Biochemical Systematics Of The Tyrannoidea (Aves) (Electrophoresis, Jackknifing, Phylogenetic Trees, Consensus Methods)., Scott Merrill Lanyon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The superfamily Tyrannoidea (Aves) has been the subject of numerous systematic investigations, yet the relationships among and within the five component families remain ambiguous. Relationships within the superfamily were investigated using starch gel electrophoresis of 20 enzyme loci in 14 cotinga genera, 12 manakin genera, the flycatcher genus Myiarchus, and each of the genera from the monogeneric families Phytotomidae and Dxyruncidae. Electrophoretic characters were found to contain considerable information concerning familial and subfamilial relationships within this New World assemblage. The Fitch-Margoliash "jackknife strict consensus tree" and a cladogram generated from the character state distributions were very similar and were used …

Rb-Sr ages on biotite - whole rock pairs and an ('40)Ar/('39)Ar dating of a biotite from the granite indicate final cooling to 300(DEGREES)-350(DEGREES)C at 1.33 Ga. This …

Phase-Sensitive Detection And The Back-Action Evasion Of Amplifier Force Noise (Measurement Theory, Transducers, Antenna, Gravitational Radiation, Accelerometer)., Gary W. Spetz Jan 1985

Phase-Sensitive Detection And The Back-Action Evasion Of Amplifier Force Noise (Measurement Theory, Transducers, Antenna, Gravitational Radiation, Accelerometer)., Gary W. Spetz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Limitations on the sensitivity for detecting a weak classical force acting on a harmonic oscillator are imposed by the quantum mechanical properties associated with a "standard" amplitude-and-phase measurement and, classically, by the back reaction noise associated with the finite noise temperature of the amplifier used to process the measurement. These are known as the "standard quantum limit" and the "standard amplifier limit", respectively. We present the theoretical motivation behind the quest to circumvent these limits, and examine a single-transducer back-action evading measurement scheme designed to perform a phase-sensitive coupling to the oscillator, with the concomitant circumvention of the standard amplifier …

Modeling The Failure Time Distribution For Manufacturing And Retail Corporations Using Survival Analysis (Bankruptcy, Cox Model, Binary Response, Business)., George S. Karamessinis Jan 1985

Modeling The Failure Time Distribution For Manufacturing And Retail Corporations Using Survival Analysis (Bankruptcy, Cox Model, Binary Response, Business)., George S. Karamessinis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the past the problem of financial distress has been investigated mainly through discriminant analysis and conditional response (logit, probit) techniques. With the use of such models, inference is made about the future status of a company as failure or non-failure conditional upon its observed financial attributes. Although response models (and discriminant models under certain assumptions) can be used to estimate the probability of failure of a firm as a function of its observed characteristics, neither group of techniques can provide estimates of the failure rate (hazard) of a population as a function of time. In certain situations, when the …

Large Strain Theory As Applied To Penetration Mechanism In Soils (Plasticity)., Panagiotis Demetrios Kiousis Jan 1985

Large Strain Theory As Applied To Penetration Mechanism In Soils (Plasticity)., Panagiotis Demetrios Kiousis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A theoretical analysis of a Quasistatic Cone Penetrometer Test (QCPT) is presented in this work. A large strain, elasto-plastic formulation is developed for this purpose and is implemented into a finite element method program. The basic relations of the theory are developed in an Eulerian reference frame, subsequently transformed to a Lagrangian coordinate system, and through simple time differentiation, the necessary rate equations are derived. Both isotropic and kinematic hardening of the Ziegler type are introduced in this theory. The plasticity models implemented are the extended von Mises and the cap model by DiMaggio and Sandler. The pore water pressures …

Spaces Of Order Arcs In Hyperspaces Of Subcontinua., Mark James Lynch

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eberhart, Nadler, and Nowell asked for which Peano continua X is it true that (GAMMA)(X), the space of order arcs in C(X), is homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube ? They answered the question affirmatively when X contains no free arcs. In Chapter IV, we characterize those 1-dimensional ANR('s) X for which (GAMMA)(X) is homeomorphic to . In Chapters I and II, we develop techniques for analyzing this problem and, in Chapter III, we also apply these techniques in answering some open questions concerning Whitney levels in C(X).

Individual Differences And Their Relation To Social Structure In Domestic Cats., Rena Durr Mister Jan 1985

Individual Differences And Their Relation To Social Structure In Domestic Cats., Rena Durr Mister

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two groups of domestic cats with established social structures were tested for their response to novel stimuli in a variety of test situations. Clearly observable individual differences in responses were seen which were consistent over a series of test sessions and remained stable despite regular environmental disruptions. Individual differences in behavioral response were found not to be related to object dominance (food competition) or social dominance (freedom of movement in social encounters) unlike similar studies with social animals. No relationship was found in either group between rank in object dominance and rank in social dominance. Significant correlations were demonstrated between …

The cognitive decision …

Magneto-Optical Investigations Of Surface Space-Charge Layers In Metal-Oxide - Semiconductor (Mos) Systems., Asif Khandker Jan 1985

Magneto-Optical Investigations Of Surface Space-Charge Layers In Metal-Oxide - Semiconductor (Mos) Systems., Asif Khandker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of finite boundaries on the Faraday rotation and ellipticity due to the two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed in the inversion layer of a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) system is considered. Although the 2D Drude model is mainly used, many body effects are also considered using the memory-function approach. The validity of using a 2D model for the inversion layer is justified by showing its equivalence to a three dimensional model which includes multiple reflections within the inversion layer. The free carriers in the metal gate are investigated by calculating the surface admittance of the gate. It is found that …
