A Harnack Estimate For Real Normal Surface Singularities, William A. Adkins Jan 1984

A Harnack Estimate For Real Normal Surface Singularities, William A. Adkins

Faculty Publications

According to Harnack’s theorem the number of topological components of the real part of a nonsingular projective curve X defined over R is at most g(X) + 1, where g(X) is the genus of X. The purpose of the present paper is to present two estimates which can be considered analogs of Harnack’s theorem for normal surface singularities defined over R. © 1984 by Pacific Journal of Mathematics.

Incompressible Planar Surfaces In 3-Manifolds, C. Mc A. Gordon, R. A. Litherland Jan 1984

Incompressible Planar Surfaces In 3-Manifolds, C. Mc A. Gordon, R. A. Litherland

Faculty Publications

Let M be an orientable 3-manifold and T a torus component of ∂M. We show that the boundary-slopes of incompressible, boundary-incompressible planar surfaces (P,∂P)⊂(M,T) are pairwise within distance 4; in particular, there are at most six such boundary-slopes. A corollary is that, for any knot K in S3, at most six Dehn surgeries on K can yield a reducible 3-manifold. © 1984.

On Minor-Minimally-Connected Matroids, James G. Oxley Jan 1984

On Minor-Minimally-Connected Matroids, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

By a well-known result of Tutte, if e is an element of a connected matroid M, then either the deletion or the contraction of e from M is connected. If, for every element of M, exactly one of these minors is connected, then we call M minor-minimally-connected. This paper characterizes such matroids and shows that they must contain a number of two-element circuits or cocircuits. In addition, a new bound is proved on the number of 2-cocircuits in a minimally connected matroid. © 1984.

On Singleton 1-Rounded Sets Of Matroids, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper is to show that there are exactly eight connected matroids N with the property that if M is a connected matroid having N as a minor and x is an element of M, then M has a minor isomorphic to N which contains x in its ground set. © 1984.

A Note On The Critical Problem For Matroids, Takao Asano, Takao Nishizeki, Nobuji Saito, James Oxley Jan 1984

A Note On The Critical Problem For Matroids, Takao Asano, Takao Nishizeki, Nobuji Saito, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let M be a matroid representable over GF(q) and S be a subset of its ground set. In this note we prove that S is maximal with the property that the critical exponent c(M|S; q) does not exceed k if and only if S is maximal with the property that c(M · S) ≤ k. In addition, we show that, for regular matroids, the corresponding result holds for the chromatic number. © 1984, Academic Press Inc. (London) Limited. All rights reserved.

Mutagenesis In Drosophila Melanogaster. I. Scheduled Synthesis Of Nuclear And Mitochondrial Dna And Unscheduled Dna Synthesis. Ii. Dosimetry Studies Using Phosphorus-33. Iii. Molecular Analysis Of Induced Mutations At The Adh Locus (Alcohol Dehydrogenase, Restriction, Cloning, Southern, Blotting)., Mark Richard Kelley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Presented here are three distinct, but interwoven areas of mutation research and molecular genetics using Drosophila melanogaster as the test organism. The first section describes the characterization of the DNA replication process and DNA repair in the oocyte. This involved sex-linked recessive lethal tests on ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) treated females and unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) studies involving EMS, methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) and N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU). Oocytes were positive for UDS with EMS and MMS in a DNA repair competent strain and negative in excision repair deficient strains. ENU was negative in a DNA repair competent strain. Since UDS is not quantitative …

George Vandenhoff, Nineteenth Century Elocutionist In America (Public Reader, Actor, "Art Of Elocution"; England; New York)., Bill Jaye Schooley Jan 1984

George Vandenhoff, Nineteenth Century Elocutionist In America (Public Reader, Actor, "Art Of Elocution"; England; New York)., Bill Jaye Schooley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three generations of Vandenhoffs were among featured players in theatres of both America and England for over a century, 1808 through 1913. George Vandenhoff, the subject of this study, was the eldest son of the accomplished British tragedian, John Vandenhoff. Lauded in England, George accepted a theatrical booking in New York in 1842 and later became a resident of that city. Dissatisfied with changing trends in the theatre and perceiving a growing interest in public readings of literature, Vandenhoff ultimately turned his attention from the actor's stage to the reader's platform. One of the first to introduce Shakespearean readings, he …

The Stabilization Of The Effective Exchange Rates Of The Less Developed Countries Under Alternative Exchange Rate Arrangements., Shahruz Mohtadi-Haghighi Jan 1984

The Stabilization Of The Effective Exchange Rates Of The Less Developed Countries Under Alternative Exchange Rate Arrangements., Shahruz Mohtadi-Haghighi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study theoretically and empirically investigated the movements in the effective exchange rate indices (ERIs) of six less developed countries (LDCs) during the period of generalized floating of major currencies. Given the objective of stabilizing the ERI, four exchange rate arrangements were considered. First, a policy of continuing to fix the value of the domestic currency to the U.S. dollar. Second, a policy of stabilizing the LDC's ERI by changing the value of the domestic currency vis-a-vis the dollar. Third, pegging the domestic currency to the Special Drawing Right (SDR) basket of currencies. Fourth, stabilizing the ERI under an SDR …

Female Labor Force Participation And Fertility In Nigeria: A Study Of Lagos., Amon Okechukwu Okpala Jan 1984

Female Labor Force Participation And Fertility In Nigeria: A Study Of Lagos., Amon Okechukwu Okpala

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Much attention has been given to the relation between population growth and economic development, and one important aspect of this question is the link between fertility and female labor force participation. Variations in the female labor force participation and fertility relationships have been explained by the maternal role incompatibility hypothesis, which states that an inverse relationship occurs between women's work and fertility only when the roles of worker and mother conflict. Substantial amount of empirical studies done have supported this hypothesis. This hypothesis implies that a negative relationship between female employment and fertility will depend on the degree that they …

The primary objective of this study was to determine the ability of different subsets of information under the Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 33 (SFAS 33), historical cost/constant dollar (HC/CD), current cost (CC), and current cost constant dollar (CC/CD), to predict the changes in stock prices as compared to that of HC information. The study was carried out using the data available for the years 1979-1981. The test period was the eleven weeks surrounding the issuance dates of the firms' annual reports which was approximated by using the date of annual earnings announcement that appeared in the public media …

Fundamental Photoemission Studies On Semiconductor Electrolyte Junctions (Solvated Electrons)., Ricardo Enrique Borjas Jan 1984

Fundamental Photoemission Studies On Semiconductor Electrolyte Junctions (Solvated Electrons)., Ricardo Enrique Borjas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Photoelectron emission currents from P-GaAs and p-InP into aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes have been measured and current theories examined critically. The linearized optimal current/potential relation for p-GaAs followed the 3/2 power law and gave the reciprocal power results 0.66 (+OR-) 0.17 and 0.61 (+OR-) 0.09 at pH 7.0 and 11.4, respectively. The threshold potential was -1.00 V (+OR-) 0.09 V(SCE) at both pH's. Corresponding experiments at p-InP gave 0.70 (+OR-) 0.07 for reciprocal power at these pH's and a threshold potential of -0.65 V (+OR-) 0.02 (SCE). Both crystals followed the 3/2 power law for the photocurrent/wavelength relation with work …

The Critical Connection: A Computer-Assisted Rhetorical Criticism Of The Message Of Harry F. Chapin., Ronald Robert Capps Jan 1984

The Critical Connection: A Computer-Assisted Rhetorical Criticism Of The Message Of Harry F. Chapin., Ronald Robert Capps

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study I examine the forms, contents, and functions of the rhetoric of singer-songwriter Harry Forster Chapin, in an attempt to more fully understand rhetorical theorist Kenneth Burke's assertion that his grandson was a uniquely powerful rhetorical figure who "could energize people, everyone, the world.". This study was conceived from the perspective of the "New Rhetoric," and therefore, it acknowledges that "identification" may serve as an "end" in itself. It is this willingness to accept "identification" as an "end" in itself that separates contemporary rhetorical theory from its classical counterpart. In my effort to remain faithful to Chapin's lyrics, …

The Habitat And Cost Of Production Of Domestic Petroleum Resources., John Daniel Grace Jan 1984

The Habitat And Cost Of Production Of Domestic Petroleum Resources., John Daniel Grace

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The geologic characteristics of an oil field, most importantly its depth and surface area, have significant impacts on the average cost of extracting petroleum. These characteristics of petroleum habitat constitute a measure of "deposit quality," as ore grade does in the production of metals. This measure can be used to separately evaluate the effects on cost, over time, of changing depost quality and technological advance. A sample of 156 U.S. fields, with average estimated ultimate recovery of 50 million barrels, was analyzed to quantify the cross-sectional differences in average production cost on the basis of depth, area, productive capacity, reservoir …

Alpha-Methyl Functionalization Of Electron-Poor Heterocycles And Synthesis Of Novel Dipyridine And Phenanthroline Metallocyclic Palladium Complexes., Garry Edward Kiefer Jan 1984

Alpha-Methyl Functionalization Of Electron-Poor Heterocycles And Synthesis Of Novel Dipyridine And Phenanthroline Metallocyclic Palladium Complexes., Garry Edward Kiefer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The (alpha)-methyl functionalization of 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline was conducted via a four step procedure to give 2,9-bis(chloromethyl)-1,10-phenanthroline in high yield. Attempts to prepare this compound via a one-step free radical halogenation using NCS were unsuccessful, however, a comparative evaluation of this approach in other heterocycles demonstrated the potential for direct mono-chlorination. Additional functionalization procedures were investigated via the olefination of 2,2'-dipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline. Following the oxidation of 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-dipyridine to the dialdehyele, standard Wittig reaction conditions were employed to obtain 6,6'-divinyl-2,2'-dipyridine, however, yields were low because of aldehyde insolubility. This method was replaced by the Wittig-Horner reaction utilizing heterocyclic phosphonates as precursors to …

The Velocity And Shape Of Gas Slugs Rising In Vertical Tubes And Rectangular Slots., Henry Valma Nickens Jan 1984

The Velocity And Shape Of Gas Slugs Rising In Vertical Tubes And Rectangular Slots., Henry Valma Nickens

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The rise of a large gas bubble, or slug, through a closed, vertical, liquid-filled channel of infinite length has been investigated by means of potential flow theory. Three channel geometries are considered: (1) the circular tube, (2) the two-dimensional rectangular channel and (3) the three-dimensional rectangular slot. The effect of inter- facial surface tension is explicitly accounted for by application of the Kelvin-LaPlace equation, thus making the bubble shape an integral part of the solution. For the circular tube of radius R and diameter D, the solution is expressed in terms of the Stokes Stream Function which consists of an …

This work was a study of Lewis acid-base interactions in a series of complexes formed by the reaction of a series of Group IIIA metal alkyls with some simple amine N-oxides. The Group IIIA metal alkyls used in this work were trimethylaluminum, triethylaluminum, tripropylaluminum, tributylaluminum, triisobutylaluminum, trimethylgallium, triethylgallium, tripropylgallium, tributylgallium, triisobutylgallium, trimethylindium, triethylindium, tripropylindium, tributylindium, and triisobutylindium. The amine N-oxides used were pyridine-N-oxide, 2-picoline-N-oxide, 3-picoline-N-oxide, and 4-picoline-N-oxide. Elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, visible-ultraviolet spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and cryoscopic molecular weight determinations were used to study these complexes. Nuclear magnetic resonance was the most useful method for determining …

Interactions Of Soybean Arthropods And Crop Weeds: Diversity, Moth Nutrition, And Stability (Foraging Behavior, Nectar Analysis, Lepidopterous)., Fred Lewis Collins Jan 1984

Interactions Of Soybean Arthropods And Crop Weeds: Diversity, Moth Nutrition, And Stability (Foraging Behavior, Nectar Analysis, Lepidopterous)., Fred Lewis Collins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Weeds which occur in crop ecosystems may cause suppressive or stimulating effects on arthropod abundance. Yet, little is known about the weed-insect interactions in Louisiana soybean. A three-part study was conducted from 1980-1983 to measure the abundance of arthropods in soybean, Glycine max Merr., as affected by the presence of absence of various weeds. A survey of arthropod abundance was conducted in commercial soybean fields which were either weedy or weed-free in central and south central Louisiana during 1980. Weedy fields had greater abundance of spiders, Geocoris punctipes (Say), and Lebia analis Dejean. Late instar green cloverworm, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner, …

A Rhetorical Study Of Winthrop Rockefeller's Political Speeches, 1964-1971 (Arkansas)., Merrill Anway Jones Jan 1984

A Rhetorical Study Of Winthrop Rockefeller's Political Speeches, 1964-1971 (Arkansas)., Merrill Anway Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to analyze rhetorically the political speeches of Winthrop Rockefeller, 1964-1971. Criteria for the study were determined by the theories of Lloyd Bitzer, Ernest Bormann and Kenneth Burke, which as a whole, interrelated to give full understanding of Rockefeller's phenomenal political rise in Arkansas. Examined were the political conditions in Arkansas prior to Rockefeller's emergence as the Republican Party leader in 1964. Application of Bitzer's situational theory revealed that the controlling exigence, the lack of a two-party system, was the direct cause of other exigences such as poor racial conditions, poor educational standards, poor economic …

Stewardship Of Creation: Some Implications For Economic Theory And Policy., John Harlan Mcdonald Jan 1984

Stewardship Of Creation: Some Implications For Economic Theory And Policy., John Harlan Mcdonald

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Neoclassical economic theory defines an optimal or efficient allocation of natural resources as one which secures the maximum output of preferred goods and services, or as an allocation in which the resources are used in their highest valued uses. The theory is based on two important normative assumptions: the welfare of the community is an increasing function of the individual's welfare, and an individual is better off in a freely chosen position. These assumptions form a subjective theory of value which locates the source of intrinsic value in the individual's tastes and preferences; value or wealth is whatever satisfies the …

Violett; Summer of My German Soldier (1978) by Bette Greene, adapted by Jane-Howard Hammerstein; and Are You in the House Alone? (1978) by Richard Peck, adapted by Judith Parker. Videotapes, transcripts, and the novels were studied by dividing the latter two into …

Oviposition Of Psorophora Columbiae (Dyar And Knab) In Louisiana Pastureland., Dwight Charles Williams Jan 1984

Oviposition Of Psorophora Columbiae (Dyar And Knab) In Louisiana Pastureland., Dwight Charles Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cattle hoofprint samples from a permanent pasture in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana during 1980 yielded an average of 9.2 eggs and capsules of Psorophora columbiae (Dyar and Knab)/hoofprint. Pasture sections differed significantly (P < .0001) in number of eggs and capsules/hoofprint. Sections ranged from 2.7 to 20.6 eggs and capsules/hoofprint. The number of eggs and capsules collected/date also differed significantly (P < .01), but peaks in numbers did not always correspond with peaks in rainfall or adult mosquito collections. Hoofprint densities and herd movement did not influence egg distribution. Estimates of numbers of eggs and capsules on the 30 ha permanent pasture range from 2,633,621 in late February to 16,913,025 on June 2, 1980. Mosquito oviposition was compared in hoofprint samples taken from a permanent pasture and a fallow rice field in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana during 1981. Hoofprints from the permanent pasture contained significantly (P < .001) more Ps. columbiae eggs than did hoofprints from the fallow rice field, averaging 3.3 and 1.9 eggs/hoofprint respectively. However, estimates of egg density in the 2 sites did not differ significantly (P > .05) since hoofprint density was greater in the fallow rice field. Egg density estimates were 15.2/m('2) for the fallow rice field and 13.3/m('2) for the permanent pasture. Hoofprint depth, hoofprint location, and cattle movement did not influence egg distribution. Results of studies with caged Ps. columbiae exposed to natural lighting conditions indicated that the oviposition cycle was bimodal with the main peak occurring in the 2 h period …

Stereoelectronic Effects In General Base Catalysis By Carboxylate. Theoretical Calculations And Studies In The Synthesis Of New Intramolecular Models Of Enzymatic Catalysis., Julian Tirado-Rives

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The hypothesis of the existence of stereoelectronic effects in the reactions in which carboxylate acts as a general base catalyst is further studied through the use of theoretical methods. Ab initio calculations on the structures and relative energies of the syn and anti conformations of formic acid at different degrees of solvation are described. These calculations indicate that the syn conformation is more stable in aqueous phase than the anti by 11.9 (at the STO-3G//STO-3G level), 6.9 (4-31G//4-31G), and 2.5 kcal/mol (6-31G(,**)//4-31G). This last number, though, comes from single point calculations at the 6-31G(,**) level on the 4-31G optimized structure …
