A Description Of The Meaning-Making Strategies Reported By Proficient Readers And Writers., Sarah H. Martin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to develop a description of the cognitive strategies reported by proficient readers and writers as they completed a variety of reading and writing tasks. Seven above-average, twelfth-grade students were selected as subjects from teacher recommendations and standardized test scores. Each subject was involved in five data collection sessions: (a) a writing assessment/think aloud practice session, (b) writing a reflexive task, (c) writing an extensive task, (d) reading a concrete text, and (e) reading an abstract text. All sessions were held with subjects individually. The data collection techniques included: (a) recording the thoughts subjects reported …
On The Nature And Origin Of Microporosity In Micritic Limestones., Stephen Oakley Moshier
On The Nature And Origin Of Microporosity In Micritic Limestones., Stephen Oakley Moshier
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The matrix and micritic components of "chalky" limestones feature well-disseminated pores with diameters of 5-10$\mu$m. SEM studies of porous micrites reveal numerous microporosity types, including: (1) primary intercrystalline and interparticle micropores, and (2) solution-enhanced intercrystalline, moldic and vug micropores. During early diagenesis, carbonate is transfered from particles to blocky micrite and microspar cements growing in adjacent micropores. Microporosity may be retained if cementation is arrested shortly after the stabilization process is complete. Primary, intercrystalline microporosity characterizes micritic limestones in the Shuaiba Fm. (L. Cretaceous) at Sajaa field in Sharjah, U.A.E. Calcite rhombs composing matrix average 4-6 $\mu$m in diameter. Matrix …

A Critical Examination Of The Mythological And Symbolic Elements Of Two Modern Science Fiction Series: "Star Trek" And "Doctor Who"., Gwendolyn Marie Olivier
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Carl Gustav Jung and Joseph Campbell both believe that a living mythology is a necessary factor in a viable civilization. According to these two scholars it is the self-actualized individual who is the key element in a healthy society. The purpose of a mythology for Jung and Campbell is to provide the individual with a set of symbols that will assist him in the process of self-realization. Jung believed that the major source of mythology in today's world is dreams, but he acknowledged the fact that anything which provided the unconscious mind with the appropriate symbols could function on a …

This new system has several desirable features: (1) the system is easy to operate; (2) the system works with any round shape of ASTM standard specimen; (3) the system works with a constant true strain rate or any form of strain rate; and (4) the system can be controlled to pause or stop at any pre-selected time or amount of true axial strain. Three types of materials, electrical grade iron, austenitic stainless steel, and …
Gallium-Arsenide Film Formation From Low Temperature Chloroaluminate Melts., Steven Paul Wicelinski
Gallium-Arsenide Film Formation From Low Temperature Chloroaluminate Melts., Steven Paul Wicelinski
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Prospects of electrochemically forming layers of the III-V semiconductor GaAs from room temperature chloroaluminate melts (AlCl$\sb3$:1-butylpyridinium chloride (BPC) or AlCl$\sb3$:1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride (MEIC)) are investigated. Prior to codeposition experiments, electrochemical behaviors of gallium and arsenic species were investigated by voltammetry, potentiometry and coulometry, and the complexation discussed in acid-base terms. At room temperature, deposition of Ga(O) was possible from acidic but not basic melts, whereas deposition of As(O) was achieved from acidic, basic and neutral melts. Potentiometry of Ga(I) species as a function of melt acidity indicates that GaCl$\sb2\sp-$ may be the predominant lower valence gallium species in the basic regime. …
Cerebroprotective Activity Of U-50488h: Relationship To Interactions With Excitatory Amino Acids And Calcium., Marlene Camacho Ochoa
Cerebroprotective Activity Of U-50488h: Relationship To Interactions With Excitatory Amino Acids And Calcium., Marlene Camacho Ochoa
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The mechanism underlying the anticonvulsant and cerebroprotective activity of U-50488H was evaluated using $\sp{45}$Ca$\sp{++}$ uptake in rat Ficoll purified synaptosomes, ($\sp3$H)-2-deoxyglucose uptake in selected mouse brain regions, ($\sp3$H)kainic acid binding to mouse forebrain synaptic membranes and incidence of KA-induced lesions in the CA3 region of the mouse hippocampus. U-50488H causes reduction in K$\sp+$-evoked $\sp{45}$Ca$\sp{++}$ uptake. These effects are comparable to those of the calcium channel blockers verapamil and nifedipine and seem to be related to calcium dependent mechanisms. Changes in saturability, specificity and dissociation constant values of kainic acid receptor binding were demonstrated in the presence of U-50488H at concentrations …
Effects Of Crude Oil Composition And Alcohol Augmentation On Transient Interfacial Phenomena In Alkaline-Water/Crude-Oil Systems., Vivien Johan Cambridge
Effects Of Crude Oil Composition And Alcohol Augmentation On Transient Interfacial Phenomena In Alkaline-Water/Crude-Oil Systems., Vivien Johan Cambridge
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The microscopic phenomena which occur at the alkaline-water/crude-oil interface greatly affect the potential for success of the alkaline water flooding process. The propensity of crude oils to emulsify and the ability of the oil to coalesce improves the chance for successful oil bank formation and leads to better recovery efficiency. Interfacial phenomena are affected by interfacial rheological properties and interfacial tensions. This research investigates the interfacial behavior of alkaline-water/crude-oil systems in three parts. In part one, a new method and apparatus are designed for the measurement of interfacial shear viscosity (IFSV). The method is applied to study the effect of …

Liquid Crystals From Poly(4,4'-Methoxybiphenylyl Methacrylate)., R. Duran, D. Guillon, Ph Gramain, A. Skoulios
Faculty Publications
Side-chain liquid crystalline poly(4,4'-biphenylyl methacrylate) was studied by x-ray diffraction. Three smectic phases were described using a ribbon-like structural model for the polymer chain. In the smectic S//P phase, ribbons lie flat on their sides to form layers with a spacing equal to the thickness of the ribbons. In the smectic S//A phase, the ribbons stand upright giving layers with a thickness corresponding to the length of one extended monomeric unit. In the ordered smectic S//O phase, the layer thickness also corresponds to one extended repeat unit, and the pendant groups are arranged according to a two-dimensional oblique lattice. The …

An 18-week experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of changing from incandescent to fluorescent lighting on egg production, egg weight, fertility, and hatchability of end of lay broiler breeders housed in an open-sided house. Forty-eight-week-old Cobb feather-sexed broiler breeders were housed, 30 females and 3 males per pen, in a total of 28 pens. Incandescent lights had been used previously, so pens were randomly assigned to either fluorescent or incandescent lights giving 20 lx of light at bird level. Lights used were 60 W incandescent and 22 W fluorescent cool-white circular. Body weight and egg production were measured weekly, …
Effect Of Dietary Buffer Additions On Gain, Efficiency, Duodenal Ph, And Copper Concentration In Liver Of Eimeria Acervulina-Infected Chicks., M. C. Fox, D. R. Brown, L. L. Southern
Effect Of Dietary Buffer Additions On Gain, Efficiency, Duodenal Ph, And Copper Concentration In Liver Of Eimeria Acervulina-Infected Chicks., M. C. Fox, D. R. Brown, L. L. Southern
Faculty Publications
Three experiments were conducted with broiler chicks to investigate the effect of dietary additions of NaHCO3(1%), A1(OH)3(.5%), kaolin(1%), A1(OH)2NaCO3(.23%), CaCO3(.37%), and MgO(1%) on gain, efficiency, duodenal pH, and liver Cu concentration of Eimeria acervulina-infected chicks. Experimental coccidial infection consistently reduced chick gain, efficiency, and duodenal pH, but it increased liver Cu concentration of chicks fed excess Cu. Sodium bicarbonate addition improved chick gain and efficiency slightly, whereas the MgO addition reduced these performance criteria. Sodium bicarbonate improved gain more in coccidiosis-infected chicks than in uninfected chicks, but it failed to alleviate, to any extent, the coccidiosis-induced liver Cu increase of …

Effect Of Seasonal Changes In Leydig Cell Number On The Volume Of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum In Leydig Cells And Intratesticular Testosterone Content In Stallions, L. Johnson, D. L. Thompson
Faculty Publications
Testes from 47 adult (4-20 years) stallions obtained in November-January (non-breeding season) and 41 adult stallions obtained in May-July (breeding season) were perfused with glutaraldehyde, placed in osmium and embedded in Epon 812. Percentage Leydig cell cytoplasm or nuclei in the testis was determined by point counting of 0.5 μm sections under bright-field microscopy. Testes from 6 randomly selected horses per season were processed for electron microscopy. The volume (ml) of SER/testis was calculated from the % SER in the cytoplasm % Leydig cell cytoplasm, and parenchymal volume. Number of Leydig cells was calculated from the % nuclei, parenchymal volume, …

Core-exciton-induced desorption of O and H from MgO(100) and MgO(111) has been observed using photon excitation energies spanning the O K edge. Electron-yield data from partially oxidized Mg implies that these states are localized in the near-surface region. O and H desorption results from the decay of different O core-exciton states as well as the states produced by interband transitions. The O excitonic levels are interpreted in terms of their related atomic origin. © 1987 The American Physical Society.

Proton NMR has revealed two modes of structural heterogeneity in the monomeric hemoglobin I of Chironomus thummi thummi, CTT I; rotational disorder caused by a 180° rotation of the heme about the α, γ‐meso axis (primary heterogeneity), which varies for each preparation or reconstitution of this hemogobin, and a ‘silent’ amino acid replacement [Thr/Ala exchange in position 98(FG4)] in the vicinity of the heme group, which is invariant under all experimental conditions. The heme rotational disorder (primary heterogeneity) can be removed by reconstitution of CTT I with the symmetrical protoheme III. The secondary splitting is not affected; the ratio of …
Mechanism Of Attachment Of Swarm Cells Of Thiothrix Nivea., J. M. Larkin, R. Nelson
Mechanism Of Attachment Of Swarm Cells Of Thiothrix Nivea., J. M. Larkin, R. Nelson
Faculty Publications
Swarm cells of Thiothrix nivea were found to possess a group of fimbriae at one pole. The other pole either was bare or possessed from one to three fimbriae. By using this polarity as a marker, it was found that the initial step in attachment of swarm cells involves the fimbriated pole and that this initial step is followed by the production of holdfast material.

Intracellular Calcium And Sodium In Hypertensive Patients, Richard S. Cooper, Nasreen Shamsi, Sherry Katz
Faculty Publications
Untreated subjects with mild to moderate hypertension were compared with normotensive controls recruited from the same ambulatory screening clinic. All subjects were black. Resting levels of cytosolic free calcium were estimated in washed platelets with the fluorescent intracellular probe fura 2, and sodium and potassium were measured in red blood cells. Calcium levels were 21 % higher in the hypertensive subjects (p = 0.02), and a 9% increase in sodium was observed in an expanded sample (p = 0.04). Neither intracellular calcium nor intracellular sodium had a significant linear correlation with blood pressure when hypertensive subjects and controls were examined …
