A Mechanistic Study Of Free-Radical Initiation Of Alkene Oxidation By Nitrogen Dioxide., John William Lightsey
A Mechanistic Study Of Free-Radical Initiation Of Alkene Oxidation By Nitrogen Dioxide., John William Lightsey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The reactions of part per million (ppm) levels of nitrogen dioxide with cyclohexene have been studied to serve as a model for the reactions that occur between nitrogen dioxide in smoggy air and unsaturated fatty acids in pulmonary lipids. Previous studies done at high nitrogen dioxide levels were confirmed by these studies with nitrogen dioxide at concentrations of 10,000 ppm and higher. These show that nitrogen dioxide reacts with cyclohexene predominantly by addition to the double bond; in the presence of air or oxygen this addition initiates the autoxidation of the alkene. However, at low ppm levels, nitrogen dioxide reacts …

The Syntheses And Characterization Of Aza Coronands And Cryptands Containing The 2,6-Pyridino And/Or The 1,8-Naphthyridino Subunits., Veronica Katherine Majestic
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The syntheses of coronands and cryptands containing the 2,6-pyridino and 1,8-naphthyridino subunits have been accomplished. These macrocycles may contain only nitrogen heteroatoms while others contain both nitrogen and oxygen heteroatoms. Transition metal complexes have been formed only with the macrocycles which contain strictly nitrogen heteroatoms; no complexes have been found for the macrocycles which contain oxygen and nitrogen atoms. A diprotonated cobalt(II) tetrachloride salt was formed from the dimeric macrocycle which results from the reaction of 2,6-dichloropyridine with N,N-bis-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine. Several analogous systems have also been synthesized. A hexaaza-18-crown-6 analogue has also been synthesized by the treatment of 2,6-bis(chloromethyl)-pyridine with N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine. …
Transient Inelastic Thermal Stresses In A Solid Cylinder With Temperature Dependent Properties., Habib Pour-Mohamadian
Transient Inelastic Thermal Stresses In A Solid Cylinder With Temperature Dependent Properties., Habib Pour-Mohamadian
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Transient temperature distribution in an infinitely long solid cylinder initially at uniform temperature T(,0), subjected to an axisymmetric thermal boundary condition, (immersed in an infinite medium of zero temperature) has been obtained. The mechanical properties of the material are considered to be temperature dependent. Using the available experimental data, an equation for each mechanical property as a function of temperature is obtained. Then, using a numerical method the corresponding transient and residual thermal stresses in a long solid cooling cylinder subjected to a transient axisymmetric temperature distributions are calculated. The residual stresses obtained indicate the same pattern with good agreement …
Numerical Gas Dynamics Of Internal And External Flows In Gun Barrels., Oktay Baysal
Numerical Gas Dynamics Of Internal And External Flows In Gun Barrels., Oktay Baysal
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A computational combined solution to the internal and external flows in gun barrels is devised. A computer code, IEFLOW, is constructed to carry out all the calculations and present a complete package of tables and graphs of the physical property histories. With the input of the initial conditions at the threshold of the barrel, the internal and external flow fields and the simulation of blast is made possible. The flow inside the barrel, which is unsteady, compressible and one dimensional, is solved by a predictor-corrector technique using the method of characteristics. A two step, explicit, finite difference scheme is used …
The States' Rights Speaking Of Oran Milo Roberts 1850-1861: A Study In Agitational Rhetoric., Donna R. Tobias
The States' Rights Speaking Of Oran Milo Roberts 1850-1861: A Study In Agitational Rhetoric., Donna R. Tobias
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
As a spokesman for the Texas states' rights-secession movement, Oran Milo Roberts followed the overriding philosophy of the compact theory of states. His unswerving belief in this principle led him to become the president of the Texas Secession Convention and the axis around which secession revolved in Texas. Through a detailed analysis of Roberts' rhetorical acts from the beginning of the secession movement in 1850 to the secession of the state in 1861, this case study attempts to identify and evaluate the agitational strategies which Roberts utilized. The situation, strategies, and effects of Roberts' speaking and activities are examined in …

X-Ray Crystal Structures Of Some Inorganic, Organometallic, And Organic Natural Product Systems (Terpene, Monoterpene, Sesquiterpene, Irazunolide, Tetracyanonickelate)., Terry Joseph Delord
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The single crystal X-ray structures of eight compounds have been determined representing the Inorganic, Organometallic, and Organic Natural Product classes of molecules. Of the natural product compounds, two varieties of terpenes are represented; monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. The monoterpene, 3-trans,6-trans-dihydroxymenthene (C(,10)H(,18)O(,2)), crystallizes in space group C2 with lattice constants a = 17.837(4), b = 7.113(7), c = 8.096(2) (ANGSTROM), (beta) = 102.17(6)(DEGREES). The structure is described by a disordered hydrogen bonding network extending in three dimensions throughout the crystal. Irazunolide (C(,17)H(,18)O(,5)), based on the eudesmane structure, is a sesquiterpene lactone crystallizing in space group P2(,1)2(,1)2(,1) with lattice constants a = 7.793(1), …
Studies Of Helix Formation In Model Chains, Poly(L-Proline) And Somatostatin (Polyproline)., Jerome Anthony Darsey
Studies Of Helix Formation In Model Chains, Poly(L-Proline) And Somatostatin (Polyproline)., Jerome Anthony Darsey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The studies presented in this work relate to conformational studies of polymers and biopolymers. Polyethylene is used as a model chain to develop a general formalism to characterize helical molecules with varying degrees of flexibility. The average projection of a unit vector along the last bond onto a unit vector along the first bond is the principal quantity calculated for modeling purposes. Behavior of this average projection has been examined for helical chains in which flexibility is introduced by either of two devices: random occurrence of a configuration much different from that required for helix propagation and use of a …
The Catalytic Mechanism Of Thiamine In Enzymatic And Non-Enzymatic Systems: Carbene Chemistry Of The Thiazolium Ring And Novel Intramolecular Nucleophilic Catalysis By The Aminopyrimidinyl Group., Michael Bernard Doughty
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The carbene chemistry of thiazolium salts was demonstrated. First, 5-carbethoxy-3,4-dimethylthiazolium iodide 7 yielded 5,5'-bicarbethoxy-3,3';4,4'-bi-dimethyl-(DELTA)('2,2')-bi-thiazoline 8. Thiazolium salts 3-benzyl-5-carbethoxy-4-methylthiazolium bromide and 3-benzylbenzothiazolium bromide yielded the rearranged dimers 2-(5-carbethoxy-4-methylthiazol-2-yl)-5-carbethoxy-2,3-dibenzyl-4-methylthiazolidine and 2-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-2,3-dibenzylbenzothiazoline, respectively. The O-trityl ether, N-benzyl salt of the thiamine thiazole yielded the corresponding rearranged dimer. Importantly, thiamine yielded the rearranged dimer (cis,trans)-2-{5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-thiazol-2-yl}-2,3-di-{(4-amino-2-methylpyrimidin-5-yl) methyl}-3a-methylperhydrofuro-(2,3-d)thiazole. The mechanism of rearranged dimer formation is through carbene dimerization followed by a 1,3-sigmatropic rearrangement of a benzyl (or a pyrimidinyl-methyl) group. Salt 7 reacted with benzaldehyde in NEt(,3) to yield 2-benzoyl-5-carbethoxy-3,4-dimethyl-(2-H)-thiazoline. Ketone 2-benzoyl-3-methylbenzothiazoline 23 rearranged in acid to 2-(1-hydroxybenzyl)-3-methylbenzothiazolium chloride 24. Salt 24 released benzaldehyde in pyridine, …
Ion-Ion And Ion-Solvent Interactions In The System Sodium-Aluminum Tetraethyl-Benzene-Hmpa., James Harold Medley
Ion-Ion And Ion-Solvent Interactions In The System Sodium-Aluminum Tetraethyl-Benzene-Hmpa., James Harold Medley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The behavior of the system NaAlEt(,4)-benzene-HMPA as a function of the mole ratio HMPA:NaAlEt(,4) has been studied via equivalent conductance measurements, viscosity measurements and ('23)Na, ('27)Al and ('1)H nmr spectroscopy. This system has the property of forming two immiscible liquid phases. Therefore a careful analysis of the dependence of the lower phase volume on the mole ratio was undertaken. Additionally the uptake of benzene in the lower phase can be followed via nmr integration. The volume studies indicate a similarity in behavior of the anionic organoaluminum "liquid clathrate" compounds. The formation of two liquid phases has been related to the …

The Prediction Of Small Business Instability--Loan Noncompliance: A Discriminant Analysis Approach., Charles Thomas Moores
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if a small business' tendency towards loan noncompliance could be ascertained from the business' financial information. By developing linear discriminant models a firm's tendency towards loan noncompliance was accurately determined. For the objectives of this study loan noncompliance was defined as the borrower not complying with the terms of the original loan agreement. Examples of loan noncompliance are: (1) alteration of the loan agreement to the disadvantage of the lending institution, (2) late payment, and missing an interest and/or principal payment. Data for this research was obtained from Robert Morris Associates (RMA) …
A Study Of Moral Development Of Selected Employees In Certain Public Accounting Firms., Guy L. Tull Jr
A Study Of Moral Development Of Selected Employees In Certain Public Accounting Firms., Guy L. Tull Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Little empirical research exists in the area of measuring morality and moral development of business, business people, and business-related professions such as accounting and law. While these professions have Codes of Professional Conduct that state that members must be of high moral character, mechanisms for empirically measuring moral character have, until recently, been non-existent. Through the pioneering research by Lawrence Kohlberg, a moral development testing instrument is now available. The purpose of this study was to measure the level of moral development of auditors in three national ("Big-Eight") accounting firms, utilizing Kohlberg's stage theory of moral development. Eighteen subjects were …

Rate constants for hydrolyses of 2-(dichloroacetoxy)benzoic acid and its four ring-substituted methyl analogs in acidic media at 25(DEGREES)C are given. Rate constants are also given for solvolyses in deuterium oxide an 0.5 deuterium mole fraction solutions of water and deuterium oxide. Solvent isotope effects calculated from these rate constants are given and proton inventory analyses for some of the substrates are presented. The data support a previously proposed hydrolysis mechanism in which carboxylate is participating in the reaction. Rate constants for hydrolyses of 2-(acetoxy)benzoic acid (aspirin), 2-{1-('13)C}(acetoxy)benzoic acid, and 2-{2-('2)H(,3)}(acetoxy)benzoic acid, measured in buffered solutions at pH 5.3 between 25(DEGREES) …
A Comparison Of The Predictive Ability Of Historical Cost And Current Cost Accounting With Regard To The Prediction Of Operating Cash Flow., Ralph Edward Welton Jr
A Comparison Of The Predictive Ability Of Historical Cost And Current Cost Accounting With Regard To The Prediction Of Operating Cash Flow., Ralph Edward Welton Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study provides empirical evidence to support the FASB's contention that current cost data as specified by SFAS No. 33 may better aid financial statements users to assess future cash flows than historical cost financial information. Models derived from the theoretical and empirical literature were used to forecast 1981 operating cash flow. One set of models employed, as explanatory variables, historical cost data while another comparative set employed current cost data. A sample of 361 firms, representing 33 industries, was drawn from the FASB Statement 33 Data Bank. The firms were stratified by industry classification, then randomly assigned to sample …

The primary objective of this study was twofold. First, to examine the information content of quarterly earnings announcements. Second, the effects of firm size, timeliness of earnings announcements, price-earnings ratio, industry, sign, and magnitude of unanticipated earnings on market response were examined. The research procedure employed the market residual analysis technique to determine how the market behaves in response to earnings reports. The research sample consisted of 319 firms representing ten major industries. A total of 1657 quarterly earnings announcements were made by these firms over a two-year period. The data for this study were collected from the Wall Street …
An Empirical Study Of Usefulness And Communicative Ability Of Segment Disclosures Among Sophisticated Users Of Corporate Financial Statements., James Harold Honea
An Empirical Study Of Usefulness And Communicative Ability Of Segment Disclosures Among Sophisticated Users Of Corporate Financial Statements., James Harold Honea
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research was designed to provide empirical evidence concerning the effects disclosing different levels of segment data has on the decision making performance of sophisticated users (Chartered Financial Analysts) of published corporate financial statements. The primary surrogate for influence on decision making was the existence of statistically different net earnings projections. To accomplish the research objective CFAs were supplied with financial statements of a hypothetical company disclosing varying levels (six) of segment disclosures and were asked to predict corporate earnings for 1981 and to indicate the range in which they were 95% confident true corporate earnings would fall. Five hypotheses …
Luminescence Studies: Luminescence Of Aqueous Ionic Solutions; Temperature Dependence Of The Phosphorescence Of Phenanthene In Ethanol - Effects Of Gases., Terrence Lenoir Mathers
Luminescence Studies: Luminescence Of Aqueous Ionic Solutions; Temperature Dependence Of The Phosphorescence Of Phenanthene In Ethanol - Effects Of Gases., Terrence Lenoir Mathers
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Part I. Luminescence of Aqueous Ionic Solutions. An anomolous luminescence of aqueous solutions of I('-), Br('-), OH('-) etc. is observed and appears to be characteristic of the solvent. The emission of a KBr solution is greatly reduced by purification of the KBr. However, upon addition of acids, this emission reappears. Since all of the ions involved are known to have charge transfer to solvent (CTTS) transitions, the luminescence is postulated to be due to the recombination of H(,3)O('+) and e('-). Hydroxide and hydrosulfide appear to be a special case and may be transferring a hydrogen atom to the water. Discussions …
Numerical Modeling Of The Internal Ballistics Of A Gas Gun., Ameziane Harhad
Numerical Modeling Of The Internal Ballistics Of A Gas Gun., Ameziane Harhad
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A numerical procedure is applied to three principal flow models of a gas gun, the discharge chamber, the main chamber, and the barrel chamber. In the first two models, an explicit method, the second order MacCormack scheme, is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional (axisymmetric), time dependent, compressible flow. The fluid is assumed to be a perfect gas. The flow boundaries may be arbitrary curved and time dependent. Transformations have been used to map the physical space into a computational space with uniform grid spacing. A grid generation surface has been achieved for various wall shapes. The third …
A Finite Element Analysis Of High Temperature Fatigue And Creep At A Stress Concentration., Faysal Abdou Kolkailah
A Finite Element Analysis Of High Temperature Fatigue And Creep At A Stress Concentration., Faysal Abdou Kolkailah
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Bodner-Partom model of nonlinear time-dependent material behavior was incorporated into a finite element code to predict the strain response at the notch root of an Inconel 718 specimen subjected to cyclic tension-compression at 649(DEGREES)C. A numerical minimization technique was developed to establish the parameters in the Bodner-Partom model. This technique was applied to creep and stress strain data obtained from button-head test specimens tested at 649(DEGREES)C. These parameters were found to be in general close agreement with those obtained by other investigators. The test specimen for the experimental phase of this research was double notched with an elastic stress …
Spectroscopy And Photochemistry Of Aromatic And Cyclic Beta-Diketones., Felipe Antonio Pascal Hamilton
Spectroscopy And Photochemistry Of Aromatic And Cyclic Beta-Diketones., Felipe Antonio Pascal Hamilton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
(beta)-Diketones exist in a tautomeric equilibrium between the enol and the keto forms. The enol form is the most stable because of the formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond. (beta)-Diketones in solution at 77K exhibit changes in their absorption and phosphorescence spectra upon irradiation with a powerful UV visible source. The changes observed in the molecule result from rupture of the intramolecular hydrogen bond. Once the hydrogen bond has been broken a distribution of conformers of the enol is possible. The formation of a negative ion can also result from the irradiation and a distribution of conformers of the negative …
The Southern Educational Oratory Of William Preston Johnston, 1880-1899., Dinah Daniel Richard
The Southern Educational Oratory Of William Preston Johnston, 1880-1899., Dinah Daniel Richard
