“Knowledge Puffs Up”: The Evangelical Culture Of Anti—Intellectualism As A Local Strategy, Mark Ward Sr. Apr 2020

“Knowledge Puffs Up”: The Evangelical Culture Of Anti—Intellectualism As A Local Strategy, Mark Ward Sr.

Sermon Studies

The anti-intellectual strain of American evangelicalism, rooted in the populist Great Awakenings of the 18th and 19th centuries, has prompted much commentary from the 20th century to the present. Analysis of this anti-intellectualism has gained new currency today as evangelicals, who comprise 1 in 4 Americans, reject theories of evolution and manmade climate change. Scholarship on the subject has focused on the discourses of evangelical leaders at the national level. The present study, based on three years of fieldwork at an evangelical church, finds that an animus against intellectual elites is a potent "local strategy" for constructing a satisfying evangelical …

Recycling A Colonial Puritan Sermon: A Case Study, David M. Powers Oct 2019

Recycling A Colonial Puritan Sermon: A Case Study, David M. Powers

Sermon Studies

Notes which the teenager John Pynchon took in the 1640s as he listened to the Rev. George Moxon’s sermons in frontier Springfield, MA, have become the inspiration and the ingredients for sermon performances in 21st century New England. The project began with a word-for-word transcription of a symbol-for-symbol manuscript based on a code invented by Pynchon. Then a very few words which the notetaker skipped, in his rush to record just what he heard, were added to provide essential clarification. So, too, was introductory material to frame the experience by encouraging the listening congregation to “stretch” a bit to appreciate …

Feminism And Mythology: Hiratsuka Raicho And Japanese Feminism, Edris Akers

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

In the early 1900s of Japan, Hiratsuka Raicho started a journal called Bluestocking. In its early years, it focused on women’s literature. Soon after, the focus of the journal shifted to women’s issues. In one of the first issues, Raicho made reference to Japan’s creation myths in an attempt to stress the suppression of women’s rights in Japan. Raicho’s dialog regarding women’s reproductive health stirred innumerable conversations within the community. Through her poetry she made clear her own feelings on women’s rights of the time period. I will introduce the ode to mythology in feminism in Japan in the …

What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha Apr 2019

What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

The word “frontier” brings to mind certain connotations. The American public might think of Davy Crockett and his trademark coonskin cap, or of what came to be known as the Indian Wars as Americans pushed farther and farther west, conquering the rivers, plains, and mountains that lay just beyond colonial reach. But what was a frontier fort really like at the turn of the 19th Century? This paper explores that question through the study of archaeological artifacts left behind by the inhabitants of Fort Steuben. The fort, constructed in 1787, in what is now Steubenville, Ohio, was home to early …

Implementation Of Curbside Recycling, Samantha Kelley Apr 2019

Implementation Of Curbside Recycling, Samantha Kelley

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

My project is on the program of curbside recycling in Huntington, WV. Recycling came into play around the 1970s when reduce reuse recycle was introduced, since then many laws and implements have been created, some successful, and others not so much. There is a lot of research on recycling and some on curbside recycling but not much on the process of what it takes to implement the program. There have been bans that do not allow our recyclables to go where it once went, many questions to if it even gets recycled, and the education of how to recycle. In …

Stigmatized Suspicion: The Who, What, And Why Of Political Conspiracy Theory, Katie Tennant Apr 2019

Stigmatized Suspicion: The Who, What, And Why Of Political Conspiracy Theory, Katie Tennant

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Political conspiracy theories have been ingrained in American culture since the country’s birth. People have long distrusted government, central authority, and other institutional bodies of power. This capstone research project examines this long-standing distrust in relation to conspiracy theories and the social implications intertwined with such “uncommon” beliefs. This study is conducted through one-on-one interviews with students enrolled in a political conspiracies course at Marshall University, a group containing both believers and non-believers. An additional method of the study is a Qualtrics survey available to all enrolled students of Marshall University. The combination of interviews and survey responses will aid …
