An Object Oriented Paradigm For Requirements Specifications., David W. Cordes
An Object Oriented Paradigm For Requirements Specifications., David W. Cordes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Software engineering defines a formalized five-step life-cycle for software development. These steps are: requirements specification, design, implementation, testing and maintenance. The requirements specification phase of the software development life-cycle is responsible for determining the functionality of the proposed system. In this work, a methodology is developed that enhances the generation of accurate requirements specifications, utilizing an object-oriented paradigm. This research realizes four objectives. First, the process of information transferral between the user and the specification team is enhanced. Second, a working base of knowledge containing the domain-specific information within the initial requirements document is established for use by the specification …

A Comparison Of Four Multiattribute Utility Function Elicitation Procedures For Preference Predictions., Phillip C. Fry
A Comparison Of Four Multiattribute Utility Function Elicitation Procedures For Preference Predictions., Phillip C. Fry
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Multiattribute utility analysis is a set of formal procedures designed to assist a decision maker in resolving problems requiring tradeoffs among competing objectives. The approach elicits a multiattribute utility function (MAUF) intended to represent the decision maker's preferences for multivariate alternatives. While different MAUF assessment technologies are available, few studies have been conducted that compare assessment techniques. The purpose of this research was to investigate the predictive ability of four MAUF elicitation procedures. Keeney-Raiffa (KR), holistic orthogonal parameter estimation (HOPE), simple multiattribute rating technique (SMART), and mathematical programming elicited MAUFs were compared in terms of (1) ordinal preference predictions, (2) …
Free Radical Chemistry In Smoke From Household And Cellulosic Materials, Automobile Fuel, And Perfluoropolymers., Thomas M. Lachocki
Free Radical Chemistry In Smoke From Household And Cellulosic Materials, Automobile Fuel, And Perfluoropolymers., Thomas M. Lachocki
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Free radicals have been detected in smoke resulting from the combustion of household and cellulosic materials, automobile fuel, and perfluoropolymers. Materials were pyrolyzed by a variety of methods, but the most reproducible results were obtained by heating the materials in a heated quartz tube. The smoke was reacted with $\alpha$-phenyl-N-t-butylnitrone (PBN), and the resulting nitroxide spin adducts were detected by electron spin resonance. Oxygen-centered radical spin adducts predominate, lesser amounts of carbon-centered radical spin adducts and an oxidation product of PBN were also observed when smoke from several cellulosic materials, dried exterior paint, polyethylene, rubber, and automobile exhaust was allowed …

Information Acquisition And Decision-Making In Creditors' Decision Environment., Pao-Chuan Lin
Information Acquisition And Decision-Making In Creditors' Decision Environment., Pao-Chuan Lin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study identified the financial information used by the loan officers in a commercial lending context. The identification of information acquisition made it possible for the researcher to verify whether the manipulated financial information in the experiment was processed by the subjects. As a consequence, the inference concerning the impact of the treatment on loan officers' decisions could be more conclusive. Most real decision tasks are similar to a situation in which the decision maker has to search for and decide which information to use rather than conforming to an a priori decision model specified by the researcher. The subjects …
Effects Of Aluminum On Magnesium Uptake By Ryegrass Lolium Multiflorum Lam., Zdenko Rengel
Effects Of Aluminum On Magnesium Uptake By Ryegrass Lolium Multiflorum Lam., Zdenko Rengel
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Aluminum impairs uptake of Mg$\sp{2+}$ by plants grown in soil or in nutrient solution, but mechanisms of this inhibition are not understood. Experiments were prepared to elucidate the effects of pH (6.0 vs. 4.2) and Al$\sp{3+}$ activity (0, 6.6, and 26 umol L$\sp{-1}$) in nutrient solution on the kinetics of net Mg$\sp{2+}$ uptake by 23-day-old plants of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam., cultivars Gulf and Wilo). The kinetics of Mg$\sp{2+}$ uptake was resolved in: (1) a transpiration-dependent uptake component, (2) a metabolically-mediated, discontinuous saturable component that is Al$\sp{3+}$-sensitive and 4-(chloromercuri)benzenesulfonic acid (PCMBS)-resistant, and (3) a linear, carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP)-resistant, Al$\sp{3+}$-sensitive …

A Longitudinal Examination Of The Structure, Membership And Benefits Of The Louisiana Association Of Principals., David Strauss
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the structure, membership, and benefits provided by the Louisiana Association of Principals. A review of related literature revealed a lack of standards whereby state-level educational organizations could be systematically examined. In this study it was hypothesized that by providing benefits to members, the Louisiana Association of Principals could increase its membership. It was also hypothesized that in order to gain new members, the Louisiana Association of Principals had to effectively deal with internal and external pressures. All of the records of the organization were reviewed. Interviews were conducted with key leaders. Ineffective …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Gold, Silver, And Copper Cluster Compounds., Judith Ann Schuerman
Synthesis And Characterization Of Gold, Silver, And Copper Cluster Compounds., Judith Ann Schuerman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Seven new coinage metal cluster compounds were synthesized and their single-crystal X-ray structures were determined. The novel gold cluster, hexakis(o-methyldithiobenzoato)hexagold(I), (Au$\sb6$ (o-CH$\sb3$C$\sb6$H$\sb4$CS$\sb2$)$\sb6$), has six gold atoms that are coplanar to within 0.14A. Each gold(I) forms two nearly linear bonds to bridging ligands alternately above and below the cluster plane. In addition to the multitude of Au-Au interactions within the hexameric cluster, a close intermolecular contact exists, thereby forming chains of these hexamers. The other gold cluster is a dimer, bis(2,4,6-trimethyldithiobenzoato)digold(I), (Au$\sb2\{$2,4,6-(CH$\sb3$)$\sb3$C$\sb6$H$\sb2$CS$\sb2\}\sb2$). However, there are three crystallographically independent dimers in the unit cell which are positioned such that a gold atom …
The Temporality Of Mediacy: The Time Of Narrators In Short, First-Person Fiction., John Marlon Allison Jr
The Temporality Of Mediacy: The Time Of Narrators In Short, First-Person Fiction., John Marlon Allison Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study outlines a new theory of time in first-person narrative fiction based on the concept "mediacy." By applying a phenomenological understanding of time to narrators of first-person fiction, the study draws a distinction between narration and narratization. Narration refers to the narrative act, the act of telling. This study contends that although a literary narrative may serve as record of past events, it is primarily a notation of the narrative act. The narrative act is a unified experience that exhibits a structure of beginning, middle, and end, which is notated in a literary text. A narratization, in contrast, refers …

Constancy Of (Acoustic) Relative Timing Measures In The Fluent Utterances Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers., Phoebe Cooper Weaver
Constancy Of (Acoustic) Relative Timing Measures In The Fluent Utterances Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers., Phoebe Cooper Weaver
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Stuttering and nonstuttering children's articulatory timing abilities as measured by duration differences were compared as rate, stress and phonetic complexity were varied and both internal and external timing sources were used. Use of external timing sources resulted in within normal limit performance by the stutterers as compared to their nonstuttering peers. Significant average intrasubject variability occurred on phonetic complexity tasks involving a variable linguistic sentence and its reiterative counterpart and on a syllable expansion through clustering task. Use of internal timing sources resulted in within normal limit performance by the stutterers on both rate tasks but on only one of …
Molecular Analysis Of Mutant And Wild Type Alcohol Dehydrogenase Alleles From Drosophila., Mark Andrew Batzer
Molecular Analysis Of Mutant And Wild Type Alcohol Dehydrogenase Alleles From Drosophila., Mark Andrew Batzer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Wild type alcohol dehydrogenase polypeptides (ADH) from Drosophila melanogaster transformants were examined using western blots and polyclonal antiserum specific for Drosophila melanogaster ADH. These data indicate that ADH from Hawaiian drosophilids was similar in molecular weight to Drosophila melanogaster ADH, but that the isoelectric points of the Hawaiian electromorphs were distinct. Therefore it was evident that western blots could be used to characterize ADH from different species of Drosophila. Mutants induced in Drosophila spermatozoa at the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) locus using X-rays, 1-ethyl-1-nitrosourea (ENU) or ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) were characterized using genetic complementation tests, western blots, Southern blots, northern blots …

Circulation And Sediment Dispersal On The Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama Continental Shelf., Scott Page Dinnel
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The circulation on the LMAS and adjacent regions has been characterized using historical hydrographic data and current meter data. Generalized seasonal circulation patterns have been proposed based on objective data over the inner shelf, outer shelf, and upper slope. Hydrographic data, acquired from the National Oceanographic Data Center, covering the Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama shelf (LMAS) and slope was analyzed. Seasonal maps of dynamic heights, relative to 500 db, were computed. Inner shelf current data, acquired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was analyzed. Three current meter deployments (winter 1980, spring 1981, summer 1981) with up to eight mooring locations, along with …

Path-Coefficient Analysis: A Study Of Phenotypic, Broad-Sense And Narrow-Sense Variation In Sugarcane., Kenneth Albert Gravois
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The variance-covariance structure of a Louisiana sugarcane (Sacchum spp.) population was estimated and used to calculate correlation coefficients (phenotypic, broad-sense genotypic and additive genetic), narrow-sense heritability and measures of additive genetic variation and gain under selection. Four progeny from each of 20 crosses were grown in plantcane, first ratoon and second ratoon crops at the St. Gabriel Research Station of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. Broad-sense genotypic and phenotypic correlations were calculated and subjected to path-coefficient analysis to study direct and indirect effects in a set of cause and effect relationships involving sucrose yield. Broad-sense genotypic relationships are useful to …
Pseudomonas Sp. Strain Pg2982: Uptake Of Glyphosate And Cloning Of A Gene Which Confers Increased Resistance To Glyphosate., Joseph E. Fitzgibbon
Pseudomonas Sp. Strain Pg2982: Uptake Of Glyphosate And Cloning Of A Gene Which Confers Increased Resistance To Glyphosate., Joseph E. Fitzgibbon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Chapter 1. Pseudomonas sp. strain PG2982 has the ability to use the phosphonate herbicide, glyphosate, as a sole phosphorus source. Glyphosate uptake occurs at a maximum in the late log phase of growth and is induced by phosphate starvation. Uptake is inhibited by phosphate and arsenate, but not by the amino acids glycine and sarcosine. The K$\sb{\rm m}$ and V$\sb{\rm max}$ for glyphosate uptake were calculated to be 23uM and 0.97nmoles/mg dry wt/min, respectively. A phosphate transport system with a broad substrate specificity seems to be responsible for glyphosate uptake. Chapter 2. Pseudomonas sp. strain PG 2982 is highly resistant …

Effects Of Prescribed Burning Or Hexazinone As Release Treatments In A Juvenile Mixed Loblolly Pine-Hardwood Stand., James Davis Haywood
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A field study was established on a Beauregard silt loam site in central Louisiana to provide basic information on the effects of prescribed burning or hexazinone herbicide when used to control potential competitors of loblolly pine trees (Pinus taeda L.) within a mixed pine-hardwood stand seven years after clearcutting and mechanical site preparation. The design was a randomized complete block, with five blocks of three treatments each: check, hexazinone, and prescribed burn. The burn was a low-intensity winter backfire (87 kJ/s/m) executed on December 20, 1985, after the passage of a cold front, with light northerly winds, relative humidity of …
The Effects Of The Tax Reform Act Of 1986 On The Real Estate Capital Markets And Its Differential Effects On Entity And Functional Forms: An Empirical Investigation., Evelyn C. Hume
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Differences of opinion exist in the literature regarding the relationship between changes in tax policy and changes in the value of firms' capital stock. The purpose of this study was twofold. One aim was to determine whether the real estate capital markets react to public information regarding proposed or actual changes in tax law. The second and primary objective was to test the traditional economic theory that a direct relationship exists between changes in tax law and the value of the firm. Changes in cost recovery rules for real property and in corporate tax rates were the tax provisions of …
An Investigation Of The Student Equity Effects Of The Public School Finance System In Louisiana., Barbara Yates Lacost
An Investigation Of The Student Equity Effects Of The Public School Finance System In Louisiana., Barbara Yates Lacost
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Louisiana school funding system on two dimensions of student equity: equality of opportunity and equal treatment of equals. This was accomplished by assessing alternate year data from 1977-78 to 1985-86 in order to document changes, if any, that occurred in the equality associated with the distribution of state and local revenue. Berne and Stiefel's (1984) conceptual framework for measuring equity was utilized to determine the variables and measures used. Of first importance was the investigation of equal opportunity. This principle was represented by the fiscal neutrality standard, which …
The Historical Geography Of Rice Culture In The American South., Jeon Lee
The Historical Geography Of Rice Culture In The American South., Jeon Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The South Atlantic Hearth was the dominant rice producer during the colonial and antebellum periods. Rice production in the region declined after the outbreak of the Civil War, but the region kept the leading position until the 1880s. Along the Lower Mississippi River in southern Louisiana a remarkable amount of rice was produced from the antebellum period, reaching a peak in the 1890s. A major regional shift occurred when rice culture on a large-scale, commercial basis developed in southwestern Louisiana during the 1880s by transplanted Midwesterners. From there it spread into southeastern Texas during the last decade of the nineteenth …
Estimation Of The Renewal Function., Binshan Lin
Estimation Of The Renewal Function., Binshan Lin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The computation of the renewal function when the distribution function is completely known has received much attention in the literature. However, in many cases the form of the distribution function is unknown and has to be estimated nonparametrically. Several nonparametric estimators for the renewal function for complete data were suggested by Frees (1986) and Schneider et al. (1988). In many cases, however, censoring of the lifetime might occur. In this study, estimators of the renewal function based on randomly censored data is discussed. We introduce nonparametric estimators of the renewal function and show that the estimators compare well with a …

A study of the biology, movements, behavior, and physiology of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from a low-salinity marsh in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana was conducted from March 1985 to December 1987. Comparative data were also collected for freshwater largemouth bass from Ben Hur Lake and False River, Louisiana. Marsh largemouth bass were small compared to freshwater bass of similar age, although growth rates of older marsh bass equaled or exceeded those of freshwater fish. Marsh bass relative weight indicated excellent condition during all seasons, while freshwater bass exhibited reduced condition in early spring and fall. Characteristic body morphology and growth of …
How Forgetting Facilitates Remembering: An Analysis Of The Contextual Interference Effect In Motor Learning., Carol Cosgrove Poto
How Forgetting Facilitates Remembering: An Analysis Of The Contextual Interference Effect In Motor Learning., Carol Cosgrove Poto
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The experiments reported here were designed to test a hypothesis regarding why the contextual interference (CI) effect in retention of motor skills occurs. It was hypothesized that the high-CI or random group performs better on a retention test than the low-CI or blocked group because the random schedule has included practice in retrieving motor tasks from long-term memory (LTM). This is the same information-processing activity required for successful retention test performance. In essence, both groups learn the motor task to the same extent, but the random group also learns to recall the task from LTM on demand. In the first …

Predicting The Past: The Geography Of Settlement In Louisiana, 1699-1890, And Its Application To Historic Preservation., Peter Bingham Mires
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Historical geographers, because of their ability to place cultural phenomena in the appropriate spatial and temporal dimensions often conduct research that significantly parallels the interests of the preservationist. Now that the initial focus within historic preservation has shifted from the individual specimen to the cultural and historical milieu of which it was a part, a thorough understanding of the forces that were responsible for the creation of what confronts us as a relict cultural landscape is indispensable. The preservation of cultural resources, specifically historic sites and structures has, in the past, normally been conducted on a case-by-case basis. In this …
Aspects Of Subsurface Brine Formation In Passive Continental Margin Evaporite Basins., Vishnu Ranganathan
Aspects Of Subsurface Brine Formation In Passive Continental Margin Evaporite Basins., Vishnu Ranganathan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation consists of three papers which quantitatively model subsurface brine formation in passive, continental margin evaporite basins. In the first paper, a one dimensional finite difference model is developed to evaluate the brine-forming role of molecular diffusion of dissolved NaCl in the subsidence history of a hypothetical sedimentary basin containing a thick basal halite bed. It is shown that diffusion of dissolved NaCl from evaporites may be an important brine-forming process in young passive margin evaporite basins where evaporites are flat lying or gently dipping and that vertical fluxes of dissolved NaCl are great for basins with slow subsidence …

Site-Directed Mutagenesis In Fructose 6-Phosphate-1-Kinase From Bacillus Stearothermophilus And Molecular Cloning And Sequencing Of A Partial Human Muscle Fructose 6-Phosphate-1-Kinase Gene., Benigno Calderon Valdez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fructose 6-phosphate-1-kinase (PFK: EC. 2.7.1.11) catalyzes the phosphorylation of $\beta$-fructose 6-phosphate (Fru 6-P) to $\beta$-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. The first part of this dissertation shows that PFK from Bacillus stearothermophilus (BsPFK) unlike the major PFK from E. coli (EcPFKA) exhibits a hyperbolic profile with respect to Fru 6-P concentration in the absence of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP). BsPFK is sensitive to inhibition by high ATP concentrations and competitively inhibited by GDP or ADP. Arg-252 residue of BsPFK has been proposed to be involved in the binding of Fru 6-P. Mutation of this residue to alanine (RA252) increases BsPFK affinity for its inhibitor PEP (a …
