A Behavioral Test Of The Affinity-Seeking Model: Nonverbal Tactics Among Strangers And Acquaintances., Dominique Marie Gendrin Jan 1988

A Behavioral Test Of The Affinity-Seeking Model: Nonverbal Tactics Among Strangers And Acquaintances., Dominique Marie Gendrin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research examined the Affinity-Seeking model devised by Bell and Daly (1984). Two components of the model were considered: preinteraction expectancies constraining a social encounter and the competency of the individual as an affinity-seeker. It was hypothesized that strangers would approach a friendly target through the reciprocity strategy and an unfriendly target through the compensatory strategy by increasing behavioral cues of immediacy (e.g., eye-gaze, smiling/laughter, verbalizations, and proximity). It was hypothesized, on the other hand, that acquaintances would not increase their behavioral involvement in view of a friendly expectancy while they would compensate for an unfriendly one. The findings revealed …

Moisture Stress Effects On Selected Physiological Processes And The Efficacy Of Haloxyfop In Johnsongrass And Crabgrass., Robert Stanton Peregoy Jan 1988

Moisture Stress Effects On Selected Physiological Processes And The Efficacy Of Haloxyfop In Johnsongrass And Crabgrass., Robert Stanton Peregoy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The phytotoxicity of haloxyfop-methyl $\{$methyl 2- (4- ( (3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl) oxy) phenoxy) propanoate$\}$ is reduced when applied to grasses growing under moisture stress, but the reasons for this reduction are not known. Glasshouse studies were conducted to determine the effect of imposed moisture stress on the phytotoxicity of haloxyfop-methyl; the absorption, translocation, and metabolism of $\sp{14}$C-haloxyfop-methyl; and the partitioning of $\sp{14}$C-photoassimilates in johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) and large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.). Foliar applications of haloxyfop-methyl at 30 and 25 g ai/ha to crabgrass and johnsongrass, respectively, resulted in 92% regrowth of moisture-stressed plants and less than 12% regrowth …

Characterization And Application Of Monoclonal Antibody And Bovine Neutrophil Reactivity To Pasteurella Haemolytica Antigens., Frank William Austin Jan 1988

Characterization And Application Of Monoclonal Antibody And Bovine Neutrophil Reactivity To Pasteurella Haemolytica Antigens., Frank William Austin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Monoclonal antibodies (McAbs) were prepared against Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 (Ph-1) capsular material to identify, quantitate and purify antigens. McAbs were selected by ELISA and characterized according to their isotype, cross-reactivity with P. haemolytica and P. multocida serotypes in ELISA, antigen formalin sensitivity and ability to cause bacterial agglutination. Four groups of McAbs were established each recognizing a different epitope. Various P. haemolytica and P. multocida serotypes were found to share several epitopes demonstrating their antigenic relatedness. A colorimetric assay, based on tetrazolium dye reduction by bovine neutrophils, was adapted for the measurement and characterization of Ph-1 cytotoxin activity. Using …

The Measure Of Adolescent Social Competence (Masc): Development And Initial Validation., Timothy Augustine Cavell Jan 1988

The Measure Of Adolescent Social Competence (Masc): Development And Initial Validation., Timothy Augustine Cavell

The Measure of Adolescent Social Competence (MASC) was designed to offer a clinically practical way to assess adolescent social function within relevant contexts. The MASC is a 50-item, self-report measure constructed via the following steps: (a) item generation (N = 271 subjects from grades 7, 9, and 11); (b) item selection and development (N = 604 subjects from grades 7, 9, and 11); (c) response enumeration (N = 154 subjects from grades 7, 9, and 11); and (d) response evaluation by adult raters (e.g., parents, teachers, counselors). Initial validation of the MASC examined its relation to peer nominations, teacher ratings …

The Investigation Of Platinum-Tellurium/Aluminum-Oxide And Platinum-Antimony/Aluminum-Oxide Bimetallic Reforming Catalysts., Chi Hung Cheng Jan 1988

The Investigation Of Platinum-Tellurium/Aluminum-Oxide And Platinum-Antimony/Aluminum-Oxide Bimetallic Reforming Catalysts., Chi Hung Cheng

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

PtTe/Al$\sb2$O$\sb3$ and PtSb/Al$\sb2$O$\sb3$ bimetallics were characterized as possible reforming catalysts by kinetic studies, mechanistic investigations, and spectroscopic measurements. The results were compared with Pt/Al$\sb2$O$\sb3$ with the aim to understand the effects of tellurium and antimony on the platinum function. Coimpregnated PtTe/Al$\sb2$O$\sb3$ and PtSb/Al$\sb2$O$\sb3$ catalysts exhibited an increase in selectivity for the isomerization of n-hexane. This enhancement in selectivity can be caused either by electronic effects, which increase the specific activities for isomerization, or by geometric effects, which reduce the rate of hydrocracking. The results of the kinetic experiments, along with FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed carbon monoxide using the isotopic dilution …

The Impact Of The Anticipated And Unanticipated Components Of Public Debt On Output., Patricia A. Freeman Knight Jan 1988

The Impact Of The Anticipated And Unanticipated Components Of Public Debt On Output., Patricia A. Freeman Knight

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the impact of the anticipated and unanticipated components of government debt on real output when Barro's equations for debt growth and money growth are used as the starting points in specifying anticipated debt and money growth equations using an atheoretical statistical technique. The unanticipated debt and money variables are defined as the residual of the anticipated debt and money growth equations, respectively. Output equations are specified using the same criteria that are used to specify the anticipated debt and money growth equations, and Barro's equation for real GNP is used as the starting point in the specification. …

An Investigation Of The Relationships Among Supervisory Expertise Of The Principal, Teacher Autonomy And Environmental Robustness Of The School., Mary Sue Street

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among principal supervisory expertise and teacher work autonomy and the environmental robustness of the school. Social systems theory was the guiding theoretical framework in the design and interpretation of this study. Supervisory expertise refers to a concrete set of behaviors, skills, and/or knowledge reflecting a clinical supervision model that principals demonstrate to teachers. Teacher satisfaction with the supervisory program was also measured. Teacher autonomy refers to the independence teachers maintain in exercising discretion within their classrooms to make instructional decisions. Environmental robustness is conceptualized as the perceived dramatic content of …

Musical Reverberations: Echoes Of Friedrich Schlegel And Heinrich Heine In Nietzsche's Dionysian Aesthetics., Linda Fallon Duncan Jan 1988

Musical Reverberations: Echoes Of Friedrich Schlegel And Heinrich Heine In Nietzsche's Dionysian Aesthetics., Linda Fallon Duncan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Not only did Friedrich Nietzsche acknowledge his stylistic affinity for Heinrich Heine, but both writers--despite their overt criticism of certain aspects of German Romanticism--manifest significant parallels in style with the aesthetic formulations of the Romantic theorist Friedrich Schlegel for a new direction in contemporary literature. Friedrich Schlegel's Fragment 116 of the Athenaum, for example, designates this new poetic direction as "progressive universal poetry," and characterizes it as a poetic form capable of embracing the fluctuating multiplicity of the surrounding world as well as reflecting the developing ideas and individual personality of the poet-creator. The paradoxical result is a poetry that …

Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Mrna Detection In Human Atherosclerotic Plaques By In Situ Hybridization, J. N. Wilcox, K. M. Smith, L. T. Williams, S. M. Schwartz, D. Gordon

Faculty Publications

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) mRNA, and mRNA for its receptor, have been localized to specific cell types within the human atherosclerotic plaque, using in situ hybridization. The predominant cell types found to express PDGF A and B chain mRNA are mesenchymal-appearing intimal cells and endothelial cells, respectively, with little or no expression detected in macrophages. The distribution of PDGF receptor mRNA containing cells was also examined and found to be localized predominantly in the plaque intima.

Enhanced Multidimensional Luminescence Measurements Through Cyclodextrin Complexation, I. M. Warner, G. Nelson, G. Patonay, L. Blyshak, S. L. Neal

Faculty Publications

The authors discuss the use of CDxs (Cyclodextrins) to enhance selective detection via EEM (Excitation Emission Matrix) measurements. Particular emphasis will be placed on the enhanced measurement of luminophors complexed with CDxs in the presence of select alcohols and quenchers. In addition, the use of solvent extraction and data analysis to reduce the dimensionality of the acquired EEM will be discussed. The use CDxs and quenchers can produce a single- or dual-component system from a more complex mixture, which can then be used as model component spectra. This type of data analysis scheme is presented and discussed. In this study, …

Purification, Partial Characterization, And Seroreactivity Of A Genuswide 60-Kilodalton Legionella Protein Antigen, Chou-Pong Pau, B. B. Plikaytis, G. M. Carlone, I. M. Warner

Faculty Publications

A genuswide protein antigen extracted from Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (strain Philadelphia 1) cells was enriched by differential pelleting and ammonium sulfate precipitation and subsequently purified with a combination of high-performance size-exclusion and ion-exchange chromatography. The protein has an apparent molecular weight of 650,000 before and 63,000 after urea (5 M) treatment, as determined by size-exclusion chromatography. These proteins resolved to a single band of 60,000 after sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The urea-treated protein had an isoelectric point of 5.8. This purified 60-kilodalton protein reacted with a convalescent-phase serum sample from a patient with legionellosis and rabbit immune sera …

Thermal Properties Of A Series Of Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Poly(Methacrylates)., R. Duran, D. Guillon, Ph Gramain, A. Skoulios

Faculty Publications

The thermal behavior of a series of side-chain liquid crystalline poly(methacrylates) has been investigated by thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and dilatometry. The DSC study has shown that long times are required to reach equilibrium even at temperatures above the glass transition. The thermotropic polymorphism has been determined as a function of the length of the flexible spacer. Glass transitions in the mesomorphic state have been discussed. Dilatometry has shown that, for the 'glassy' mesomorphic phases, the partial specific volume of the flexible spacer is close to that corresponding to the crystal and the isotropic liquid; and that, …

Ribosomal Protein Synthesis Is Not Regulated At The Translational Level In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae: Balanced Accumulation Of Ribosomal Proteins L16 And Rp59 Is Mediated By Turnover Of Excess Protein., Y. F. Tsay, J. R. Thompson, M. O. Rotenberg, J. C. Larkin, J. L. Woolford Jan 1988

C. Larkin, J. L. Woolford

Faculty Publications

We have investigated the mechanisms whereby equimolar quantities of ribosomal proteins accumulate and assemble into ribosomes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Extra copies of the cry1 or RPL16 genes encoding ribosomal proteins rp59 or L16 were introduced into yeast by transformation. Excess cry1 or RPL16 mRNA accumulated in polyribosomes in these cells and was translated at wild-type rates into rp59 or L16 proteins. These excess proteins were degraded until their levels reached those of other ribosomal proteins. Identical results were obtained when the transcription of RPL16A was rapidly induced using GAL1-RPL16A promoter fusions, including a construct in which the entire …

Dehalogenation In Marine Sediments Containing Natural Sources Of Halophenols., G. M. King Jan 1988

Dehalogenation In Marine Sediments Containing Natural Sources Of Halophenols., G. M. King

Faculty Publications

Halophenols such as 2,4-dibromophenol (DBP) occur naturally in some marine sediments, as a consequence of various animal and algal activities. In an earlier study, DBP was observed in the burrow microenvironment of the hemichordate Saccoglossus kowalewskii. At the concentrations found in the burrow lining, aerobic respiration appeared to be inhibited significantly relative to anaerobic catabolism. This effect, as well as factors contributing to the degradation of DBP, has been documented further here. Results from the addition of radiolabeled DBP to oxic and anoxic sediment slurries and growth experiments with aerobic and anaerobic enrichments suggested that aerobes did not significantly metabolize …

Determination Of The Range In Binding-Site Densities Of Rat Skin Heparin Chains With High Binding Affinities For Antithrombin., A. A. Horner, M. Kusche, U. Lindahl, C. B. Peterson Jan 1988

Determination Of The Range In Binding-Site Densities Of Rat Skin Heparin Chains With High Binding Affinities For Antithrombin., A. A. Horner, M. Kusche, U. Lindahl, C. B. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Rat skin heparin proteoglycans vary markedly in the proportions of their constituent polysaccharide chains that have high binding affinity for antithrombin. As the proportion of such chains in a proteoglycan rises, their degree of affinity for antithrombin also increases [Horner (1987) Biochem. J. 244, 693-698]. The antithrombin-binding-site densities of such chains have now been determined, by measuring heparin-induced enhancement of the intrinsic fluorescence of antithrombin and by chemical analysis for the disaccharide sequence glucuronosyl-N-sulphoglucosaminyl (3,6-di-O-sulphate), which is unique to this site in heparin [Lindahl, Bäckström, Thunberg & Leder (1980) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 77, 6551-6555]. Antithrombin-binding-site density ranged from …

Divergence Of The Recent Trends In Coronary Mortality For The Four Major Race-Sex Groups In The United States, C. Sempos, R. Cooper, M. G. Kovar, M. Mcmillen

Faculty Publications

Since 1976 there has been a leveling off or slowdown in the rate of decline in coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality. The age-adjusted absolute annual rate of decline in CHD mortality rates during 1968-75 (Δ rate/100,000 population/year) was virtually identical for White males (-7.54), Black males (-7.85), and Black females (-7.20), and somewhat lower for White females (-4.25). During 1976-85, however, the secular trends diverged considerably. Age-adjusted rates continued to decline at the same annual rate for White males, while the decline was approximately half as steep for the other three race-sex groups. During 1976-85 there was also a leveling …

Ergodic Actions Of Semi-Direct Product Groups., Edgar Navarro Reyes Jan 1988

Ergodic Actions Of Semi-Direct Product Groups., Edgar Navarro Reyes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We describe ergodic Borel actions of a semi-direct product group $K$ $\times\sb{s}$ $G$ on a standard Borel space where G is a group acting on a compact group K by automorphisms. In the canonical action of G on the dual K of K we assume each G-orbit in K is finite. This condition is automatically satisfied if K is a compact connected semi-simple Lie group. We discuss amenable actions and relatively weakly-mixing actions of this semi-direct product group.

Stratigraphic Framework And Sedimentary Facies Of A Clastic Shelf-Margin: Wilcox Group (Paleocene-Eocene), Central Louisiana., Philip Lowry Jan 1988

Stratigraphic Framework And Sedimentary Facies Of A Clastic Shelf-Margin: Wilcox Group (Paleocene-Eocene), Central Louisiana., Philip Lowry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A strike-oriented trend of Wilcox oil and gas production in central Louisiana marks the location of an early Tertiary clastic shelf-margin. The shelf-margin contained a central unstable region flanked by two stable regions. The stable regions occurred where there was no significant progradation beyond the location of the underlying shelf-margins. Conversely, the unstable region occurred where progradation extended basinward of the underlying shelf-margins. Seven depositional sequences can be recognized within the shelf-margin. The vertical arrangement of these sequences shows that migration of the margin was negligible throughout Wilcox deposition, thereby suggesting a balance between subsidence and deposition. Through numerical simulation, …
