Agricultural Change Among The Alto Mayo Aguaruna, Eastern Peru: The Effects On Culture And Environment., Martha Adrienne Teresa Works Jan 1984

Agricultural Change Among The Alto Mayo Aguaruna, Eastern Peru: The Effects On Culture And Environment., Martha Adrienne Teresa Works

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Aguaruna Indians of the Alto Mayo Valley of tropical eastern Peru are experiencing economic change as Spanish speaking colo- nists from the temperate highlands immigrate and begin intensive rice cultivation. The Aguaruna, subsisting until recently on hunting, gathering, and horticulture, are now being exposed to dramatically different ideas about land, agriculture, and technology. Economic change, as expressed by modification of agricultural patterns, reflects an area of close interaction between man and the environment. With the acceptance of rice cultivation among some Aguaruna in the Alto Mayo Valley a marked departure from traditional agricultural patterns has begun to emerge. Increased …

A History Of Louisiana, 1939-1945. (Volumes I And Ii)., Jerry Purvis Sanson Jan 1984

A History Of Louisiana, 1939-1945. (Volumes I And Ii)., Jerry Purvis Sanson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a study of Louisiana's political, social, and economic development during World War II. Louisiana in 1939 was a rural, agricultural, poorly-educated, racially segregated, one-party, southern state. By 1945, however, many aspects of life in Louisiana had changed. Louisiana's political development during the war years was marked by the temporary displacement of the Longite faction of the Democratic party by the reform faction of the party. Even though reformers Sam Jones and James H. Davis captured control of the executive branch of the state government, Longites remained strong in the legislature and in minor state offices. The Longite …

High Temperature Drying And Tempering Of Parboiled Rice And Effects On Grain Quality., Lakshman Velupillai Jan 1984

High Temperature Drying And Tempering Of Parboiled Rice And Effects On Grain Quality., Lakshman Velupillai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of high temperature drying and tempering of parboiled rice was undertaken to evaluate the effects on grain quality. Thirtysix treatments, with three levels of air temperature, three levels of moisture (of rice after exposure in the dryer), and four levels of tempering, were performed on Saturn variety, medium grain rice, parboiled under fixed conditions. The dried and tempered rice samples were then moisture equilibrated under room conditions and subjected to standard milling procedures. Analyses were performed to evaluate color, texture, protein, and strength characteristics of the milled rice. A time-based study of kernel hardness and strength properties was …

Studies In The Relationship Between Distinctive Features And Acoustic Cues (Phonetics, Phonology)., Thomas F. Walsh Jan 1984

Studies In The Relationship Between Distinctive Features And Acoustic Cues (Phonetics, Phonology)., Thomas F. Walsh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between the Distinctive Feature (DF) (+OR-)Voice and its acoustic manifestation has generated a great deal of discussion in recent years. Although it is well known that the phonological voicing contrast is often not manifested in terms of actual glottal pulsation, the exact acoustic manifestation has been debated. The collection of papers presented herein considers perceptual evidence for the acoustic manifestation of (+OR-)Voice in English stops in utterance-final position, produced without release and with no glottal pulsation during closure. It is concluded that in such cases, the primary acoustic cue to (+OR-)Voice is the preceding vocalic transition. That is …

Mechanical And Chemical Conditioning As An Aid In Hastening Drying Rate Of Ryegrass Forage., Marcel Tsang Mui Chung Jan 1984

Mechanical And Chemical Conditioning As An Aid In Hastening Drying Rate Of Ryegrass Forage., Marcel Tsang Mui Chung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate four types of mechanical, two types of chemical and combinations of mechanical-chemical conditioning treatments on drying rate and quality of ryegrass forage. Mechanical treatments ranged from cuticle abrasion to crushing of the stems while the chemicals were expected to remove or disrupt epicuticular waxes. The statistical design was a randomized block with two observations per cell. Analysis of variance results yielded highly significant block-treatment interaction for all variables examined. Two types of drying pattern were indicated. For treatments restricted to the plant surface as caused by the brushes and chemicals, the drying pattern was …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Geologic Evolution Of Eastern Terraba Trough, Southwestern Costa Rica (Tectonics, Forearc Basin)., Peter B. Yuan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sedimentary rocks of eastern Terraba Trough, southwestern Costa Rica, were deposited in a fore-arc basin developed at an ocean-ocean convergent boundary. The basin developed in Middle to Late Eocene when the Farallon Plate began its subduction beneath the Caribbean Plate. Shallow-water carbonates of the Brito Formation were deposited on shoals of basement blocks. These were surrounded by deeper-marine areas in which volcaniclastics and carbonate debris accumulated. The Brito Formation consists of algal-foraminiferal packstone to grainstone, rudstone, and rare wackestone formed in force-slope, carbonate buildup, and open platform environments in a warm, tropical sea. The environmental conditions remained unchanged during the …

Fourteen demographic variables selected to be used as independent variables were age, highest degree completed, current annual salary, years of teaching experience, number of months employed per year, average number of students per class, …

Menstrual Cycle Influences On Acute Alcohol Intoxication (Estradiol, Progesterone, Blood Alcohol Level)., Alan Russell King Jan 1984

Menstrual Cycle Influences On Acute Alcohol Intoxication (Estradiol, Progesterone, Blood Alcohol Level)., Alan Russell King

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent studies suggest that the course of acute alcohol intoxication fluctuates as a function of the menstrual cycle. Attenuated behavioral effects of alcohol at descending, as opposed to corresponding ascending, phases of elimination and absorption further suggest that acute alcohol tolerance develops over the course of intoxication. The present study was designed to examine the course of acute alcohol intoxication at different points within the menstrual cycle and to analyze relationships among sex hormone levels and blood alcohol dependent measures. Acute alcohol absorption and elimination was investigated in 12 adult, normally cycling women administered a moderate dose (0.66 ml/kg) of …

Selected Physiological, Psychological, And Anthropometric Characteristics Of The Kuwaiti World Cup Soccer Team (Athletes, Vo2 Max, Per Cent Fat)., Jasem Mohammad Ramadan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the investigation was to examine the maximal oxygen consumption ((')VO2 max), maximal anaerobic power (AP max), body composition (BC), somatotype (ST), the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and the State-Trait Anxiety (STAI) characteristics of the Kuwaiti World Cup Soccer Team. (')VO2 max was determined using a progressive cycle ergometer protocol with data obtained by standard semi-open circuit spirometry. AP max was calculated by using the highest value of three vertical jumps applied to the Lewis formula: (SQRT.(4.9) x weight x SQRT.(D)). BC was estimated by skinfolds and ST was by the Heath-Carter method. Translated versions of POMS …

Authority Vs. Power: Preference For Control Among Selected Church Structures., Raymond Leslie Houck Jan 1984

Authority Vs. Power: Preference For Control Among Selected Church Structures., Raymond Leslie Houck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Preference for hierarchical control (PHC) was studied among Catholic priests and religious (ordained and lay) and Baptist ministers in Louisiana and Gulf Coast area (n = 240). Groups represented decreasing strength of hierarchical church structure based on criteria of Mackey (1972). Strength of PHC, as measured by Cochran's (1975) Hierarchical Control Scale, should be influenced by the subject's membership involvement in church structure and his age. The Job Description Index (Smith, et al., 1969) measured job satisfaction (JS) as it related to PHC in the descending order of church structures. Because perceptions differ, JS was analyzed again as a function …

The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Retinol-Binding Protein., M. E. Newcomer, T. A. Jones, J. Aqvist, J. Sundelin, U. Eriksson, L. Rask, P. A. Peterson

Faculty Publications

The complex of retinol with its carrier protein, retinol-binding protein (RBP) has been crystallized and its three-dimensional structure determined using X-ray crystallography. Its most striking feature is an eight-stranded up-and-down beta barrel core that completely encapsulates the retinol molecule. The retinol molecule lies along the axis of the barrel with the beta-ionone ring innermost and the tip of the isoprene tail close to the surface.

External Labelling Of Glycoproteins From First-Trimester Human Placental Microvilli, S. J. Fisher, M. S. Leitch, R. A. Laine Jan 1984

External Labelling Of Glycoproteins From First-Trimester Human Placental Microvilli, S. J. Fisher, M. S. Leitch, R. A. Laine

Faculty Publications

The brush-border glycoproteins of first-trimester human placentas were investigated by using two external labelling techniques: (1) sequential digestion with neuraminidase and galactose oxidase, followed by reduction with NaB3H4, which 3H-labels terminal galactose and galactosaminase residues; and (2) sequential treatment with periodate and NaB3H4, which 3H-terminal sialic acid residues. The labelling procedures were performed on intact tissue so that the results would more closely approximate the topography of the bursh border in vivo. The microvilli were isolated, subjected to sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis, and the [3H]glycoproteins detected by fluorography. Densitometer scans of the fluorograms of the [3H]galactoproteins showed that, under reducing …

Relationships between thaw rate, thaw bath time, and initial bath and final seminal temperature with coefficients of determination .99 and .97 were: bath time = −.01 + 220.25(1/thaw rate); initial bath temperature = final seminal temperature − 7.29 + 390.05(1/bath time). Ejaculates from 10 bulls were split and processed in egg yolk-citrate-glycerol, egg yolk-Tris-glycerol, and whole milk-glycerol. All semen was packaged and frozen in .5-ml French straws at −196°C. Sixteen thaw treatments consisted of factorial combinations of four final seminal temperatures and four thaw rates. Treatments were assessed by post-thaw acrosomal integrity after 3-h 37°C incubation. Seminal quality improved with …

The Investigation Of Methanation Kinetics Over Ruthenium And Iron-Ruthenium Bimetallic Catalysts., Krisda Chirapongse Jan 1984

The Investigation Of Methanation Kinetics Over Ruthenium And Iron-Ruthenium Bimetallic Catalysts., Krisda Chirapongse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The catalytic properties of Ru and Fe-Ru bimetallics supported on Y-Zeolite were determined for the CO hydrogenation reaction. The results, based on the reaction at 523 K and an H(,2):CO ratio of 3:1, revealed that the addition of Fe to Ru effectively reduces the number of both H(,2) and CO active sites as determined by chemisorption experiments. Based on H(,2) chemisorption, the dispersion (number of active sites per total number of metal atoms) decreased from 0.59 with no Fe present to 0.02 with 5.9% Fe. This phenomenon was substantiated by the ESCA analysis which indicated totally reduced Ru metal particles …

On The Order-Theoretical Foundation Of A Theory Of Quasicompactly Generated Spaces Without Separation Axiom, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson

Faculty Publications

A Hausdorff space X is said to be compactly generated (a /e-space) if and only if the open subsets V of X are precisely those subsets for which K n V is open in K for all compact subsets of K of X. We interpret this property as a duality property of the lattice 0{ X) of open sets of X, This view point allows the introduction of the concept of being quasicompactly generated for an arbitrary sober space X. The methods involve the duality theory of up-complete semilattices, and certain inverse limit constructions. In the process, we verify that …
