Steady State Inviscid Flow Around Semi-Infinite Axisymmetric Bodies, Louay N. Mohammad Aug 1980

Steady State Inviscid Flow Around Semi-Infinite Axisymmetric Bodies, Louay N. Mohammad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The steady-state penetration mechanism is utilized in a number of in-situ testing -instruments such as the cone penetrometers, and piezometer probe due to faster and more economical analysis of soil parameters.

In order to bring a more comprehensive understanding to the mechanism of cone penetration, the shape and scale effects of cones should be investigated. Considering the steady state nature of these problems, this study focuses on the simulation of penetration of axisymmetric bodies in inviscid, incompressible fluids.

The wide variety of cone penetrometers introduces complicated mixed boundary conditions. A finite element code is written in order to determine the …

Effect Of Management Systems On Performance And Parasite Infections Of Finishing Lambs In The Gulf Coast Area, Annabel Louise Kellam May 1980

Effect Of Management Systems On Performance And Parasite Infections Of Finishing Lambs In The Gulf Coast Area, Annabel Louise Kellam

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An experiment was conducted over a three-year period to determine the effect of three management systems on performance and degree of parasitism of spring born market lambs. One hundred fifty-six Suffolk and Suffolk sired crossbred lambs (60, 48 and 48 in 1977, 1978 and 1979, respectively) were randomly alloted so as to balance the effect of sex, weight and breeding to one of three treatments: (1) pasture plus creep, (2) drylot and (3) an expanded metal floored pen. All lambs were fed a pelleted ration consisting of approximately 50% forage. Lambs were weaned at an average age of 60 days, …

An Experimental Facility For The Study Of Capillary Instability Of Liquid Jets, Niehua Chow May 1980

An Experimental Facility For The Study Of Capillary Instability Of Liquid Jets, Niehua Chow

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An overview of the instability of laminar Newtonian liquid jets in air is given, and the experimental procedures used by previous investigators are described. It is shown that empirical data are still needed for design purposes. For a systematic improvement of existing mathematical models through experimental data, a facility is designed, constructed, and tested for measuring the breakup length of jets and the size distribution of the drops. It consists of a flow system, an electro-optical detector and a signal conditioner. The performance of the electro-optical detector is shown to be good. The output signal from the electronics is a …

Techniques Of Atomic Absorption: Direct Determination Of Cadmium In Biological Materials And Metal Speciation By Differential Atomization., Susan Deborah Weiss Jan 1980

Techniques Of Atomic Absorption: Direct Determination Of Cadmium In Biological Materials And Metal Speciation By Differential Atomization., Susan Deborah Weiss

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A method was developed for the direct determination of cadmium in biological materials. Determination of metals in biological samples was made difficult by the low concentration, the complex matrix, and the small amount of sample generally available. Current methods for this type of analysis involve either a wet-ashing or a dry-ashing step to break down the organic matrix and concentrate the metals present. These procedures often cause positive and/or negative errors due to contamination of the sample or loss of the metal of interest. The described method avoided these sources of error by eliminating sample pretreatment steps. The method made …

Perceiving The Causes Of Cigarette Smoking: A Study Of Children And Adolescents., Rebecca Marie Watson Jan 1980

Perceiving The Causes Of Cigarette Smoking: A Study Of Children And Adolescents., Rebecca Marie Watson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Attribution theory (Heider, 1958; Jones and Davis, 1965; Jones and Nisbett, 1972; Bem, 1967) has been modified from its usual experimental setting to serve as a theoretical model for a survey of cigarette smoking behavior. The smoking behavior of "significant others" is analyzed as an important information source in the process of belief formation. The instrument for the study was a "Health Information Questionnaire" which was given to 3014 school children (grades 3-12) in Bogalusa, Louisiana, during the 1976-1977 school year. Frequencies and percentages of students' own smoking behavior and of students by the smoking behavior of "significant others" were …

On The Classification Of Families: Dimensions Of Family Functioning Descriptions., Maria Vidos Jan 1980

On The Classification Of Families: Dimensions Of Family Functioning Descriptions., Maria Vidos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to determine the degree of commonality among current models of family assessment. The goal was to ascertain the most significant dimensions of family functioning. These ends were achieved by means of a principal components factor analysis. Three hundred Introductory Psychology students at Louisiana State University were asked to describe their family of origin using 240 behavioral statements provided by the examiner. The statements, printed on 3 x 5 cards, were drawn from a pool of assessment models described by Fisher (1976). The students were asked to sort each of the statements by asking …

The Biology Of Beggiatoa., William Roy Strohl Jan 1980

The Biology Of Beggiatoa., William Roy Strohl

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Part I. An accurate most-probable-number enumeration method was developed for counting the number of Beggiatoa trichomes from various freshwater sediments. The medium consisted of extracted hay, diluted soil extract, 0.05% sodium acetate, and 15-35 units per ml of catalase. The same enrichment medium, but without the acetate, was the best enrichment medium from which to obtain pure cultures. A total of thirty-two strains of Beggiatoa were isolated from seven different freshwater habitats and were separated into five groups based on several preliminary characteristics. Four of the groups contained cells with trichomes of approximately the same diameter (1.5-2.7 (mu)m) and may …
