Mitotic Triggers In The Cell Cycle: Phase Dependency Of Cleavage Advance On The Chromosome Cycle In Parthenogenetically Activated Sea Urchin Eggs., Barbara Ellen Wolfanger Belisle Jan 1981

Mitotic Triggers In The Cell Cycle: Phase Dependency Of Cleavage Advance On The Chromosome Cycle In Parthenogenetically Activated Sea Urchin Eggs., Barbara Ellen Wolfanger Belisle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the sea urchin egg, metabolic activation, DNA synthesis and the chromosome cycle can be induced with parthenogenic activators (NH(,4)Cl or procaine) although no spontaneous cleavage will occur. To determine the effects of these agents on other cell cycle events, eggs from four species of sea urchins were activated with NH(,4)Cl or procaine and then fertilized at different times of the chromosome cycle. These eggs show a decrease in the time to first cleavage which is apparently coupled to the parthenogenecally induced chromosome cycle. The advance is seen whether the activated eggs are fertilized during the first or second chromosome …

Indigenism And Feminism In The Prose Fiction Of Rosario Castellanos., George Alexander St. John Robinson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The novel of Indian concern has had a long vogue in Latin America, where it is known alternately as novela indianista or novela indigenista. This tradition in the novel has produced such well known works as Lopez y Fuentes' El indio, Alcides Arguedas' Raza de bronce, Jorge Icaza's Huasipungo and Ciro Alegr(')ia's El mundo es ancho y ajeno, all published between 1919 and 1941. These novels seek to illustrate the deplorable conditions of life in Indian communities from Mexico to Bolivia. In so doing, however, the Indian characters of these novels are generally reduced to single dimensional characters devoid of …

A Study Of The Effects Of Marketability On The Distribution Of Market Generated Returns., Bruce Loren Mcmanis Jan 1981

A Study Of The Effects Of Marketability On The Distribution Of Market Generated Returns., Bruce Loren Mcmanis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Very little theory has been developed on the effect of marketability on the distribution of returns. As a result, this study is an empirical exploration of that relationship, without any strong, preconceived hypotheses. Since the distributions were likely to be non-normal, but otherwise indeterminate as to form, a test had to be developed to determine the existence of differences. It was decided that the first four moments and the studentized range could effectively capture the characteristics of a distribution and provide a set of measures to serve as variables in discriminant analyses. Marketability was defined as shares traded divided by …

Some Singular Measures On The Circle Which Improve L('P) Spaces., David Lawrence Ritter Jan 1981

Some Singular Measures On The Circle Which Improve L('P) Spaces., David Lawrence Ritter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Let (mu) be a positive Borel measure on the circle group T. If, for P (GREATERTHEQ) 1, there is a q > p such that (mu) defines a bounded convolution operator from L('p)(T) to L('q)(T), then (mu) is L('p)-improving or (mu) improves L('p). Here a result of Oberlin is extended. It is shown that a large class of Cantor-Lebesgue measures improve L('p)(T) for p > 1. Also, for the members of a particular sequence of Lebesgue measures associated with some homogeneous Cantor sets, which includes the middle-third Cantor-Lebesgue measure studied by Oberlin, estimates are obtained for the amount of improvement. These results …

A synopsis of the Pauline paradigm of salvation (man in sin--grace through Christ--man "in Christ") is presented. Chapter II, "Old Adam and the Old Covenant," explores St. Paul's and Taylor's concepts of the Creation, Man's Fall in Adam, Original Sin, …

Inhomogeneous Relativistic Electron Systems: A Density Functional Formalism., Munagala Venkata Ramana Jan 1981

Inhomogeneous Relativistic Electron Systems: A Density Functional Formalism., Munagala Venkata Ramana

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The correlation energy of an unpolarized relativistic electron gas is numerically calculated by summing ring diagrams due to both the longitudinal and transverse photon contributions. From this a local relativistic correlation potential is deduced which appears in the density functional theory of inhomogeneous systems where relativistic effects make important contributions. The non-relativistic gas results are found to be significant underestimates. A fitted form of the correlation energy and potential were used in a self-consistent calculation of energies of atoms of large Z. Trends of the correlation contribution across the periodic table are evaluated and discussed. Correlation contributions to the K(alpha)(,1) …

Faraday Rotation Investigations Of Surface Space-Charge Layers In Metal - Oxide - Semiconductor (Mos) Systems., Gary L. Wallace Jan 1981

Faraday Rotation Investigations Of Surface Space-Charge Layers In Metal - Oxide - Semiconductor (Mos) Systems., Gary L. Wallace

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The free carrier Faraday effect is considered in both the Drude model and the Appel-Overhauser model for inversion layer electrons at the SiO(,2)-Si interface. An exact algebraic relation between the photon, cyclotron, collision and plasma frequencies is obtained which must be satisfied in order to achieve null rotation and null ellipticity for a single pass of the electromagnetic wave in the Drude model. Plots of the rotation versus angular photon frequency in the Appel-Overhauser model for various values of the electron-electron (e-e) scattering time (tau)(,e) are presented. These plots show that Faraday rotation measurements are a possible way of determining …

Frequency Response Analysis Of Distillation Column Interaction., Chien Wang Jan 1981

Frequency Response Analysis Of Distillation Column Interaction., Chien Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A dynamic pressure model of multicomponent distillation is developed in the frequency domain. The model consists of a set of linearized overall and component balances, enthalpy balance, pressure relationship, hydraulic equation and equilibrium relationships for each tray, the condenser and the reboiler of a general column. A numerical method consisting of total scaled pivoting Gaussian elimination with the method of residues is worked out for solving the model in the frequency domain to obtain all of the desired transfer functions. The resulting transfer functions are presented as Bode plots. The measure of interaction between the various control loops can then …

Electron-Phonon Scattering Rates In Antimony: Radio-Frequency Size Effect., Thomas Clifton O'Hara Jan 1981

Electron-Phonon Scattering Rates In Antimony: Radio-Frequency Size Effect., Thomas Clifton O'Hara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Temperature dependent radio-frequency size effect measurements have been performed on high-purity, single crystal antimony plates at thicknesses of 0.592 mm, 0.347 mm, and 0.238 mm. The natural logs of the amplitudes of the data are found experimentally proportional to T('2) in agreement with previous measurements. However, the data are analyzed according to a model in which the electron-phonon scattering frequencies are proportional to T('3), with the explanation that the T('2) behavior is due to the small pieces of Fermi surface in antimony. The electron-phonon scattering frequencies are determined for both holes and electrons and are found to be highly anisotropic …
