On The Thermodynamics Of Quantum-Electrodynamic Frequency Shifts, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

A paper by Barton (ibid., vol.20, p.879, 1987) comments on some of Ford et al.'s recent work in this general area and takes issue with some of their conclusions. Ford et al. point out that Barton's reinterpretation of his own previous work actually serves to support their conclusions. In particular, he is making extensive use of thermodynamic concepts (free energy, thermodynamic perturbation theory, . . .) which were introduced for the first time into this area in the papers by Ford et al.

Backfilling Canals To Mitigate Wetland Dredging In Louisiana Coastal Marshes, Christopher Neill, R. Eugene Turner Nov 1987

Backfilling Canals To Mitigate Wetland Dredging In Louisiana Coastal Marshes, Christopher Neill, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Returning canal spoil banks into canals, or backfilling, is used in Louisiana marshes to mitigate damage caused by dredging for oil and gas extraction. We evaluated 33 canals backfilled through July 1984 to assess the success of habitat restoration. We determined restoration success by examining canal depth, vegetation recolonization, and regraded spoil bank soils after backfilling. Restoration success depended on: marsh type, canal location, canal age, marsh soil characteristics, the presence or absence of a plug at the canal mouth, whether mitigation was on- or off-site, and dredge operator performance.

Backfilling reduced median canal depth from 2.4 to 1.1 m, …

Floating Marshes In Louisiana: Substrate And Hydrolic Characterization, Christopher M. Swarzenski Aug 1987

Floating Marshes In Louisiana: Substrate And Hydrolic Characterization, Christopher M. Swarzenski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Substrate characteristics and vertical mat movement were determined for maidencane (Panicum hemitomon), bulltongue(Sagittaria falcata) and wire-grass (Spartina patens) dominated marshes located progressively closer to the Gulf of Mexico in Barataria Basin, Louisiana, at Lake Boeuf, Lake Salvador and Bayou des Rigolettes, respectively. The near-surface substrate of the marshes at Lake Boeuf and Lake Salvador was characterized by high mean organic matter content (> 90%, >80%, gig dry weight x 100) and low mean mineral densities (0.007, 0.013 glee) respectively. Mean dry bulk density at these two marshes was low (0.065, 0.068 glee, respectively). Mean dry bulk densities were highest at …

"Can You Tell Me Who My People Are?" Ethnic Identity Among The Hispanic-Indian People Of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Mary B. Van Rheenen Aug 1987

"Can You Tell Me Who My People Are?" Ethnic Identity Among The Hispanic-Indian People Of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Mary B. Van Rheenen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the puzzle of ethnic identity for the Hispanic-Indian people of Sabine Parish. Because their unique history precludes the clear-cut ethnic identification available to immigrant American groups, the community shares the awkward social position of both the remnant Native American groups and mixed-blood communities collectively known as American Isolates. The issue of group identity for members of the Zwolle-Ebarb community has been further confounded by the internal and external stigmas attached to aspects of the group's origins as well as the negative image associated with the group's home territory. After the people have been identified historically and genealogically, …

Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages From Mexican Continental Shelves, Maria De La Luz Mata Apr 1987

Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages From Mexican Continental Shelves, Maria De La Luz Mata

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The recent benthic foraminifera 1 fauna of the continental margins of Mexico (Gulf of Campeche and Gulf of Tehuantepec) was studied. Surficial sediment samples (lOcc) were collected using a Shipeck dredge and were stained with Sudan Black "B" in order to differentiate the living fauna from the death assemblage. In the 41 samples from the Gulf of Campeche, 279 species were found in the total assemblage in water depths ranging from 9 to 586 m. In the 22 samples in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, 132 species were identified from the total assemblage in water depths of 20 to 180 m. …

Free Energy For Harmonically Bound Fermions In A Magnetic Field, Lipo Wang, R. F. O'Connell Mar 1987

Free Energy For Harmonically Bound Fermions In A Magnetic Field, Lipo Wang, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

An analytic expression is obtained for the free energy of fermions bound in an anisotropic harmonic potential in the presence of an arbitrary magnetic field, at a finite temperature. The specific heat and the magnetic moment are readily calculated. The results consist of two parts, a steady part and an oscillatory one. The latter is similar to the well known de Haas-van Alphen oscillation, but persists in the absence of a magnetic field. Application of the results to the nuclear shell model and surface effects of solids are briefly discussed. © 1987, IOP Publishing Ltd.

Spoil Banks: Effects On A Coastal Marsh Water-Level Regime, Erick M. Swenson, R. Eugene Turner Jan 1987

Spoil Banks: Effects On A Coastal Marsh Water-Level Regime, Erick M. Swenson, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Above- and below-ground water-level fluctuations were measured in the marshes south of New Orleans, Louisiana, between November 1982 and December 1983. The purpose of the program was to defme the basic marsh water-level regime and to investigate how canal spoil banks may influence the water-level regime. Two study areas were used: (1) a control area, defined as a section of marsh with unrestricted hydrologic connection to an adjacent bayou; and, (2) a partially-impounded area, defined as an area with limited hydrologic connection to an adjacent bayou due to the presence of dredged canal spoil banks. Data sources included marsh water …

Determinants Of Joint Venture Performance: A Study Of International Joint Ventures In The United States (Japan, Europe)., Winston Kwashie Awadzi Jan 1987

Determinants Of Joint Venture Performance: A Study Of International Joint Ventures In The United States (Japan, Europe)., Winston Kwashie Awadzi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focuses on: (1) the motivations for international joint venture (IJV) formation in the United States; (2) the bases and outcomes of bargaining between partners; and (3) the relationship between the outcomes of bargaining and joint venture performance. Forty U.S.-based joint ventures formed by U.S. firms with Japanese (22) and European (18) partners were studied. These IJVs operated in the manufacturing sector of the economy. The results of the study show that both U.S. government regulations and/or attitudes (GRA) and business-related factors were significant motivators for IJV formation. However, business-related factors were much stronger motivators than GRA for the …

Use Of A Rainfall Runoff Model To Simulate The Effects Of Urbanization On The Hydrologic Regimen Of Ward Creek Drainage Basin, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Nancy Tucker Baker Jan 1987

Use Of A Rainfall Runoff Model To Simulate The Effects Of Urbanization On The Hydrologic Regimen Of Ward Creek Drainage Basin, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Nancy Tucker Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The DR3M (Distributed Routing Rainfall-Runoff Model) was used to simulate annual flood series for various stages of urban development in the Ward Creek drainage basin above the Government Street bridge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Synthesis of flood hydrographs by DR3M illustrates a feasible method for estimating flood characteristics in watersheds for various degrees of existing or projected development. Changes in percent effective impervious area, and overland and drainage channel roughness coefficients were varied for the Ward Creek watershed to simulate various stages of urban development. Presently (1986) Ward Creek has 27 percent effective impervious area. Annual flood series were synthesized …
