Biochemical And Sensory Changes In Crawfish During Long-Term Frozen Storage., Ayed Shakir Amr Jan 1981

Biochemical And Sensory Changes In Crawfish During Long-Term Frozen Storage., Ayed Shakir Amr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Raw and blanched whole-glazed crawfish, and crawfish tailmeat were frozen in plastic trays and polyethylene pouches respectively and stored for 10 months at -18 C. Samples were drawn at two-month intervals and analyzed for 2-thiobarbituric acid values, and free fatty acid content. In general, blanching, presence of fat, and air were found to accelerate the development of oxidative rancidity. On the other hand blanching was found to reduce but not totally inhibit the production of free fatty acids. Fat from whole-glazed samples was analyzed at the beginning and end of the storage period. Six lipid fractions were confirmed, and one …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bracts in upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., have been implicated in byssionosis, a lung disorder associated with textile mill workers. Quantitative genetic studies were conducted to determine the inheritance of bract surface area and ratio of bract size/lint weight per boll. A diallel analysis was performed using seven parents and their 21 F(,1) and F(,2) populations. The parents were specifically chosen to represent a range of bract sizes, thus inferences were only made to the material included in this study. The two year-two location parent means ranged from 4.1 to 8.7 cm('2) in bract surface area and 2.7 to 5.6 …

Decision-Making Formats: A Comparison On An Evaluative Task Of Interacting Groups, Consensus Groups, The Nominal Group Technique, And The Delphi Technique., Robert Charles Erffmeyer Jan 1981

Decision-Making Formats: A Comparison On An Evaluative Task Of Interacting Groups, Consensus Groups, The Nominal Group Technique, And The Delphi Technique., Robert Charles Erffmeyer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Using Steiner's (1972) model of group process and productivity, four decision-making formats: the interacting method, the consensus method, the nominal group technique, and the Delphi technique, were compared on two dimensions of an effective decision, quality and acceptance. A literature review indicated that a comparison of the effectiveness of the decision-making formats is difficult because of the prevalence of idiosyncratic modifications made to the formats. To preserve the integrity of the findings of the present study, no modifications were made in the intervention techniques. A total of 144 male undergraduate students, working in four-person, ad hoc groups solved the NASA …

Anthropocentrism: Construct Validity And Measurement., Edward W. Chandler Jan 1981

Anthropocentrism: Construct Validity And Measurement., Edward W. Chandler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The values, attitudes, and beliefs which humans hold regarding mankind's role in the universe must be understood if the natural environment is to be preserved. In this study, the utility of the construct "anthropocentrism" as an organizing principle for understanding consistencies among individuals' attitudes regarding man's role in nature was explored. Anthropocentrism was defined as a doctrine which posits humanity as the center of the universe and sees the well being of mankind as the ultimate purpose of things. The various attitudinal manifestations and historical roots of anthropocentrism were explored, and the sparse empirical literature relevant to this construct was …

Methane Production From Alkaline Food Waste., Wilson Thomas Gautreaux Jr Jan 1981

Methane Production From Alkaline Food Waste., Wilson Thomas Gautreaux Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Anaerobic digestion of an alkaline food waste for methane production was investigated. The waste generated by potato processing contained significant quantities of carbohydrate degradation products and sodium carbonate. Anaerobic digestion was determined to be a reliable process for waste treatment and methane production. The high sodium levels did not inhibit anaerobic digestion at a substrate concentration of 1.0 wt % alkaline peel solids. Single and two-stage (separate acid, methane stages) anaerobic digestion systems were studied. In two-stage bench-scale studies at 37(DEGREES)C, methane production averaged 0.28 m('3)/kg COD feed or 0.65 m('3)/(m('3)(.)d) in a settled bacterial sludge methane fermenter with a …

Energy Bands In Some Transition Metals., Duane Giles Laurent Jan 1981

Energy Bands In Some Transition Metals., Duane Giles Laurent

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Self-consistent linear-combination-of-Gaussian-orbitals energy band calculations were performed for the two paramagnetic 3d transition metals, chromium and vanadium. The energy bands, densities of states and Fermi surfaces were obtained using the two most popular local-exchange-correlation potentials (Kohn-Sham-Gaspar and von Barth-Hedin) for chromium and the Kohn-Sham-Gaspar potential alone for vanadium. A comparison was made with the available experimental data. New interpretations for some of the neutron scattering data are made in the chromium case. Results are also presented for the Compton profiles and optical conductivities. These correlate well with the experiments if appropriate angular averages (for the Compton profile) and lifetime effects …

Methanogenesis In Marine Sediments Of The Mississippi River Delta., Leonard Alan Hook

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The highest most probable numbers (MPNs) of methanogens (1.18 x 10('6) cells per 100 g sediment, dry weight) and sulfate-reducers (0.31 x 10('6) cells per 100 g sediment, dry weight) in unstable, gas-rich, Mississippi River delta sediments occurred together in samples taken 0.2m below the sediment-water interface. The presence of sulfate-reducers was directly related to dissolved sulfate in the interstitial water. Dissolved methane in the sediments was inversely related to the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Methanogens and sulfate-reducers were recovered from maximum depths of 29.3 and 75.0 m, respectively. Two horizons of dissolved sulfate, with peaks of sulfate-reducer MPNs, indicated …

Developing Theological Patterns In John Milton's Poetry., Terri Rae Mckinney Jan 1981

Developing Theological Patterns In John Milton's Poetry., Terri Rae Mckinney

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of John Milton's poetry reveals a pattern of developing theological concepts which in his later years result in unorthodox theological positions: ex Deo creation, mortalism, antitrinitarianism. This theology exists within the structure of free will and rests on the concept of God as Logos. Such theological conclusions as are voiced in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained reflect Milton's vision of man's relationship to God, the nature of God and God's creation, the nature of Sin, and the means whereby man may be saved. Although unorthodox in the mainstream of seventeenth century English Protestantism on a number of doctrinal …

The Forgiving Landscape: The Poetry Of William Stafford., Malovika Mukerji Jan 1981

The Forgiving Landscape: The Poetry Of William Stafford., Malovika Mukerji

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is a wholeness and a sanity in William Stafford's vision that arises out of his allegiance to the authentic elements of our experience. These elements include the vital but continually imperiled wilderness, the human landscape of the past comprised of family, friends, and lovers, and the eternal and inescapable rhythms of time, death, mutability, and terror. In his own words, Stafford is seeking to embody in his work "the unanalyzed impressions of holiness" that the world thrusts at him. By temperament and by choice, Stafford is alienated from the so-called confessional school of poetry. Instead, he writes in the …

En lo que respecta a las clasificaciones, desde que aparecio la primera a fines del siglo XVIII, se han registrado pocas diferencias en ellas. El uso estrofico …

Simulation And Evaluation Of Distillation Control Systems Which Control Pressure With Reboiler Heat., William Bell Stewart Jr Jan 1981

Simulation And Evaluation Of Distillation Control Systems Which Control Pressure With Reboiler Heat., William Bell Stewart Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A recent industrial development in distillation control strategy is to involve pressure control as an integral part of an overall control strategy, rather than as an external feature. This approach is not to simply maintain column pressure, but to manipulate other variables using the pressure as a controlled variable. In order to study control systems which utilizes this approach, a rigorous non-linear multicomponent dynamic distillation model which includes pressure dynamics was developed. The model was based on total mole, component, and enthalpy balances as well as phase equilibrium relationships and tray hydraulics on each stage. The differential equations of this …
