Improving Policing: Criticisms And Supports, Hannah M. Stephens May 2021

Improving Policing: Criticisms And Supports, Hannah M. Stephens

The Mid-Southern Journal of Criminal Justice

In today's society, there are many critical factors surrounding the profession of law enforcement. In the midst of allegations such as corruption, racism, and use of force, policing has lost its favor in the eyes of the public. By taking a closer look at these issues and the various ways of correcting their problems, perhaps true policing can once again be a source of effectiveness and pride in our criminal justice system. Traditional policing holds many values that have been lost. If our justice system and the public's trust in it is to be restored, education, various approaches to crime, …

Examining Cyberstalking Victimization Using Routine Activities And Lifestyle-Routine Activities Theories: A Critical Literature Review, Katie J. Nutter May 2021

Examining Cyberstalking Victimization Using Routine Activities And Lifestyle-Routine Activities Theories: A Critical Literature Review, Katie J. Nutter

The Mid-Southern Journal of Criminal Justice

Lifestyle and routine activities models are often used in criminological research to examine crime victimization. Routine activities and lifestyle-routine activities theories both propose crime occurs when there is a physical convergence of time and space between a motivated offender and a suitable target, with the absence of a capable guardian. However, crimes committed in cyberspace are without the proposed physical interaction. Due to the emergence of the Internet, stalking victimization has been rapidly occurring in the realm of cyberspace, which is a disorganized environment for crime to occur. In this critical literature review, a review of pertinent research will be …

Understanding The Influence Of Childhood Experiences On The Development Of Female Sexual Perpetrators Against Underage Individuals, Cassandra Marie Hershman Jan 2021

Understanding The Influence Of Childhood Experiences On The Development Of Female Sexual Perpetrators Against Underage Individuals, Cassandra Marie Hershman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Females who are perpetrators of sexual offenses are an understudied population. Due to societies’ failure to recognize that female perpetrators exist and to recognize their abuse when it occurs, sexual abuse completed by females often goes unreported. As a result, females engaging in sexual offenses, particularly pedophilia, is seen as a rare occurrence. However, research suggests that the actual rate of female pedophilic behavior is occurring at a rate three-four times higher than what is actually reported (Cortoni, Babchishin, & Rat, 2017). This study used anonymous data from 2,828 adult females in the IRB approved study [127810-11] Effects of Recalled …

The Crusader From Pittsburgh: Michael Musmanno And The Sacco/Vanzetti Case, Richard P. Mulcahy Dr.

ASA Annual Conference

It is a truism to say that this nation is polarized along ideological lines, with each side retreating into their respective echo chambers, interested only in their version of the truth. Argument ceases in this environment, as each side proclaims its own specific narrative with its own set of facts. While this is unsettling and has been exacerbated by an explosion of media outlets and platforms, this phenomenon is nothing new in our national experience. Other issues have divided America in the past and divided her bitterly. Good cases in point include racial issues, ranging from slavery to civil rights, …

Narratives Of Displacement: Reconsidering Race And Archaeological Research In The Virginia Blue Ridge, Audrey Horning Jul 2020

Narratives Of Displacement: Reconsidering Race And Archaeological Research In The Virginia Blue Ridge, Audrey Horning

ASA Annual Conference

In the 1930s, Shenandoah National Park was established in the Virginia Blue Ridge through the displacement of nearly five hundred Euro-American families. At the time, hackneyed stereotypes about backward mountaineers were mobilized to garner public support for the condemnation of family farms and the institutionalization and sterilization of some of the most impoverished residents. The anger felt by the displaced and now their descendants has barely abated. That said, in the 1990s, a park service-sponsored archaeological project that I directed helped to overturn the prevailing narrative and transform park interpretation. While I am proud of that work, what I want …

Plant Power For The People: Agriculture As Just Transition In Appalachia, Shaunna Scott Jun 2020

Plant Power For The People: Agriculture As Just Transition In Appalachia, Shaunna Scott

ASA Annual Conference

Agriculture, deforestation, and land usage contribute to one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. One of the best things we can do in using our capital to fight against climate change is support local sustainable agriculture. In promoting a just transition for Appalachia, we must support the growth of alternative agricultural initiatives. This will lead to sustainable jobs, local access to increased resources, socioeconomic growth, and provide an ecological benefit to an area experiencing critical need for these changes. In this way we can change the “resource curse” into a dirty blessing.

"Stories about the Quest for a Just Transition in …
