The Broken-Circuit Complex: Its Structure And Factorizations, Tom Brylawski, James Oxley Jan 1981

The Broken-Circuit Complex: Its Structure And Factorizations, Tom Brylawski, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

In this paper we derive several structural results for the broken-circuit complex of a combinatorial geometry G. In particular, motivated by the question as to when the characteristic polynomial of G factors, we investigate when the broken-circuit complex has a non-trivial join decomposition, conjecturing that such a decomposition cannot occur unless G has a non-trivial modular flat. © 1980, Academic Press Inc. Intersubband-Cyclotron Combined Resonance In A Surface Space-Charge Layer, R. F. O'Connell Jan 1981

Intersubband-Cyclotron Combined Resonance In A Surface Space-Charge Layer, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

In a magnetic field tilted with respect to the surface of Si, combined resonance transitions have been observed, resulting from a coupling of Landau levels and subband states. Because of some unexplained features in the observations, we analyze what one should expect on theoretical grounds. We conclude that unexplained discrepancies between theory and experiment still exist, which may indicate that collective effects are playing a role. © 1981.

Null Faraday Rotation-A Clean Method For Determination Of Relaxation Times And Effective Masses In Mis And Other Systems, R. F. O'Connell, G. L. Wallace

Faculty Publications

We determine the relation between photon, cyclotron, collision, and plasma frequencies which ensures a null Faraday rotation for electromagnetic wave propagation in a free-carrier magnetoplasma. This provides a clean determination (in the sense that it is independent of multiple reflections and the length of the plasma along the beam direction) of scattering times and effective masses in MIS and other systems. © 1981.

Morphology And Function Of Toxic Neutrophils In The Dog., Kent Alan Gossett Jan 1981

Morphology And Function Of Toxic Neutrophils In The Dog., Kent Alan Gossett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Turpentine-induced inflammation was used as a model for the study of toxic neutrophils in the dog. Changes in the number of circulating toxic neutrophils paralleled changes in clinical signs, body temperature, total leukocyte count, and neutrophil count. Light microscopic appearance of neutrophils from turpentine-injected dogs was similar to toxic neutrophils seen clinically in dogs with severe bacterial or other inflammatory diseases. Ultrastructural studies showed that foamy vacuolation of the cytoplasm was due to irregular, electron-lucent areas which often contained membrane remnants and myelin figures. Increased cytoplasmic basophilia was due to the retention of rough endoplasmic reticulum and polyribosomes in mature …

The Origins And Development Of The Gentlemanly Ideal In The South: 1607-1865., Robert Lynn Rainard Jan 1981

The Origins And Development Of The Gentlemanly Ideal In The South: 1607-1865., Robert Lynn Rainard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the origins and development of the gentleman in the South. It begins with an examination of Castiglione's The Courtier. Castiglione provided a discussion of the ideal man of Renaissance Italy. His ideal man, the courtier, possessed cultivation, character, and class. Together, these attributes made up the complete, or universal man. The Renaissance idea of the complete man profoundly influenced all later thought concerning the nature of the gentleman. The English embraced Castiglione's idea of a complete man, but they immediately adapted it to suit their own needs. The English placed much greater …

Alfred North Whitehead And The Quest For Political Vision., Larry W. Chappell Jan 1981

Alfred North Whitehead And The Quest For Political Vision., Larry W. Chappell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explores Alfred North Whitehead's relevance for political philosophy by attempting to locate his work within the tradition of "classical political philosophy." Classical political philosophy is understood to involve a determined quest for "vision" in all matters, including politics. The quest is constituted by several interlocking inquiries which are schematically represented as (1) The quest for comprehensiveness: speculation; (2) The quest for God: theology; (3) The quest for wholeness: ethics; (4) The quest for man: philosophical anthropology. Each of these inquiries is embodied in the key works of classical political philosophy such as Plato's Republic and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, …

Acoustic Detection Of High Energy Particles., Stanley Dean Hunter Jan 1981

Acoustic Detection Of High Energy Particles., Stanley Dean Hunter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The acoustic signals generated by charged particles traversing a medium offer a new technique for particle detection. Rapid thermal expansion of the medium produces an impulsive signal with a shape similar to one cycle of a sine wave. In the case of charged particles, the energy deposition results from thermalization of the particles ionization energy loss in the medium. A thermodynamic model which derives an acoustic potential for the signal produced by a given energy deposition is presented. The relationship between the acoustic potential and the signal period and amplitude is illustrated. Three non-thermal mechanisms (1) microbubble production; (2) molecular …

Growth, Development, And Synchronization Of Larval Diatraea Saccharalis And Characterization Of Plasma Juvenile Hormone Esterase., Richard Michael Roe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Male sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), larvae at egg hatch were equal in weight to females, but on artificial diet, pupated in less time and achieved a smaller larval maximum and 1 day old pupal weight. The peak period for egg hatch and ecdysis was within a few hours after lights-on, and pupation occurred at random. Males completed larval development in 5 and 6 stadia and females in 6 stadia. Net larval growth was greater for males and females completing development in 6 stadia than in 5 stadia. Ecdysis to the last stadium occurred during the 12th to 14th day …

A Systematic Study Of The Mexican, Central American, And Jamaican Species Of The Genus Calea., James Richard Wussow

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Calea, a large genus in the Asteraceae, tribe Heliantheae, consists of mostly shrubs that occur throughout the Neotropics. Robinson and Greenman's treatment of the Mexican and Central American species has remained the definitive study of Calea for this area since 1896. Recent studies, including the present one, have greatly modified their earlier treatment. From among the more than 75 names attributed to Calea in Mexico, Central America, and Jamaica, the present study recognizes 18 taxa representing 8 species and 10 varieties. The species recognized in this treatment include C. crassifolia, C. fluviatilis, C. longipedicellata, C. jamaicensis, C. prunifolia, C. ternifolia, …

Part I. Photoelectron Spectroscopic Studies Of Amines, Alkenes, And Substituted Benzenes. Part Ii. Theoretical Studies Of Quinones., Melvin Dale Rozeboom Jan 1981

Part I. Photoelectron Spectroscopic Studies Of Amines, Alkenes, And Substituted Benzenes. Part Ii. Theoretical Studies Of Quinones., Melvin Dale Rozeboom

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Methyl-substituted piperidines, oxanes, 1,3-dioxanes, and cyclohexanones were studied by photoelectron spectroscopy (pes) to determine the mechanism by which alkyl groups stabilize radical cations. Hyperconjugation was found to be the dominant mechanism, while inductive effects and charge-induced polarization were indicated to be less effective. N-Arylazacycloalkanes were studied by pes to correlate solution basicities with ionization potentials (IPs). Conformational analysis of these compounds indicated that aryl-substituted aziridines are coplanar (conjugating) in all cases studied, while ortho substituent(s) may cause rotation and loss of conjugation between the lone pair and the phenyl ring as the amine ring size is increased. N-Phenylpiperidine was indicated …

A Study Of Ascus Developmental Fine Structure In Eleutherascus Peruvianus Huang With Special Reference To Ascospore Ontogeny., Walstine Lon Steffens Iii Jan 1981

A Study Of Ascus Developmental Fine Structure In Eleutherascus Peruvianus Huang With Special Reference To Ascospore Ontogeny., Walstine Lon Steffens Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eleutherascus is an enigmatic ascomycete genus with some structural features common to both the Eurotiales and Pezizales. It lacks a peridium and paraphyses and typically produces an ascocarp consisting of only one or two asci and some sterile hyphae. The life cycle of E. peruvianus was studied by electron and optical microscopy. The principle events that culminate in ascospore production and germination are described and compared to their equivalents in some purportedly related species. Ascogenesis is initiated through crozier development in a manner similarly described in many Discomycetes. Additionally, a specialized septal pore cap structure (which appears structurally equivalent to …

Theoretical Studies Of Nucleophilic Additions To Alkynes And Stabilities Of Anions., Robert William Strozier Jan 1981

Theoretical Studies Of Nucleophilic Additions To Alkynes And Stabilities Of Anions., Robert William Strozier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nucleophilic additions to alkynes were investigated using ab initio molecular orbital theory. Analyses of the energetic consequences of certain molecule distortions showed that the anti selectivity of nucleophilic additions to simple alkyl, aryl, and halogenated alkynes was consistent with trans bending of acetylene. This premise was verified by considering the addition of the hydride ion to acetylene which gave a single transition state resulting from anti addition. Comparing the activation energies for hydride addition to ethylene and acetylene showed that addition to acetylene improves relative to addition to ethylene with increasing basis set sophistication. Nucleophilic addition of ammonia to cyanoacetylene …

Some Problems In One And Two-Dimensional Coupled Thermoelasticity., Abdel Hassan Ghosn Jan 1981

Some Problems In One And Two-Dimensional Coupled Thermoelasticity., Abdel Hassan Ghosn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The one-dimensional, cylindrical, quasi-static, coupled thermoelastic problem is considered. The temperature and displacement fields in an infinitely long solid cylinder, and an infinite medium with a cylindrical hole whose boundaries are subjected to a time dependent function, are presented. These results, under the appropriate assumptions and loadings, are identical to published results. Also presented is the general solution in the transform domain for the two-dimensional cartesian plane strain coupled thermoelastic problem. As an application the Lamb plane problem is treated under two loading conditions. The steady-state (large time) temperature solution obtained in this investigation and that obtained by a different …

An Experimental Evaluation Of Neuber's Cyclic Relation At Room And Elevated Temperature., Michael Wade Guillot Jan 1981

An Experimental Evaluation Of Neuber's Cyclic Relation At Room And Elevated Temperature., Michael Wade Guillot

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Neuber's rule which relates the stress and strain concentration factor at a notch to the theoretical stress concentration factor for a monotonic loading case. It is currently being used in a modified form to analyze cyclic loading cases. The purpose of this research was to experimentally measure the four quantities incorporated in Neuber's cyclic relation so that a direct evaluation of the relation could be made. Three of the parameters were measured during tests lasting a thousand cycles on notched specimens run under completely reversed load control. These three were the stress and strain in the specimen far removed from …

On The Biosynthesis Of Irregular Terpenes: Mechanistic Studies Employing The Thiamine Thiazole As An Isoprenoid Analogue., Steven J. Jungk Jan 1981

On The Biosynthesis Of Irregular Terpenes: Mechanistic Studies Employing The Thiamine Thiazole As An Isoprenoid Analogue., Steven J. Jungk

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The irregular terpene, 2,6,9,13-tetramethyl-6-vinyl-tetradeca-2,8,12-trien-7-one (18), and the terpenoid, 1-phenyl-2,6-dimethyl-2-vinyl-hept-5-en-1-one (19) were synthesized by the Continuous Flow Reformatsky method using geranoyl chloride and benzoyl chloride, respectively. Geranyl bromide was used to generate the required organo-zinc adduct. Citral and geranyl bromide produced 3,6,9,13-tetramethyl-9-vinyl-tetradeca-3,7,12-trien-6-ol (17) by this method. Attempts to isomerize 17 to 2,6,9,13-tetramethyl-6-vinyl-tetradeca-2,8,12-trien-7-ol failed. It is postulated that 17 is more stable due to steric compression around the quaternary carbon. Comparison of 18 and the terpene isolated from yeast enzyme preparations by Bell('135) showed them to be identical. Attempts to synthesize 2-hydroxygeranyl thiamine by the addition of thiamine to citral failed. Cinnamaldehyde …

Tree Ring Characteristics Of Baldcypress Growing In Varying Flooding Regimes In The Barataria Basin, Louisiana., Lynne Jordan Bowers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Baldcypress (Taxodium distichum L. Rich.) is a desirable species for tree ring studies due to its longevity, resistance to decay, and the statistical characteristics of the ring record (Bowers, 1973). This investigation endeavors to determine: (1) the type and number of samples needed for such studies; (2) the values of x-ray densitometry analysis with the species; (3) the usefulness of the data for delineating differences in swamp sites which differ in length of flooding and if these differences could affect wood quality; and (4) the appropriateness of the data from disturbed swamp sites in south Louisiana to dendroclimatic studies. Differences …

Factors Of Believability Of Television Newscasters., Mary Irene Blue

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The believability of male versus female television newscasters was examined. The research was conducted in two parts. First, a nation-wide survey of television news directors was conducted to determine their opinions concerning "What makes a newscaster believable?" The news directors were randomly selected from Broadcasting Yearbook's "Directory of Television Stations in the United States." The responses of the survey were converted to semantic differential scales. Two newscasts were constructed and videotaped which were identical except one was delivered by a male anchor person and the other by a female anchor person. A written description was used to manipulate the perceived …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Certain Variables To Sex Characteristic Identification From The Speech Of Heterosexual And Homosexual Individuals., Norma Jean Cospelich Travis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explored relationships of speaker sex and masculinity-femininity judgments and 12 measures of rate, fundamental frequency, and intensity from taped reading and spontaneous speech samples of female and male heterosexual and homosexual individuals. Phase One was designed to determine judgment reliability and any procedural variables that might influence judgments. Sex judgments were more accurate on the speakers' second performances. Both sex and masculine-feminine judgments were more accurate on reading than on spontaneous speech. Analysis of judgments from type-scripts of spontaneous speech yielded a significant judge sex-by-training interaction. In Phase Two, 20 listeners judged sex and masculinity-femininity from taped reading …
