Gay And Lesbian Students In Catholic High Schools: A Qualitative Study Of Alumni Narratives, Michael J. Maher Jun 2007

Gay And Lesbian Students In Catholic High Schools: A Qualitative Study Of Alumni Narratives, Michael J. Maher

Journal of Catholic Education

The Catholic Magisterium has made a distinction between homosexual orientation (disordered but not sinful), homosexual activity (sinful, but judged “with prudence”), rights of gay and lesbian people, and the Church’s pastoral responsibilities to gay and lesbian people. Both the Vatican and the American bishops have clearly stated that the topic of homosexuality must be addressed in Catholic education, but the emphases on how it is addressed differ between the Vatican (emphasis on finding causes and cures) and the American bishops (providing pastoral care and inclusion). This article deals with the experiences of gay and lesbian youth in Catholic high schools. …

This paper focuses on a particular aspect of that research in which the career aspirations of those being surveyed, in the pool of potential applicants for principal positions, are analyzed and reported. Implications for the future of Catholic schools in Australia as well as for the future leadership of …

Process Of Compassion: Pastoral Care During School Closings, Patrick J. Mcdevitt, Anthony J. Dosen, Frances Ryan

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic education in the United States continues to face mounting economic challenges. Dioceses are being challenged with the painful reality of closing Catholic schools that have long served communities. These school closings leave behind wounded and disillusioned professionals. The Process of Compassion Workshop was developed to provide personal and professional help for healing so that teachers could move forward in their careers. This article provides a theoretical framework with action research to care for the dedicated people school closings leave behind.

Leadership Role Expectations And Relationships Of Principals And Pastors In Catholic Parochial Elementary Schools: Part I, Duane F. Schafer

Journal of Catholic Education

Parish Elementary schools in the United States have a governance structure that often precipitates conflict. The principal is the designated leader of the school, the educational administrator, and the supervisor of the faculty and students. By canon law, however, the pastor of the parish remains ultimately responsible for the spiritual and temporal welfare of the entire parish. This review addresses the relationship of pastors and principals in parish schools. After a brief review of general governance in the Catholic Church, the review analyzes the roles of pastor and principal respectively, and concludes with some preliminary advice about role expectations.

Catholic High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Homosexuality: A Snapshot Of Incoming College Freshmen, Michael J. Maher

Journal of Catholic Education

This study is a survey of incoming freshmen at a Midwestern Catholic university on their agreement with Church teachings on homosexuality. In general, females had more homo-positive attitudes than males, graduates of Catholic high schools had more homo-positive attitudes than graduates from non-Catholic high schools, and graduates from coeducational Catholic high schools had more homo-positive attitudes than graduates from unisex Catholic high schools. Also, if respondents agreed with the Church’s teaching against homosexual activity and that homosexuality is a disorder, they were less likely to agree with the Church’s teachings that gay and lesbian people have rights that the Church …

Cognitive Spirituality And Hope In Catholic High School Students, Bruce B. Frey, Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti, Lisa M. Edwards, Diane Mcdermott Jun 2004

Cognitive Spirituality And Hope In Catholic High School Students, Bruce B. Frey, Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti, Lisa M. Edwards, Diane Mcdermott

Journal of Catholic Education

This study explores the validity of a construct of cognitive spirituality as measured by a recent measure, the Spirituality Index of Well-Being, in a sample of Catholic high school students. Spirituality on this scale is conceptualized as a composite of life scheme (having meaning in one’s life) and generalized self-efficacy. Construct-based validity evidence was produced through factor analysis and examination of correlations between the spirituality scale and subscale scores with scale and subscales on the Children’s Hope Scale, a well-being indicator previously used for this population. In addition, differences between male and female students were found, with females producing higher …

Building Strategic Leadership And Management Capacity To Improve School Effectiveness, Kelvin Canavan Dec 2003

Building Strategic Leadership And Management Capacity To Improve School Effectiveness, Kelvin Canavan

Journal of Catholic Education

The building of leadership and management capacity with a focus on teaching and learning effectiveness has been a defining characteristic of the Catholic schools in Sydney, Australia, during the past decade. During the 1990s, the leaders of the 150 parish primary and regional secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney adopted a common leadership and management framework that incorporates long-term strategic planning with an annual implementation cycle characterized by a sharp focus on teaching and learning outcomes. Principals and senior staff are involved in an ongoing performance management plan that is linked to the schools’ annual curriculum goals and targets. …

Catholic School Counseling: From Guidance To Pastoral Care, Robert Murray, Kristy Suriano, Judith Madden

Journal of Catholic Education

Those ministering to youth increasingly find themselves having to address numerous issues and complexities, which extend beyond the scope of the school setting. Catholic school students are not immune to these issues, and to address the needs of their students, Catholic school counselors must embrace aspects of the social sciences that affirm and elevate the message of the Gospel. The intent of this article is to present a Christian perspective of guidance counseling and to highlight those orientations and therapies that uphold Christian values.

New Voices In The Tradition: Medieval Hagiography Revisited, Marie Anne Mayeski Jan 2002

New Voices In The Tradition: Medieval Hagiography Revisited, Marie Anne Mayeski

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The author argues for the use of hagiographical texts to expand the evidence for the theological tradition, precisely during the early Middle Ages when more obvious sources are wanting. Her thesis is that there is sound basis for reading the lives of the saints through the lens of doctrinal theology. After giving this evidence, she then exemplifies the value of such a reading by an ecclesiological analysis of Rudolf of Saxony’s life of St. Leoba, a companion of St. Boniface.]

Communicating Identity And The Challenge Of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Anthony J. Dosen Dec 2000

Communicating Identity And The Challenge Of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Anthony J. Dosen

Journal of Catholic Education

Arguing that the current challenge in Catholic higher education to implement the norms of Ex Corde Ecclesiae is largely a conflict of different world views, the author describes three competing visions of Church”pistic, charismatic, and mystical”and offers three “lenses” to clarify each vision: functional, interpretive, and post-modern. A textual analysis of Ex Corde Ecclesiae and the 1993 and 1999 drafts of ordinances of the National Catholic Conference of Bishops (NCCB) reveals a world view at odds with most Catholic universities.

The Catholic School: Avenue To Authenticity, Denis Mclaughlin Mar 2000

The Catholic School: Avenue To Authenticity, Denis Mclaughlin

Journal of Catholic Education

A document from the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education has confirmed that the fundamental purpose of Catholic schools is to create an educational environment promoting authentic humanity. This position has its basis in a Catholic concept of personhood, which underpins the thrust of the 1998 Roman document, The Catholic School on the Threshold of the Third Millennium. This article outlines a philosophical framework for Catholic education and establishes a comprehensive theological foundation for community living. Education, the life of faith, and the common good all come under the rubric of authentic humanity.

The Challenge To Catholic Teacher Education In Scotland, James C. Conroy, Douglas Mccreath

Journal of Catholic Education

Maintaining a strong sense of religious purpose is a challenge facing private education. Institutions of higher learning confront special challenges when addressing issues of religious identity, governance, and mission. Scotland’s Catholic community encountered a major challenge when the only teacher education college for those aspiring to teach in Catholic schools, St. Andrew’s College, began merger talks with the University of Glasgow, an institution with historical ties to the Church of Scotland. After reviewing the historical context of the merger discussions, the authors provide a helpful analysis of the process and offer a four-fold model of analysis for other institutions in …

It relates this historical situation to the following issues facing contemporary Catholic immigrant education: 1) financing local parochial educational programs with nonlocal funds; 2) developing theories regarding transcultural education; and 3) considering education inclusively to incorporate programs beyond parochial schooling.
