Class Numbers And Units Of Number Fields E With Elementary Abelian K(2)O(E)., Ruth Ilse Berger Jan 1988

Class Numbers And Units Of Number Fields E With Elementary Abelian K(2)O(E)., Ruth Ilse Berger

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This is a contribution to the research that is going on in Algebraic Number Theory, relating classical questions on class numbers and units of a number field F to the structure of $K\sb2$($O\sb{F}$), the Milnor K-group $K\sb2$ of the ring of integers. We are interested in number fields F where the 2-primary subgroup of $K\sb2$($O\sb{F}$) is elementary abelian of rank $r\sb1$(F), the number of real embeddings of F. In (C-$H\sb1$) it is proven that the 2-primary subgroup of $K\sb2(O\sb{F}$) is of the above type if and only if the number field has the following properties: (a) the number field has …

Characterization Of The Pulpwood Procurement Environment Of Northwest Louisiana With A Geographic Information System., Richard William Brinker Jan 1988

Characterization Of The Pulpwood Procurement Environment Of Northwest Louisiana With A Geographic Information System., Richard William Brinker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An analysis of the pulpwood procurement environment was made to describe and model forest land area, ownership patterns, timber production, forest inventory, and the transportation network of 13 parishes in the northwest region of Louisiana. Pulpwood delivered to a pulpmill accounts for approximately 50 percent of pulp production costs. The cost of delivered pulpwood is a function of the mode of transportation, distance from the mill, competition for stumpage, and quality of the transportation network. A data base is developed from wood usage requirements, pulpmill and wood concentration yard locations, location of forested areas and their relative volumes. Areas of …

White Noise Approach To Multiparameter Stochastic Integration., Mylan Redfern Betounes Jan 1988

White Noise Approach To Multiparameter Stochastic Integration., Mylan Redfern Betounes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation we will set up the Hida theory of generalized Brownian functionals, or white noise analysis, on ${\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d})$, the space of tempered distributions, and apply it to multiparameter stochastic integration. With the partial ordering on $\IR\sbsp{+}{\rm d}$: (s$\sb1$, dots,s$\sb{\rm d}$) $<$ (t$\sb1$, dots,t$\sb{\rm d}$) if s$\sb{\rm i}$ $<$ t$\sb{\rm i}$, 1 $\leq$ i $\leq$ d, the Wiener process W((t$\sb1$, dots,t$\sb{\rm d}$),x) = $\langle$x,1$\sb{\rm \lbrack 0,t\sb1)\times\cdots \times\lbrack 0,t\sb{d})}\rangle$, x $\in {\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d})$ is a generalization of a Brownian motion and there is the Wiener-Ito decomposition: L$\sp2({\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d}))$ = $\sum\sbsp{\rm n = 0}{\infty}\times$K$\sb{\rm n}$, where K$\sb{\rm n}$ is the space of n-tuple Weiner integrals. As in the one-dimensional case, there are the continuous inclusions (L$\sp2)\sp+ \subset$ L$\sp2({\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d})) \subset$ (L$\sp2)\sp-$, and (L$\sp2)\sp-$ is considered the space of generalized Wiener functionals. We will define the differentiation operator $\partial\sb{\rm (t\sb1,\dots,t\sb{d}})$ and its adjoint $\partial\sp{\*}\sb{\rm (t\sb1,\dots,t\sb{d})}$ and give some properties. We prove that the multidimensional time Ito stochastic integral is a special case of a white noise integral and give conditions for its existence. For d = 2 the Ito integral is not sufficient for representing elements of L$\sp2({\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp2))$. We show that the other integral involved can also be realized in the white noise setting. For F $\in {\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d}$) we will then define F(W((s,t),x) as an element of (L$\sp2)\sp-$ and obtain a generalized Ito formula.

Nature And Heritability Of Resistance To Sugarcane Smut Caused By Ustilago Scitaminea., Chih-Ping Chao Jan 1988

Nature And Heritability Of Resistance To Sugarcane Smut Caused By Ustilago Scitaminea., Chih-Ping Chao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The nature of resistance to smut, caused by Ustilago scitaminea Syd., was evaluated in 15 sugarcane, interspecific Saccharum hybrid, clones with smut reactions ranging from resistant to highly susceptible. No association was found between smut infection level and bud traits including length, width, length x width, shape, flange, groove, germination type, germination times, and shoot growth rates. In two clones, inoculation of plants with initial shoot lengths up to 6 cm resulted in high smut infection levels, whereas inoculation of ungerminated buds or plants with longer shoots resulted in low infection levels. Resistance to systematic infection was detected in plants …

"The Trouble I'Ve Seen": Visions And Revisions Of Bondage, Flight, And Freedom In Black American Autobiography., David Lewis Dudley Jan 1988

"The Trouble I'Ve Seen": Visions And Revisions Of Bondage, Flight, And Freedom In Black American Autobiography., David Lewis Dudley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation, an historical overview of black American autobiography from Frederick Douglass to Malcolm X, examines a recurring pattern and two related themes in the genre. Ever since the escaped slave narratives established bondage, flight, and freedom as the three-part pattern of their organization, black autobiographers have employed these same elements to tell their life stories. The creation of the free "I" is the pervasive theme of black American autobiography, freedom being won and the autobiographical self established through a symbolic struggle against and victory over a powerful father figure. This figure may be the paternalistic white culture in which …

Genetics Of Callus Formation And Plant Regeneration In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Qi Ren Chu Jan 1988

Genetics Of Callus Formation And Plant Regeneration In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Qi Ren Chu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Callus formation and plant regeneration rates for both immature panicle and anther culture of rice were studied in several populations, including parents, F$\sb1$, F$\sb2$, F$\sb3$, and backcrossed generations. Significant genotypic differences in regeneration and callus formation rates were observed. In immature panicle culture, F$\sb1$'s generally produced rates of regeneration close to their high parents. Generation mean analysis of regeneration rates revealed the importance of dominance effects (d) and epistatic effects (aa, ad, and dd) in immature panicle culture. In contrast, production of callus by 12 F$\sb1$ hybrids in another culture was closely related to the low parents, suggesting that suppression …

Prediction Of Methane Solubility In Geopressured Brine Solutions By Application Of Perturbation Theory., Yangtzu Chao Jan 1988

Prediction Of Methane Solubility In Geopressured Brine Solutions By Application Of Perturbation Theory., Yangtzu Chao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ability to predict methane solubility in underground reservoirs is essential to eventual exploitation of geothermal-geopressured reservoirs as an alternate energy source. In this study, second-order Leonard-Barker-Henderson perturbation theory was applied to brine solutions containing H$\sb2$O, CH$\sb4$, C$\sb2$H$\sb6$, CO$\sb2$, and NaCl to develop a fundamentally-based thermodynamic approach to handle more effectively the broad temperature and pressure ranges encountered in underground reservoirs, and to include the effect of the presence of various salts and other gases on methane solubility. The apparent ideal solution fugacity, f$\sbsp{i}{o\sp\prime}$, for each solute gas is proposed and developed through perturbation theory as a direct measure of …

The Relation Between Major Life Events, Minor Events And Psychological Distress., James Cook Gilchrist Jan 1988

The Relation Between Major Life Events, Minor Events And Psychological Distress., James Cook Gilchrist

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relation between life events and psychological distress has been a subject of considerable interest in recent years. Most previous research has focused on major life events. The present study investigated the role of minor daily events and their relation to symptoms of depression, anxiety and global psychological distress. Two scoring approaches were used for both types of events; frequency of occurrence and the subjective weighting of each occurrence. A total of one hundred and ninety one subjects volunteered from the community. Each subject completed the daily stress scale each day for seven consecutive days. At the end of the …

Natural And Artificial Regeneration Of Baldcypress (Taxodium Distichum (L.) Rich.) In The Barataria And Lake Verret Basins Of Louisiana., William Henry Conner Jan 1988

Natural And Artificial Regeneration Of Baldcypress (Taxodium Distichum (L.) Rich.) In The Barataria And Lake Verret Basins Of Louisiana., William Henry Conner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Louisiana contains the largest volume of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.) timber in the United States, with 70% of the volume located in the south central part of the state. Baldcypress regeneration was studied in the Barataria and Verret Basins during 1982-1987. Overall, natural regeneration was poor in both basins. There was some recruitment during the dry years 1984 and 1986 but these seedlings did not grow tall enough to survive subsequent flooding. Coppice regeneration in logged areas was excellent after logging, but a majority of the sprouts died in succeeding years. In three projects where baldcypress seedlings were planted …

Self-Referential Play Gone Wild: A Case For The "Roman Bourgeois" As Metafiction., Dianne Paula Guenin-Lelle Jan 1988

Self-Referential Play Gone Wild: A Case For The "Roman Bourgeois" As Metafiction., Dianne Paula Guenin-Lelle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Roman bourgeois is a text which has resisted traditional modes of criticism, and thus it has confounded critics who simply did not know what to make of this hybrid work. It has been generally considered to be a novel which lacks coherence and literary merit, and spells the end of the cycle of seventeenth-century comic novels. This study proposes that the Roman bourgeois be considered as a metafictional text, where textual "anomalies" could be considered as "positive" attributes since they draw attention to the fictional framework and the fiction-making process of the novel. The novel operates according to the …

The population for the study consisted of members of the freshmen class at Southeastern Louisiana University in the Fall of 1985. A thirty-five percent sample was achieved by administering the research questionnaire in a group setting. The questionnaire was built around determining actual and perceived knowledge and interest in acquiring more knowledge in six areas of health. Null hypotheses of relationships among the three knowledge dimensions were tested by the Pearson Product-Moment …

1. Fine-Tuning Photosensitizer Charge In Prevention Of Back Electron Transfer In Water-Splitting. 2. Perturbation Of Polypyridine Ruthenium(Ii) Excited States., Leslie James Henderson Jr Jan 1988

1. Fine-Tuning Photosensitizer Charge In Prevention Of Back Electron Transfer In Water-Splitting. 2. Perturbation Of Polypyridine Ruthenium(Ii) Excited States., Leslie James Henderson Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is shown that the charge of the photodonor in electron-transfer reactions is an additional variable that should be considered in strategies to inhibit energy-wasting back electron-transfer reactions. In particular, when microheterogeneous media are used in water-splitting schemes and the photodonor charge is adjusted to take advantage of the electrostatics of a micellar potential surface, the back electron transfer is reduced. It is known that a 'chemical soup' consisting of the photodonor tris(2,2$\sp\prime$-bipyridine)-ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)$\sb3\sp{2+}$), the electron relay methyl viologen (MV$\sp{2+}$), and a sacrificial donor like triethanolamine (TEOA) can generate dihydrogen from water in the presence of appropriate catalysts. Back electron …

The Effects Of Linguistic And Non-Linguistic Context On The Deictic Interpretation Of Noun Phrases., Daniel George Foster Jan 1988

The Effects Of Linguistic And Non-Linguistic Context On The Deictic Interpretation Of Noun Phrases., Daniel George Foster

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Definite noun phrases (NP's), proper names, and third person pronouns are not consistently interpreted deictically. Furthermore, these three types and first and second person pronouns, or potentially deictic NP's, whether deictic or not, may be interpreted as pertaining to the universe of discourse that each text creates, the situation of writing in which the text is created, or the attitudes of the writer towards the referent of a particular NP. Universe of discourse NP's include generic and descriptive NP's and those deictic in the most basic sense (i.e. those that point within the spatio-temporal field of the world external to …

High Temperature Coal-Gas Desulfurization: Kinetic Evaluation Of A Zinc Ferrite Sorbent., Gary D. Focht Jan 1988

High Temperature Coal-Gas Desulfurization: Kinetic Evaluation Of A Zinc Ferrite Sorbent., Gary D. Focht

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thermogravimetric techniques were used to monitor the weight of cylindrical zinc ferrite extrudes in order to examine the sulfidation and regeneration kinetics. The reaction of zinc ferrite with H$\sb2$S (sulfidation) was studied over a temperature range of 573-973 K in gas streams containing 0.6-3 mol% hydrogen sulfide. Reduced zinc ferrite, ZnO plus Fe$\sb3$O$\sb4$, is capable of complete sulfidation from 873-973 K except at conditions where the iron oxide in the sorbent is reduced to FeO, in which case sulfidation does not go to completion. The sulfidation reaction is controlled by internal diffusion and mass transfer from the bulk gas phase …

Arguing Affect: The Rhetoric Of Peripheral Persuasion., Lewis Blaine Hershey Ii Jan 1988

Arguing Affect: The Rhetoric Of Peripheral Persuasion., Lewis Blaine Hershey Ii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the theoretical parameters of peripheral persuasion. Chapter one reviews social scientific approaches to the study of persuasion from researchers in communication theory, psychology, and marketing. This review reveals a bifurcation of the persuasion concept into cognitive and affective dimensions. After demonstrating a bias in social scientific research for the cognitive dimensions of persuasion, chapter one links the affective dimensions of persuasion with the concept of peripheral persuasion and emerging trends in rhetorical theory that emphasize narrative models of communication. Chapter two scrutinizes the distinction between cognitive or central routes to persuasion and affective or peripheral routes to …

Antigenic Analysis Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Using Monoclonal Antibodies., Khalid Abdullah Hussain Jan 1988

Antigenic Analysis Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Using Monoclonal Antibodies., Khalid Abdullah Hussain

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Monoclonal antibodies (MCAbs) produced against the prototype cell-adapted Wyoming strain of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), a lentivirus, were studied for reactivity with the homologous prototype and 16 heterologous isolates. Eighteen hybridomas producing MCAbs were isolated. Western blot (immunoblot) analyses indicated that 10 were specific for the major envelope glycoprotein (gp90) and 8 for the transmembrane glycoprotein (gp45). Four MCAbs specific to epitopes of gp90 neutralized prototype EIAV infectivity. These neutralizing MCAbs apparently reacted with variable regions of the envelope gp90, as evidenced by their unique reactivity with the panel of isolates, suggesting recognition of at least three different neutralization …

Wade Hampton And The Rhetoric Of Race: A Study Of The Speaking Of Wade Hampton On The Race Issue In South Carolina, 1865-1878., Dewitt Grant Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the racial rhetoric of Wade Hampton with particular attention to claims that he was a moderate and sought to solve the racial problems of the period through rhetorical means. The study investigated: (1) the extent to which his speeches addressed the racial issue, (2) the consistency of his position, and (3) the nature and appropriateness of his appeals. State newspapers were examined to locate his speeches, which were categorized by period and subject. Examination of the data revealed four specific racial exigencies to which Hampton responded: (1) the loss of black labor (1865-66), (2) black suffrage (1867-68), …

Minimum Time Motion Of A Robotic Manipulator., Heon Hwang Jan 1988

Minimum Time Motion Of A Robotic Manipulator., Heon Hwang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation treats the modeling, analysis, and trajectory control of a robotic manipulator to execute specified point-to-point tasks. The relative coordinate representation of kinematic and dynamic variables is defined using vectors and matrices based on coordinate transformations. A kinematic modeling of a manipulator is performed using Denavit-Hartenberg link parameters. For given end-effector information (location and orientation), a stable and efficient iterative numerical algorithm for a joint solution is developed. A modified general Gauss elimination and a direct minimum search are combined with other refinements to yield fast convergency and stable results. This algorithm can be used as a routine solution …

A Study On The Toxicity Of Sesbania Drummondii In Chickens And Rats., Marie-Lorraine Marceau-Day Jan 1988

A Study On The Toxicity Of Sesbania Drummondii In Chickens And Rats., Marie-Lorraine Marceau-Day

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A comparative study of two susceptible species, the chicken and the rat, to crude and partially purified extracts of the plant Sesbania drummondii was undertaken. Partial physical and chemical characterization of crude sesbania extracts has been accomplished including temperature and pH stability, molecular weight fractionation and high pressure liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography retention times. The toxicity of these different fractions could be differentiated with respect to weight loss, mortality, morbidity, serum protein changes and effect on PChE (Pseudocholinesterase) activities. The results indicated that more than one toxin exists in crude extracts of this plant. The pathophysiological findings could …

Application Of Entropy Theory To Multivariate Hydrologic Analysis. (Volumes I And Ii)., Predrag Felix Krstanovic Jan 1988

Application Of Entropy Theory To Multivariate Hydrologic Analysis. (Volumes I And Ii)., Predrag Felix Krstanovic

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation discusses the multivariate hydrologic analysis by the entropy theory. It is divided into two major parts. The first part (Volume I) examines hydrologic frequency analysis, specifically rainfall-runoff modeling and the design of rainfall networks. The second part (Volume II) develops two flood forecasting models: the univariate streamflow model, and the bivariate rainfall-runoff model. The hydrologic frequency analysis focuses on three topics: multivariate normal distribution, multivariate exponential distribution and multivariate exponential distribution and multivariate mixed distributions. Many forms of univariate, bivariate and multivariate normal distributions are derived by using the principle of maximum entropy (POME), emphasizing the serial dependency …

Two commercially important species of Louisiana crayfish, Procambarus clarkii (Girard) and P. acutus acutus (Girard), from the Atchafalaya River Basin and from open ponds, as well as sediment and water from these environs, were sampled at three times during two consecutive fishing (production) seasons. The abdominal muscle and hepatopancreatic tissue were digested with nitric acid; the sediment was dried prior to digestion with hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia; and the water was filtered prior to analysis by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP) for As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Pb, and Ni. Pb, Hg, and Cd, if present, were in …

Effects Of Quantity Of Epicuticular Wax On Leaves And Nitrogen Fertilization Rates On Resistance Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) To Sheath Blight (Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn (Thanatephorus Cucumeris (Frank) Donk);)., Roland Chris Yarkpah Massaquoi Jan 1988

Effects Of Quantity Of Epicuticular Wax On Leaves And Nitrogen Fertilization Rates On Resistance Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) To Sheath Blight (Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn (Thanatephorus Cucumeris (Frank) Donk);)., Roland Chris Yarkpah Massaquoi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nine rice cultivars with different levels of resistance to sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, were evaluated in the field and greenhouse for quantity of epicuticular wax (EW) from leaves, infection cushion (IC) formation by the pathogen on leaves, and the relationship of these factors to disease resistance. Comparisons among resistant and susceptible cultivars using scanning electron microscopy suggested that more EW was found on the leaf blade and sheath surfaces of resistant cultivars. Gravimetric analysis of EW from rice leaves supported these observations. EW production at different growth stages increased until the boot stage and then dropped. Correlation coefficients …

Recognizing Partially Occluded Objects Using Information Extracted From Polygonal Approximation., Chung-Mou Peng Wu Jan 1988

Recognizing Partially Occluded Objects Using Information Extracted From Polygonal Approximation., Chung-Mou Peng Wu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis addresses the problem of recognizing partially occluded two dimensional objects. The goal is to develop a system which is able to identify and locate several overlapping objects in the scene. To achieve this goal, the system must perform the following specific tasks: (1) storing useful information about objects in some format, which is often referred to as the process of object representation or model formation (2) matching procedure based on the object representation, and (3) efficient search of the best matching. This thesis presents a new approach to accomplish these tasks. Polygonal approximation is used to represent an …

On Prime Powers And Symbolic Prime Powers., Patrick Hall Phenis Jan 1988

On Prime Powers And Symbolic Prime Powers., Patrick Hall Phenis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We study the conditions under which the power of a prime ideal is equal to the corresponding symbolic prime power. We begin by extending a result of Villamayor(h). We consider a smooth k-algebra S(S$\sp\prime$) which is the localization of a finite k-algebra where k is a field of characteristic zero. For a prime ideal P (P$\sp\prime$) we show that if $S\over P$ $\cong$ $S\sp\prime\over P\sp\prime$ then P$\sp{n}$ = P$\sp{(n)}$ if and only if P$\sp\prime\sp{n}$ = P$\sp\prime\sp{(n)}$, for n $\geq$ 1. In the proof we use a generalization of the notion of a truncated cotangent complex introduced by Illusie. We then …

Adjustment Of Spouses With Caregiving Of Mentally Impaired, Physically Impaired, And Nonimpaired Elderly., Audrey Kay Sistler Jan 1988

Adjustment Of Spouses With Caregiving Of Mentally Impaired, Physically Impaired, And Nonimpaired Elderly., Audrey Kay Sistler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this research the relationship between coping, controllability, developmental level, and subjective well-being was examined within the context of caring for an impaired spouse. Seventy-seven older persons in three different categories participated in the study: (a) individuals who cared for a mentally impaired spouse, (b) individuals who cared for a physically impaired spouse, and (c) individuals who lived with a non-impaired spouse. Results indicated that the the non-caregivers had a higher level of well-being than caregivers of the physically impaired and caregivers of the mentally impaired. Caregivers of the mentally impaired individuals sought more social support and engaged in more …

On The Relative K(2) Of Non Commutative Local Rings., Robert B. Russell Jan 1988

On The Relative K(2) Of Non Commutative Local Rings., Robert B. Russell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines topics in Algebraic K-Theory, concerning the computation of absolute and relative Milnor groups, K$\sb2$(R) and K$\sb2$(R,I), for both commutative and non-commutative classes of rings, including the relative K$\sb2$ of non-commutative (not necessarily commutative) rings, and the absolute K$\sb2$ of commutative semilocal rings. Our main theorem is a natural extension of a result by Maazen and Stienstra (H. Maazen and J. Steinstra, A presentation of K$\sb2$ of split radical pairs, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 10(1977), 271-294) which determines the relative K$\sb2$ of rings in a commutative setting. We prove the non-commutative analog of this result for local rings. …

Ion Molecule Reactions Of Ligating Anions With Selected Lewis Acids As Potential Energy Surface Probes., William Stuart Taylor Jan 1988

Ion Molecule Reactions Of Ligating Anions With Selected Lewis Acids As Potential Energy Surface Probes., William Stuart Taylor

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Reactions of several dioxo- and dithio-ligand anions with BF$\sb3$ and SiF$\sb4$ have been carried out in the gas phase using the flowing afterglow technique. These reactions can be described by a generalized mechanism in which the anion first participates in a three-body addition step in which the coordination sphere of the Lewis acid is expanded. The close proximity of the second OH or SH group to the Lewis acid center presents the possibility of formation of a ring-closed species in an overall bimolecular substitution step accompanied by the ejection of neutral HF. Reactions of several of the oxo-ligand anions with …

Fear Of Crime: Interactions With Age Across Three Explanatory Models., Carol Y. Thompson Jan 1988

Fear Of Crime: Interactions With Age Across Three Explanatory Models., Carol Y. Thompson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The central issue examined in this research is the association of age and fear of crime, and more specifically, the interaction of age with other variables in determining fear levels. The data used were drawn from a Crime Survey of Louisiana conducted in 1984. The sample was state wide and derived from drivers' license holders in Louisiana. This research used three separate measures of fear in exploring the interaction of age with other predictors of fear of crime: global fear, fear of violent crime, and fear of property crime. The three measures of fear were placed as dependent variables within …

Construction Of A Sport Specific Mental Imagery Assessment Instrument Using Item Response And Classical Test Theory Methodology., John George Tew Jr Jan 1988

Construction Of A Sport Specific Mental Imagery Assessment Instrument Using Item Response And Classical Test Theory Methodology., John George Tew Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two phases are reported in the development of a sport specific Mental Imagery Assessment Instrument (MIAI). The focus in constructing this instrument was to deal with the problems identified by Hall (1985) and, at the same time, to provide a sport specific MIAI for football players that could be used for future research. In addition, it was hoped that the construction procedures for this particular MIAI could be used as a model to develop sport specific MIAIs for other sports. Thus, a secondary purpose of the study was to provide a comparative approach to test construction in the affective domain …

Phase Space Formulation Of Quantum Mechanics And The Two Dimensional Electron Gas In A Magnetic Field., Lipo Wang Jan 1988

Phase Space Formulation Of Quantum Mechanics And The Two Dimensional Electron Gas In A Magnetic Field., Lipo Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, the theory of the phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics (PSFQM) is discussed and applied to investigations of various low-temperature properties of both two- and three-dimensional electron systems. The origin of an apparent discrepancy recently reported by others between results obtained by the PSFQM and conventional (Schrodinger) quantum mechanics is discussed. A complete agreement is arrived at here by demonstrating the correct way to use the PSFQM. A general formulation is developed, through use of the PSFQM, for determining the free energy of a Fermi gas contained in an arbitrary smooth external potential and in a weak magnetic …
