Mathematics educators often face the challenge of students disliking mathematics or experiencing a negative relationship with the subject. Intentional teaching practices can be a mechanism to mitigate this challenge; thus, preservice and novice teachers would benefit from opportunities to develop such teaching practices. This research explored the potential of rough draft math (RDM) to support teachers in addressing these issues. RDM is a pedagogical approach where students discuss and share their preliminary mathematical ideas without the fear of being wrong. This study makes use of a data set detailing instances of public school superintendent turnover in the commonwealth of Kentucky between 2014 and 2023. A quantitative research design was used to analyze descriptive statistics and salary changes based on a set of demographic and descriptive variables in the sample of 205 superintendent turnovers occurring during the identified decade. The research demonstrates that superintendent turnover in Appalachian and non-Appalachian school districts is proportionally consistent. Within the Appalachian region of Kentucky, the analysis reveals that salaries for superintendents hired during the study period were lower than the salaries paid to their predecessors, …

Both superintendents and principals create a foundation for student achievement, school culture, and the vision of a school building or district. When combined, these two similar yet distinct administrative roles become one unique position with less time and resources to fulfill individual job responsibilities. A dual-role administrator is defined as an individual serving as a superintendent and principal simultaneously. Using a comparative case design, rural dual-role administrators’ roles, responsibilities, and experiences are explored. By interviewing and observing two rural practitioners and reviewing public documents, an in-depth investigation of the cases developed. The use of program quality indicators (QIs) for teaching students with an intellectual disability (ID) is essential in meeting student needs and accessing curriculum. Principals who oversee and evaluate teachers of students with ID play a critical role in the implementation of QIs. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to investigate rural school district principals’ perceptions of the importance, teacher implementation, and principal ability to provide feedback on QIs for students with ID. Results indicate differences between principal perception of importance of indicators and reported confidence in ability to provide feedback on indicators. This systematic literature review focuses on the experiences of rural Black men attending four-year colleges and universities within the US. The review addresses three research questions: How is rurality defined within the literature reviewed? What characteristics (e.g., identity dimensions) are included within the literature? What does the available research say about the experiences of rural Black students, mainly rural Black men, specific to factors explored and identified to foster success? These research questions were answered by reviewing literature published in academic journals from 2002–2023. Extending and challenging existing research about LGBTQIA+ life in rural educational contexts, this ethnographically informed qualitative study describes how Lulu—a white, cisgender, queer secondary English language arts teacher in a rural, public school in the Midwest—discursively constructed the functions of her humor with respect to teaching, queerness, and their interrelations. Drawing on social theorizations of humor, particularly queer theorizations of humor, this article argues that Lulu described her humor as having three functions: building relationships, facilitating learning, and opening possibilities for queerness. In this article, we discuss the teaching of Indigenous land sovereignty, history, and culture, commonly referred to as Act 31, in the School District of Bayfield in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Since the legislative mandate in 1991, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has strongly recommended that Wisconsin students receive instruction related to Act 31 twice in elementary school and once in high school. However, because Act 31 is not strictly enforced, there is uneven implementation throughout the state. At the School District of Bayfield, teaching Act 31 is mainstreamed in the curriculum. This article, which combines research with lived experience, discusses how youth entrepreneurship education stands as a promising pedagogy in rural contexts. The author situates the research by sharing experiences teaching in rural schools at a time of declining enrollment and rampant outmigration. The article then explores educational pathways, through entrepreneurship education, that rural educators may follow to contribute to the cause of rural sustainability. Entrepreneurialism is positioned as a useful set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that rural youth can use to better dictate the terms of their future, and schools are envisioned as entrepreneurship incubators.

Pesticide Runoff From Conventional, Minimum, And No-Tillage Cropping Systems: Meta-Analysis Of Published North American Data, Daniel Fleming, Dave Spencer, Chicot Irrigation

Pesticide applications may soon be regulated by laws predicated on the presupposition that reducing tillage, and thereby increasing soil surface crop residue cover, decreases sorbed and soluble agrochemical losses in surface runoff and erosion. This analysis was conducted to determine whether pesticide transport via surface runoff and erosion could be manipulated by tillage practices. Estimates of the amounts of crop residue cover within each tillage practice were averaged from data reported in the original articles. Response ratios of the paired means of runoff, erosion, and pesticide losses and concentrations from the effects of tillage practices were meta-analyzed as paired t-tests …

In this article, we share an escape room activity designed to prompt students to apply critical thinking, employ mathematical reasoning, and utilize problem-solving skills as they navigate through the narrative. Our analysis of students’ verbal and written feedback revealed that the escape room enhanced their grasp of essential set theory principles—a cornerstone of mathematics with significant implications in data science. We designed the escape room to equip students with the foundational knowledge and skills that are essential for success in advanced statistics courses. We aspire to inspire educators to integrate escape rooms and technology into their teaching methodologies!

Providing opportunities for civic learning and democratic engagement has been central to the community college mission for over 100 years. This report presents findings from the 2024 AmeriCorps Civic Engagement among Community Colleges Project (ACECCP) survey, highlighting the ways and extent to which community colleges demonstrate an intentional commitment to civic and community engagement, illustrating how they incorporate this intentionality into curricular and co-curricular structures, and identifying the barriers and challenges that may preclude some colleges from engaging more fully in their civic mission. This research focuses on identifying the key predictors of mastitis and ketosis in dairy cattle, two common and costly diseases affecting milk production and animal health. The primary objective was to identify significant risk factors and evaluate the predictive performance of modeling approaches.

To analyze these complex relationships, a longitudinal dataset following a large sample of dairy cattle is studying using several advanced methods. Survival analysis techniques, like Kaplan-Meier estimations, help measure how long cows remain free from health issues. The Cox Proportional Hazards (CPH) model complements this approach by identifying risk factors associated with health-related events over time. These …

This study aimed to develop hardware and software for an object detection fusion system, using three different sensors. The system was built and studied with the motivating application of autonomous drones searching for and detecting people in a search-and-rescue scenario. The system’s performance was compared to that of individual sensors deployed for the same task. We present a dataset for the autonomous identification of invasive aquatic plant species using deep learning techniques. The dataset includes high-resolution images captured using a Canon EOS REBEL T3 DSLR camera for model training and low-resolution images captured with a Raspberry Pi camera for evaluating model performance under real-world conditions. Eight invasive aquatic plant species: Alternanthera philoxeroides, Cyperus blepharoleptos, Salvinia molesta, Ludwigia peploides, Panicum repens, Pontederia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Nymphaea odorata were cultivated in mesocosms at the R.R. As the United States grappled with the fallout of the September 11th terrorist attacks, another, subtler conundrum was arising. As Mohsin Hamid writes in The Reluctant Fundamentalist, a chasm of difference arose between the First World and the Third. In Derridian terms, the United States grew to center itself, forming its own complete national identity that defied the Third World's cultural realm. In his writing, Hamid viciously attacks this deepening realm of cultural difference by taking aim at the violent domineering and heteronormative American culture whose imposition in the Middle East served to severe any ties between the two cultures. …

Abiotic and biotic forest disturbances can have many impacts to forest ecosystem services, including to forest water use. Studies on impacts to forest evapotranspiration have been conducted on the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) in western North America, but not on the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis), which is a native pest of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata), in the southeastern United States. Stressed pine trees produce pheromones that attract southern pine beetles and, with enough stressed trees, beetle populations can quickly grow to epidemic levels and attack healthy trees, which results in widespread tree mortality. …

Short-term cold storage of amphibian sperm is a valuable technique for overcoming challenges associated with asynchronous gamete release during breeding events or for transferring sperm between institutions for genetic management. Unfortunately, sperm longevity declines over time even when kept cool. Maintaining sperm form and function is critical to achieving the highest possible fertilization rates. Thus, cold storage of amphibian sperm would benefit from the addition of compounds that could extend their quality, improve fertilization and result in more offspring.
