails during emergencies when miners are trapped and require rescue coordination. This paper proposes an energy-harvesting LoRa mesh network that addresses self-powered operation, interference management, and adaptive physical layer optimization under severe underground propagation conditions. A dual-antenna architecture separates RF energy harvesting (860 MHz) from LoRa communication (915 MHz), enabling continuous operation with supercapacitor storage. The core contribution is a decentralized scheduler that derives optimal timing offsets by modeling concurrent transmissions as a Poisson collision process, exploiting LoRa's capture effect ā¦

Imaging techniques such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse optical tomography (DOT) achieve deep, noninvasive sensing in turbid media; however, they are constrained by the photon budget, as most of the injected light is lost to scattering before reaching the detector. Wavefront shaping (WFS) can enhance signal strength via interference at specific locations within scattering media, enhancing light-matter interactions and potentially extending the penetration depth of these techniques. Interpretation of the resulting measurements relies on knowing the optical sensitivity - the relationship between changes in the detected signals and perturbations at a specific location inside the medium; however, conventional diffusion-based ā¦

The Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) energy correction at the edge of the mean-field stability regime is known to give rise to beyond mean-field structures in a wide variety of systems. In this work, we analytically derive the LHY energy for two-, three-and four-component one-dimensional bosonic short-range interacting mixtures across the mean-field stability regime. For varying intercomponent attraction in the two-component setting, quantitative deviations from the original LHY treatment emerge being imprinted in the droplet saturation density and width. On the other hand, for repulsive interactions an unseen early onset of phase-separation occurs for both homonuclear and heteronuclear mixtures. Closed LHY expressions for ā¦

Directed Energy Deposition (DED) is a promising technology for producing metal matrix composites (MMXCs), but precise control over deposited layer dimensions, particularly in multi-material systems, remains difficult to achieve due to the complex interdependence of operating parameters such as laser parameters, feedstock flow rate, and beam energy attenuation. To address these problems, this work proposes an analytical model that predicts the width, height, and depth of the deposited layers using mixed feedstock compositions in-situ, with a focus on Inconel-718 and TiC MMXCs. The model takes into account variables such as laser power, feedstock density, and mixing ratios to improve layer ā¦

MXenes have attracted considerable attention due to their tunable surface chemistry, high electrical conductivity, and ease of solution processing, making them promising candidates for a wide array of applications. The inherent tendency of MXenes to degrade under environmental conditions constrains their compositional diversity and limits certain practical applications. Our computational study shows that degradation of defect-free Ti3C2Txis kinetically limited, whereas common defects markedly lower the activation barriers for water attack. Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) combined with thermodynamic analysis, we show that titanium vacancies VTiact as active sites for the protonation of subsurface carbon ā¦

In this study, experimental characterization and reactive molecular dynamics simulations were integrated to reveal the effects of NaCl on the early hydration of tricalcium silicate (C3S). The results demonstrate that NaCl significantly accelerates the early hydration of C3S by promoting Ca dissolution and silicate tetrahedra polymerization. Specifically, Clāions coordinate with surface Ca, weakening the CaāO bonds in C3S and reducing the energy barrier for Ca dissolution. Meanwhile, Na+ions compete with Ca2+for the O atoms, creating localized charge imbalance and attracting protons, which destabilize SiāO bonds and facilitate the polymerization of silicate tetrahedra. These effects ā¦

We present the first dataset of collisional (de)-excitation rate coefficients of HCN induced by CO, one of the main perturbing gases in cometary atmospheres. The dataset spans the temperature range of 5ā50 K. It includes both state-to-state rate coefficients involving the lowest ten and nine rotational levels of HCN and CO, respectively, and the so-called "thermalized" rate coefficients over the rotational population of CO at each kinetic temperature. The derivation of these coefficients exploited the good performance of the statistical adiabatic channel model (SACM) on top of an accurate interaction potential computed at the CCSD(T)-F12b/CBS level of theory. The ordered probit model is widely used to make inferences about ordinal dependent variables in the social sciences, while neural network models have proven effective for classification tasks across various domains. Although other scholars have proposed ordinal classification models using neural networks, empirical studies combining ordered probit models with neural networks remain limited. To date, no studies have examined ordered probit models with neural networks under the assumption of heteroskedasticity. Accordingly, this paper demonstrates the predictive performance of an ordered probit model with an artificial neural network (OPANN) using different activation functions. In addition, it introduces a newly developed heteroskedastic ā¦

The molecular-level organization of 1H-1,2,3-triazole in the liquid state is described as an extended hydrogen-bonded network, reminiscent of linear solution-phase polymer chains. Raman, IR, and no-D NMR spectroscopic data interpreted using density functional theory (DFT) computations reveal no evidence of the lower-energy 2H- tautomer or isolated 1H- monomers. Spectroscopic and computational results are consistent with an extended network of strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds throughout the pure liquid and explain earlier X-ray and solution-phase studies. Our computations indicate that the Gibbs free energy of ring-like structures for the most part increases with the number of fragments whereas it decreases for extended ā¦

Hyperpolarization techniques such as dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP), and parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) enhance the sensitivity of NMR spectroscopy and MRI, but the associated antiphase magnetization patterns often relax faster than those of conventional in-phase signals. This study analyzes the spinālattice relaxation matrix for single-quantum transitions in an isolated, weakly coupled two-spin AX system to identify eigenvectors and eigenvalues that govern the time evolution of in-phase and antiphase longitudinal magnetization. The analysis predicts that AX antiphase magnetization, such as that generated by PHIP hydrogenations in high magnetic field, can relax up to twice as fast ā¦

This article suggests that two Linear B signs (69, *47) denote āunion,ā specifically the ancient Egyptian āUnion of Two Lands,ā i.e., North and South Egypt. The Egyptian term for this union is sema-taui (from sema āunionā, ta ālandā; -ui ādual; taui ātwo lands'), and the earlier suggestion that sign 69 derives from a picture of a leaf should perhaps be reconsidered in favor of the Egyptian sema-tawy symbol. Also, on a very speculative note I suggest that the Linear B pronunciation of sign 69 as /tu/ may derive from the /t/ and /u/ sounds of taui ātwo lands.ā

This paper addresses the computationally challenging function-container-virtual machine (VM) scheduling problem, especially under stringent deadline constraints. We propose a two-stage holistic scheduling framework called DCRDA targeting deadline-constrained function scheduling. In the first stage, the function-to-container scheduling is modeled as a one-to-one matching game and solved using the classical Deferred Acceptance Algorithm (DAA). The second stage addresses the container-to-VM assignment, modeled as a many-to-one matching problem, and solved using a variant of the DAA, the Revised-Deferred Acceptance Algorithm (RDA), to account for ā¦

Key parameters such as injection pressure, water breakthrough pressure, and residual resistance factor were measured to evaluate HT-PPG performance. The gel exhibited strong injectability, entering granite fractures at pressure gradients as low as 0.656 MPa/m; HT-PPG yields a superior sealing performance by significantly reducing the permeability; and dehydration occurs during HT-PPG propagation, with a dehydration ratio ranging from 4.71% to 11.36%. Assessing the geologic conditions of levee foundation soils is a challenging task owing to the extensive length of most levees and the heterogeneity of many alluvial deposits. Traditional investigation techniques (such as boring and cone penetrometer testing [CPT]) are expensive, invasive, and provide spatially-limited information. As a result, they are restricted to pre-identified problematic zones in the levee. To overcome these challenges, geophysical instruments capable of better spatial coverage are proposed for rapid geoelectrical characterization of levees. In this study, we presented a field-based application of the towed time-domain electromagnetic method (tTEM) system in characterizing the subsurface geology adjacent to ā¦

HaynesĀ® 233 is a newly developed nickel-based superalloy currently in the early stages of commercial adoption. With the growing interest in fabricating large and complex components using wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), this alloy presents a promising option for industrial applications. This study investigates the microstructure, tensile, and fatigue properties of heat-treated (HT) WAAM Haynes Ā® 233 and compares them to its wrought counterpart. Yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and fatigue strength of WAAM Haynes Ā® 233 are 709.4 MPa, 890.1 MPa, and 253.8 MPa, respectively. These values indicate a 63.8 % increase in YS, a 1.11 % decrease ā¦
