Use Of Multiple Time Series Analysis To Forecast Maintenance Manhour Requirement For The Chemical Process Industry., Helen Bostock
Use Of Multiple Time Series Analysis To Forecast Maintenance Manhour Requirement For The Chemical Process Industry., Helen Bostock
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It is hypothesized that chemical processing plant maintenance manhour requirement (the number of hours required to maintain a production facility at an optimal level) can be forecast. The hypothesis is supported by (1) a study of the independent variables which may impact the dependent variable, maintenance manhour requirement and (2) a comparative analysis of technological forecasting methods that suggested which methods might be most appropriate. Both econometric and statistical forecasting methods were considered. The philosophy inherent in each approach was recognized. A procedure for choosing a forecasting method to suit a given situation is outlined. Multiple time series analysis, supported …
Ray Theoretical Traveltime Inversion Of Seismic Data In Two-Dimensional Plane Dipping Layers., Yeadong Kim
Ray Theoretical Traveltime Inversion Of Seismic Data In Two-Dimensional Plane Dipping Layers., Yeadong Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A ray theoretical traveltime inversion method in two dimensional arbitrarily dipping layers has been developed and applied to synthetic and real field data. The method is based on Durbaum's formula and may be applied to single-fold as well as CMP raw data. The advantage of Durbaum's formula is that we can estimate dipping angles as well as accurate velocities in dipping layers. In addition, the number of traces which can be utilized for velocity estimations is drastically increased. Also, a statistical method can be used to estimate normal incident times (t$\sb{\rm o}$) and the take-off angles at the surface (B$\sb{\rm …
The Cemetery As A Cultural Manifestation: Louisiana Necrogeography., Tadashi Nakagawa
The Cemetery As A Cultural Manifestation: Louisiana Necrogeography., Tadashi Nakagawa
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cultural geography, in order to advance as a science, must stand on a deductive theory which is subject to empirical tests. This study establishes a scientific theory for geographical interpretation of cultural landscape by using Louisiana cemeteries as empirical objects. Based upon the assumption that, ultimately, only individual men can play a causative role in the creation of the cemetery landscape, a theory is constructed by examining man's action modeled on the practical syllogism. Operationally defined, culture is the expression of the individual's voluntary group identity that can be identified by comparing groups. A variety of group identities which are …
Maximal Subsemigroups Of Lie Groups That Are Total, Jimmie D. Lawson
Maximal Subsemigroups Of Lie Groups That Are Total, Jimmie D. Lawson
Faculty Publications
The major problem with which this paper is concerned is determining criteria that allow one to decide whether the subsemigroup generated by a subset B of a group G is all of G. Motivations for considering this problem arise from at least two sources. The first source concerns the program to develop a Lie theory of semigroups. Given a closed subsemigroup S of Lie group G, one defines the tangent object of S in the Lie algebra L(G) by L(S) = {xeL(G):exp(tx)∊S for all t≧0}. © 1987, Edinburgh Mathematical Society. On Weakly Symmetric Graphs Of Order Twice A Prime, Ying Cheng, James Oxley
On Weakly Symmetric Graphs Of Order Twice A Prime, Ying Cheng, James Oxley
Faculty Publications
A graph is weakly symmetric if its automorphism group is both vertex-transitive and edge-transitive. In 1971, Chao characterized all weakly symmetric graphs of prime order and showed that such graphs are also transitive on directed edges. In this paper we determine all weakly symmetric graphs of order twice a prime and show that these graphs too are directed-edge transitive. © 1987.
A Characterization Of The Ternary Matroids With No M(K4)-Minor, James G. Oxley
A Characterization Of The Ternary Matroids With No M(K4)-Minor, James G. Oxley
Faculty Publications
Brylawski identified the class of binary matroids with no minor isomorphic to M(K4) as being the class of series-parallel networks. From this he deduced that, for all such matroids M, the critical exponent c(M; 2) is at most 2. He also conjectured that a similar result is true over all finite fields GF(q). This paper examines the classes of ternary and GF(4)-representable matroids with no M(K4)-minor. The main result characterizes the former class by showing that, with one exception, the only non-trivial 3-connected members of this class are whirls or minors of the Steiner system S(5, 6, 12). This characterization …

We present various applications of recently developed techniques which are an interplay between the differential geometry and the theory of distributions. We apply them to the microlocal theory, derive the general order transport equations for the strength of wave fronts, obtain the values of the jumps of the general Nth-order derivatives of the harmonic functions across the potential layers, and present the explicit formulas for an arbitrary order derivative of functions of the radial distance r. © 1987.
Continuous Pythagoras Numbers For Rational Quadratic Forms, Charles N. Delzell
Continuous Pythagoras Numbers For Rational Quadratic Forms, Charles N. Delzell
Faculty Publications
We introduce the concept of the continuous Pythagoras number Pc(S) of a subset S of a commutative topological ring to be, roughly, the least number m ≤ ∞ such that the set of sums of squares of elements of S can be represented as sums of m squares of elements of S, by means of m continuous functions. Heilbronn had already shown that Pc(Q) = 4. Letting Ln(F) be the set of linear n-ary forms over the field F, we show that Pc(Ln(R)) = n. We then allow continuously varying nonnegative rational "weights" on the m square summands. If these …

Use Of Linear Semen Quality Score For Classification And Decision Making In Evaluation Of Individual Ejaculates Of Holstein Bulls, J. E. Chandler, R. W. Adkinson, J. W. Smith, A. M. Saxton
Faculty Publications
Four hundred seven ejaculates from 15 Holstein bulls collected from December 1984 to June 1985 were evaluated postthaw for viability characteristics (percent progressive motility at 0 h and after 3 h at 37°C incubation, percent intact acrosomal membrane after 3 h at 37°C incubation) and abnormal morphological characteristics [percent head (primary), midpiece, and tail (secondary) abnormalities]. Weighting coefficients for combining viability and abnormality characteristics were generated from between-bull and within-bull variance and covariance matrices. Two hundred ninety-eight additional ejaculates collected from July 1985 to February 1986 were added. Linear quality scores for 705 ejaculates (24 bulls) were the sum of …
Dimethylnitrosamine - Induced Neoplasms In F344 Male Rats With Various Manipulations Of The Mixed-Function-Oxidase System: Macroscopic, Microscopic, Ultrastructural, And Immunocytochemical Evaluation., John Michael Gliatto
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Aminopyrine and nitrite were administered to male F344 rats at concentrations of 1 mg each per ml drinking water as precursors of dimethylnitrosamine (DMN). Rats were divided into groups based on manipulations of the mixed-function-oxidase (MFO) system including: partial hepatectomy, subcutaneous injections of aminoacetonitrile (AAN), phenobarbital (plus 1.75% ethanol) and 1.75% ethanol. Rats were killed at 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 24 weeks, and 36 weeks following initiation of the carcinogenic regimen. DMN-induced neoplasms occurred in the liver, kidneys, and lungs. The number and types of tumors, as well as the target organ affected depended on the particular MFO system manipulation. …
The Danish Cadastral Survey Of St. Croix, 1733-1754 (Virgin Islands)., Daniel Price Hopkins
The Danish Cadastral Survey Of St. Croix, 1733-1754 (Virgin Islands)., Daniel Price Hopkins
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation presents the history of the original cadastral survey of St. Croix by the Danish West India and Guinea Company in the early eighteenth century. St. Croix, the largest of the United States Virgin Islands, is distinguished by a remarkably regular and rectangular pattern of roads and properties, which appears to have had no parallel in the Lesser Antilles or Denmark. This is a case study of how colonial administrators approached the problem of the orderly alienation and demarcation of previously undivided land. The study is based mainly on original manuscript Company records in the Danish State Archive in …
Three-Dimensional Turbulent Flowfield In A Turbine Stirred Tank., Sheng-Yang Ju
Three-Dimensional Turbulent Flowfield In A Turbine Stirred Tank., Sheng-Yang Ju
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Solutions of conservation equations for the three-dimensional turbulent flowfield in agitated vessels were developed. Results showed that the Navier-Stokes equations with the nonisotropic k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model described the three-dimensional velocity profiles and turbulence kinetic energy and its dissipation rate for the flowfield. The nonisotropic model considered the rotational effect on turbulence with a turbulent-Richardson-number term and accounted for the important baffling effects through the nonisotropy of the viscosity. The solutions were validated with the experimental data for velocities and turbulence parameters. An isotropic k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model for rotational flow was also used. This modified isotropic k-$\varepsilon$ model proved to be …
The Effect Of Micromorphological Development On The Elastic Moduli Of Fly Ash-Lime Stabilized Bentonite., Gokhan I. Baykal
The Effect Of Micromorphological Development On The Elastic Moduli Of Fly Ash-Lime Stabilized Bentonite., Gokhan I. Baykal
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The mineralogical and micromorphological changes occurring in fly ash-lime stabilized bentonite were observed and related to changes in elastic moduli of the stabilized mixture. Compacted fly ash, fly ash-lime, bentonite-lime, bentonite-fly ash, and bentonite-fly ash-lime mixtures were prepared and cured at 23$\sp\circ$C and 50$\sp\circ$C, for 1, 28, 90 and 180 days. The development of microstructure and cementitous crystals were observed by a scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectrum analyzer and a X-Ray diffractometer. The elastic moduli and strengths were obtained from unconsolidated undrained triaxial and unconfined compressive strength tests. The physical test results were compared with changes observed by …
Occupational Ethos Of Executive Directors Of State Councils On Vocational Education., Michael B. Moon
Occupational Ethos Of Executive Directors Of State Councils On Vocational Education., Michael B. Moon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The fundamental purpose of this study was to describe the occupational ethos of Executive Directors of State Councils on Vocational Education. As the literature concerning education-related occupational ethos is sparse, the study was an effort to contribute to the literature and to provide an understanding of the occupation of Executive Director of State Councils on Vocational Education. The description of the ethos was derived from two significant viewpoints--orientations and sentiments exhibited by the executive directors. Collection of data for this study was accomplished through two means. The first method involved elite interviewing of a sample of 15 current executive directors …
The Effects Of Ratee Job Experience, Performance Variability, And Rater Cognitive Complexity On Performance Rating Accuracy., Frank Allen Adair
The Effects Of Ratee Job Experience, Performance Variability, And Rater Cognitive Complexity On Performance Rating Accuracy., Frank Allen Adair
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Research indicates that ratee job experience and performance variability can affect performance judgments and causal attributions (Leventhal et al., 1977; Fusilier & Hitt, 1983; Scott & Hammer, 1975). When prototype expectations concerning ratee characteristics are not met, raters reacting to the cognitive inconsistency may distort ratee performance information (DeNisi, Cafferty, & Meglino, 1984). Because cognitively complex raters view behavior in a multidimensional manner (Schneier, 1977), not through a simplified schemata, cognitive complexity's possible effect on rating accuracy under cognitively inconsistent conditions was investigated. In an initial pilot study, 147 undergraduate volunteers rated the expected performance variability of a professor with …

Somaclonal Variation In Hibiscus Acetosella Welw. Ex Hiern: Altered Fertility And Floral Ontogeny., James Robert Ault
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A study was undertaken to examine fecundity and floral ontogeny in wild type (WT) and tissue culture-derived (TC) plants of Hibiscus acetosella Welw. ex Hiern. Twenty-eight plants regenerated in vitro from somatic embryos were outplanted and established in the greenhouse, as were three WT plants from seed. The TC and WT plants were self-pollinated. Nine of the TC plants were self-fertile but exhibited a reduction in fruit set and seed set when compared to WT. Days to maturity for fertile fruit varied significantly among TC plants. There was no correlation of days to maturity and number of seed set. Days …
Production And Evaluation Of Antisera And Monoclonal Antibodies Directed Against The Serovar-Specific Lipopolysaccharide Antigens Of Vibrio Cholerae., Linda Benton Adams
Production And Evaluation Of Antisera And Monoclonal Antibodies Directed Against The Serovar-Specific Lipopolysaccharide Antigens Of Vibrio Cholerae., Linda Benton Adams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Vibrio cholerae is typed serologically on the basis of somatic O-antigens. The serovar-specific antigens A, B, and C of V. cholerae O1 are located in the polysaccharide (PS) moiety of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the cell wall, but the exact structure and composition of these antigens are unknown. Presently, V. cholerae non-O1 serovars are differentiated serologically by two independent typing systems. Each system utilizes whole cell vaccines which result in typing sera containing serovar-specific, anti-PS activity and non-specific, cross-reacting activities. Serovar-specific anti-PS sera were produced in rabbits immunized with PS extracted from selected vaccine strains of V. cholerae O1 and …
Effects Of Riverine Barriers On Genetic Differentiation Of Amazonian Forest Undergrowth Birds (Peru)., Angelo Paul Capparella
Effects Of Riverine Barriers On Genetic Differentiation Of Amazonian Forest Undergrowth Birds (Peru)., Angelo Paul Capparella
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The high frequency with which rivers delimit phenotypically differentiated bird taxa is unique to Amazonia, where major rivers often form the boundaries between allospecies and subspecies pairs of understory terra firme forest birds. In contrast, many such forest species with life history traits similar to these differentiated forms show no variation in plumage across even the largest rivers. To determine whether such species are nonetheless genetically differentiated, I obtained tissue samples from populations of forest understory birds from opposite banks of the Napo and Amazon rivers of northeastern Peru. These included three species that are not phenotypically differentiated across the …
Effects Of Interaction Between Red Rice And Two Rice Cultivars On Morphological, Physiological And Ecological Characteristics., Jairo Clavijo
Effects Of Interaction Between Red Rice And Two Rice Cultivars On Morphological, Physiological And Ecological Characteristics., Jairo Clavijo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Germination, emergence, and early seedling development patterns were analyzed for red rice (Oryza sativa L.) and the rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars Mars, Saturn, Lemont and Bellemont. Red rice had the highest germination percentage, fastest emergence rate, and earliest development of both shoots and roots. These results suggest that the competitive ability of red rice is based on these characteristics which enable it to preempt more resources at early stages of stand development. Interaction between red rice and Lemont or Mars was evaluated by comparing morphological and physiological characteristics of these plants when grown in pure stands and in 50:50 …
The Impact Of The American Presence On Germans And German-American Grass Roots Relations In Germany, 1950-1960., Dewey Arthur Browder
The Impact Of The American Presence On Germans And German-American Grass Roots Relations In Germany, 1950-1960., Dewey Arthur Browder
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study is primarily concerned with the years 1950-1960, but the period 1945-1949 is also addressed, because many of the policies and institutions introduced to democratize Germany immediately after World War II were carried forward. The official position on both sides during the 1950s was that cooperation was of the essence. In the beginning, the Americans believed that the virtues of democracy could best be cultivated in the German consciousness if the Germans themselves implemented democratic programs under broad, philosophical guidelines, while simultaneously observing Americans and American ideas in practice. This study points out that the Germans accepted the guidelines …
Cognitive Strategy Training Effects On Reading Comprehension In Learning-Disabled Readers., Erin Cuccia Agostini
Cognitive Strategy Training Effects On Reading Comprehension In Learning-Disabled Readers., Erin Cuccia Agostini
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was conducted to investigate the hypothesis that learning disabled children with reading deficits demonstrate a "production deficiency" by failing to spontaneously employ appropriate cognitive strategies in reading situations. Moreover, it was anticipated that providing them with explicit instruction regarding these strategies would improve their comprehension. Thirty learning disabled seventh- and eighth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of three training conditions: (a) summarization, (b) self-questioning, and (c) control. The effectiveness of the training strategies was assessed by having students write an 80-word summary and answer a 10-item multiple choice comprehension test on each of two passages during three …
The Testing Of A Job Performance Model For Retail Salespeople., Robert Paul Bush
The Testing Of A Job Performance Model For Retail Salespeople., Robert Paul Bush
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Over the years, researchers have devoted significant efforts towards conceptualizing and empirically investigating all facets of the work process. In order to better understand this issue at the retail level, a major question was addressed, that is, what are the aspects relating to performance of retail salespeople. Previous approaches to explain the performance behavior of salespeople have primarily been centered in the industrial sales area. The development and testing of empirical research designs directed toward retail salespeople remained a neglected topic in the marketing literature. The primary goal of this research was to derive a framework for the explanation of …
Rebirth Through Narrative: John Bunyan's Autobiographies ("Grace Abounding To The Chief Of Sinners")., Constance A. Douglas
Rebirth Through Narrative: John Bunyan's Autobiographies ("Grace Abounding To The Chief Of Sinners")., Constance A. Douglas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
John Bunyan, while in Bedford gaol, composed two autobiographical narratives, one published in 1666, titled Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and a second, published posthumously in 1765, titled A Relation of the Imprisonment of Mr. John Bunyan. Since its recovery, the Relation has been published as the concluding section of Grace Abounding, seemingly suggesting that the doubting sinner of Grace Abounding demonstrates his assurance of salvation by becoming the confident spokesman for dissent in the Relation. In this study, however, I argue that the Relation is Bunyan's first self-construction from prison and Grace Abounding the second; thus the …

Crime And Punishment In The Royal Navy: Discipline On The Leeward Islands Station, 1784-1812 (England)., John D. Byrn Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is based primarily on the manuscript sources pertaining to the Leeward Islands station between 1784 and 1812 found in the Public Record Office. Its thesis is quite simple: Discipline in the Royal Navy in the age of sail was maintained in much the same fashion that law and order was enforced in the localities of eighteenth-century England. In short, justice afloat was administered according to the principles and practices used in the system of criminal law ashore.
Molecular Cloning And Sequencing Of The Bacillus Stearothermophilus 6-Phosphofructo-1-Kinase Gene And Of A Partial Rabbit Muscle 6-Phosphofructo-1-Kinase Complementary-Dna., Brent Arthur French
Molecular Cloning And Sequencing Of The Bacillus Stearothermophilus 6-Phosphofructo-1-Kinase Gene And Of A Partial Rabbit Muscle 6-Phosphofructo-1-Kinase Complementary-Dna., Brent Arthur French
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A system is presented for determining the relationships between structure and function in the allosteric enzyme 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase (PFK). The ATP-dependent phosphorylation of fructose 6-phosphate to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate catalyzed by PFK is the first reaction unique to the glycolytic pathway. The structure-function relationships in PFK can now be addressed by site-specific mutagenesis. This is a method for directly testing hypotheses concerning the functions of individual amino acids in a protein molecule. The main body of this dissertation is composed of three sections. The first two sections describe the development of a system by which the structure-function relationships in Bacillus stearothermophilus PFK …
