A Temporal View Of The Turnover Process: Application Of A Repeated Measures Design To Two Models Of Nurse Turnover., Albert Willard Holland Jr Jan 1983

A Temporal View Of The Turnover Process: Application Of A Repeated Measures Design To Two Models Of Nurse Turnover., Albert Willard Holland Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The principal objective of the present research was to examine Mobley's (1982) contention that a dynamic experimental design is necessary in order to advance our understanding of the cognitive and behavioral events which precede turnover. The one aspect of Mobley's contention tested here was the extent to which a repeated measures design contributes to the predictive power of existing models of turnover. A second objective was to conduct a competitive test between the Mobley, Horner and Hollingsworth (1978) and the Price and Mueller (1981b) models of nurse turnover. Four non-profit community general hospitals and two government-owned general hospitals provided the …

A History Of Louisiana's Rural Electric Cooperatives, 1937-1983., Gary Alan Donaldson Jan 1983

A History Of Louisiana's Rural Electric Cooperatives, 1937-1983., Gary Alan Donaldson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Rural Electrification Administration was created by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. There were attempts at rural electrification prior to that date, but FDR's program, as part of the New Deal, was the beginning of the modern system. The REA was put into operation by Morris L. Cooke, and expanded by John Carmody and Harry Slattery through 1944. The Fifties ushered in a conservative presidential administration that opposed organizations such as co-ops, and, consequently, funds were cut. But on the local level, co-ops continued to grow. The Sixties brought with it financial cooperation from Washington, and many co-ops around the …

The Regulation Of Gene Expression During The Aerobic Germination Of Mucor Racemosus Sporangiospores., John Edgar Linz Jan 1983

The Regulation Of Gene Expression During The Aerobic Germination Of Mucor Racemosus Sporangiospores., John Edgar Linz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was undertaken to investigate the regulation of gene expression during the aerobic germination of Mucor racemosus sporangiospores. Sucrose density gradient analysis of spore extracts revealed that the percentage of ribosomes associated with mRNA increased from 23% in dormant spores to 85% after 10 min of germination. L-{('14)C}leucine was immediately incorporated at a rapid rate into protein of a leucine auxotroph, whereas {('3)H}uracil or {('32)P}-phosphate were not incorporated into RNA at a significant rate until 20 min after the addition of medium. Newly synthesized RNA did not appear in polysomes until at least 30 min. Polyadenylated RNA, comprising 3.3% …

Evidence For An Outer Membrane - Association Precursor Of The Extracellular Protease Produced By Serratia Marcescens., Laura Robin Liss

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Serratia marcescens LRL781, a gram-negative bacterium, produces an extracellular protease. Evidence is provided for an outer membrane-associated, larger molecular weight, enzymatically inactive precursor of the protease. Antiserum was prepared against the extracellular protease, which was purified from the supernatant fraction of S. marcescens LRL781 cultures. Column adsorption of the antiprotease serum was performed using a slurry of live cells and cellulose. The resulting effluent was serologically inactive against protease preparations and chromium chloride-coupled protease-rabbit erythrocytes. Whole washed cells agglutinated in the presence of the antiserum. Cells were uniformly labeled with ferritin conjugated goat anti-rabbit IgG, indicating that the protease precursor …

Test diets containing ground beef extended with 0, 10, 20 and 30% ISP were fed to Single Comb White Leghorn chicks and 28 days to determine the effect of isolated soy protein (ISP) on the availability of copper naturally present in meat. Copper content of the test diets decreased with increasing levels of ISP, ranging from 6.89 (+OR-) 0.17 ppm to 2.09 (+OR-) 0.12 ppm. Mean feed consumption per diet also decreased with increasing ISP levels as did the amount of copper consumed per bird. Although the mg copper consumed per bird decreased from diet I to diet IV, the …

The Impact Of Sompa Elp Scores On Special Education Evaluation And Placement., Alan Lesley Taylor Jan 1983

The Impact Of Sompa Elp Scores On Special Education Evaluation And Placement., Alan Lesley Taylor

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The impact of the use of SOMPA Estimated Learning Potential (ELP) scores as a substitute for traditional IQ scores was examined as it affected students evaluated for special education in a large metropolitan school system. SOMPA is the System of Multicultural Pluralistic Assessment, an evaluation package developed by Jane Mercer (1979) to address concerns about bias in assessment of minority students and particularly to remove "unfair" labels of mental retardation. ELP scores represent IQ scores adjusted for the effects of sociocultural background and compared only to ethnic peer norms, with the general effect being to raise estimates of intellectual potential …

Strangers In The Land: The Southern Clergy And The Economic Mind Of The Old South., Kenneth Moore Startup Jan 1983

Strangers In The Land: The Southern Clergy And The Economic Mind Of The Old South., Kenneth Moore Startup

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The antebellum southern clergy has often been characterized as narrow-minded and reactionary with little or no social vision and with little or no commitment to social reformation. My study, which is based upon an expansive survey of the sermons and religious writings of protestant slave state ministers, reveals instead an insightful, critical, and outspoken clergy determined to change southern society; principally to turn southerners from materialism and greed to spirituality and altruism. In their attempt to reform southern society, they condemned explicitly what they considered the ostentation, arrogance, and selfishness of the upper classes and called for a more equitable …

One group was requested to take the MMPI under instructions to malinger psychopathology. Another group was instructed to take the MMPI under instructions to deny or conceal any …

Water Budget, Benthological Characterization, And Simulation Of Aquatic Material Flows In A Louisiana Freshwater Swamp., Fred Hal Sklar Jan 1983

Water Budget, Benthological Characterization, And Simulation Of Aquatic Material Flows In A Louisiana Freshwater Swamp., Fred Hal Sklar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A two-year survey of the aquatic plants and invertebrates in the Des Allemands Swamp was designed to determine the ecological effects of altered hydrologic regimes. The aquatic invertebrate community in an impoundment was compared with a control site subject to "normal" overflow flooding and a crawfish farm where high rates of water exchange are maintained by a system of pumps and artificial levees. Swamp hydrology for the years 1914-1980 was modeled using Thornthwaite and Mather components. Time-series analysis found no evidence of any long-term cyclical behavior. High evapotranspiration and drainage during summer decrease water levels to zero in natural swamp …

Platonic Economic Theory: The Economics Of Moderation., Kenneth Neal Townsend Jan 1983

Platonic Economic Theory: The Economics Of Moderation., Kenneth Neal Townsend

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation analyzes the contributions to the economic analysis of welfare made by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. Heretofore unexamined, these contributions demonstrate the importance of the development of notions of sufficiency and moderation as integral parts of welfare analysis. This dissertation also examines the significance of Plato's method of inquiry into matters of social science for contemporary economic analysis. In particular, the importance of metamathematical induction for the acquisition of knowledge of the values upon which welfare depend is analyzed in the form that it is employed in Plato's dialogues. This analysis is conducted to the end that economists …

The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii Jan 1983

The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Surrey provides an excellent case study of the role of justices of the peace in national and county politics in England during the years 1473-1570. Ample documentation exists in the central government records and a rich local collection, the Loseley MSS., and the availability of similar studies for the bordering counties of Hampshire, Kent, and Sussex allows fruitful comparisons. Moreover, though the shire was pulled in many directions by overlapping political and ecclesiastical jurisdictions (e.g., shrievalty, lieutenancy, diocese) and by various regional affinities, there was in Surrey a distinct political county community, the integrity of which all of the Tudors …

The Beta-Fructofuranosidase Of Kluyveromyces Fragilis And Its Use In Inulin Hydrolysis., Wesley Earl Workman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Inulin, a polyfructan, is found as the reserve carbohydrate in the roots and tubers of various plants. The (beta)-fructofuranosidase (inulase) from the yeast Kluyveromyces fragilis is of interest because of its industrial potential in fructose syrup and alcohol production from inulin containing plants. The enzyme was purified and characterized with respect to its physical and kinetic parameters. The relationship between the enzyme and the yeast cell wall was also investigated. It was found that the inulase of Kluyveromyces fragilis could be immobilized in the yeast cells by glutaraldehyde treatment. Although the exact nature of the immobilization is not fully understood …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The potential environmental impacts of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) contaminated sediments were studied with emphasis placed on short- and long-term leaching and sediment conditions that affect mobilization. Under anaerobic conditions, arsenate {As(V)} was reduced to arsenite {As(III)} in a wide range of sediments. In anaerobic Texas City sediment slurries, 70% of added As(V) was recovered as water soluble As(III) following three weeks of incubation. Formation of organic As following addition of As(V) to anaerobic sediments was also demonstrated. Short-term leaching was conducted with anaerobically incubated unamended and As amended sediments using either distilled or saline water. In both amended …

Three-Cavity Superconducting Oscillator For Gravity Wave Research., Isidoro Enrico Campisi Jan 1983

Three-Cavity Superconducting Oscillator For Gravity Wave Research., Isidoro Enrico Campisi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The properties and performance of a three-cavity tunnel diode oscillator operating at 600 MHz to be used at cryogenic temperature for gravitational radiation detection are described. We have analyzed the theoretical properties of the stabilization scheme, linking the performance of the oscillator to the system's parameters, namely resonators' quality factors and cavity coupling coefficients. A method which enables one to indirectly determine the Q's and couplings for the system by pure frequency measurements of hysteretic frequency jumps was developed and used. The properties of tunnel diodes used as active elements in cavity oscillators are discussed, as well as the design …

Wind-Driven, Near-Bottom Currents Over The West Louisiana Inner Continental Shelf., Richard Larry Crout Jan 1983

Wind-Driven, Near-Bottom Currents Over The West Louisiana Inner Continental Shelf., Richard Larry Crout

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Forcing mechanisms and water column response over the West Louisiana Inner Continental Shelf (WLICS) are investigated at various temporal and spatial scales. The major mechanisms that have an effect on shallow-water currents over the WLICS are winds, runoff from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers, and circulation of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Summer wind stress values are low and currents generally meander over the inner shelf during this period. A shift in the direction of the regional wind stress in late June causes a reversal in the current direction over the west Louisiana shelf. Autumn currents are primarily westward in …

Models For The Economic Allocation Of Sampling Inspection Effort In Multi-Stage Production Systems., Hassan Dabbaghi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Appropriate inspection and control are significant components of production systems. Many products are manufactured in multistage production lines. At each stage the process can produce defective units. In order to produce finished products with desired quality in an economical way, considerations must be given to the explicit costs of inspection, repair, processing and disposal associated with particular levels of control and inspection. In this dissertation models and solution techniques are developed for simultaneous selection of sampling inspection plans and manufacturing operations control levels within multistage production systems. Per unit expected minimum cost of output quality, which satisfies specified consumer's and …
