In Vitro Regeneration And Protein Changes Associated With Two Cultivars Of Agrostis Palustris Huds. Cultured Under High Sodium-Chloride Conditions., John Casper Hovanesian
In Vitro Regeneration And Protein Changes Associated With Two Cultivars Of Agrostis Palustris Huds. Cultured Under High Sodium-Chloride Conditions., John Casper Hovanesian
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Calli from 'Penneagle' and 'Seaside' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) were selected for enhanced ability to proliferate on media supplemented with 514 mM NaCl. Based on dry matter production and vigor, growth of plants regenerated from NaCl-adapted calli of both cultivars in saline hydroponic nutrient medium, was superior to that of plants regenerated from non-adapted calli. At 257 mM NaCl, plants from NaCl-sensitive calli died or were unable to produce measurable dry matter whereas plants from NcCl-adapted calli grew well. Growth of plants from NaCl-adapted calli was inhibited at 340 mM NaCl. At 514 mM NaCl, resistant plants no longer …
The Effect Of Vocal Modeling On Pitch-Matching Accuracy Of Children In Grades One Through Six., Georgia A. Green
The Effect Of Vocal Modeling On Pitch-Matching Accuracy Of Children In Grades One Through Six., Georgia A. Green
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of adult female, adult male, and child vocal modeling on the pitch-matching accuracy of children in grades one through six. Because singing is a basic component of the elementary music curriculum and is a skill which a child will continue to use throughout his/her life, it is important to determine how a child can most successfully develop and use his/her singing voice. Existing literature indicates that those factors which most directly affect a child's singing ability are maturation, auditory discrimination, vocal range, and vocal modeling. Conflicting results exist as to …
The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr
The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation studies the conditions which brought the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) into existence in 1914 and which have sustained it for over 70 years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 40 percent of Russia's population consists of farmers and that approximately 70 percent of China's population are farmers. The significance of these figures in relation to productivity is apparent when contrasted with the United States farm population of 2 percent. The current high level of production in American agriculture, sustained by such a small percentage of the population, is not an accident, as Professor Roy V. Scott, …
The Rational Overhauser: An Interpolating Rational Cubic Curve., Jeffrey Neil Jortner
The Rational Overhauser: An Interpolating Rational Cubic Curve., Jeffrey Neil Jortner
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A rational interpolating cubic curve which implicitly maintains first order geometric continuity in splines has been developed. The curve is formed by blending two rational quadratic curves. Since the blending method used was originally introduced by Overhauser, this curve is referred to as the Rational Overhauser (Rover) curve. The curve formulation utilizes four shape factors to provide control of the curve. A geometrical and analytical interpretation of these shape factors and their relationship to each other is discussed. Procedures for representing conic sections using the rational Overhauser curve are presented. Also included are techniques for mapping between the Rover curve …
Parameters Of Peat Formation In The Mississippi Delta (Holocene)., Elisabeth Catharina Kosters
Parameters Of Peat Formation In The Mississippi Delta (Holocene)., Elisabeth Catharina Kosters
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Mississippi Delta consists of six major Holocene deltaic complexes, that each had a life-span of about 1500 years. Emphasis of this study is on autochthonous peats of Barataria Basin, a large-scale interdistributary basin, between levees of the LaFourche and St. Bernard/Plaquemine deltas. A 6 m. thick set of lithostratigraphic units constitutes the aggradational basin-fill. Organic-rich beds occur in three phases, each representing an accumulating period that was interrupted by subsidence and the influx of detrital clastics from renewed nearby fluvio-deltaic sedimentation. Peats accumulated in eutrophic, non-domed environments in fresh water swamps and (often floating) marshes and average 81.7% organic …
The Rabbit Phosphofructokinase Genes: Molecular Cloning, Sequencing And Characterization., Ming-Ching Kao
The Rabbit Phosphofructokinase Genes: Molecular Cloning, Sequencing And Characterization., Ming-Ching Kao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two rabbit phosphofructokinase (PFK) genomic clones were isolated from a lambda Charon 4A rabbit liver DNA library. A 180-bp rabbit muscle PFK cDNA encoding 60 amino acids in the C-terminal region of RM-PFK was used as a probe. By using the shotgun subcloning approach, we cloned, sequenced and characterized two rabbit PFK genomic clones. The two clones overlapped and represented a total length of 17 kb which encoded the entire RM-PFK protein. The organization of this gene was elucidated by restriction mapping and DNA sequencing. It contains 22 exons, ranging in size from 45 to 190 bp, separated by 21 …
Management Of Rhizoctonia Aerial Blight Of Soybean And Biology Of Sclerotia Of Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn (Louisiana)., Gary Fischer Joye
Management Of Rhizoctonia Aerial Blight Of Soybean And Biology Of Sclerotia Of Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn (Louisiana)., Gary Fischer Joye
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rhizoctonia Aerial Blight (RAB) has caused severe damage on susceptible soybean cultivars throughout the southern soybean growing areas in Louisiana and the southeastern United States. During the 1983, 1984, and 1985 growing seasons, several greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to determine the influence of cultural practices (row spacings, plant populations, potassium fertilizer rates, and fungicide treatments) on RAB. A row spacing of 25 cm resulted in higher yields than row spacings of 50, 75, or 100 cm, regardless of disease rating. After the crop canopy had reached its maximum density, disease ratings were not significantly different between row spacings …
Spacing Of Repetitions And Contextual Interference Effects In Motor Skill Learning., Harry John Meeuwsen
Spacing Of Repetitions And Contextual Interference Effects In Motor Skill Learning., Harry John Meeuwsen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three experiments are reported that examined the possibility that the contextual interference effect in motor skill learning is a variation of a multiple trial spacing of repetitions effect. Specifically, the question why a non-spaced condition in a spacing of multiple trials motor learning paradigm has not produced predicted retention deficits. Subjects in all experiments learned to perform a simple motor skill in a criterion movement time. Experiments 1 and 2 examined why spacing of multiple trials did not produce expected retention performance benefits in previous spacing experiments. The results of Experiment 1 and 2 showed that the randomness of the …
Metal Behavior In Acid Sulfate Soils Of Thailand., Philip Alderson Moore Jr
Metal Behavior In Acid Sulfate Soils Of Thailand., Philip Alderson Moore Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Metal availability and uptake by rice in flooded acid sulfate soils from the Central Plains region of Thailand were evaluated under field, growth chamber and greenhouse conditions. The results found in this study indicated that Fe$\sp{2+}$ activities are seldom in equilibrium with pure Fe solid phases in these soils. This was believed to be due to (1) transient redox conditions, (2) the presence of ill-defined ferric oxides, and/or (3) cation exchange reactions. Equilibria calculations also indicated that these soils were undersaturated with respect to most Ca, Mg, and Mn solid phases, and their activities were believed to be controlled by …
Managerial Reward Allocations: A Test Of Freedman And Montanari's Model., Jeanne Michele Russell
Managerial Reward Allocations: A Test Of Freedman And Montanari's Model., Jeanne Michele Russell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A part of Freedman and Montanari's (1980) managerial reward allocation model was examined in the present study. The hypotheses focused on two categories of antecedent variables, organizational and managerial, and on the dependent variable of choice of mode of reward allocation. They were tested utilizing questionnaire data collected from 155 managers in eleven financial institutions. The only hypothesis that was confirmed related managerial pay increase goals to the choice of reward allocation mode. In order to test the relative importance of different managerial and organizational variables in determining the mode of reward allocation mode, stepwise regression analyses were performed for …
Abstract Wiener Space Approach To Hida Calculus (Brownian Motion)., Youngsook Lee Shim
Abstract Wiener Space Approach To Hida Calculus (Brownian Motion)., Youngsook Lee Shim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Let $\cal S$ be the Schwartz space of rapidly decreasing real functions on ${\rm I\!R.}$ The dual space ${\cal S}\sp\ast$ of $\cal S$ consists of tempered distributions. The inclusion maps ${\cal S}\subset{\rm L\sp2(I\!R)}\subset{\cal S}\sp\ast$ are continuous. Hida's theory of Brownian and generalized Brownian functionals is the study of functionals defined on ${\cal S}\sp\ast.$ In this dissertation, the triple ${\cal S}\subset{\rm L\sp2(I\!R)}\subset{\cal S}\sp\ast$ is replaced by an abstract Wiener space ${\rm B}\sp\ast$ $\subset$ H $\subset$ B and an abstract version of Hida's theory is developed. The Gaussian measure on ${\cal S}\sp\ast$ in Hida's calculus is replaced by the standard Gaussian measure …
An Evaluation Of The Applicability Of Nonlinear Programming Algorithms To A Typical Commercial Process Flowsheeting Simulator. (Volumes I And Ii)., Michael Joseph Richard
An Evaluation Of The Applicability Of Nonlinear Programming Algorithms To A Typical Commercial Process Flowsheeting Simulator. (Volumes I And Ii)., Michael Joseph Richard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An efficient methodology for using commercial flowsheeting programs with advanced mathematical programming algorithms has been developed for the optimization of operating plants. The methodology was demonstrated and validated using ChemShare Corporation's DESIGN/2000 simulation of the Freeport Chemical Company's plant for sulfuric acid manufacture and three nonlinear programming techniques; successive linear programming, successive quadratic programming and the generalized reduced gradient method. The application of this methodology begins with the development of a feasible base case simulation. Partial derivatives of the economic model and constraint equations are computed using fully converged simulations. This information is used to formulate an optimization problem which …
Applications Of Syntax And Pragmatics To Research In Writing., Kathryn Louise Riley
Applications Of Syntax And Pragmatics To Research In Writing., Kathryn Louise Riley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Researchers in writing have expressed disillusionment with transformational-generative syntax over the past decade. Such disillusionment is caused partly by the different research goals and assumptions about language held by researchers in syntax and those in writing, and partly by unrealistic expectations about the pedagogical usefulness of syntactic theory. However, rather than abandoning the study of linguistics, writing specialists may benefit by reexamining the relation between their field and that of linguistics. First, researchers in writing should distinguish more clearly between applied research and pedagogy. Syntactic theory can be used to explain and analyze certain structural phenomena in student writing, even …
An Investigation Of The Inference And Mapping Components Of The Componential Theory Of Analogical Reasoning., Catherine Sheard
An Investigation Of The Inference And Mapping Components Of The Componential Theory Of Analogical Reasoning., Catherine Sheard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sternberg's componential theory of analogical reasoning (1977) provides a series of steps that may be followed in order to solve analogies. According to Sternberg, when given a simple analogy (in the form A:B::C: (D$\sb1$, D$\sb2$, D$\sb3$)) the reasoner: (a) encodes the terms of the analogy, (b) infers the relation between A and B, (c) maps the relation between A and C, (d) applies a relation analogous to the inferred one from C to each answer option, choosing the closer option, and (e) responds. The purpose of this research was to further investigate the inference and mapping processes of the componential …
Raison D'Etat And The American Philosophy Of Realism In World Affairs. (Volumes I And Ii)., Gregory T. Russell
Raison D'Etat And The American Philosophy Of Realism In World Affairs. (Volumes I And Ii)., Gregory T. Russell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which the heritage of political thought shaping European raison d'etat is significant for the theory and practice of post-World War II realism in American foreign policy. Analysis is guided by the hypothesis that the response of postwar realists to the issues raised by an interdependent multistate system differs from the traditional rationale of raison d'etat intended for a Eurocentric international society characterized by common diplomatic objectives and values. Consideration is given to how the continental legacy has been modified and adapted by realist spokesmen to the exigencies of America's …
Classical And Statistical Thermodynamics Of Gas Solubility In Polar Fluids., Christopher Paul Williams
Classical And Statistical Thermodynamics Of Gas Solubility In Polar Fluids., Christopher Paul Williams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The solubilities of argon and of three binary gas mixtures of nitrogen and methane, 25%CH$\sb 4$ - 75%N$\sb 2$, 50%CH$\sb 4$ - 50%N$\sb 2$ and 75%CH$\sb 4$ - 25%N$\sb 2$, in water have been measured at a temperature of 323K for pressures up to 124.1 MPa. The data have been correlated using the established forms of the Krichevsky-Kasarnovsky and Krichevsky-Ilinskaya equations and are in agreement with previous studies. The performance of the Krichevsky-Ilinskaya equation has been improved by using Wilson's equation in place of the two-suffix Margules equation to predict the non-ideality associated with the solute gas in the solution. …
Insulin Receptors Of Erythrocytes And Liver Membranes In Dogs., Karen Johnson Wolfsheimer
Insulin Receptors Of Erythrocytes And Liver Membranes In Dogs., Karen Johnson Wolfsheimer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Insulin receptor assays using canine liver membranes and erythrocytes were validated for use in evaluating insulin receptor binding parameters within a healthy population of dogs. Association, dissociation, saturability and specificity were demonstrated for insulin receptors of canine liver membranes and erythrocytes. Assay precision was evaluated by measuring interassay coefficient of variation (liver membrane = 25.0%; erythrocytes = 9.3%). Because the number of high-affinity receptor sites and high-affinity K$\sb{\rm D}$ were determined using physiological concentrations of insulin, they were considered to be more physiologically important than the total number of receptor sites, low-affinity K$\sb{\rm D}$ and Ke, which were derived using …

Factors Affecting Developmental College Readers' Abilities To Mobilize And Use Prior Knowledge., Rhonda Holt Atkinson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the study was to examine differences in comprehension scores and recall of expository text by developmental college readers following manipulation of traditional and technological factors affecting use of mobilized prior knowledge. This research differed from previous research in three ways. First, it endeavored to determine if a visible link between old and new knowledge would enhance comprehension and recall. Second, it compared traditional (verbal statements) and technological (computer-mediated) methods of linking prior knowledge and new information. Third, it featured the use of individual brainstorming as a means of mobilizing schemata. The literature review focused on theory and …
An Investigation Of Potential Sources Of Bias In Self-Report Job Analysis Data., Donald Martin Truxillo
An Investigation Of Potential Sources Of Bias In Self-Report Job Analysis Data., Donald Martin Truxillo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present research was an exploratory laboratory and field investigation of possible sources of bias in self-report job analysis data. Because of the similarity between task perceptions and job analysis data, the research into task perceptions was used as a starting point for the present study. In the laboratory study, 129 undergraduate psychology students were asked in Session 1 to complete measures of field independence, mental ability, intrinsic work orientation, and self-esteem. In Session 2, subjects were assigned to either a clerical or manufacturing task in which student confederates expressed either positive or negative cues about the task. Subjects then …

Effects Of Instruction In Use Of Sentence Connectives And Text Structure On Passage Recall., Edith Appell Slaton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of instruction in cause/effect text structure at both the macrostructure level or the microstructure level on fifth- and sixth-grade readers' recall of main ideas from scrambled and normal passages. Instruction at the macrostructure level was in how to construct a graphic organizer, that is, a selection of only key ideas from a passage arranged hierarchically and connected by lines that show how the ideas are related. Instruction at the microstructure level was in how to combine causally related sentences using the sentence connective because. Instruction was presented with six tutorial …
Correction Of Manganese Deficiency In Soybeans, Glycine Max (L.) Merr., David Paul Bligh
Correction Of Manganese Deficiency In Soybeans, Glycine Max (L.) Merr., David Paul Bligh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Soybeans, Glycine max (L.) Merr., cv. 'Centennial', grown on Iberia silty clay (fine, montmorillonitic, thermic Vertic Haplaquoll) responded to foliar-applied Mn (0.2 and 0.4 kg ha$\sp{-1}$ as Mn chelate, 12% Mn) and soil-applied Mn (15.3 and 30.6 kg ha$\sp{-1}$ as MnSO$\sb4\cdot$3H$\sb2$O, 27.3% Mn). Mn deficiency symptoms were corrected but reappeared in foliar-treated plots within three weeks. Symptoms disappeared following a soaking rain but reappeared as soil dried. A greenhouse investigation evaluated the effects of 12 levels of soil-applied Mn ranging from 0 to 20.5 mg Mn kg$\sp{-1}$ soil as MnSO$\sb4\cdot$3H$\sb2$O, 27.3% Mn, on growth of soybeans. Mn deficiency symptoms appeared …
Design And Evaluation Of Gas-Condensate Wells Using The Systems Analysis Approach., David Stephen Sutton
Design And Evaluation Of Gas-Condensate Wells Using The Systems Analysis Approach., David Stephen Sutton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The use of Systems Analysis for designing and evaluating wells flowing hydrocarbon mixtures seems to create no computational problems when considering the inflow components, i.e. reservoir and perforations. However, when a gas-condensate system is considered, the outflow component calculating the total pressure losses in the tubing creates a computational problem. This computational problem involves the estimation of the phase properties of the gas-condensate fluid. Thus, the fluid system undergoes phase changes as it moves up the tubing. Attempts by other authors have been made to overcome this by either using a single-phase or two-phase flow model. The single-phase flow model …
Feeding And Microspatial Relationships Of Meiobenthic Harpacticoid Copepods With Microbial Flora., Alan William Decho
Feeding And Microspatial Relationships Of Meiobenthic Harpacticoid Copepods With Microbial Flora., Alan William Decho
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Feeding processes and their relationship to microspatial patterns were examined for several harpacticoid species. Field evidences and laboratory radiolabel experiments suggest that diatoms comprise a major portion of the food resources ingested by harpacticoids. Bacteria and mucus-exopolymer secretions (associated with the bacteria and diatoms) are also ingested, coincidently while ingesting diatoms. Also, significant ontogenetic shifts in food resource utilization occur from naupliar to adult stages. Field grazing rate studies were conducted on an intertidal mudflat over different portions of a tidal cycle using several harpacticoid species (Scottolana canadensis, Microarthridion littorale, Paronychocamptus huntsmani). Highest grazing rates for S. canadensis occurred just …
An Experimental Investigation Into Carbon-Dioxide-Induced Organic Deposition., Josh Chia-Hsine Fu
An Experimental Investigation Into Carbon-Dioxide-Induced Organic Deposition., Josh Chia-Hsine Fu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Wettability change (or a relative permeability effect) has long been considered a mechanism for enhanced oil recovery. Reports show that adsorption of petroleum heavy ends, mainly asphaltenes and resins, onto a rock surface can alter its wettability. Reports also show that high concentrations of CO$\sb2$ will induce the formation of a solid phase in CO$\sb2$/crude mixtures. However, the propensity of a reservoir system for CO$\sb2$-induced hydrocarbon precipitation and how this deposition affects the rock wettability has not been yet investigated. Once variables such as oil composition, pressure, temperature, brine chemistry, and surface mineralogy are adequately defined it becomes possible to …

This study was designed to test the main effects and interaction effects of applicant sex, applicant physical attractiveness, rater sex, and rater sex-role stereotype on the ratings of applicants in the screening phase of undergraduate student admission procedures. The participants were undergraduate students in the allied health sciences at a regional university in the southeast. The experimental task consisted of rating hypothetical applicants on overall suitability, a series of adjectives which reflect personality characteristics of the applicant, and assigning causal attributions for the past performance of the candidate. Each subject evaluated four hypothetical applicants: attractive male, unattractive male, attractive female …
Physiological Abnormalities Related To Bulimic Behaviors And Physical Symptoms: Toward A Biobehavioral Analysis., Lisa Dee Hinz
Physiological Abnormalities Related To Bulimic Behaviors And Physical Symptoms: Toward A Biobehavioral Analysis., Lisa Dee Hinz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by secretive binge-eating and abnormal weight-control practices such as self-induced vomiting, and laxative abuse. To date, investigations of physiological abnormalities accompanying bulimia are recent, few in number, and descriptive in nature. Commonly reported physiological abnormalities have included: increased serum bicarbonate, usually in combination with decreased serum chloride; decreased serum potassium; and decreased hematocrit. Two correlations have provided preliminary evidence that bulimic behaviors are associated with physiological abnormalities. The present investigation attempted to describe more fully the relationships among bulimic behaviors, physiological abnormalities, and physical symptoms. Three separate models, representing different physiological systems: (1) potassium; …
