Methods Of Parameter Estimation Of Linear Regression Models For Yield Prediction., Man Yong Shin Jan 1989

Methods Of Parameter Estimation Of Linear Regression Models For Yield Prediction., Man Yong Shin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Different parameter estimation methods of yield prediction models were investigated using data from the Southwide Loblolly Pine Seed Source Study. This project consisted of three distinct studies. Each study dealt with a possible situation in which other parameter estimation methods rather than the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator might be used. Three different evaluation statistics were computed to select the "best" estimation method for each situation. The objective of the first study was to select the best estimator for a yield model which had multicollinearity among independent variables. Three types of biased estimators were compared with the ordinary least squares …

From Forest, Stream, And Sea: Aspects Of Self-Sufficiency In The Nineteenth Century Louisiana Diet. (Volumes I And Ii)., James Patrick Whelan Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies of foodstuff self-sufficiency in the antebellum South have shown that during the middle third of the nineteenth century, as represented by the census years 1840, 1850 and 1860, certain regions of Louisiana suffered from meat production deficits. It has been assumed by most interested scholars that these deficits were overcome by importing pork and beef from the midwest or Upper South. Other possible sources of meat supplements that have not been generally considered are the wild game and fishery resources of the state. Hunting and fishing have long traditions as important activities in the South in general and in …

Models And Tests In Functional Morphology: The Significance Of Description And Integration, Dominique G. Homberger Dec 1988

Models And Tests In Functional Morphology: The Significance Of Description And Integration, Dominique G. Homberger

Faculty Publications

SYNOPSIS: Functional-anatomical work on complex structural systems is handicapped by several difficulties: (1) Lack of established guidelines on how to select the structures that are relevant for the intended study, (2) lack of methods to check the accuracy of the description of a system's morphology, and (3) the need to integrate a large mass of results obtained through a variety of approaches taken from different disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, physics, biochemistry, ecology and evolutionary biology. Suggestions to alleviate some of the problems include (1) to use information on the physiological and physical properties of the tissues in a system …

The UNISOR on-line nuclear orientation facility (UNISOR/NOF) consists of a3He-4He dilution refrigerator on line to the isotope separator. Nuclei are implanted directly into a target foil which is soldered to the bottom accessed cold finger of the refrigerator. A 1.5 T superconducting magnet polarizes the ferromagnetic target foils and determines the axis of symmetry. Up to eight gamma detectors can be positioned around the refrigerator, each 9 cm from the target. A unique feature of this system is that the k=4 term in the directional distribution function can be directly and unambigously deduced so that a single solution for the …

The KLM conditions are conditions that are necessary and sufficient for a phase-space function to be a Wigner distribution function (WDF). We apply them here to discuss three questions that have arisen recently: (1) For which WDFs P0 will the map P→P0*P be a quantum dynamical map - i.e. a map that takes WDFs to WDFs? (2) What are necessary and sufficient conditions for a phase-space gaussian to be a WDF? (3) Are there non-gaussian, non-negative WDFs? © 1988.

Modeling Wetland Loss In Coastal Louisiana: Geology, Geography, And Human Modifications, James H. Cowan Jr., R. Eugene Turner Nov 1988

Modeling Wetland Loss In Coastal Louisiana: Geology, Geography, And Human Modifications, James H. Cowan Jr., R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Habitat change in coastal Louisiana from 1955/6 to 1978 was analyzed to determine the influence of geological and man-made changes on landscape patterns within 7.5 min quadrangle maps. Three quantitative analyses were used: principal components analysis, multiple regression analysis, and cluster analysis.

Regional differences in land loss rates reflect variations in geology and the deltaic growth/decay cycles, man-induced changes in hydrology (principally canal dredging and spoil banking), and land-use changes (principally urbanization and agricultural expansion). The coastal zone is not homogeneous with respect to these variables and the interaction between causal factors leading to wetland loss is therefore locally variable …

Independent Oscillator Model Of A Heat Bath: Exact Diagonalization Of The Hamiltonian, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell Oct 1988

Independent Oscillator Model Of A Heat Bath: Exact Diagonalization Of The Hamiltonian, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

The problem of a quantum oscillator coupled to an independent-oscillator model of a heat bath is discussed. The transformation to normal coordinates is explicitly constructed using the method of Ullersma. With this transformation an alternative derivation of an exact formula for the oscillator free energy is constructed. The various contributions to the oscillator energy are calculated, with the aim of further understanding this formula. Finally, the limitations of linear coupling models, such as that used by Ullersma, are discussed in the form of some critical remarks. © 1988 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Quantum Oscillator In A Blackbody Radiation Field Ii. Direct Calculation Of The Energy Using The Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell Aug 1988

Quantum Oscillator In A Blackbody Radiation Field Ii. Direct Calculation Of The Energy Using The Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

An earlier exact result (Phys. Rev. Lett. 55 (1985), 2273) for the free energy of an oscillatordipole interacting with the radiation field is obtained using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. A key feature of the earlier calculation, a remarkable formula for the free energy of the oscillator, is obtained in the form of a corresponding formula for the oscillator energy. This confirms, by a longer, more conventional proof, the earlier result. An advantage of this present method is that separate contributions to the energy can be isolated and discussed. Explicit, closed-form expressions are given and the high-temperature limit is discussed. © 1988.

The Systematics Of Nerodia Clarkii And Nerodia Fasciata, Patrick Allan Myer May 1988

The Systematics Of Nerodia Clarkii And Nerodia Fasciata, Patrick Allan Myer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The systematic relationship between the Gulf saltmarsh snake, Nerodia fasciata clarkii. and the freshwater subspecies, N. f. confluens. N. f. fasciata, and N. f. pictiventris, is re—evaluated using morphological characters that reflect head shape. Changes in character-states are analyzed from areas of contact into the populations of the freshwater forms. Beyond the narrow zones where intermediates are found there is no morphological evidence suggesting genetic introgression of clarkii genes into the freshwater populations. Discriminant analysis of the head scale measurements also suggests the significant division of the saltmarsh and freshwater forms. Ecological analysis reveals that interbreeding between the forms is …

Dissipative Quantum Tunneling: Quantum Langevin Equation Approach, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell Mar 1988

Dissipative Quantum Tunneling: Quantum Langevin Equation Approach, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

The quantum Langevin equation is used as the basis for a discussion of dissipative quantum tunneling. A general analysis, including strong coupling and non-markovian (memory) effects, is given for the case of tunneling through a parabolic barrier at zero temperature in the presence of linear passive dissipation. It is shown that dissipation always decreases the tunneling rate below the barrier and increases transmission above the barrier. As a particular application, the case of the resistively shunted Josephson junction is considered. Simple closed form expressions for the tunneling rate and for the noise power spectrum are obtained and compared with results …

Marsh Management Plans In Practice: Do They Work In Coastal Louisiana, Usa?, James H. Cowan Jr., R. Eugene Turner, Donald R. Cahoon

Faculty Publications

Louisiana's coastal wetlands represent about 41% of the nation's total and are extensively managed for fish, fur, and waterfowl. Marsh management plans (MMPs) are currently used to avoid potential user conflicts and are believed to be a best management practice for specific management goals. In this article, we define MMPs and examine their variety, history, impacts, and future.

A MMP is an organized written plan submitted to state and federal permitting agencies for approval and whose purpose is to regulate wetland habitat quantity and quality (control land loss and enhance productivity). MMPs are usually implemented by making structural modifications in …
