The Austrian Problem Of Language And Peter Handke: A Documentation., Donald Russell Bailey Jan 1981

The Austrian Problem Of Language And Peter Handke: A Documentation., Donald Russell Bailey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Linguistic skepticism and the resultant awareness of the limits of language can be traced back to Hamann, Herder, and Humboldt, through Romanticism and French Symbolism, up to modern times. What has come to be called the crisis of language (Sprachkrise) can be viewed as one segment of a broader, multi-media phenomenon. The intensity of this crisis is concentrated in Austro-Hungary in the waning days of the Habsburg Monarchy. From this time forward supersensitivity to language remains a strongly Austrian phenomenon and can be followed through the European, German-language, and Austrian movements of this century, up to the founding of the …

Validity Of Running Tests Of 4, 8, And 12 Minutes Duration In Estimating Aerobic Power For College Women Of Different Fitness Levels., Jeffery Joseph Dorociak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One of the objectives of any physical education program is the development and measurement of cardiorespiratory fitness. The most accepted measure of aerobic power is maximum oxygen consumption which must be measured in a laboratory setting and therefore, does not lend itself to mass testing. Of the field tests that have been developed, distance running tests are most often recommended. This experiment investigated the validity of distance run tests in estimating aerobic power for college women of different fitness levels. More specifically, distance covered in 4, 8, and 12 minutes of running were correlated with maximal oxygen consumption. Body composition …

Remarque's 'Weltanschauung': A Study In Fictional Dualism., Ingrid Ehrmann Gross Jan 1981

Remarque's 'Weltanschauung': A Study In Fictional Dualism., Ingrid Ehrmann Gross

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this study was to examine Remarque's Weltanschauung as expressed through his novels. Remarque sees the world negatively when he regards it as a whole. This all-encompassing world, the macrocosm, is defined by two basic factors: the evil side of man's nature, and the existence of death. The world, as Remarque views it, is not ruled according to a divine plan but is a world of man's own making. Because man has been unable to keep in check his tendencies for committing evil, he has brought about the events which characterize the first half of the twentieth century: …

Studies On Carbohydrate Metabolism In Normal And Diabetic Rats., Beverly Ann Bauer Jan 1981

Studies On Carbohydrate Metabolism In Normal And Diabetic Rats., Beverly Ann Bauer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The specific activities of phosphofructokinase, aldolase, and pyruvate kinase was diminished in crude extracts from skeletal muscle of streptozotocin diabetic rats, whereas the activities of glucosephosphate isomerase and phosphoglucomutase were not changed. The decreased phosphofructokinase activity was shown to be independent of allosteric control, and it could be reversed by insulin treatment. A rapid and mild method for the purification of phosphofructokinase from rat skeletal muscle were developed. The partially purified enzyme from muscle of normal and streptozotocin diabetic rats showed identical Michaelis constants for ATP and equal sensitivity to inhibition by excess of ATP. Extracts of quick-frozen muscle from …

Control Algorithms, Tuning, And Adaptive Gain Tuning In Process Control., Alberto Arner Rovira Jan 1981

Control Algorithms, Tuning, And Adaptive Gain Tuning In Process Control., Alberto Arner Rovira

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Controller tuning relationships based on optimizing the response of a first order lag plus dead time process are developed for proportional-plus-integral (PI) and proportional-plus-integral-plus-derivative (PID) control algorithms. Minimum error integrals were used as criteria of performance for the feedback control loop. The relationships presented are shown to provide excellent response characteristics in particular for processes where little or no overshoot is desired. The effect of applying the proportional action to the feedback variable in a PI control algorithm is analyzed and found to provide a more consistent response to set point changes and load changes than the conventional PI algorithm, …

Shifts In Narrative Voices In Four Novels Of Emilia Pardo Bazan., Kizzie Anita Gowin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The narrative voices in Los pazos de Ulloa (1886), La madre Naturaleza (1887), La Quimera (1905), and La sirena negra (1908) by Emilia Pardo Bazan were studied. The analysis revealed that the author primarily employed omniscient narration in Los pazos de Ulloa and La madre Naturaleza. She used the relatively new narrative techniques of free indirect style and interior monologue when she wished to present the innermost thoughts of the characters in these two naturalistic novels. Pardo Bazan continued using the narrative techniques of the two earlier novels in La Quimera. However, she employed first-person narration more frequently and extensively …

Feasibility Analysis, Dynamics, And Control Of Distillation Columns With Vapor Recompression., Edgar Hernandez Jan 1981

Feasibility Analysis, Dynamics, And Control Of Distillation Columns With Vapor Recompression., Edgar Hernandez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The conventional distillation system owes its existence to its simplicity, low investment, and inexpensive energy. Inexpensive energy is something that belongs to the past. Therefore, vapor recompression has indeed become more attractive despite the more complex flow arrangements. In this research, a steady state model was developed to study the effect of different variables on the feasibility of heat pump installations. As expected, the heat pump system favored the close boiling mixture against the wide boiling mixture. A relationship between the savings and the thermodynamic availability of the mixture was devised. The savings were also found to be very sensitive …

Catalytic Generation Of Hydrogen From The Hydrolysis Of Sodium-Borohydride. Application In A Hydrogen/Oxygen Fuel Cell., Clifford Mark Kaufman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Hydrogen has been promoted as the energy alternative of the future. Fuel cell utilization of hydrogen minimizes pollution while optimizing energy conversion efficiencies. Sodium borohydride has been investigated as a possible hydrogen storage and transport medium. Within the proper catalytic environment, one gram of sodium borohydride liberates almost 2.4 liters of hydrogen at a controllable rate. The effects of acids, transition metal salts, and transition metals on the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride have been mathematically quantified. Least squares analyses have reduced the data to simple combinations of algebraic expressions. Specifically, acid acceleration is subject to pseudo-first-order kinetics; equivalent acid concentrations …

Cell-Free Biosynthesis Of Erythroglycan In A Microsomal Fraction From K-562 Cells, T. Z. Russin, R. A. Laine, S. J. Turco

Faculty Publications

Particulate membrane preparations from K-562 [human CML (chronic-myelogenous-leukaemia)-derived] cells catalyse the transfer of [3H]galactose from UDP-[3H]galactose and [3H]N-acetylglucosamine from UDP-[3H]N-acetylglucosamine into an endogenous product that on digestion with Pronase yields long-chain glycopeptides (mol. wt. 7000-10000) called 'erythroglycan'. Incorporation of either labelled sugar increased up to 60 min of incubation time. The labelled erythroglycan was isolated by chromatography on Sephadex G-50 and characterized by digestion with endo-β-galactosidase from Escherichia freundii, followed by analysis on Bio-Gel P-2 and paper chromatography. This digestion gave the following four products: (1) a disaccharide with the sequence βGlcNAc-βGal; (2) a trisaccharide with the sequence βGal-βGlcNAc-βGal; (3) …

The Effect Of Methionine Or Cysteine On Cobalt Toxicity In The Chick., L. L. Southern, D. H. Baker

Faculty Publications

Three experiments were conducted to investigate the interaction of cobalt with sulfur-containing amino acids in the chick. Fortified corn-soybean meal diets were fed and tissue concentrations of cobalt were assessed. In Experiment 1, three levels of cobalt (0, 250, and 500 microgram/g) were fed in the presence and absence of .50% supplemental DL-methionine. Dietary additions of cobalt depressed growth rate and caused cobalt accumulation in the liver and kidney. Supplemental methionine in excess of the requirement for maximal chick weight gains partially alleviated the depression in performance and decreased cobalt accumulation in the liver and kidney. Two levels of cobalt …

Selective Antagonism Of The Error‐Increasing Effect Of Morphine By Naloxone In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher

Faculty Publications

Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout but did not reset the chain. When either morphine or naloxone was administered alone, the overall response rate decreased with increasing doses. The rate‐decreasing effect was accompanied by an increase in percent errors with morphine but not with naloxone. Both effects of morphine were antagonized by doses of naloxone that were ineffective when given alone. The antagonism was selective in that naloxone (3 …
