Comparison Between Solutions Of Sdes And Odes, P. Sundar Jan 1988

Comparison Between Solutions Of Sdes And Odes, P. Sundar

Faculty Publications

A ratio-limit comparison between ξt, the solution of an SDE driven by a semimartingale, and Ht, the solution of an associated ODE, is proved on the set where limt→∞ξt=∞. Sufficient conditions in terms of the driving processes and the coefficients are obtained for limt→∞ξt to be ∞. © 1988.

Integrated Semigroups And Their Applications To The Abstract Cauchy Problem, Frank Neubrander Jan 1988

Integrated Semigroups And Their Applications To The Abstract Cauchy Problem, Frank Neubrander

Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with characterizations of those linear, closed, but not necessarily densely defined operators A on a Banach space E with nonempty resolvent set for which the abstract Cauchy problem u′(t) = Au(t), u(0) = x has unique, exponentially bounded solutions for every initial value x ∈ D(An). Investigating these operators we are led to the class of "integrated semigroups". Among others, this class contains the classes of strongly continuous semigroups and cosine families and the class of exponentially bounded distribution semigroups. The given characterizations of the generators of these integrated semigroups unify and generalize the classical characterizations …

Landau-Level Width: Magnetic-Field And Temperature Dependences, Lipo Wang, R. F. Oconnell Jan 1988

Landau-Level Width: Magnetic-Field And Temperature Dependences, Lipo Wang, R. F. Oconnell

Faculty Publications

We calculate the effect of level broadening on the steady part of the magnetic moment and specific heat by deriving an analytic expression for the free energy of a two-dimensional electron gas in a uniform magnetic field, with an arbitrary Landau-level broadening and at a finite temperature. Measurements of these effects may provide a new way for gaining more information about the magnetic-field and temperature dependences of the Landau-level width. This in turn may lead to information about the density of states. In the particular case of Gaussian broadening, the broadening correction to the steady magnetic moment is as large …

Well Control Problems Associated With Gas Solubility In Oil-Based Drilling Fluids., Patrick Leon O'Bryan Jan 1988

Well Control Problems Associated With Gas Solubility In Oil-Based Drilling Fluids., Patrick Leon O'Bryan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Gas contamination of an oil-based drilling fluid during drilling operations, whether it be by the flow of formation gas into the wellbore (gas kick) or by the drilling of gas-bearing formations (drilled-gas), poses a potential hazard to the drilling equipment, environment, and personnel. This danger is the greatest when bottomhole conditions are such that the gas will completely dissolve into the drilling fluid and rapidly evolve as the gas-cut drilling fluid is circulated up the well. This work summarizes a study of well control problems associated with gas solubility in oil-based drilling fluids. The solubilities of various gases (i.e., methane, …

Comprehension And Memory Of A Sexual Script: A Test Of Schema/Scripting Theory., Janis Ruth Kirsch Jan 1988

Comprehension And Memory Of A Sexual Script: A Test Of Schema/Scripting Theory., Janis Ruth Kirsch

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cognitive scientists have studied how individuals process non-sexual text, and schema/scripting theory appears to be a useful way of conceptualizing their findings. This study applied schema/scripting theory findings to sexual text and predicted that Atypical or unnecessary script actions would initially be remembered better than Typical script actions, but that over time Typical script actions would be remembered better as the generic script becomes increasingly important. The present study also incorporated findings from another line of research relevant to schema/scripting theory and predicted that the perspective taken by the reader while reading a story about a sexual encounter would affect …

An Analysis Of Rice Import Demand In Selected Asian Economies., Wijepala Rupasinghe Jayawardana Jan 1988

An Analysis Of Rice Import Demand In Selected Asian Economies., Wijepala Rupasinghe Jayawardana

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to analyze the rice import demand behavior in seven Asian countries namely, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Three rice import demand models were estimated, the direct demand model which treats imports as a function of border prices and income, the residual import demand model where the imports are the excess of consumption over domestic production, and the reduced form model which incorporates both domestic demand and supply variables. Import demand functions were estimated by the ordinary least squares (OLS) method. Seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) was …

Regional Identification Of A Concrete Bridge Using Impact-Induced Free Vibration Response., Timothy Douglas Hogue Jan 1988

Regional Identification Of A Concrete Bridge Using Impact-Induced Free Vibration Response., Timothy Douglas Hogue

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A structural identification methodology propounded by the author is used to identify the modal parameters and synthesize the flexibility matrix of a region of a prototype concrete bridge. Rigorous analytical investigation is employed first. This helps determine critical parameters of the structural model and guide the test procedure so that the best possible data can be attained. The bridge region is then tested using low-level, easily induced impact excitation. This is found to produce broad-banded response with a relatively high signal-to-noise ratio. Methods are suggested to optimize the test procedure so that it can be more systematically applied and so …

Coping With Job Loss: An Investigation Of The Impact Of Coping Resources On Coping Strategies And Outcomes., Barbara Harlock Holmes Jan 1988

Coping With Job Loss: An Investigation Of The Impact Of Coping Resources On Coping Strategies And Outcomes., Barbara Harlock Holmes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Job loss literature has tended to focus on the negative impact that job loss frequently has on the individual, while largely ignoring how people respond to or cope with the experience. The purpose of this study was to: (a) examine the coping resources that people have available when they become unemployed as possible determinants of the subsequent coping strategies they select, and (b) determine if certain coping strategies are more effective in dealing with job loss (i.e. lead to earlier re-employment) than others. Coping strategies were hypothesized to act as a mediating variable between coping resources and employment outcomes. Coping …

The Influence Of Calonectria Crotalariae On Population Development Of Heterodera Glycines On Resistant And Susceptible Soybeans., Charles Overstreet Jan 1988

The Influence Of Calonectria Crotalariae On Population Development Of Heterodera Glycines On Resistant And Susceptible Soybeans., Charles Overstreet

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Calonectria crotalariae enhanced root penetration of Lee 74 (susceptible) and Centennial (resistant) soybeans by juveniles of race 3 of Heterodera glycines. The presence of the fungus resulted in greater numbers of females and both soil and root cysts on Lee 74 during the first 30 days. Greater numbers of soil cysts were recovered from Lee 74 at 80 and 120 days and from Centennial at 120 days after inoculation with both pathogens. Root colonization by the fungus increased from 19% to 57% at 40 days on Lee 74 and from 58% to 86% on Centennial at 120 days in the …

The Relationship Between Learned Sexual Values And Adjustment In A Prison Setting., James William Robinson Jan 1988

The Relationship Between Learned Sexual Values And Adjustment In A Prison Setting., James William Robinson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The degree of environmental control exerted by female inmates was examined as a function of gender role identity. The sample was obtained at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women, the only female prison in the state. The prison environment was assumed to offer very few control options. The options studied were those under the direct authorization of the social services division of the prison, and from individuals external to the prison. It was assumed that the flexibility found in androgynous individuals would allow for a greater level of perceived control than with either the masculine or feminine gender role identity …

Global Zones Of Particle Precipitation., Muhammad Adel Miah Jan 1988

Global Zones Of Particle Precipitation., Muhammad Adel Miah

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Magnetospheric particles are precipitated at low altitude all over the globe. The study of the physics of the equatorial global zone is important for geospace environment modeling, for knowing the loss processes of radiation belt particles and for the Space Station Project. The equatorial global zone was investigated by the Phoenix-1 experiment on board the S81-1 mission in May through November, 1982. The global profile of the peak flux of quasi-trapped protons follows the line of minimum magnetic field strength, with a FWHM of $\sim$13$\sp\circ$ in latitude. The pitch angle distribution anisotropy index is found to be 19 $\pm$ 2, …

Lessons Of The Masters: Social Tension As A Creative Necessity In The Fiction Of Hawthorne, James, And Joyce., Craig Arthur Milliman Jan 1988

Lessons Of The Masters: Social Tension As A Creative Necessity In The Fiction Of Hawthorne, James, And Joyce., Craig Arthur Milliman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of talented characters reveals that three of the most influential novelists in English dealt with the often disabling image of the artist they had inherited from their Romantic forebears by insisting on dialectical tension between the artist and society as essential to the creation of literary art. The various talented characters in Hawthorne's short fiction, such as Aylmer, Rappaccini, Oberon, the Canterbury poet, the portrait painter of "The Prophetic Pictures," the woodcarver Drowne, and Owen Warland, fail to create art unless they retain certain links with their societies of origin. This tension between artist and society appears as …

Production And Evaluation Of Rapid Serological Detection Methods For Identification Of Vibrio Vulnificus And Vibrio Cholerae., Janet Gibson Simonson Jan 1988

Production And Evaluation Of Rapid Serological Detection Methods For Identification Of Vibrio Vulnificus And Vibrio Cholerae., Janet Gibson Simonson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Species within the genus Vibrio can be identified serologically through detection of species specific H antigens expressed in the core protein of the polar flagella. Cholera vibrios also exhibit a specific cell wall polysaccharide antigen (A). Antibody reactive with these specific antigens can be employed for the rapid serological identification of Vibrio isolates. Species-specific anti-H sera were produced in rabbits immunized with flagellar core protein prepared from V. vulnificus. A coagglutination reagent was constructed by arming S. aureus Cowan I cells with the anti-V. vulnificus flagellar antibody. The reagent coagglutinated 99.3% of isolates identified bacteriologically as V. vulnificus and, other …

Statistical Mechanical And Experimental Studies Of Thermodynamic Behaviour Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons., Wahyudi Budi Sediawan Jan 1988

Statistical Mechanical And Experimental Studies Of Thermodynamic Behaviour Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons., Wahyudi Budi Sediawan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Statistical mechanical studies of aromatic hydrocarbon liquids have been conducted. Aromatic rings are modeled as oblate ellipsoids interacting with a modified gaussian overlap potential. This approach has been tested by molecular dynamics simulations and shown to work well for benzene and naphthalene. Addition of quadrupolar interactions further improves the results. More molecular dynamics simulation data for the gaussian overlap potential, the modified gaussian overlap potential, and a dumbell of the modified gaussian overlap potential have also been generated, to test an existing non-spherical based perturbation theory (Fischer's theory) and a newly introduced sphericalized potential method. Both approximations work qualitatively well …

Three Essays On The Microstructure Of Financial Markets., William Jean Wilhelm Jr Jan 1988

Three Essays On The Microstructure Of Financial Markets., William Jean Wilhelm Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation is composed of three related essays on the microstructure of financial markets. The first extends the work of Glosten and Milgrom (23) by examining prices in a market where dealers are heterogeneous and information is distributed asymmetrically across market participants. The second essay is an examination of some of the special pricing problems faced by dealers in the options market. Particular attention is given to the consequences of instantaneously perfect correlation in the expected returns of options on the same underlying equity. This relation is shown to imply a systematic relation among the bid-ask spreads for such options …

The perditor species group contains nine species and one subspecies, the maculata species group …

A Community Sample's Knowledge Of, Judgment Of, And Attitudes Toward Childrearing And Child Abuse., Harriet Schoenberg Williams Jan 1988

A Community Sample's Knowledge Of, Judgment Of, And Attitudes Toward Childrearing And Child Abuse., Harriet Schoenberg Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study addressed an important void in the literature of child abuse prevention. The challenge in empirical development of preventive education in child abuse to the public lies in the identification of specific target behaviors which are (1) related to potential child abuse, and (2) amenable to education. This investigation examined individual's expectations, attitudes and beliefs toward childrearing, as well as individual's knowledge of childrearing and behavioral child management techniques. Data generated in this study also evaluated the presence of differential judgments of child abuse in a community sample. Two hundred and eighty-two community volunteers participated in this study. …

Modelling Of Passive Contaminant Transport In River Sediments., Susan Anne Savant-Malhiet Jan 1988

Modelling Of Passive Contaminant Transport In River Sediments., Susan Anne Savant-Malhiet

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Contaminant transport from riverine sediments was investigated via physical and mathematical models. Due to its remote nature, there exists a lack of understanding of transport mechanisms and rates at the sediment-water interface of rivers. This dissertation is focused on evaluation of potential abiotic transport processes which affect the movement of contaminants across this sediment-water interface. Only non-dispersive transport of passive contaminants was considered allowing the research to focus on the movement of the sediment pore water which carries the contaminants. The abiotic processes studied include the advection by flow of sediment pore water and the movement and turnover of sediment …

Dogs inoculated with Ehrlichia platys were sequentially necropsied at 1 week intervals from 7 to 35 days post inoculation. Ehrlichia platys-infected dogs had generalized lymphadenomegaly and histopathologic evidence of lymphoid hyperplasia and proliferation of resident tissue macrophages in lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. Most dogs had mild hemorrhage or edema in multiple organs, including splenic intrafollicular hemorrhages in all dogs except one. Livers had hepatocellular vacuolation in addition to portal lymphangiectasia and Kupffer cell …

Physicochemical Properties Of Brown Rice As Influenced By Gamma-Irradiation, Variety And Storage., Veronica Castro Sabularse Jan 1988

Physicochemical Properties Of Brown Rice As Influenced By Gamma-Irradiation, Variety And Storage., Veronica Castro Sabularse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Effects of gamma-irradiation, variety and storage on physicochemical properties of brown rice from three Louisiana rice varieties: Mars, a medium grain variety, Lemont and Tebonnet, long grain varieties, were determined. Cooking time was significantly reduced in Mars and Lemont at doses of 200 and 300 Krads. Irradiation increased cooking rate, water uptake at 80$\sp\circ$C, water uptake ratios, total solids content in residual cooking liquid and starch damage from 100 to 300 Krad samples. Water uptake at 96$\sp\circ$C generally decreased with increasing dose levels. Evidence indicated alterations in the rice grain structure and composition. The component drastically affected by gamma-irradiation was …

Mastitis In Single And Multiple Trait Holstein Lines., Ricardo J. Vaamonde Jan 1988

Mastitis In Single And Multiple Trait Holstein Lines., Ricardo J. Vaamonde

Cows diagnosed as having clinical mastitis and from two sire selection lines were compared to assess differences in somatic cell count scores, duration of clinical episode and number of antibiotic treatments applied. The effect of various environmental factors and type traits on somatic cell count score (SCCS) and on duration of episode was investigated and amount and cost of discarded milk was calculated. Data consisted of multiple observations on cows diagnosed as clinically infected at least once during a lactation. Single trait (ST) cows were daughters of sires selected based on predicted differences for milk. Multiple trait (MT) cows were …

The Dark Side Of Paradise: Race And Ethnicity In The Novels Of F. Scott Fitzgerald., Felipe Smith Jan 1988

The Dark Side Of Paradise: Race And Ethnicity In The Novels Of F. Scott Fitzgerald., Felipe Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

According to author and scholar Ralph Ellison, the writers of the early twentieth century (with the exception of Faulkner) adopted Mark Twain's stylistic innovations in pursuit of their personal myth instead of "recreating and extending the national myth" by continuing Twain's development of "the Negro as the symbol of man." To Ellison, these writers had capitulated to a strong current prevalent in American thought: American self-definition in racially exclusive terms. They presented as reality stereotyped portrayals of blacks and other ethnic minorities which served as "key figure (s) in a magic rite by which the white American seeks to resolve …

Application Of The Correlation Method To The Tuning Of Industrial Control Schemes., Carl Jesse Thomas Jan 1988

Application Of The Correlation Method To The Tuning Of Industrial Control Schemes., Carl Jesse Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The correlation method of finding a system's impulse response weights, based on the Wiener-Hopf integral, was studied for its application to the tuning of feedback, feedforward, and decoupling control elements in closed loop operation using only ordinary operating data. Also included in the work is a thorough study of actual data for eight typical stochastic disturbances taken from a refinery light ends unit. A disturbance signal typical of these actual signals was used throughout the tuning studies to make results obtained more practically meaningful. These actual signals were also used to demonstrate the desirability of differencing input and output data …

Three experiments were conducted, with 100 gm male rats consuming one treatment diet for three, four or eight weeks. Mineral levels used were: (1) magnesium--50 ug/gm, 160 ug/gm, 280 ug/gm, 400 ug/gm; (2) copper--0.5 ug/gm, 2.0 ug/gm, 3.5 ug/gm, 5.0 ug/gm; or (3) a combination of the severely deficient …

A Hybrid Model For Document Retrieval Systems., Zhen-Bao Zou Jan 1988

A Hybrid Model For Document Retrieval Systems., Zhen-Bao Zou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A methodology for the design of document retrieval systems is presented. First, a composite index term weighting model is developed based on term frequency statistics, including document frequency, relative frequency within document and relative frequency within collection, which can be adjusted by selecting various coefficients to fit into different indexing environments. Then, a composite retrieval model is proposed to process a user's information request in a weighted Phrase-Oriented Fixed-Level Expression (POFLE), which may apply more than Boolean operators, through two phases. That is, we have a search for documents which are topically relevant to the information request by means of …
