A Comprehensive Methodology For Algorithm Characterization, Regularization And Mapping Into Optimal Vlsi Arrays., Hassan Reda Barada
A Comprehensive Methodology For Algorithm Characterization, Regularization And Mapping Into Optimal Vlsi Arrays., Hassan Reda Barada
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation provides a fairly comprehensive treatment of a broad class of algorithms as it pertains to systolic implementation. We describe some formal algorithmic transformations that can be utilized to map regular and some irregular compute-bound algorithms into the best fit time-optimal systolic architectures. The resulted architectures can be one-dimensional, two-dimensional, three-dimensional or nonplanar. The methodology detailed in the dissertation employs, like other methods, the concept of dependence vector to order, in space and time, the index points representing the algorithm. However, by differentiating between two types of dependence vectors, the ordering procedure is allowed to be flexible and time …
Influence Of An Expanded Framework Of Shopping Motivations And Inclusion Of Non-Store Retailers On The Choice Set Formation Process., Jill Suzanne Attaway
Influence Of An Expanded Framework Of Shopping Motivations And Inclusion Of Non-Store Retailers On The Choice Set Formation Process., Jill Suzanne Attaway
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Much of the research in marketing involves the study of consumer choice behavior. This study in concerned with the development and testing of a theory of retail choice or patronage. The last several years have witnessed dramatic changes in the retailing industry. In addition to the traditional department, discount, and specialty stores, consumers may increasingly choose from a wide variety of non-store retailers. Thus, any comprehensive study of retail outlet choice behavior should incorporate all of the alternatives available to the consumer. This research developed a model of patronage which extended previous research with the addition of alternative retail outlets …
An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Turbulent Jet Impingement In A Confined Crossflow., Keun Sun Chang
An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Turbulent Jet Impingement In A Confined Crossflow., Keun Sun Chang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An experimental and computational investigation is made for the turbulent flow field generated by a jet discharging transversely into a confined moving stream. For jet to cross flow mean velocity ratios (R) equal to 2 and 4, measurements are made using a laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV) in conjunction with a tracker processor. Quantities measured include mean velocities, turbulence intensities, turbulent shear stress, and dissipation rates of the turbulent kinetic energy. The jet flow Reynolds numbers investigated are 1.5 $\times$ 10$\sp4$ for R = 2 and 3.0 $\times$ 10$\sp4$ for R = 4. The structured nature of the turbulent flow field is …
Using Tilted-Ring Models And Numerical Hydrodynamics To Study The Structure, Kinematics And Dynamics Of Hi Disks In Galaxies., Dimitris Michael Christodoulou
Using Tilted-Ring Models And Numerical Hydrodynamics To Study The Structure, Kinematics And Dynamics Of Hi Disks In Galaxies., Dimitris Michael Christodoulou
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We model the structure, kinematics, and dynamics of neutral hydrogen gas in galaxies. Our attention is focused on specific features that are commonly observed mainly in the 21-cm line, such as twists, warps and polar rings. The intimate connection between these features and the presumed dark halos of galaxies is analyzed with the intention to discover ways to probe the dark matter of individual galaxies by simply observing the distribution and kinematics of the luminous matter. An important, intermediate step in this analysis is to demonstrate that the twists that appear in the isovelocity maps of many spiral galaxies (and …
Genotype-By-Environment Interactions, Stability Across Environments, And Tolerance To Low Soil Fertility Of Wheat In Louisiana., Jalaluddin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Genotypic stability of performance across environments in general, or across levels of a specific environmental factor in particular, is an important concern of plant breeders. The objectives of this research were to examine the relationships and repeatability of the commonly used stability statistics, the relative merits of these statistics in the stability analyses of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield and test weight, and the relationship of genotypic tolerance to low soil-fertility with yield stability. Yield and test weight data of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station (LAES) winter wheat performance trials from 37 year-location combinations were used in the stability analyses. …
Anton Von Webern's String Quartet In A Minor (Ca. 1907), M.121: A Reconstruction., Edwin Lyle Haugan
Anton Von Webern's String Quartet In A Minor (Ca. 1907), M.121: A Reconstruction., Edwin Lyle Haugan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Webern's String Quartet in A Minor (ca. 1907), M.121 has survived in fair-copy performance parts for violin II and cello and twenty-six pages of sketches. In this study, the score has been reconstructed on the basis of those sources. This intensely expressive composition, which, with 269 measures, is one of Webern's most extensive movements, exhibits great motivic concentration, richly polyphonic texture, and sections in which tonality is suspended. Evidence suggests that it was played under Webern's direction. In Chapter I, the nature and extent of the problems encountered in reconstructing the score are described. Autograph sources are incomplete for some …
A Framework For Efficient Execution Of Logic Programs., Sudharsan R. Iyengar
A Framework For Efficient Execution Of Logic Programs., Sudharsan R. Iyengar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The focus of this dissertation is to develop an efficient framework for sequential execution of logic programs. Within this framework the logic programs are executed by pruning the goal-search tree whenever applicable. Three new concepts for pruning of computation during execution of logic programs are introduced. (1) Failure-binding. A Failure-binding for a literal is a binding which when applied to the literal fails the goal obtained from the literal. Failure-bindings for a literal are identified by analyzing the goal-tree of a goal which is obtained from the literal. The failure-bindings for a literal are used for intelligent backtracking based on …
Hypercube-Based Topologies With Incremental Link Redundancy., Shahram Latifi
Hypercube-Based Topologies With Incremental Link Redundancy., Shahram Latifi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Hypercube structures have received a great deal of attention due to the attractive properties inherent to their topology. Parallel algorithms targeted at this topology can be partitioned into many tasks, each of which running on one node processor. A high degree of performance is achievable by running every task individually and concurrently on each node processor available in the hypercube. Nevertheless, the performance can be greatly degraded if the node processors spend much time just communicating with one another. The goal in designing hypercubes is, therefore, to achieve a high ratio of computation time to communication time. The dissertation addresses …
Re-Inventing The Public Sphere: Critical Theory, Social Responsibility, Schools, And The Press., John Pace Konopak
Re-Inventing The Public Sphere: Critical Theory, Social Responsibility, Schools, And The Press., John Pace Konopak
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the contemporary discourses of journalism and pedagogy from the standpoint of critical theory to assess the impact of technocratic rationality and instrumental logic on the practices of communication and education. It is premised on the observation that, spurred by the imperatives of trans-national capital accumulation, privatization inimical to democratic interests has begun to colonize public education. The study represents an effort to reactivate a concept and rhetoric of "social responsibility" that would animate a project of reclaiming cultural space to be occupied by a "public sphere," in a struggle analagous to that waged against feudalism and monarchical …

Ecological Studies Of Velvetbean Caterpillar, Anticarsia Gemmatalis Hubner, Pupae In Louisiana Soybean Fields., Joon-Ho Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The microhabitat distribution of velvetbean caterpillar (VBC), Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was studied in soybean field cages and fields during 1985, 1986 and 1987. Larval density did not affect pupal horizontal distribution patterns related to direction and distance from the plant row. Pupae were found equally on both sides of soybean plant rows in a cage study. Pupae were found on and below the soil surface, but not on the plant. In 51 cm row spacing, both equal number and similar dispersion pattern of pupae were found on either side of the plant row. In 91 cm row spacing, …
Molecular Genetic And Biochemical Analyses Of A Dna Repair Gene From Serratia Marcescens., Keith Eugene Murphy
Molecular Genetic And Biochemical Analyses Of A Dna Repair Gene From Serratia Marcescens., Keith Eugene Murphy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In Escherichia coli, the SOS response and two 3-methyladenine DNA glycosylases (TagI and TagII) are required for repair of DNA damaged by alkylating agents such as methyl methanesulfonate (MMS). Mutations of the recA gene eliminate the SOS response. TagI and TagII are encoded by the tag and alkA genes, respectively. A gene (rpr) encoding 3-methyladenine DNA glycosylase activity was isolated from the Gram-negative bacterium Serratia marcescens. The gene, localized to a 1.5-kilobase pair SmaI-HindIII restriction fragment, was cloned into plasmid pUC18. The clone complemented E. coli tag alkA and recA mutations for MMS resistance. The rpr gene did not, however, …
A Catalyst For Change: The Libretti Of Jean -Philippe Rameau's 'Tragedies En Musique', (1733-1764)., Jonathan Philip Joseph Radvan
A Catalyst For Change: The Libretti Of Jean -Philippe Rameau's 'Tragedies En Musique', (1733-1764)., Jonathan Philip Joseph Radvan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Jean-Philippe Rameau was the most celebrated composer of opera and the foremost music theorist in eighteenth century France and great attention has justly been given to his musical and theoretical works, but there has been no corresponding study, such as this one, of the libretti of his operas, which depart from the precepts of neo-classical drama and reflect a new sentimental age. The librettists of the tragic operas of Rameau introduced many innovations to the tragic genre, hitherto forbidden by the rigid canons of neo-classicism. They were free to do so because opera was a relatively new genre which could …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation consists of two parts. In part A, the isolation and structure elucidation of secondary metabolites from the genus Rudbeckia are described. A comprehensive review of newly reported sesquiterpene lactones published during 1986 and 1987 is presented in part B. Part A. As part of a biochemical systematic study within the family Asteraceae, seven species of the genus Rudbeckia were investigated for secondary terpenoid metabolites. This study resulted in the isolation of 42 compounds, of which 10 are new natural products. The compounds include sesquiterpene esters, pseudoguaianolides, germacrolides, eudesmanolides, lignanes and flavonols among others. The new compounds are 6$\alpha$-hydroxycostic …
Effect Of Knowledge On Teachers' Interactive Thinking And Children's Overhand Throwing Performance., Edward Walkwitz
Effect Of Knowledge On Teachers' Interactive Thinking And Children's Overhand Throwing Performance., Edward Walkwitz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the effects of knowledge of subject matter (overhand throwing) and of throwing-specific instructional strategies on teacher's interactive thinking. The impact of these two categories of teacher knowledge on lesson objectives, the quality of skill practice, and kindergartners' overhand throwing development over a unit of instruction were also explored. Eight kindergarten classroom teachers who possessed high generic teaching skill competence taught a six-week overhand throwing unit to the children (N = 150) in their intact classes. Prior to the unit, four of the teachers were exposed to a training program that increased their knowledge of overhand throwing. Four …

Small Sample Calorimetry, And Specific Heat Of Gadolinium(1)Barium(2-X)Strontium(X)Copper(3)Oxygen(7)., Carter Harrison Watson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The development of an automated small sample (0.5 to 50mg) calorimeter is discussed and evaluated. With this calorimeter, measurements of the specific heat of Gd$\sb1$Ba$\sb{\rm 2-x}$Sr$\sb{\rm x}$Cu$\sb3$O$\sb7$ for x = 0, 0.25, and 0.5 in the temperature range 0.6 to 3 K are reported. Measurements on the x = 0 sample agree with data collected by other groups. In addition, measurements in magnetic fields from 0 to 3 T for the x = 0 sample are reported. In each case a peak in the specific heat at the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (the Neel temperature) is recorded and analyzed. Strontium doping …
Three Essays On The Determinants And Effects Of Public Sector Bargaining Laws., Melissa S. Waters
Three Essays On The Determinants And Effects Of Public Sector Bargaining Laws., Melissa S. Waters
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The theoretical foundation of this model is the economic theory of regulation as developed by Stigler; in addition, modifications of the economic or special interest theory implied by the Public Choice school of thought are employed. A synthesis of these two theories of regulation, then, provides the framework upon which to develop a general model of the causes and consequences of laws regulating the bargaining rights of state employees. Topic One is devoted exclusively to the determinants of state-wide bargaining rights laws. The data are pooled over two years, and state laws are classified into one of three possible categories: …
Essays On The Components Of The Bid-Ask Spread., Pei-Hwang Wei
Essays On The Components Of The Bid-Ask Spread., Pei-Hwang Wei
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The presence of the bid-ask spread causes equilibrium prices to deviate from transaction prices. More importantly, the components of the spread--the order component, the inventory component, and the information component--have different impacts on transaction prices. In general, the order and the inventory components induce negative correlation in successive transaction price changes. On the other hand, transaction prices will form a martingale if only the information component exists. This dissertation is composed of three related essays that utilize this general relationship between transaction prices and the components of the spread. The first essay employs a cross-sectional analysis that relates components of …
The Development Of A Fetal Uterine Cell In Vitro Coculture System For Mammalian Embryos., Klaus Enrique Wiemer
The Development Of A Fetal Uterine Cell In Vitro Coculture System For Mammalian Embryos., Klaus Enrique Wiemer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In Experiment I, 125 two-pronuclear murine ova were cultured in either Ham's F-10 plus l5% human serum (HF-10h), on a monolayer of human uterine fibroblasts (HUC) or fetal bovine uterine fibroblasts (FBUC). After 96 hours in culture, 2.4% embryos in HF-10h were viable compared with 45.2% and 61% for embryos on HUC and FBUC, respectively. Results suggest that monolayers were advantageous to medium alone for culturing murine embryos. Experiment II was conducted to assess the development of 117 bovine embryos in HF-10 (Treatment A), on a monolayer of FBUC (Treatment B) or hormone-pretreated FBUC (Treatment C). Embryo viability assessed at …
New Learning And Control Algorithms For Neural Networks., Chung Hwa Youn
New Learning And Control Algorithms For Neural Networks., Chung Hwa Youn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Neural networks offer distributed processing power, error correcting capability and structural simplicity of the basic computing element. Neural networks have been found to be attractive for applications such as associative memory, robotics, image processing, speech understanding and optimization. Neural networks are self-adaptive systems that try to configure themselves to store new information. This dissertation investigates two approaches to improve performance: better learning and supervisory control. A new learning algorithm called the Correlation Continuous Unlearning (CCU) algorithm is presented. It is based on the idea of removing undesirable information that is encountered during the learning period. The control methods proposed in …

Tuber disks from four cultivars of Solanum tuberosum L. were cultured on a Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with B5 vitamins, 3.0% sucrose, 0.7% phytagar and ratios of indole-3-actyl-aspartic acid (IAAa) and zeatin riboside (ZR). No shoots were regenerated from Red LaSoda. Russet Burbank, Desiree, and LaBelle tuber disks produced shoots over a range of IAAa and ZR ratios. The greatest number of shoots was regenerated from Russet Burbank at 1 $\mu$M IAAa and 8 $\mu$M ZR. Different potato cultivars were also tested for their responses to Agrobacterium infections. Growth stage of the bacterial cultures and exposure duration of tuber …
Feeding And Foraging Behaviors Of Subterranean Termites (Isoptera:Rhinotermitidae)., Keith Scott Delaplane
Feeding And Foraging Behaviors Of Subterranean Termites (Isoptera:Rhinotermitidae)., Keith Scott Delaplane
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Six studies were done on feeding and foraging behaviors of three species of subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), and R. virginicus (Banks) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae). When presented with four equal wood blocks, C. formosanus did not forage randomly but concentrated on a few preferred blocks. When R. flavipes and C. formosanus were each placed in foraging arenas with linear, successive wood blocks, C. formosanus consumed a greater percentage dry mass of a wood block before moving to the next block (10.3%) than did R. flavipes (4.2%). Groups of C. formosanus were offered wood blocks that differed in initial …
Race Relations And Community Development: The Education Of Blacks In New Orleans, 1862-1960., Donald E. Devore
Race Relations And Community Development: The Education Of Blacks In New Orleans, 1862-1960., Donald E. Devore
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Throughout the history of the United States individuals and groups have used education as a means to improve their status in America--economically, politically, and socially. When slaves gained their freedom between 1862 and 1865, they, too, looked to education as a way to ameliorate the harmful effects of over two hundred years of slavery. In New Orleans freedmen and those free before the war viewed education almost as a panacea to the many problems within the black community. Black New Orleanians realized, of course, that the gains derived from education would take time to filter throughout the entire community. During …
A Density-Based General Greedy Channel Routing Algorithm In Vlsi Design Automation., Tai-Tsung Ho
A Density-Based General Greedy Channel Routing Algorithm In Vlsi Design Automation., Tai-Tsung Ho
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
One of the most important forms of routing strategies is called "channel routing". This approach allows us to reduce the extremely difficult VLSI layout problem to a collection of simpler subproblems. For channel routing problems, most frequently mentioned heuristic algorithms use parameters derived from experiments to approach the routing solution without carefully considering the effect of each selected wire segment to the final routing solution. In this dissertation, we propose a new channel routing algorithm in the two-layer restricted-Manhattan routing model (2-RM) in detail. There are three phases involved in developing the new routing algorithm. In the first phase, we …

Toxicity Of Permethrin To Procambarus Clarkii, And The Effects Of Permethrin-Induced Density Reduction And Supplemental Feeding On Stunted Crawfish Populations., Herman Henry Jarboe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The acute toxicity of permethrin to red swamp crawfish (Procambarus clarkii) was evaluated in laboratory studies. The mean static acute 96-h LC50 of permethrin to red swamp crawfish 8-12 mm (0.017 g), 25-35 mm (0.64 g), 45-55 mm (2.45 g), and 65-75 mm total length (TL) (8.98 g) was 0.44, 0.85, 1.30, and 0.81 $\mu$g/L, respectively. Permethrin toxicity did not differ among immature male, mature male and female P. clarkii. Crawfish surviving permethrin exposure exhibited no differences in post-exposure growth, survival, maturity attainment, or the production of viable young when compared to non-exposed controls (P $>$ 0.2). At the …
Molecular Characterization Of Fall Armyworm Mitochondrial-Dna (Spodoptera Frugiperda (J. E. Smith);)., Li Dao Ke
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Chapter I. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was isolated, purified from pooled samples of fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, and characterized. The yield of mtDNA from adults ranged from 45 to 114 ng per moth. Entire mtDNA from adult FAW showed 1 to 3 electrophoretic bands when electrophoresed on agarose gels. When digested with SalI or XhoI restriction endonucleases, all DNA forms co-migrated as single bands with the same mobility. XbaI cleaved the mtDNA into three fragments of 8083 $\pm$ 524, 6179 $\pm$ 430, and 1990 $\pm$ 140 base pairs (bp). The FAW mitochondrial genome size was calculated to be 16,253 $\pm$ …
The Capacity Of Artificial Neural Networks Using The Delta Rule., Donald Louis Prados
The Capacity Of Artificial Neural Networks Using The Delta Rule., Donald Louis Prados
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Over the past several years, several papers have been published on the capacity of Hopfield neural networks. It has been shown that, using the Hebbian rule, the capacity of the Hopfield model is approximately N/4logN. The number of patterns one can store in a neural network, however, can be greatly increased by using learning algorithms other than the Hebbian rule such as the delta rule. The motivation behind this dissertation is to study, both analytically and experimentally, the information capacity of various neural network models using a modified version of the delta-rule algorithm. This modified version of the delta-rule algorithm …
Effects Of Genetic Traits On Nonlint Trash And Nep Content Of Cotton, Gossypium Hirsutum L., Ricardo Gabriel Novick
Effects Of Genetic Traits On Nonlint Trash And Nep Content Of Cotton, Gossypium Hirsutum L., Ricardo Gabriel Novick
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Gin induced lint quality problems (neps, short fiber content, seed-coat fragments and reductions in lint turnout) need the consideration of the entire cotton production system. Genetic traits could help reduce seed-cotton trash and/or improve cleanability at the gin. Twelve near-isolines involving four leaf shapes (okra, semi-okra, super-okra and normal), two bract types (frego and normal), two leaf-pubescence levels (semi-smoothness and hairy) and certain trait combinations were grown during 1985, 1986, and 1987 at three locations in Louisiana (Alexandria, Bossier City, and St. Joseph), and harvested with a spindle-picker. Seedcotton samples were ginned on a cut-down version of a commercial gin …
Optimal Design And Control Of Distribution System Capacitors., Nugroho Iwan Santoso
Optimal Design And Control Of Distribution System Capacitors., Nugroho Iwan Santoso
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The rapidly escalating costs of generation and transmission facilities as well as energy production have focussed attention on the need to optimize system capacity release and energy losses. The problem is generally solved by controlling the voltage or reactive power which also has a pivotal role within the distribution automatization schemes. A review of reactive power compensators and methodologies in designing and controlling distribution capacitors is given. In the presence of voltage source harmonics, a local load reactive power compensation method, cost-constrained power factor optimization using an LC compensator, is discussed. A new methodology based on a piecewise method for …
Influence Of Carriers On Rhizosphere Colonization By Inoculant Bradyrhizobium Japonicum., Marcelle Mary Savoy
Influence Of Carriers On Rhizosphere Colonization By Inoculant Bradyrhizobium Japonicum., Marcelle Mary Savoy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Organic and inorganic materials are used extensively as carriers in the preparation of commercial soybean inocula. These carriers facilitate application of inocula and promote survival of soybean rhizobia (Bradyrhizobium japonicum) during storage, but little is known of their effects on the ability of inoculant rhizobia to survive after addition to the plant rhizosphere. Laboratory and environmental growth chamber studies were performed to determine the influence of finely milled peat, granular peat, or vermiculite carriers on survival of B. japonicum An-6a (rifampicin- and streptomycin-resistant) in samples of three Louisiana soils. Laboratory studies showed that the numbers of viable cells recovered from …
