Salinity Effects On The Development And Larval Tolerance Of Five Species Of Echinoderms., Richard Allen Roller
Salinity Effects On The Development And Larval Tolerance Of Five Species Of Echinoderms., Richard Allen Roller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Salinity effects on the developmental rates, larval tolerances and various metabolic processes of five species of echinoderms were investigated. Development of Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck), Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O. F. Muller, 1776), Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Stimpson, 1857), Strongylocentrotus pallidus (G. O. Sars, 1871), and Pisaster ochraceus (Brandt, 1835) larvae were observed. Developmental rates and larval survival to metamorphosis of S. droebachiensis and S. pallidus varied directly with salinity and were well within the observed salinity tolerance and distributional limits for the adults. For each species, embryos and larvae at lower salinities (20, 22.5, and $25\sp{o}\!/\!\sb{oo})$ tended to develop more slowly than those at …
Regulation Of Dextransucrase Secretion By Proton Motive Force In Leuconostoc Mesenteroides., David Roland Otts
Regulation Of Dextransucrase Secretion By Proton Motive Force In Leuconostoc Mesenteroides., David Roland Otts
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The relationship between proton motive force and the secretion of the enzyme dextransucrase (E.C. 2.4.1.5) in Leuconostoc mesenteroides was investigated. The transmembrane pH gradient was determined by measurement of the uptake of radiolabeled benzoate or methylamine while the membrane potential was determined by measurement of the uptake of radiolabeled tetraphenylphosphonium bromide. Leuconostoc mesenteroides was able to maintain a constant proton motive force of $-130$ mV when grown in fermenters at constant pH while a value of $-140$ mV was determined from concentrated cell suspensions. The contribution of the membrane potential and transmembrane pH gradient to the proton motive force varied …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This 12-week study conceptually merged cooperative learning and group contingency approaches to classroom interventions to assess how varying task and incentive structures affect fifth-grade students' spelling achievement, social status, and perceptions of treatment procedures. The study used two groups (treatment and control group) of fifth-grade students. The students in the treatment group were actively involved with one of six group contingency procedures designed to improve spelling performances. The conditions for students in the treatment groups varied on dimensions of task structure (group or individual) and incentive structure (interdependent, dependent, or no incentive). Treatment acceptability, spelling achievement, and peer nominated social …
A Study Of Political Bias In Decisions Made By The National Labor Relations Board In Unfair Labor Practice Cases., Ronald Harold Schroeder
A Study Of Political Bias In Decisions Made By The National Labor Relations Board In Unfair Labor Practice Cases., Ronald Harold Schroeder
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An important question has pervaded the field of labor-management relations for over fifty years: Is political bias present in the decisions rendered by National Labor Relations Board members in unfair labor practice cases? This study develops and tests a model of Board member decisions in selected unfair labor practice cases over the period 1962-1983. By studying 2147 decisions made by seventeen individual members, a relationship was found among the decisions and several variables of political party affiliations, personal background factors of members, and conditions within the procedure by which allegations of unfair labor practice violations are processed for decision. Political …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Republican Speeches In The 1856 Presidential Election Campaign., Linda Jean Webster
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Republican Speeches In The 1856 Presidential Election Campaign., Linda Jean Webster
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Republican party organized its first presidential campaign in 1856. The party was composed of men from a wide variety of political backgrounds, primarily from free soil and anti-slavery groups. The rhetoric of this first Republican campaign represented the efforts of these individual speakers to reconcile their free soil arguments with the official party platform. Although the party was loosely organized and poorly funded, many respected orators participated in the campaign. As background for the rhetorical analysis, the major political and historical events of the decade are identified in the first two chapters. Bleeding Kansas, abolitionism, and the reorganization of …
The Management Of Dying: Tasks And Social Relationships In Patient Care., Jeffrey Michael Clair
The Management Of Dying: Tasks And Social Relationships In Patient Care., Jeffrey Michael Clair
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A grounded theory approach guides the interpretation of observational, semi-structured interviews, content analysis, and taped discourse data collected from a 48 bed oncology unit with 288 study patients. Data are presented to explicate generated concepts of regressive intervention and the dying role. Data indicate that when physicians no longer perceive their goals of cure achievable, they distance themselves from patients. Physicians use certain devices to facilitate this gradual or abrupt, but purposeful, withdrawal from patients' curative regimens. These devices are specified in discourse transcripts as use of the medical record, silence, and alternative interactions (family members). Physician-authority, cautious optimistic conversational …
Development Of A Soft-Tissue Infection Model In The Cow., Cyril Roy Clarke
Development Of A Soft-Tissue Infection Model In The Cow., Cyril Roy Clarke

The ultimate goals of this study were to develop and define a subcutaneous tissue chamber as a suitable device for establishing a Pasteurella haemolytica soft-tissue infection model in cattle and to use this model to study the in vivo efficacy and distribution of a potentiated sulfa antimicrobial. Developmental studies resulted in the selection of a suitable tissue chamber design that maximized the chamber penetration of an intravenously administered lipid-soluble drug. This chamber could be sampled with ease and contained enough chamber fluid to allow repetitive sampling. Cytological and chemical investigation revealed that the composition of fluid within chambers approached the …
A Supply Response Model For Rice And Soybeans In The Mississippi Delta., David Leon Hoppenstedt
A Supply Response Model For Rice And Soybeans In The Mississippi Delta., David Leon Hoppenstedt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the economic sources of variation in the supply of rice and soybeans in the Mississippi Delta. As farmers alter their land allocations to various crops, they cause fluctuations in the supply of agricultural products. Traditional theory posits that acreage planted is a function of lagged prices, but does not explicitly recognize some technological constraints. One prevalent technological constraint is that the monocropping of particular crops results in a significant decrease in land productivity. The model in this study attempts to improve the specification of the technological constraint of declining soil productivity due to monocropping. Two different statistical …

Studies On The Protein Changes In Skeletal Muscles Of Gulf Coast Finfish Species Associated With Frozen Storage, Formaldehyde Addition And Freeze-Thawing Cycles., Myrna O. Nisperos-Carriedo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effects of frozen storage, formaldehyde addition and freeze-thawing cycles were determined using three finfish species from the Gulf of Mexico, spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus), black drum (Pogonias cromis) and mullet (Mugil cephalus). Frozen storage of spotted seatrout fillets at $-20\sp\circ$C for 6 weeks led to reductions in pH, water-binding capacity and solubility of salt-extractable proteins. SDS-Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic examination of the salt-extractable proteins showed that as time of storage increased, aggregation of high-molecular weight components occurred. The addition of 300 ppm formaldehyde prior to frozen storage did not produce significant changes. However, muscles containing 500 ppm formaldehyde showed decreases …
Borehole Friction Assessment And Application To Oilfield Casing Design In Directional Wells., Eric Edgar Maidla
Borehole Friction Assessment And Application To Oilfield Casing Design In Directional Wells., Eric Edgar Maidla
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The phenomenon of mechanical friction in the oil well borehole was investigated. Immediate application of such a study is to improve casing design in directional wells. An additional application is the prediction of reciprocating loads in directional wells for cementing purposes, that is recognized to be an effective method to avoid cement channeling through efficient mud displacement. Field studies on the borehole friction coefficient revealed its insensitivity to depth, various well trajectories, size of pipe and its surface configuration, leading to the conclusion that one value of the borehole friction factor can represent a single well. Also there was good …

Marital Relationships And Conflict Resolution Skills Of Bulimics., Dorothy Jo Van Buren
Marital Relationships And Conflict Resolution Skills Of Bulimics., Dorothy Jo Van Buren
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by episodic binge eating and other related symptomatology. Previous research suggests that bulimics experience interpersonal problems particularly in the areas of conflict resolution and in their satisfaction with their roles within their families and marriages. The present study compared 12 bulimic couples to 14 maritally distressed couples and 15 normal control couples on measures of relationship satisfaction, conflict resolution styles, and beliefs about intimate relationships. In addition, couples' communication styles were analyzed based on their participation in an analogue conflict situation. Results of this study provided support for the contention that bulimics experience dissatisfaction …
Group Actions On Minimal Functions Over Finite Fields., Francisco Rivero
Group Actions On Minimal Functions Over Finite Fields., Francisco Rivero
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work deals with the Fourier transform over finite fields. A notion of minimal function for the Fourier transform is defined. The minimal functions are shown to be a generalization of the famous Legendre symbol $\Psi$. The minimal functions are studied here in terms of group actions, allowing both upper and lower estimates on the size of the set of all minimal functions. These estimates are sufficient to settle a conjecture of O. C. McGehee on the number of minimal functions.

Interactions Of Weed, Nematode, And Arthropod Management Strategies With The Louisiana Sugarcane Agroecosystem: A Holistic Perspective., Allan Thomas Showler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Interactions among Louisiana sugarcane (Saccharum hybrids), weeds, nematodes, sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), and pest, prey, and predatory arthropods were mediated through tropic, host plant biochemical, and intra- and interspecific competitive relationships. Weed competition reduced crop biomass (15%, P $\le$ 0.005), and sugar yield (13%, P $\le$ 0.05). Weeds, however, were associated with more predatory arthropods, including Solenopsis invicta Buren, on the soil, weeds, and sugarcane plants, and with reduced Diatraea saccharalis (F.) injury (over 25%, P $\le$ 0.05). Without chemical D. saccharalis control, sugarcane production in weedy habitats was economically superior to that in weed-free habitats. Aldicarb, a nematicide-insecticide, diminished …

The development histories of eight coastal resorts along the Gulf of Mexico littoral (Fort Myers Beach, Pensacola Beach, Dauphin Island, Grand Isle, Galveston Island, South Padre Island, Tecolutia, and Progreso) are documented to evaluate variability of temporal, spatial, and environmental aspects of resort development. Temporally, a modified S-curve model of resort evolution is offered to describe the historical development of seaside resorts, and stages of exploration, infrastructural development, and settlement expansion precede each resort's levelling off stage. The upper level of development, or level of maturation, varies among the sites, primarily as a function of demand. Resorts in high demand …
An Economic And Statistical Analysis Of Selected Structural Characteristics Of Louisiana Agricultural Sector And Its Impact On Resource Situations., Stephen Leong
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study focuses on the importance of structural change in the farm sector and its interactive relationship with the nonfarm sector. This relationship was exemplified through an overview and trend analysis of the structural change and resource adjustments that have occurred in the farming areas in Louisiana between 1959 and 1982. Extrapolative forecasting techniques, such as trend extrapolation, Markov Process, negative exponential and age cohort analysis, were used to project changes in farm numbers to the year 2000. The results show declining farm numbers and the continuation of present trends. Large and medium size farms will increase while small and …
