The Female Archetypes In Swinburne's Early Work, 1857-1871., Betty Moss Duffy Jan 1981

The Female Archetypes In Swinburne's Early Work, 1857-1871., Betty Moss Duffy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

From "Queen Yseult," 1857, to "Hertha" of Songs before Sunrise, 1871, three archetypes--the femme fatale, the Terrible Mother, and the androgyne--dominate Swinburne's poems, dramas, and novels. These archetypes project the dominant artistic conflict of the Victorian period, the controversy over the function of art and the role of the artist, for they symbolize the psychological and cultural conflict between the doctrine of art for art's sake and its antithesis, art for morality's sake. The femme fatale becomes a symbol of art and beauty, the goal of the artist-androgyne's aesthetic quest. Her masochistic lover strives to possess beauty in the form …

The Regulation And Conservation Of Petroleum Resources In Louisiana, 1901-1940. (Volumes I And Ii)., Brady Michael Banta

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the State of Louisiana's policies and programs for the conservation and regulation of petroleum resources during the period 1901-1940. Where possible, it explores the relationship between Louisiana's regulatory policies and those of other petroleum-producing states, but it offers no comparative judgments regarding the effectiveness and success of these policies. Furthermore, the study considers contemporary federal policies and programs only when they had a direct influence on actions taken or decisions made by state officials in Louisiana. Within the limitations set forth above, this study explores the development, implementation, and effectiveness of Louisiana's petroleum conservation programs; the administrative …

The Social Environments Of Nursing Homes And Their Consequences For The Styles Of Participation Of Older Residents., Susan Mclaughlin Cole

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This exploratory, descriptive study of the social environments of two nursing homes and of the styles of participation that old residents develop has been guided by the symbolic interactionist premise that people act toward things on the basis of the meanings these things have for them. Participant observation was the primary data gathering technique, but two survey type instruments were also used. The goals of the study were to make contributions to (1) the building of grounded, substantive theory in social gerontology; (2) improving data gathering techniques appropriate for studies of old people; and (3) solving practical problems in nursing …

Sharps Rifles And Spanish Mules: The San Antonio - El Paso Mail, 1851-1864. (Volumes I And Ii)., Wayne Randolph Austerman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Between 1851 and 1861 a succession of federal mail contractors operated overland stage companies between San Antonio and El Paso, Texas. At different times during this period they expanded their service to include Santa Fe, New Mexico and San Diego, California in the system as well. They thus provided not only commercial transportation to most of the major population centers in the American Southwest, but also created the first transcontinental postal service in the nation's history. These pioneering enterprises aided the region's development with improved communications and the infusion of government funds into an area that was admittedly dependent upon …

Convective Heat Transfer For Steady Laminar Flow Between Two Confocal Elliptic Pipes With Uniform Longitudinal Wall Temperature Gradient And Heat Generation., Mohammad Ali Ebadian

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Convective heat transfer for steady laminar flow between two confocal elliptic pipes with uniform heat generation and longitudinal uniform wall temperature gradient under various heating conditions is presented in analytical closed form utilizing the exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes and energy equations. It is shown that the product of the dimensionless longitudinal uniform wall temperature gradient and Peclet number along with the magnitude of the heat generation affect the problem. The values of Nusselt numbers for several values of ellipticity and core size are obtained and presented in graphical and numerical form.

The sixty-four music therapy departments approved by the National Association for Music Therapy were …

An Evaluation Of Methods Used In Screening Progenies For Sugarcane Mosaic Virus Resistance., Donald Benjamin Fontenot Jan 1981

An Evaluation Of Methods Used In Screening Progenies For Sugarcane Mosaic Virus Resistance., Donald Benjamin Fontenot

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The methods used in screening sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) for resistance to sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) were studied, with emphasis on greenhouse techniques, natural spread in unselected progenies and screening effectiveness. Greenhouse procedures were studied at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while field tests were conducted at the St. Gabriel Experiment Station. In greenhouse studies progenies with resistant parents showed the highest resistance to infection by mechanical inoculation, followed by canes with one resistant parent. In natural field spread tests, canes of Resistant x Susceptible parents showed significantly (P < 0.05) less resistance after one test year, and no significant (P < 0.05) differences were found between resistance of any susceptibility classes the second year. The commercial check cane NCo 310 showed highly significant (P < 0.01) susceptibility when compared to canes of the other parental classes or the commercial check CP65-357. Random samples from sixteen crosses, totaling over 3200 screened seedlings, showed that 10.2 percent of these plants showed visual mosaic symptoms when allowed to grow out, unclipped, in another greenhouse. Rio sorghum, which is an indicator host of the virus strains used for inoculation, was used as uninoculated checks, and did not show symptoms. This indicates the clipping of seedlings before field transfer may be a means for virus spread into field populations. More sanitary techniques may have to be devised to accomplish this task. Results of a paired comparison test in 1979-80 showed that populations containing screened seedlings showed significant (P < 0.05) and highly significant (P < 0.01) levels of mosaic over unscreened populations. Mechanical transfer was eliminated wherever possible by minimum tillage, and plots were cut with a sugarcane harvester after plants had been dead for several weeks due to freezing and drying.

Statistical Spectroscopy Study Of Alpha Particle Transfer Strengths., Calvin Ray Countee Jan 1981

Statistical Spectroscopy Study Of Alpha Particle Transfer Strengths., Calvin Ray Countee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Statistical nuclear spectroscopy or spectral distribution methods have been developed by French and coworkers as an alternative, applicable in huge model spaces, to the conventional shell model approach for studying nuclear structure. The theory is based on the operation of a central limit theorem in large model spaces which yields a shape close to Gaussian for the smoothed eigenstate density distribution. The theory emphasizes the importance of traces of bilinear products of operators acting in a model space. Utilizing this and partitioning the model space according to group symmetries leads to an algorithm for expanding any interaction in terms of …

The Anglo-Saxon And Norman "Eigenkirche" And The Ecclesiastical Policy Of William I., Albert Simeon Cote Jr Jan 1981

The Anglo-Saxon And Norman "Eigenkirche" And The Ecclesiastical Policy Of William I., Albert Simeon Cote Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The eigenkirche or proprietary church was an important factor in the ecclesiastical policy of William I. In previous studies, the proprietary church was considered purely a local phenomenon. William's religious concerns in Normandy and England demonstrate the eigenkirche's role at the local, royal, and international levels. An examination of the legal sources is critical to understanding the proprietary church in Anglo-Saxon England, Normandy, and Norman England. The Anglo-Saxon charters provide important examples of the private church and monastery in the pre-Conquest period. In Normandy, the ducal charters, once inaccessible because of archival problems, are now available for analysis of the …

Density Functional Formalism: I. Finite Temperature Theory. Ii. An 'Atom' In A Hot, Dense Plasma., Uday Gupta Jan 1981

Density Functional Formalism: I. Finite Temperature Theory. Ii. An 'Atom' In A Hot, Dense Plasma., Uday Gupta

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The generalization of the zero temperature local density functional theory of inhomogeneous electron systems to finite temperature ensembles is discussed. A local exchange-correlation potential, V(,xc), needed for a finite temperature Kohn-Sham scheme, is developed based on the investigation of first-order exchange and 'ring'-diagram contribution to correlation effects for a wide range of electron densities and temperature. Comparison is made with existing results in the fully degenerate and non-degenerate limits. In the intermediate degeneracy region, the correlation effect is found to be enhanced--the importance of this for various physical systems is pointed out. An application of V(,xc) is made to illustrate …

Genetic And Molecular Genetic Studies In The Cytoplasmic Incompatibility System In The Mosquito Culex Pipiens., David Ray Mcgee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An analysis of the cytoplasmic incompatibility system in Culex pipiens has been made. Both normal and antibiotic-resistant strains have been established using erythromycin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline. A complete genetic analysis has been made using all possible reciprocal crosses. Crosses between the normal strains show unidirectional compatibility. The genetic crosses involving the tetracycline-resistant strain show a reversal of the direction of compatibility when compared with those involving the untreated parental strain. Erythromycin and chloramphenicol-resistant strains exhibited no such change in direction of compatibility when compared with their respective untreated parental strains. Exceptional crossing relationships between chloramphenicol and tetracycline-resistant strains were found. …

The Effects Of Noise, Provocation, And Level Of Self-Awareness On Physical Aggression., John Fontan Knipmeyer Jan 1981

The Effects Of Noise, Provocation, And Level Of Self-Awareness On Physical Aggression., John Fontan Knipmeyer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The cognitive-labeling hypothesis states that the arousal properties of noise will increase aggression only if a person has been provoked and labels the arousal as anger. The arousal hypothesis states that noise-induced arousal may directly increase aggression. It is suggested that discrepant findings are due to differences in subjects' level of self-awareness when participating in sedate versus physical measures of aggression. Male subjects engaged in physical aggression by throwing balls at a confederate within a 2 x 2 x 2 design comprised of provocation versus no provocation, noise versus no noise, and low versus high self-awareness. The ball-throwing was videotaped …

Detection Of Free Radicals From The Reactions Of Ozone With Olefins And From Cigarette Smoke By Electron Spin Resonance Techniques., Donald Gregory Prier Jan 1981

Detection Of Free Radicals From The Reactions Of Ozone With Olefins And From Cigarette Smoke By Electron Spin Resonance Techniques., Donald Gregory Prier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A novel technique is presented that allows detection of free radicals from ozone-olefin reactions for the first time. Olefins are ozonated at -78(DEGREES)C, the unreacted ozone removed, the spin trap added, and the solution warmed. The radicals spin trapped indicate that trioxygenated intermediates are produced that decompose to radicals on warming. Ozonation of cyclic acetals by this procedure yields acyl hydrotrioxides that decompose on warming to produce hydroperoxyl radicals, HOO(.). Alkoxyl radicals are spin trapped when mainstream cigarette smoke is bubbled through PBN solutions while acyloxyl radicals are spin trapped friom sidestream smoke. Stable radicals detected in cigarette tar are …

Interactions Of Mefluidide And Bentazon On Red Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Sudabathula Rajaramamohana Rao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The responses of soybeans {Glycine max (L.) Merr. 'Bragg'} and red rice (Oryza sativa L. 'Strawhulled') to postemergence applications of mefluidide {N-{2,4-dimethyl-5-{{(trifluoromethyl)=sulfonyl}amino}phenyl}acetamide} and bentazon {3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide} alone and in combinations were evaluated in greenhouse studies. Soybeans and red rice were tolerant to bentazon, but their heights were reduced by mefluidide. When these two herbicides were combined, soybeans were not injured at any tested rates, but a synergistic interaction occurred that killed red rice. The changes in degradation, uptake, translocation, metabolism, and loss of these two herbicides due to combinations with each other were studied in order to establish the basis …

Thermal And Spatial Ecology Of Three Species Of Water Snakes (Nerodia) In A Louisiana Swamp., Thomas Claud Michot

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Biotelemetry was used to study thermal and spatial relationships in Nerodia fasciata confluens, N. c. cyclopion, and N. r. rhombifera. Twenty snakes were monitored between April 1978 and September 1979 in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Laboratory-determined preferred temperature ranges were compared to environmental temperatures from air, soil, and water to predict thermally optimum microhabitats. Comparison of observed and predicted microhabitats for each observation showed that N. fasciata was found more frequently in the thermally optimum microhabitat than were N. cyclopion and N. rhombifera. Nerodia cyclopion consistently showed thermal nonconformity by altering the relationship between body (BT) and ambient (AT) temperatures so …

Age Differences In Memory For Movement: Effects Of Strategy And Preselection When Ecological Validity Is Varied., Katherine T. Thomas Jan 1981

Age Differences In Memory For Movement: Effects Of Strategy And Preselection When Ecological Validity Is Varied., Katherine T. Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As children mature through the childhood years, motor performance increases in a relatively linear way. This increase in performance is frequently attributed to physical growth factors such as increased height, weight and strength. However, cognitive factors in memory also develop and affect the planning and control of movement. The purpose of these three experiments was to evaluate the developmental increase in strategy use for planning movements and to determine if the motor performance of younger children could be enhanced by inducing strategy use that does not occur spontaneously. The effects of subject selected (preselected) or experimenter selected (constrained) movements was …
