Do You See Yourself? The Effects Of Cultural Binaries Within Fantasy Young Adult Literature, Serena Holcomb Apr 2019

Do You See Yourself? The Effects Of Cultural Binaries Within Fantasy Young Adult Literature, Serena Holcomb

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Teenage years are critical for identity formation. Young adult literature is a form in which teenagers use to help form identities through relating with characters and situations. It is important to have literature available to teenagers that is relatable to a wide audience so that all young adults can find novels that they feel represented by. This study will be looking into the cultural binaries that could limit representation in fantasy young adult literature, such as white/other, abled/disabled, female/male. In this way, people can be aware of what is hindering or enabling, depending on our results, wide representation of different …

Queering Relationships, Ian Clark Apr 2019

Queering Relationships, Ian Clark

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

More research exists on LGBTQ+ populations than ever before, and research has been done on people in polyamorous relationships, but very little research exists on LGBTQ+ people and the way their sexuality/ gender identities influence their relationship dynamics (if they do at all). The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a link between sexuality and gender identity and an individual’s likelihood to pursue non-monogamous or polyamorous relationship dynamics. Participants were recruited through word of mouth and from online forums. The participants fully consented either online or in person for the survey or interview process, respectively. The …

Adhd: Review Of Literature On The Current Direction Of Interventions, Tiffani Brewster

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

This literature review examines the application and effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications on school-age children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is a brain disorder recognized by patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. CBT is a psychosocial intervention used to treat many mental health conditions by focusing on coping mechanisms and emotional regulation, while medications target specific parts of the brain specifically. In 2015, a study by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that a number of their participants were successfully able to manage their ADHD skills with …

ASA Annual Conference

This session will describe a fight led by local, largely blue-collar citizens of a town outside of Asheville against a well-funded and politically powerful developer’s proposal to build a 21-unit housing scheme on a three-acre plot bordering a community park heavily used by economically and culturally diverse groups. The paper will focus on changes of participant perceptions of self and of treatment by officials over the course of the controversy.

Substituting Open Educational Resources For Commercial Curriculum Materials: Effects On Student Mathematics Achievement In Elementary Schools, John Hilton Iii, Ross Larsen, David Wiley, Lane Fischer Mar 2019

Substituting Open Educational Resources For Commercial Curriculum Materials: Effects On Student Mathematics Achievement In Elementary Schools, John Hilton Iii, Ross Larsen, David Wiley, Lane Fischer

Entrepreneurship Faculty Research

Open Educational Resources (OER) have the potential to replace commercial learning materials in education. An empirical examination of this potential was conducted, comparing the end-of-year mathematics test results of 12,110 elementary school students clustered within 95 schools from five school districts in the state of Washington in the United States of America. Of this group, 6796 students used open learning materials, and 5314 used commercial educational resources. When three years of test scores were considered, there were no statistically significant differences in the exam scores of students who used open versus commercial curriculum materials. The lack of statistical significance may …

The Perceptions And Effects Of Schools' Names On Black Professional Educators And Their Students, Gregg Suzanne Ferguson Jan 2019

The Perceptions And Effects Of Schools' Names On Black Professional Educators And Their Students, Gregg Suzanne Ferguson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

It is obvious that there is a variety of perspectives that the educational environment needs to sensitively reflect to serve a diverse society equitably. In Southern communities, in particular, distortions of heritage are conflated with local governance that control public money, public memory, public value, public health, and public landscape, including the public school environment and marginalizes further historically marginalized groups. This qualitative study was grounded in critical race and cultural geography theories that examined dominant paradigms in the educational environment which shape identity. This dissertation explored the effect(s) of race and racism in the educational environment from the perspective …

Data were collected by a researcher created, online survey consisting …

Re-Vision And Re-Representation : An Exploration Of Awarness And Voice In Marxism, Postcolonialism, Postmodernism And Psychoanalytic Theory, Stacy Sexton Jan 2019

Re-Vision And Re-Representation : An Exploration Of Awarness And Voice In Marxism, Postcolonialism, Postmodernism And Psychoanalytic Theory, Stacy Sexton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Awareness and voice are explored through case studies of Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. Karl Marx’s unaware and voiceless lumpenproletariat, Gayatri Spivak’s possibly aware but voiceless subaltern, and Saul Williams’ losers are compared. Williams’ loser may or may not have access to and engage in re-vision and re-representation, since the loser may exist at any point along the continuum of awareness and voice. Capitalism and the superstructure make everyone a loser. Thus, there is an inherent solidarity among losers, and it is this solidarity that may bring re-vision and re-representation to those who are unaware and voiceless. Unlike the …

The Impact Of Intervention Measures On Sexual Harassment In The Film And Television Industry, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao Jan 2019

The Impact Of Intervention Measures On Sexual Harassment In The Film And Television Industry, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao

Management Faculty Research

Since 2017, increased sexual harassment incidents have been reported in Hollywood; yet, little guidance has been offered on how organizations, which are informally governed by their network members, can effectively reduce sexual harassment. Building upon the theory of network governance, this paper suggests social mechanisms, which are used to coordinate and safeguard exchanges between Hollywood organizations, are more effective at reducing incidents of workplace sexual harassment than traditional strategies. These social mechanisms direct change to the macroculture through collective sanctions that damage the perpetrators reputation and restrict access to network opportunities. In essence, perpetrators become toxic assets that Hollywood avoids …

Deep Disagreement And The Virtues Of Argumentative And Epistemic Incapacity, Jeremy Barris Sep 2018

Deep Disagreement And The Virtues Of Argumentative And Epistemic Incapacity, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

Fogelin’s (1985) Wittgensteinian view of deep disagreement as allowing no rational resolution has been criticized from both argumentation theoretic and epistemological perspectives. These criticisms typically do not recognize how his point applies to the very argumentative resources on which they rely. Additionally, more extremely than Fogelin himself argues, the conditions of deep disagreement make each position literally unintelligible to the other, again disallowing rational resolution. In turn, however, this failure of sense is so extreme that it partly cancels its own meaning as a failure of sense. Consequently, it paradoxically opens new possibilities for sense and therefore rationally unexpected resolutions.

Attitudinal, Normative, And Resource Factors Affecting Psychologists’ Intentions To Adopt An Open Data Badge: An Empirical Analysis, Lindsey M. Harper, Youngseek Kim

Librarian Research

The purpose of this research is to investigate the attitudinal, normative, and resource factors affecting psychologists’ adoption of an open data badge. The theory of planned behavior was employed to demonstrate how these factors influence behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge. This research used a survey method to examine to what extent those attitudinal, normative, resource factors influence psychologists’ behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge, and therefore engage in data sharing behaviors. A national survey (n = 341) across the field of psychology showed that perceived benefit and perceived risk had significant positive and negative relationships …
