Using58Ni+50Cr and58Ni+54Fe reactions and on-line mass separation, the new isotopes103Sn and105Sn with half-lives of 7±3 s and 31±6 s, respectively, were identified via their beta-delayed proton decays. The relative yields and the possibility of reaching101Sn are discussed. © 1981 Springer-Verlag.

Palynology And Biostratigraphy Of Some Legnite Bearing Sediments From The Dolet Hills And Naborton Formations (Lower Tertiary System) Desoto Parish, Northwest Louisiana, Thomas S. Pavlik Dec 1981

Palynology And Biostratigraphy Of Some Legnite Bearing Sediments From The Dolet Hills And Naborton Formations (Lower Tertiary System) Desoto Parish, Northwest Louisiana, Thomas S. Pavlik

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Palynological analysis of 30 samples from a single well core containing the Chemard Lake Lignite and associated sediments from the Naborton and Dolet Hills formations in northwestern Louisiana provided a miospore assemblage that resembles Paleocene assemblages from other areas of the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains. This suggests a Late Paleocene (Early-Middle Sabinian) Age for these formations. The results from a sample similarity index analysis indicate samples from the succession can be grouped into palynostratigraphic zones. Five different diversity procedures were applied to the data and indicated variation in diversity among the palyno-zones. The presence of a few dinoflagellate cysts …

Frontier Port On The Mississippi: A History Of The Legend Of Natchez Under-The-Hill, 1800-1900, Michael Francis Beard Dec 1981

Frontier Port On The Mississippi: A History Of The Legend Of Natchez Under-The-Hill, 1800-1900, Michael Francis Beard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Natchez Under-the-Hill, from 1800 to 1840 the second leading river port on the Mississippi, played a central role in the economic life of the Old Southwestern frontier. Despite this, it was chiefly known to contemporaries in both America and abroad as a center of intemperance, prostitution, gambling, and violence.

During the antebellum years this image of the Natchez waterfront was a symbol of the Myth of the Wild and Savage West, which assumed Westerners were violent, immoral, and uncivilized. The lawlessness and vice of the port, widely touted in travel journals and newspapers, provided evidence to non-westerners that their perceptions …

The Vertebrate Paleontology Of Late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) Mammalian Sites Of Louisiana, Linda L. Rice Dec 1981

The Vertebrate Paleontology Of Late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) Mammalian Sites Of Louisiana, Linda L. Rice

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis describes the late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) vertebrate paleontology of Louisiana through the use of vertebrates as paleoenvironmental indicators. This method of interpretation is established through morphological description and evaluation, taphonomy, systematic paleontology, and in some cases, the use of modern analogs.

This study compares and contrasts Louisiana with other southeastern states during the late Pleistocene. This comparison shows that Louisiana did not vary significantly from the rest of the southeastern United States during the late Rancholabrean. This work also shows that the most common habitats of Louisiana at this time were open temperate woods, grasslands, and marshes. Geographically, most …

Band Crossing And The Prealignment B(E2) Anomaly In 126Ba, J. P. Draayer, C. S. Han, K. J. Weeks, K. T. Hecht

Faculty Publications

A theoretical interpretation of the reduction in E2 strengths in 126Ba prior to backbending is presented. A shell model basis is built from normal parity orbilals organized into multiplets of a pseudo SU(3) symmetry coupled to h 11 2 configurations restricted to states of seniority zero and two. Within the framework of the model the scattering of a pair of protons from normal parity to the h 11 2 orbital produces band crossing and a corresponding reduction in E2 transition strengths prior to pair alignment which is the principal mechanism of the backbending. © 1981.

Applications Of Fluid Inclusion Techniques To Burial Diagenesis In Carbonate Rock Sequences, Mary Jo Klosterman May 1981

Applications Of Fluid Inclusion Techniques To Burial Diagenesis In Carbonate Rock Sequences, Mary Jo Klosterman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Carbonate cement formed during diagenesis of sedimentary rocks frequently entraps samples of diagenetic fluid as fluid inclusions, which record the pressure and temperature of the fluid at the time of formation. Homogenization of liquid-gas inclusions yields an estimate of the minimum temperature of inclusion and crystal formation; freezing point depressions of liquid inclusions can provide a close approximation of the salinity of the trapped liquid. Homogenization temperatures (T^) and final melting temperatures (Tf) were determined for 222 small (4-15 micron), primary and pseudosecondary, aqueous liquid-gas fluid inclusions in coarse (0.25-3.0 mm) poikilotopic calcite cement. The cement is from the moderately …
