Charismatic Communication And Faith Healers: A Critical Study Of Rhetorical Behavior., Todd Vernon Lewis Jan 1980

Charismatic Communication And Faith Healers: A Critical Study Of Rhetorical Behavior., Todd Vernon Lewis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Faith healing evangelists attract devoted followers who perceive these religious leaders as possessors of charisma. Charisma is a concept that is often applied to any leader/communicator whose eloquence, persuasion, transcendence, and personal aura set him or her apart from the average person. In this dissertation charisma is operationally defined, linked to a process of communication, and applied to the rhetorical behavior of three prominent faith healing evangelists: Aimee Semple McPherson (1890-1944), A. A. Allen (1911-1970), and Kathryn Kuhlman (1907-1976). A survey of selected theories of charisma provides elements for a synergistic "charismatic-communication-influence-process-model." The newly formed model amalgamates charisma research from …

Theory And Performance Of Narrative Ambiguity In Selected Novels By John Hawkes., Carole Ellsworth Tallant Jan 1980

Theory And Performance Of Narrative Ambiguity In Selected Novels By John Hawkes., Carole Ellsworth Tallant

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Narrative ambiguity, a concept which has only recently achieved prominence in literary criticism, has important implications for the performance of literature as well. Few studies exist which focus exclusively on narrative ambiguity. Most, instead, discuss the semantic kind. Recently, however, the increase of interest in the narrative form in general has precipitated interest in narrative ambiguity as well. In the field of the performance of literature, however, no one has investigated this phenomenon until now. The purpose of this study was to define and describe narrative ambiguity through an examination and identification of it both in theoretical writings and in …

Part I: Evaluation Of Dipel(Registered Trademark) And Elcar(Registered Trademark) Applications On Early Season Populations Of Heliothis Spp. And Beneficial Arthropods In Cotton. Part Ii: Composition And Seasonal Abundance Of The Arthropod Predator Complex Associated With Cotton Agro-Ecosystems., Charles Talbot Allen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Part I of this dissertation involved the use of the biological insecticides Dipel('(REGTM)), Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, and Elcar('(REGTM)) Baculovirus heliothis for control of Heliothis spp. on cotton in Louisiana. Seven tests with plots large enough to be considered "grower management units" (plot size 8.1 ha or greater) and one small plot test (plot size 1.3 ha) were conducted using biological insecticides. These tests showed that: (1) generally more Heliothis eggs were found in Dipel treated plots; (2) damage to cotton squares following Dipel applications was generally reduced somewhat; (3) damage to cotton squares following the use of Elcar was not …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Sermons By Sam Jones During His Emergence As A National Figure, 1872-1885., Herman Daniel Champion Jr Jan 1980

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Sermons By Sam Jones During His Emergence As A National Figure, 1872-1885., Herman Daniel Champion Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

With an inimitable style out of the rural south, peppered with caustic, biting criticism and practical illustrations, Sam Jones combined the rustic, earthy qualities of southern hill country religion with the full auditoriums, careful schedules and trained assistants of urban religion. After an "apprenticeship" in North Georgia Methodist Circuits and as an advocate for the Decatur Orphan's Home, Sam Jones took his brand of revivalism throughout the United States and into Canada. He consistently attracted capacity crowds, large numbers of decisions, strong controversy and extensive press coverage. The purpose of this investigation was to study the preaching career and sermons …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Speaking Of Barry Morris Goldwater, 1969-1974., Sharon Bowers Porter Jan 1980

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Speaking Of Barry Morris Goldwater, 1969-1974., Sharon Bowers Porter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The late 1960's and early 1970's witnessed a political renaissance of conservatism in America and a resurgent interest in the conservative Senator from Arizona, Barry Morris Goldwater. This dissertation attempts to explain how the Arizona made rhetorical choices in light of his political ideology. The investigation focuses on the question of whether Goldwater's conservatism or his view of himself limited his rhetorical flexibility and/or the ultimate acceptance or rejection of his messages. To facilitate this task, a comparison was made of how Goldwater approached two diverse audience types: (1) partisans and (2) neutral and hostile groups. Barry Goldwater's rhetoric displayed …

Endosymbiosis In The Caecum Of The Southern Green Stink Bug, Nezara Viridula (L.)., Robert Paul West Jan 1980

Endosymbiosis In The Caecum Of The Southern Green Stink Bug, Nezara Viridula (L.)., Robert Paul West

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies to investigate possible endosymbiotic relationships within the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), a major pest of soybeans in Louisiana, were conducted. Primary emphasis was placed on the caecum, a region of the digestive tract previously associated with microbial endosymbiosis in insects. By SEM, a monoculture of rod-shaped bacteria measuring 2.5 by 0.5 (mu)m was observed adhering to the caecal crypt walls. Examination of additional specimens revealed various morphological variations including cocci, elongated rods, and rods which were apparently budding, often found within the same specimen. Diapausing specimens appeared to be no different from reproducing individuals. TEM of …

Syntheses And Cycloadditions Of Novel Nitrones., Alexander Zirom Bimanand Jan 1980

Syntheses And Cycloadditions Of Novel Nitrones., Alexander Zirom Bimanand

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The synthesis of several "fulvenoid dipoles", molecules incorporating both fulvene and 1,3-dipolar moieties, were accomplished. Both aromatic and anti-aromatic resonance structures can be written for all fulvenoid and heptafulvenoid dipoles, but the extent of their contribution to the ground state of these molecules, and therefore, the stability of these systems is not immediately obvious by this theory. However, a qualitative application of an orbital interaction model leads to the prediction that fulvenoid dipoles, formally consisting of diene and 1,3-dipole units, will be stabilized when the 1,3-dipolar unit is a good donor (low ionization potential), while heptafulvenoid dipoles will be stabilized …

An Experimental And Mechanistic Study Of The High Temperature Thermal Decomposition Of Methanol, David Leslie Miller May 1979

An Experimental And Mechanistic Study Of The High Temperature Thermal Decomposition Of Methanol, David Leslie Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The thermal decomposition of methanol (CH3OH) was studied in4 both conventional and single-pulse shock tubes over the temperature and pressure ranges 950-2000 K and 1*5-12.5 atm., respectively. In both studies, highly diluted CH3OH mixtures in Ar were shock heated behind reflected waves. In the conventional shock tube infrared emission at both 3.47 and 9.56 M>m was monitored in order to measure CH3OH concentration as a function of time. The CH3OH concentration profiles were characterized by overall global expressions. Quenched samples from the single-pulse shock tube were analyzed by gas chromatography. The data obtained from the two sets of experiments …

Land Loss In Coastal Louisiana (U.S.A.), N. J. Craig, R. Eugene Turner, J. W. Day Jr. Mar 1979

Land Loss In Coastal Louisiana (U.S.A.), N. J. Craig, R. Eugene Turner, J. W. Day Jr.

Faculty Publications

This paper examines causes and consequences of wetland losses in coastal Louisiana. Land loss is a cumulative impact, the result of many impacts both natural and artificial. Natural losses are caused by subsidence, decay of abandoned river deltas, waves, and storms. Artificial losses result from flood-control practices, impoundments, and dredging and subsequent erosion of artificial channels. Wetland loss also results from spoil disposal upon wetlands and land reclamation projects.

Total land loss in Louisiana's coastal zone is at least 4,300 ha/year. Some wetlands are converted to spoil banks and other eco-systems so that wetland losses are probably two to three …
