Competitive Environment, Business Strategy, And Organization Structure: An Analysis Of Firm Performance., Masoud Hemmasi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research attempts to develop and empirically test an integrative model of business economic performance. The research framework includes certain concepts and relationships that emanate from the literature in Industrial Organization Economics, Business Policy, and Organization Theory. In general, the key tenet of the study is threefold: (a) that there are industry differences in types of challenges confronting top level management; (b) that strategic and organizational responses that different environmental challenges elicit are quite different and somewhat predictable; and (c) that the combination of the environmental, strategic, and organizational characteristics of the organizations affect their economic performance. The sample for …

Forty-five male alcoholic …
Some Relationships Between Crop Damage Inflicted By The Sugarcane Borer, Diatraea Saccharalis (F.), And Selected Plant Diseases (Louisiana)., Emmanuel Oludele Ogunwolu
Some Relationships Between Crop Damage Inflicted By The Sugarcane Borer, Diatraea Saccharalis (F.), And Selected Plant Diseases (Louisiana)., Emmanuel Oludele Ogunwolu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A 3-fold difference (P < 0.05) was found in a 5-replication split plot comparison of % yield loss due to ratoon stunting disease (RSD) alone in contrast to that due to the disease in combination with sugarcane borer (SCB), Diatraea saccharalis (F.), damage in 1st stubble sugarcane. The research plan utilized differential levels of SCB damage as whole plots and a factorial combination of 2 levels of RSD (0 vs 63%) and 2 types of seed cane ( 35% SCB bored internodes) as subplots. Based on the plant cane data, a highly significant negative correlation r = -0.82, was found between SCB damage and cane weight. Loss in sugar production due to 55% SCB bored internodes was 24.4%. The association of simulated or actual SCB injury with stalk rots, particularly Colletotrichum falcatum Went, caused from 9.2-34.1% reduction in germination, and as much as 2.5 metric tons/ha loss in sugar production. Excepting SCB control, a survey spanning 2 years of sugarcane management practices among producers in 3 geographic areas of Louisiana showed substantial variability in the efficacy of control tactics applied against weeds and RSD, with effective suppression of weeds in sugarcane being the most inconsistent and difficult to achieve. These results indicate the need for an integrated approach to managing several components of pest complexes, disease, weeds, and insects in Louisiana sugarcane.
Bacteriological And Toxigenic Studies On Vibrio Species Isolated From The Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) And The Purification Of Toxic Factors Produced By Vibrio Fluvialis (Louisiana)., Susan Lynne Payne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Eleven cases of cholera occurred in Louisiana in 1978 and except for an isolated case in Texas in 1973, this was the first cholera outbreak in the United States since 1911. The source of the infectious agent was traced to the consumption of crabs, a finding which had adverse effects on the crab industry in Louisiana. During 1979 and 1980 blue crabs were examined bacteriologically for the presence of Vibrio cholerae, the etiological agent of Asiatic cholera, and other pathogenic Vibrio species. Four hundred-eighteen V. cholerae isolates were recovered from crab feces and 144 V. cholerae were recovered from hemolymph …

Deltaic Sedimentation In Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana., Ivor Llewellyn Van Heerden
Deltaic Sedimentation In Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana., Ivor Llewellyn Van Heerden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A new Mississippi delta--now in the subaerial growth phase--is building in Atchafalaya Bay, south-central Louisiana, as the result of a natural upstream di-version. Early studies of this event documented gross accretion in Atchafalaya Bay. The present study focuses on subaerial delta lobe responses, stratigraphic development, and sedimentation processes that are incorporated into a model for delta growth. A sedimentological research program undertaken in the eastern half of the Atchafalaya delta has shown that two distinct stages of subaerial delta response are recognizable. The first (younger) re-sponse consists of channel extension, bifurcation, and development of sinuous overbank channels. A latter, more …
The Interrelationships Between Organizational Communication, Organizational Climate, And Job Satisfaction In A Local Government Agency., William Chambliss Sharbrough Iii
The Interrelationships Between Organizational Communication, Organizational Climate, And Job Satisfaction In A Local Government Agency., William Chambliss Sharbrough Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The interrelationships between three multivariate concepts: Organizational communication, organizational climate, and job satisfaction were studied in a local government agency. Demographic data were also studied as they, as a group, related to the three multivariate concepts. Questionnaires were collected from 175 of the 220 employees. Canonical analysis was utilized to analyze the respondents' perceptions of the three concepts and to determine their relationships to the demographic data set. Organizational climate significantly correlated (p < 0.001) with job satisfaction. Only very small, but significant (p < 0.01) redundancy was found between the two concepts. Organizational communication and organizational climate were significantly correlated (p < 0.001). Redundancy analysis indicated that small to moderate redundancies are shared between the concepts for the sample under study. Organizational communication and job satisfaction also exhibited significant correlation (p < 0.001). Redundancy analysis indicated that communication explains a small but significant (p < 0.05) amount of the variance in job satisfaction. However, job satisfaction did not not explain a significant amount of the variance in the communication variable set. For each of the canonical analyses studied, some of the values of the loadings on the components possessed positive signs while others possessed negative signs. Thus, the direction of the relationships between the three concepts remains unclear. Canonical analysis of demographic data and each of the three multivariate concepts was undertaken to determine whether the demographic makeup of the sample was affecting the relationships between the concepts. No significant relationship was found between demographics and organizational climate at the p < 0.05 level. Canonical correlations between the demographic data set and the communication data set were significant beyond p < 0.01. Redundancy analysis indicated that demographics did not explain a significant amount of the variance in communication (p < 0.05). The reverse relationship was significant at p < 0.01, thus clouding the question of the importance of demographics in explaining variance in the communication set. Canonical analysis of the demographic/satisfaction relationship was also significant (p < 0.01). Redundancies yielded similar mixed findings as in the demographics/communication relationship. Conclusions from the analysis were drawn. Limitations to the usefulness of the findings were discussed. Finally, suggestions for further research were made.

The Diversification Service By A Multinational Corporation To Its Shareholders., Ho Chull Yang
The Diversification Service By A Multinational Corporation To Its Shareholders., Ho Chull Yang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In perfect capital markets, optimal investment decisions of a firm involve no incentive for a firm to diversify operations. However, in an imperfect capital market where homemade portfolio diversification incurs higher cost or faces restrictions, operational diversification of a firm may be beneficial to its shareholders. A substantial amount of empirical evidence has supported the hypothesis that U.S. investors would have higher risk adjusted performance through international portfolio investment. In reality, however, some major barriers to international diversification have prevented U.S. investors from diversifying internationally. Consequently, it can be expected that multinationality of a firm would be beneficial to investors. …
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …
School Lunch Consumption In Terms Of Serving Method., Faye Anne Blanchard Robichaux
School Lunch Consumption In Terms Of Serving Method., Faye Anne Blanchard Robichaux
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the "offer versus serve" method on school lunch consumption by students in grades 1-3 when nutrition-related achievement of students was similar. This method allows students to decline two of the five food items. The sample included students in grades 1-3 in two public schools in neighboring parishes, Lafourche and Assumption. The Lafourche Parish school was using the "offer versus serve" method, while the Assumption Parish school was using the traditional method of serving lunch. Nutrition achievement of students in both schools was determined; the mean scores of students in …
Testing Standard Modern Paragraph Theories (Becker, Christensen, Rodgers)., Thomas Haskell Utley
Testing Standard Modern Paragraph Theories (Becker, Christensen, Rodgers)., Thomas Haskell Utley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study tests the relative effectiveness of the standard modern paragraph theories of A. L. Becker, Francis Christensen, and Paul C. Rodgers, Jr., three major theorists contributing more sophisiticated explanations of the form of paragraphs than that of Alexander Bain, whose theory as summarized in the familiar principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis has dominated textbook explanations of paragraphing since the late nineteenth century. In this test the three theories have been applied to fourteen selected professional essays appearing in six of the best-selling composition readers. Of these essays, seven, designated as classical, are written by the most frequently anthologized …

Social And Demographic Factors Influencing Job Mobility Aspirations In An Industrializing Rural Community., James Augustine Butler Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The rapid industrialization of nonmetropolitan areas and small towns has been a relatively recent phenomenon. The economic impact of such development has been well documented. However, not much is known about the social effects of industrial development in rural communities--particularly as related to attitudes of the indigenous population. The objective of this study was to determine the association between several independent variables (type of employment, age, sex, race, education, and income) and job mobility aspirations of adult employees in industry and others in the surrounding area. Job mobility aspirations in this study were defined by a scale comprised of eight …

The Effectiveness Of Video Technology In Safety Training At An Industrial Site., Robert Steven Miller
The Effectiveness Of Video Technology In Safety Training At An Industrial Site., Robert Steven Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Industry has long held to the belief that accidents are caused and they can be prevented. To support this belief, industry in the United States has allocated vast resources for accident prevention. The rationale for this allocation of resources rests on the concern for employees' well-being, federal and state regulations, and the profit incentive. In order to test the most feasible and effective program to generate safety awareness and teach specific safety skills, a system of daily reinforcement using an in-plant cable tablevision capability was conceptualized, designed, implemented and tested. This study presents the findings for the Safety Minutes program …
Electronic Structure Of Iron., Diola Bagayoko
Electronic Structure Of Iron., Diola Bagayoko
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A survey of previous theoretical and experimental works on iron in some Bravais lattices and at various temperature and pressures shows this 3d transition metal to exhibit a wealth of allotropic transformations and to possess, along with some of its alloys, peculiar magnetic properties in the face centered cubic (FCC) phase. We present an ab-initio self-consistent spin polarized band structure study of this metal in the body (BCC) and face centered cubic lattices at absolute zero and at various atomic volumes. Our calculations employed gaussian basis functions in a LCAO scheme and used the RSK local density potential. In contrast …

One hundred and two livestock producers were interviewed--72 who were members of SODEPRA and 32 who were not. The data from the field study were coded onto computer sheets and transferred to punched cards and percentages and Chi-Square Values were calculated. The major dependent variable, membership in SODEPRA, was related to the independent variables in the study. Chi-Square values were used to determine if there was a significant …
Magnetic Susceptibility Of Nickel., Arun Kumar Chatterjee
Magnetic Susceptibility Of Nickel., Arun Kumar Chatterjee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Using density and functional theory, expressions for the longitudinal and transverse spin susceptibility of ferromagnetic metals have been derived in the local density approximation. The self consistent calculation of these susceptibilities necessitates the inversion of some infinite dimensional matrices, which have been done analytically using tight binding wave function for the 3d electrons. This amounted to a transformation from a Fourier representation to an orbital representation. This method is then applied for nickel using a semi-empirical band structure. In the light of these approximations it proved worthwhile to introduce some adjustable parameters to describe the electron interactions. In the transverse …

The Vroom-Yetton Model Of Decision Making: An Empirical Evaluation In Applied Settings., Elizabeth Shoenfelt Erffmeyer
The Vroom-Yetton Model Of Decision Making: An Empirical Evaluation In Applied Settings., Elizabeth Shoenfelt Erffmeyer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A test of the validity of the Vroom-Yetton model of decision making was conducted using four types of organizational leaders: nurses, university administrators, managers from business and industry, and fraternity and sorority presidents. The present study was designed to avoid some of the methodological deficiencies of previous attempts to validate the model. Specifically, the present research incorporated two important characteristics: the use of naturally occurring decisions that were currently being confronted by the leaders and the use of objective, independent measures of the decision method used and the effectiveness, quality, and acceptance of the decision. The forty-two leaders were each …
The Mediational Role Of Social Influence In The Perception Of Exertion., Charles Jeffrey Hardy
The Mediational Role Of Social Influence In The Perception Of Exertion., Charles Jeffrey Hardy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two experiments are reported that investigate the mediational role of social influence in the self-perception of exertion. In Experiment 1, subjects performed three 15 min trials on a cycle ergometer at 25%, 50%, and 75% of VO(,2) max, both in the presence of another performer (a coactor) and alone. The results indicated that subjects reported lower RPEs when performing with another, particularly at the moderate (50%) intensity. In Experiment 2, subjects performed one 15 min trial at 50% of VO(,2) max, both alone and in the presence of another performer (coactor) exhibiting nonverbal "cues" that the work was either extremely …
The Methodological Foundations Of Law And Economics., Will Carrington Heath
The Methodological Foundations Of Law And Economics., Will Carrington Heath
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Today there is a burgeoning "new" law and economics literature which extends the application of economic principles virtually across the board. The essence of the "new" law and economics is value (or wealth) maximization, which means exploiting economic resources in such a way that value--human satisfaction as measured by willingness and ability to pay--is maximized. Value maximization has become essential in both explanative and reformative analyses of the law. This new science of law is not without its critics. They include economists, especially those of the Austrian and American Institutionalist schools, as well as various legal theorists and practitioners not …
The Effects Of Acute Dehydration On The Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Cycle Ergometer Exercise., Penelope England
The Effects Of Acute Dehydration On The Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Cycle Ergometer Exercise., Penelope England
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Much of the previous research concerning dehydration and performance has centered around prolonged submaximal work while seemingly little attention has been focused upon short term incremental exercise. Numerous investigators have suggested that dehydration may alter carbohydrate metabolism in muscle. Theoretically, altered glycolytic flux in exercising muscle could result in a change in the rate of blood lactate (La) accumulation, and thus shift the anaerobic threshold. Anaerobic threshold (AT(,La)) has been formally defined as the oxygen uptake (V(,O(,2))) at which there is a systematic increase in blood La. Additionally, the AT(,La) has been estimated from a nonlinear increase in expired ventilation …

Survival Of Vibrio Cholerae, Biotype E1 Tor, Serotype Inaba In Seafoods., Arthur Hinton Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The D values of Vibrio cholerae in oyster and shrimp meat homogenate were determined at 49(DEGREES), 54(DEGREES), 60(DEGREES), 66(DEGREES), 71(DEGREES), 77(DEGREES), and 82(DEGREES)C. In oyster homogenates, the D values in minutes were 4.7 at 49(DEGREES)C, < 0.35 at 54(DEGREES)C, < 0.35 at 60(DEGREES)C, < 0.33 at 66(DEGREES)C, < 0.30 at 71(DEGREES)C, < 0.29 at 77(DEGREES)C, and < 0.24 at 82(DEGREES)C. In shrimp homogenates, the D values in minutes were 9.17 at 49(DEGREES)C, < 0.43 at 54(DEGREES)C, < 0.39 at 60(DEGREES)C, < 0.32 at 66(DEGREES)C, < 0.31 at 71(DEGREES)C, < 0.30 at 77(DEGREES), and < 0.28 at 82(DEGREES)C. Whole oysters, inoculated with 10('6) V. cholerae/gram, were cooked in boiling water (100(DEGREES)C) or in hot oil (191(DEGREES)C) for one minute. Whole shrimp, inoculated with 10('6) V. cholerae were cooked in boiling water (100(DEGREES)C) or in steam (100(DEGREES)C) for 10 minutes. Vibrio cholerae was not isolated from the cooked oysters or shrimp. Sterile and unsterile shrimp, oyster, crab, and crayfish meat homogenates were inoculated with 10('7) V. cholerae/g. The homogenates were treated with 0, 25, 50, or 100 krad and stored at 4(DEGREES), 0(DEGREES), or -8(DEGREES)C for 21 days. No V. cholerae were isolated from any of the homogenates treated with 100 krad. Vibrio cholerae was able to survive longer in the sterile oyster, crab and crayfish homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) and 0(DEGREES)C than in the unsterile homogenates stored at the same temperatures. The organism was able to survive longer in the unsterile shrimp homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) and 0(DEGREES)C than in the sterile homogenates stored at the same temperature. At -8(DEGREES)C, survival time was usually longer in the unsterile seafood homogenates than in the sterile seafood homogenates stored at -8(DEGREES)C. Due to the retardation of competitive inhibition the organism was usually able to survive longer in the unsterile homogenates stored at -8(DEGREES)C than in the unsterile homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) or 0(DEGREES)C.
