Feminist Ecclesiology: A Trinitarian Framework For Transforming The Church's Institutional And Spiritual Life, Stacy Geere
Feminist Ecclesiology: A Trinitarian Framework For Transforming The Church's Institutional And Spiritual Life, Stacy Geere
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In light of women’s marginal status in church governance and ministry through most of recorded history, feminist trinitarian ecclesiology is needed to transform the church’s institutional and spiritual life. While Vatican II provided the paradigm shift and promising anthropology essential for an egalitarian church, feminist ecclesiology prompts a radical transformation of its hierarchical and patriarchal structures and practices so that it may truly embody the Trinity. Trinitarian life provides practical and radical consequences for Christian life, and provides a model of church marked by relationships of equality, mutuality, unity and reciprocity. It also provides a strong ecclesiological argument for reform …
Homophobia In Catholic Schools: An Exploration Of Teachers’ Rights And Experiences In Canada And Australia, Tonya D. Callaghan, Lisa Van Leent
Homophobia In Catholic Schools: An Exploration Of Teachers’ Rights And Experiences In Canada And Australia, Tonya D. Callaghan, Lisa Van Leent
Journal of Catholic Education
Little is known about the experiences of non-heterosexual educators in Catholic schools. This international comparative analysis reveals previously unreported data from Australian and Canadian qualitative studies that examine the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) teachers, and LGBTI Allies from Australia and Canada who are currently teaching or have taught in Catholic schools. Bringing their work together for the first time, the two lead researchers compare their investigations and reveal disheartening similarities with religiously inspired homophobia despite differing legal and policy contexts of the two countries. These two studies reveal that LGBTI teachers, and LGBTI Allies, rely …
Another Ignatian History: Including Women In The Story Of Jesuit Mission, Julia A. Dowd
Another Ignatian History: Including Women In The Story Of Jesuit Mission, Julia A. Dowd
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Orientation programs at Jesuit universities often include a review of the life of Ignatius. What is missing from the official history of Ignatius are the stories of the women with whom he lived and worked who contributed financially, politically, and emotionally to Ignatius’ formation and that of the early Jesuits. What is also missing is a critical feminist analysis of the historical context out of which Ignatius, the Spiritual Exercises and the Society of Jesus were born. In this article, I argue that women provided essential scaffolding to bolster Ignatius’ identity and vocation, and likewise to contribute to the early …
Pastoral Care, Mission, Tradition And Community: Alumnae Perceptions Of A Catholic Female Single-Sex High School, Samuel Torres
Pastoral Care, Mission, Tradition And Community: Alumnae Perceptions Of A Catholic Female Single-Sex High School, Samuel Torres
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study examined the experiences of Saint Mary’s High School alumnae from the freshman class of 1949 through the graduating class of 2010 in order to identify what has sustained the school over the decades. Years after graduation, alumnae held memories of their school experiences that resulted in personal and long-lasting qualities that continue to have significant impacts on individuals and the institution. Data was gathered through written journals and interviews. The Appreciative Inquiry (AI) model was used to analyze the context of alumnae experiences. Using the AI model, multiple categories arose as positive notables mentioned by the participants. …

The Characteristics Of Catholic Schools: Comparative Perspectives From The Usa And Queensland, Australia, Jim Gleeson, John O'Gorman, Peta Goldburg, Maureen M. O'Neill
The Characteristics Of Catholic Schools: Comparative Perspectives From The Usa And Queensland, Australia, Jim Gleeson, John O'Gorman, Peta Goldburg, Maureen M. O'Neill
Journal of Catholic Education
The faith-based identity of Catholic schools is increasingly problematic in a secularised society where the numbers of teachers belonging to religious orders are diminishing rapidly. Teachers’ views regarding the characteristics of Catholic schools are an important aspect of the identity of such schools. The authors locate Catholic schools in the USA and Queensland, Australia, in their respective contexts and compare teachers’ ratings of the importance of eleven given characteristics of Catholic schools as seen by 3,389 teachers in USA Catholic schools and 2,287 teachers in Queensland Catholic schools. When the mean ratings for each jurisdiction were statistically correlated, USA teachers …

The Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm: A Means To Discernment Of Faith And Values In A Spanish Language And Literature Curriculum, Ángeles González-Aller, Kim Hernández
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
The language classroom may not commonly be considered a site for inquiry into faith and values, but a pedagogy that combines foreign language study and values inquiry can offer students effective language acquisition and a step along the path toward individual moral formation. This article examines an approach to teaching language and literature that is framed by the Ignatian pedagogical paradigm, a learning method drawn from the Jesuit approach to education. Professors from a Christian liberal arts university describe how they use the Ignatian pedagogical paradigm in a two-semester, third-year Spanish language curriculum as a framework to guide the encounter …

Preparing Priests To Work With Catholic Schools: A Content Analysis Of Seminary Curricula, Michael J. Boyle, Anthony Dosen, Cm
Journal of Catholic Education
This documentary study of academic programs at Catholic Seminaries and Theology Schools through the United States sought to answer the question: “What types of preparation does the seminary curriculum provide to new pastors about their role in the parish’s Catholic School?” Results of program syllabi review show a dearth of preparation given to this aspect of this parochial ministry. Recommendations for further investigation are offered.

Forming Catholic School Principals As Leaders Of The New Evangelization, David D. Spesia
Forming Catholic School Principals As Leaders Of The New Evangelization, David D. Spesia
Journal of Catholic Education
Pope Francis’ call for a missionary transformation of the Church has radical implications for Catholic schools and their educational leaders. The Church expects her elementary school principals to serve not only as instructional leaders and ecclesial ministers, but also as agents of the New Evangelization. Given this focus on the New Evangelization as a fundamental conceptual framework for the mission of Catholic schools, it is essential to understand the roots and foundations of this vision as it pertains to the unique role played by Catholic school principals. This article also highlights insights from leading Catholic evangelizers and concludes with recommendations …

A Case Study Examining The Implementation And Assessment Of The Profile Of The Graduate At Graduation In A Jesuit Secondary School, Daniel Joseph O'Connell
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In 2000 Campion High School, a Catholic, Jesuit, single-sex secondary school created and adopted the Grad-at-Grad statement as the school‘s expected school-wide learning results (ESLRs) and has articulated a need for a comprehensive, reliable assessment of these graduation outcomes. This case study used interviews, a survey, and participant observation to understand how the school has implemented and assessed the ESLRs since their inception. The study also thematically compared Jesuit educational philosophy to current theories of educative assessment and outcomes-centered curriculum development. Findings reveal that the school relies on a random, individual approach to curricular incorporation and has not incorporated the …

Holding Space: A Reflection About Teaching A Class On Forgiveness, Anna H. L. Floyd
Holding Space: A Reflection About Teaching A Class On Forgiveness, Anna H. L. Floyd
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
“Forgiving Others, Forgiving Ourselves” is a course offered at Regis University in the College of Contemporary Liberal Studies. The course covers content related to the nature of forgiveness, different theoretical lenses through which to view forgiveness, health and forgiveness, barriers to forgiveness, interpersonal boundaries, steps and phases of forgiveness, and communication skills around apology and reconciliation. The nature of forgiveness itself and the fact that students arrive to class with their own histories of both harming others and being harmed themselves necessitate that professors facilitating a class on forgiveness move flexibly to hold space for students. This article defines the …
Speak English, Pray In Spanish: Forming Cultural Bridges Between Hispanic Teens And Parents, Dulce Flores
Speak English, Pray In Spanish: Forming Cultural Bridges Between Hispanic Teens And Parents, Dulce Flores
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Within Hispanic families there is a growing gap – a disconnection between Hispanic immigrants and their U.S. born and raised children. The cultural gap formed between these two groups has caused many U.S. Hispanic teens to disconnect from “Catholic” as a marker of identity. In order to help Hispanic teens establish a Catholic identity, the local church community needs to help families bridge the gap between teens, parents, and the Church itself. Through the exploration of mestizaje and the incorporation of lo cotidiano and accompaniment in catequesis familiar, parents in conjunction with the Church community can help engage teens in …
Student Leadership Development: A Functional Framework, Gregory Stephen Colin Hine
Student Leadership Development: A Functional Framework, Gregory Stephen Colin Hine
Journal of Catholic Education
This article presents a longitudinal, qualitative case study of a student leadership program in a Catholic secondary school in Perth, Western Australia. Data were collected over a period of three years through multiple methods, including one-on-one interviewing, focus group interviewing, document searches, field notes, and researcher reflective journaling. Through the analysis of the longitudinal data, key characteristics of seven models of leadership presented in the literature—transactional leadership, transformational leadership, charismatic leadership, servant leadership, distributed leadership, Christian leadership, and student leadership—are compared with those found in the leadership program of the school. This article contributes to the growing body of school-based …
Aquinas On Inclusion: Using The Good Doctor And Catholic Social Teaching To Build A Moral Case For Inclusion In Catholic Schools For Children With Special Needs, Mary Carlson
Journal of Catholic Education
This article discusses the present status of students with disabilities in Catholic schools. It then builds the case, based upon the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas and Catholic Social Teaching, that Catholic Schools, to remain true to Church teachings, must offer special educational services. The article concludes with recommendations for research and practice related to inclusion in Catholic schools.

Spirituality, Creativity, Identity, And Art Therapy, Theresa Crooks
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This research explores the question: how does an art therapist’s understanding of God as Creator form his/her identity and inform his/her clinical practice? A review was done in the art therapy, spirituality and psychology integration, and creation theology literature to look at existing research that answers this question. A lack of information in the art therapy literature prompted the development of this study to respond to this inquiry. This involved gathering data from LMU MFT graduates who expressed in a survey that they were willing to participate in this study. Four graduates were able to attend an art workshop to …
Envisioning Queer Culture: Toward A Theological Framework For Reimagining Sexuality And Sexual Orientation, Danielle Dempsey
Envisioning Queer Culture: Toward A Theological Framework For Reimagining Sexuality And Sexual Orientation, Danielle Dempsey
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I argue that the both the Church and the Queer Community will benefit from a reexamination of Church teachings on sexuality. I argue that Church’s current position on sexuality does not uphold its own teaching on the importance human dignity, because a sexual ethic that opposes homosexuality contributes to the marginalization of members of the Queer Community. I then argue that Michael Lawler’s and Todd Salzman’s The Sexual Person: Toward a Renewed Catholic Anthropology provides a revisionist theory on sexual ethics that is inclusive of same-sex couples while also paying deference to the fundamental elements of the …
The Call To Love: A Catholic’S Guide To New Understandings Of Homosexual Inclusivity, Eddie-Joe Vieyra
The Call To Love: A Catholic’S Guide To New Understandings Of Homosexual Inclusivity, Eddie-Joe Vieyra
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The issue of homosexual inclusivity within the Catholic Church has been and continues to be at the center of much debate. This thesis analyzes the issue by engaging the document ,“The Pastoral Care of the Homosexual Person” written by Joseph Ratzinger. New exegetical interpretations of both Old and New Testament texts are placed in dialogue with interpretations utilized by Ratzinger in his letter. These interpretations serve to provide an alternative and liberating reading of seminal texts that have been used to oppress and exclude the Queer community from the Catholic Church. Queer theology is then used to draw connections between …

Fostering Community Through The House System At Most Holy Trinity Catholic School, Michael C. Brennan
Fostering Community Through The House System At Most Holy Trinity Catholic School, Michael C. Brennan
Journal of Catholic Education
More than ever, the challenges facing Catholic schools and Catholic school leaders require a “readiness to renew and adapt” (Vatican Council II, 1965). The skills and dispositions developed through applied action research—inquiry that is systematic, practitioner driven, and change oriented—are integral to the formation of teachers and leaders who will meet these challenges head on and strengthen Catholic schools for generations to come. The following action research project was conducted by a Catholic school leader who is a recent graduate of the Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program at the University of Notre Dame. The article you will read is one …

Hiring School Counselors In Faith-Based Schools, Robert J. Murray
Hiring School Counselors In Faith-Based Schools, Robert J. Murray
Journal of Catholic Education
Although school counseling candidates in faith-based schools may possess an extraordinary résumé, it is essential that their beliefs and behaviors be compatible with the mission and philosophy of the school for which they are interviewing. If hiring practices are not addressed in faith-based schools, these schools run the risk of losing their identity. This article offers a pastoral model for interviewing and hiring Catholic school counselors. It is a model that assists school leaders and those responsible for hiring school counselors in faith-based schools to transform what would otherwise be a functional job into a pastoral ministry, thereby advancing the …
Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Among Catholic-Educated University Graduates, Jonathan D. Callegher
Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Among Catholic-Educated University Graduates, Jonathan D. Callegher
Journal of Catholic Education
Depending on the area of academic concentration, formal education beyond the secondary school level may present Catholic-educated individuals with a steady stream of perspectives, theories, and worldviews on a variety of sociocultural issues, including sexuality, that are different from those of the Catholic Church. Increasingly, liberal attitudes of young Catholics toward gay and lesbian issues may reflect a Catholic cohort that views moral questions as increasingly ambiguous and more open to personal interpretation. The purpose of this study is to uncover the themes related to how the completion of a university social science program and corresponding exposure to perspectives that …
The Problem Of Catholic School Teachers Deferring To The Home On Controversial Religious Issues, Graham P. Mcdonough
The Problem Of Catholic School Teachers Deferring To The Home On Controversial Religious Issues, Graham P. Mcdonough
Journal of Catholic Education
This paper observes that an ironic tension occurs in the discussion of controversial issues in some Catholic schools. One technique that teachers use in response to student disagreement with the official Church view on a controversial issue like contraception, homosexuality, or female ordination is to present Church teaching but then suggest that students follow up at home with their parents for further information. While this technique is promising to some degree, it sits uneasily against the remarks that some Catholic education commentators make regarding deficiencies in the home regarding student formation and socialization in the faith. The discussion acknowledges some …
