Amino Acid Responses Of Olfactory Bulb Cells In The Channel Catfish., Hilary Winfield Thompson
Amino Acid Responses Of Olfactory Bulb Cells In The Channel Catfish., Hilary Winfield Thompson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Amino acid (AA) responses of olfactory bulb (OB) mitral cells (MC) in the catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, were studied electrophysiologically. A total of 63 cells were recorded in 28 fish in two separate experiments. For the first study, 27 cells in 22 fish were studied with olfactory tract (OT) intact during stimulation with 10$\sp{-6}$ M to 10$\sp{-2}$ M concentrations of 11 AA. MC responses were quantified by interspike interval (ISI) variables sensitive to inhibition (maximum ISI) and excitation (number of action potentials (AP), minimum ISI). APs were also counted in subdivisions to produce a measure sensitive to MC response temporal patterning. …

Aspects Of Vowel Perception By Normal Hearing And Hearing Impaired Listeners., Joan Marie Besing
Aspects Of Vowel Perception By Normal Hearing And Hearing Impaired Listeners., Joan Marie Besing
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effect of durational differences on the identification of vowel tokens was studied using ten normal hearing and six hearing impaired subjects. Stimuli were synthetically generated and varied in duration of the steady state, durations of the initial and final transitions and F1/F2/F3 location. Listeners were required to identify the given vowel token from a set of ten possible alternatives. The results from the normal hearing group supported the established effects of duration on the perception of vowels. However, these effects were different depending on the frequency locations of F1/F2/F3. Further, changes in the duration of the initial transition had …
Floral Ontogeny And Histogenesis In Leguminosae., Kittie Sue Derstine
Floral Ontogeny And Histogenesis In Leguminosae., Kittie Sue Derstine
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Inflorescence organogeny and floral initiation are investigated topographically (using scanning electron microscopy) and histogenetically in Acacia baileyana (Mimosoideae) and Lupinus havardii (Papilionoideae). Floral ontogeny is investigated topographically in Parkinsonia aculeata (Caesalpinioideae). The paniculate racemes of A. baileyana are constructed of first- and second-order inflorescence meristems. Each produces first-order and second-order bracts, respectively, in acropetal order. Each of the former bracts subtends one second-order inflorescence meristem while the latter bract type subtends a single flower. The radially symmetrical floral meristem of A. baileyana produces calyx members in helical order and corolla members simultaneously with a precocious terminal carpel. Common stamen primordia …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Since c.1860, the Paris Conservatoire has employed a succession of master artist/teachers of the silver Boehm flute. This tradition is so distinctive that the term "French Flute School" is used to refer to flute teachers and pupils of the Paris Conservatoire. Certain exponents of the French Flute School have written classic method books which have remained important to Boehm flute players throughout the world. The style and quality of flute literature changed significantly from the mid-nineteenth century to the present and when musical style changed so did demands on the performer. Although studies and exercises are not intended for public …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of The Operating Funds Flow Measures Of Cash, Net Quick Assets, And Working Capital In Predicting Future Cash Flow., Catherine Innes Green Gaharan
A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of The Operating Funds Flow Measures Of Cash, Net Quick Assets, And Working Capital In Predicting Future Cash Flow., Catherine Innes Green Gaharan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 95, "Statement of Cash Flows," the Financial Accounting Standards Board requires a statement of cash flows in place of a statement of changes in financial position. This information is assumed to be useful in predicting future cash flow. The first part of this three-part study empirically tests this assumption by comparing the abilities of three operating funds flow measures (working capital, net quick assets, and cash) to predict future cash flows. The second part of this study determines whether the reporting concept best for predicting future cash flow is dependent upon industry classification. …
Query Processing On The Entity-Relationship Graph Based Relational Database Systems., Hung-Pin Chen
Query Processing On The Entity-Relationship Graph Based Relational Database Systems., Hung-Pin Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An ERG (Entity-Relationship Graph) can be used to provide a semantic structure to a relational database system. An ERG is defined by local regions. A local region contains two nodes of entity types and a node of relationship type. The semantic constraints of the database represented by the ERG (Entity-Relationship Graph) can be used to enforce the global integrity of the database system. A query is mapped onto the ERG to obtain an ERQG (Entity-Relationship Query Graph). This mapping can be specified by the user by navigating the database or automatically allocated by the system via a universal relation interface. …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cattle, naturally infected with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, were evaluated with respect to immune status. Their ability to express cell mediated immune responses to homologous and heterologous antigens was also evaluated. Lymphocyte and macrophage augmentation was attempted to localize the immune defect in cattle with paratuberculosis. Infected cattle had varying responses to johnin skin test antigen. Lymphocyte blastogenic responses and migration inhibition were, however, consistently positive in infected cattle. Non-infected cattle had positive skin test reactions, blastogenic responses, and migration inhibition after sensitization with M. bovis BCG, M. paratuberculosis, and keyhole limpet hemocyanin. No changes were seen in lymphocyte blastogenic response, migration …
Three Essays On The Welfare Effects Of Factor Immobility And Price Uncertainty For A Country Experiencing Growth, Entering A Customs Union And Giving Or Receiving A Unilateral Transfer., Carolyn Margaret Landry
Three Essays On The Welfare Effects Of Factor Immobility And Price Uncertainty For A Country Experiencing Growth, Entering A Customs Union And Giving Or Receiving A Unilateral Transfer., Carolyn Margaret Landry
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation presents an intertemporal model with two degrees of endogenously determined labor mobility: complete immobility in the short run and partial mobility in the long run. It examines the impact on welfare when, in response to a change in an exogenous variable, the nation adjusts its output ratio. The movement of factors between sectors is necessary but in the case of labor, that does not take place at first because of labor's slowness in responding to a developing wage differential. The consequent contraction of the product transformation curve is welfare reducing. Uncertainty about the future terms of trade is …

Ada Rehan: American Actress (1857-1916). (Volumes I And Ii)., Aileen Alana Hendricks-Wenck
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although Ada Rehan (1857-1916) achieved international fame as America's representative actress, rivaling Ellen Terry during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, historians have forgotten her. After beginning in 1872 to perform with her sister, Kate, and brother-in-law, Oliver Doud Byron, in their company and, later, in Mrs. Louisa Lane Drew's Arch Street Theatre Company (1873-75), Ada moved upward to ingenue roles in Barney Macauley's company (1875-76). Then she assumed leading parts with John W. Albaugh's company (1876-79), followed by a few months supporting Fanny Davenport. Finally, she advanced to a position in one of the most prominent theatres in …

Response Of Soybean Growth And Dinitrogen-Fixing Ability To Insect-Induced Defoliation., Maurice Blake Layton Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A series of greenhouse experiments was conducted to investigate the effects of insect-induced defoliation on growth and N$\sb2$-fixing ability of soybean. This research had three major objectives: (1) to examine the effects of different levels of defoliation, (2) to determine the impact of progressive defoliation, and (3) to study the ability of soybeans to recover following defoliation. All experiments were conducted in a similar manner. Larvae of the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), were used to defoliate soybeans in the vegetative stage of development and the acetylene-ethylene reduction assay was used to provide an indirect measure of N$\sb2$-fixing ability of …
Semantic Constraint Modeling In Database Using The Applicative Data Language., Herman Hai-Lou Lee
Semantic Constraint Modeling In Database Using The Applicative Data Language., Herman Hai-Lou Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There is a growing need to incorporate database integrity subsystems into large information systems in engineering design environments and real-time control and monitoring environments. The objectives of the integrity subsystem are to provide a user interface for constraint specification, to compile the specification into enforcement strategies, and to check data integrity at both compile-time and run-time. The approach proposed by this research is to develop the conceptual view of the database using the Entity Relationship Model (ERM). Users' queries and semantic constraints can be specified by an ER-based data language, the Applicative Data Language (ADL). Any ADL constraint specification is …

New Female Playwrights In The American Theatre, 1973-1983: A Critical Analysis Of Thought In Selected Plays., Joyce Williams O'Rourke
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Historically, the female playwright has been plagued by a lack of visibility. Long hindered by a limited number of women writers as role models, by the few receptive stages on which to mount their works, and by a public accustomed to a male dominated stage practice, female playwrights nevertheless in the last two decades have produced an extraordinary body of work, signifying a new thrust in the American theatre. Ten playwrights have been selected as representatives of this movement: Tina Howe, Rosalyn Drexler, Rose Goldemberg, Mary Gallagher, Adele Shank, Lavonne Mueller, Wendy Wasserstein, Ntozake Shange, Beth Henley and Marsha Norman. …
Ultrastructural Studies Of Cell Membrane-Associated Events In Early And Late Stages Of Bovine Coronavirus Replication., Harold Ross Payne
Ultrastructural Studies Of Cell Membrane-Associated Events In Early And Late Stages Of Bovine Coronavirus Replication., Harold Ross Payne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The early events in the infection of human rectal tumor cells by bovine coronavirus were investigated by immunoelectron microscopy and by studies with lysosomotropic weak bases. Virus particles labeled with colloidal gold were endocytosed by synchronously infected cells and accumulated in vacuoles that resembled secondary lysosomes. Sites of fusion between the virus envelope and the plasmalemma were observed but fusion events along intracellular membranes were not found. Exposure of cells to ammonium chloride or to mythylamine during the first hour of infection had little inhibitory effect on the production of infectious virus. Chloroquine treatments were inhibitory but this effect was …

A Judicial Decision Under Pressure: A Dramaturgical Analysis Of The Rosenberg Case., Kenneth C. Petress
A Judicial Decision Under Pressure: A Dramaturgical Analysis Of The Rosenberg Case., Kenneth C. Petress
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the 1951 death sentences imposed upon Ethel and Julius Rosenberg by Judge Irving R. Kaufman. This study's focus is discovering how these sentences came to be, rhetorically. The study employs the dramatistic pentad suggested by Kenneth Burke. The scene is seen as the dominant, driving force behind the judge's sentences. The scene is labeled as "betrayal"; the name betrayal resulting from: (1) the Cold War; (2) McCarthyism; (3) the Korean War; and (4) other domestic post-World War II problems. The analysis pictures the American government using the Rosenbergs as scapegoats to symbolically cleanse away betrayal images. Thus, …
An Investigation Of Internal Auditor Judgment On The Importance Of Indicators Of Potential Financial Fraud: An Analytic Hierarchy Process Approach., Barbara Ann Apostolou
An Investigation Of Internal Auditor Judgment On The Importance Of Indicators Of Potential Financial Fraud: An Analytic Hierarchy Process Approach., Barbara Ann Apostolou
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Financial fraud has become a serious problem to the business community. As a result, regulators and financial statement users have looked to the auditing profession for answers to the problem. The role of the internal auditor has received significant attention due to the unique position they fill. That is, they are positioned to observe and test financial and operational activities of the firm on a continuous basis. In addition, internal auditors are able to devote more time to the deterrence and detection of financial fraud than their external counterparts. The National Commission on Fraudulent Financial Reporting (Treadway Commission) issued its …
Plant Protein Improvement By Genetic Engineering: Use Of Synthetic Genes., Moon Sik Yang
Plant Protein Improvement By Genetic Engineering: Use Of Synthetic Genes., Moon Sik Yang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The essential amino acid composition of plant foodstuffs is very important, especially in the developing countries where people very heavily depend on plant proteins from a single source. In these situations, it would be highly beneficial to 'engineer' the plant to produce proteins with a balanced essential amino acid content. Recombinant DNA technology and Agrobacterium-based vector systems offer a novel approach to modify plant proteins. Several attempts with some encouraging results have been made to express plant storage protein genes in transgenic plants. However, improvement of the quality of plant protein using these techniques is in an early stage. In …
Electronic Structure Of Clusters: Applications To High-T(C) Superconductors., Han Chen
Electronic Structure Of Clusters: Applications To High-T(C) Superconductors., Han Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We present a method of studying the electronic structure of clusters by ab initio, self-consistent, local spin density functional calculations. The linear combination of Gaussian orbitals (LCGO) method has been adopted in developing a general cluster program. A variational charge fitting procedure is used in the evaluation of the matrix elements of the electrostatic potential, and a separate least-squares fitting procedure is used in regard to the exchange-correlation potential. Self-consistent solutions have been obtained using this program for the Ba$\sb4$Cu$\sb2$O$\sb7$ clusters as a portion of the Cu-O chain in the high-T$\sb{c}$ superconductor YBa$\sb2$Cu$\sb3$O$\sb7$. Four different charge states of Ba$\sb4$Cu$\sb2$O$\sb7$ are …

Free Radical Production From Criegee Ozonides., James Conrad Ewing
Free Radical Production From Criegee Ozonides., James Conrad Ewing
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Allylbenzene ozonide (ABO), a model for poly-unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) ozonides, is shown to initiate the autoxidation of methyl linoleate (18:2ME) at 37$\sp\circ$C under 760 torr of oxygen. This process is inhibited by d-alpha-tocopherol ($\alpha$-T) and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT). Rates of initiated autoxidation were measured by appearance of conjugated diene (C.D.) and oxygen-uptake experiments; rates are proportional to the square root of ABO concentration, implying that the usual free radical autoxidation rate law is obeyed. Activation parameters for the thermal decomposition of ABO were determined under N$\sb2$ in the presence of radical scavengers and found to be E$\sb{\rm a}$ = 28.2 …
The Memory Representation Of Motor Skills: A Test Of Schema Theory., Craig John Chamberlin
The Memory Representation Of Motor Skills: A Test Of Schema Theory., Craig John Chamberlin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Currently, the pre-eminent model of central representation for motor skills is embodied in Schmidt's schema theory of discrete motor skill learning (Schmidt, 1975). Two experiments are reported here that contrast predictions from a schema abstraction model that is the basis for schema theory to those from a specific exemplar model of motor skill memory representation. In both experiments, subjects performed 300 trials per day of 3 variations of a 3-segment timing task over 4 days of acquisition. The subjects then either immediately transferred to 4 novel variations of the same task (Experiment 1) that varied in degree of environmental similarity …
