Development And Field Applications Of Shaly Sand Petrophysical Models., Milton Noel Lau Jan 1989

Development And Field Applications Of Shaly Sand Petrophysical Models., Milton Noel Lau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new, theoretically derived model expressing shaly sand conductivity is presented. The proposed model is based on dual water and cation exchange capacity concepts. The new model is based on the Waxman and Smits concept of supplementing the water conductivity with a clay counterions conductivity. The model also utilizes the dual water theory, which relates each conductivity term to a particular type of water, each occupying a specific volume of the total pore space. The proposed model, however, assumes that the counterion conductivity can be represented by a hypothetical electrolyte. The properties of this electrolyte were derived from electrochemical and …

Pro Bono Publico: New Orleans Politics And Municipal Reform In The Progressive Era, 1912-1926. (Volumes I And Ii)., Terrence Walter Fitzmorris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Social prejudice and moral consideration did not form the basis of city politics and municipal reform in New Orleans during the Progressive Era. The Regular Democratic Organization, the so-called political machine and the civic reformers of New Orleans were more concerned with issues of expanding and centralized municipal authority, regulation of private and public corporations, completion and expansion of public services, "living wages" and decent working conditions for organized labor, equitable taxation and assessment rates for property holders, and city planning and development. Admittedly, the principal leadership of the municipal reform movement came from the "upper crust" of New Orleans …

The amounts and profile distribution of various sulfur forms in Louisiana coastal marshes were investigated to understand sulfur cycling as related to the origin and type of tidal wetland marshes. Sampling was conducted quarterly from a Panicum hemitomon freshwater marsh, a Spartina patens brackish marsh, and a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh in Barataria Basin, Louisiana. Soil samples were fractionated into acid-volatile sulfides (AVS), elemental sulfur, HCl-soluble sulfur, pyrite sulfur, ester-sulfate sulfur, carbon-bonded sulfur, and total sulfur. Seasonal changes showed a greater effect on the distribution of S fractions in brackish and salt marsh than in the freshwater marsh. Season appeared …

Characterization Of The Transcriptional Properties Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus., Siyamak Rasty Jan 1989

Characterization Of The Transcriptional Properties Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus., Siyamak Rasty

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The transcriptional properties of equine infectious anemia virus were examined in two distinct equine cell lines in which the virus establishes either a persistent or a cytopathic infection. Northern hybridization analyses were performed to determine the number, sizes, and relative levels of the EIAV transcripts encoded during persistent or cytopathic infections. Three species of viral mRNA were detected in infected cells: an 8.2-kb full-length genomic mRNA, a 3.5-kb single-spliced mRNA, and a low abundance 1.5-kb mRNA, presumably formed by a double-splicing event of the full-length mRNA. Analysis of the levels of EIAV-specific RNA's present during persistent and cytopathic infections has …

Behavior Of The American Alligator In A Louisiana Freshwater Marsh., William Lee Rootes Jan 1989

Behavior Of The American Alligator In A Louisiana Freshwater Marsh., William Lee Rootes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stomachs from 706 alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) harvested from a southern Louisiana fresh marsh in 1987 and 1988 were examined for web tags from smaller marked alligators. Alligators $$2.73 m TL) were significantly more cannibalistic than smaller alligators (P $<$ 0.0001). Males and females were cannibalized in the same proportion they occurred in the population. Cannibalism mortality appeared to be distributed proportionately among all cohorts in the 0.35-2.12 m TL size classes resulting in a relatively uniform reduction across the group. Cannibalism was found to be an important population regulating mechanism, accounting for an estimated 50.2% of total hatchling mortality and 70.1% of total mortality in age 11 months and older alligators. Male growth rates in both a palustrine marsh (Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge) and estuarine marsh (Rockefeller Refuge) marsh types were greater than female rates (P $<$ 0.0001). Growth rates and weight-length ratios of alligators in estuarine marsh were greater than those of alligators in palustrine marsh (P $<$ 0.0001). Age specific fecundity and survivorship rates of alligators in the palustrine marsh were less than alligators in the estuarine marsh. The home range size and activity pattern of adult female alligators of different reproductive status were compared among seasons of the year. Home range size (P = 0.54) and minimum average daily movement rates (P = 0.85) did not differ between nesting and non-nesting radio-collared females during the summer nesting season. No difference was found between females with and without broods in the two variables during the fall brooding season. Adult radio-collared female alligators ranged over larger areas and had greater daily average daily movement rates during the spring breeding season than during any other season of the year (P $<$ 0.01). Annual home range size of the 15 adult female alligators monitored during the study was 36.2 $\pm$ 42.6 (SD) ha.

The Synthesis Of Constrained And Benzannulated Derivatives Of The Essential Amino Acids Tyrosine And Tryptophan., Marco A. Vela Jan 1989

The Synthesis Of Constrained And Benzannulated Derivatives Of The Essential Amino Acids Tyrosine And Tryptophan., Marco A. Vela

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Benzannulated and a series of constrained derivatives of the essential amino acids tyrosine and tryptophan were synthesized. The synthesis of the two benzannulated tyrosine analogs followed traditional synthetic protocols that basically consisted of obtaining key oxazolones and further elaboration to the target amino acids; the latter compounds were obtained as racemic mixtures. All the reaction intermediates were fully characterized spectroscopically, and when possible, structure proof was established by X-ray crystallographic determinations. Asymmetric hydrogenation studies on the intermediate (Z)-2-benzoylaminoacrylic acids were undertaken in an effort to obtain enantiomerically pure materials. The products were, in fact, chiral upon hydrogenation in the presence …

Model-Based Three-Dimensional Object Recognition And Localization Using Properties Of Surface Curvatures., Wu Wang Jan 1989

Model-Based Three-Dimensional Object Recognition And Localization Using Properties Of Surface Curvatures., Wu Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ability to recognize three-dimensional (3-D) objects accurately from range images is a fundamental goal of vision in robotics. This facility is important in automated manufacturing environments in industry. In contrast to the extensive work done in computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), the robotic process is primitive and ad hoc. This thesis defines and investigates a fundamental problem in robot vision systems: recognizing and localizing multiple free-form 3-D objects in range images. An effective and efficient approach is developed and implemented as a system Free-form Object Recognition and Localization (FORL). The technique used for surface characterization is surface curvatures derived …

Analytical Studies Of Wireline Formation Testing And Pressure Losses Across Gravel Packs., Turhan Yildiz Jan 1989

Analytical Studies Of Wireline Formation Testing And Pressure Losses Across Gravel Packs., Turhan Yildiz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A three-dimensional (3-D) analytical model was developed to improve the analyses of the transient pressure response of a reservoir to wireline formation testing (WFT). Available analysis techniques of the WFT oversimplify the flow geometry by assuming either a radial or a spherical flow pattern. The proposed model simulates the exact flow geometry of the WFT flow pattern. The model was derived by solving the 3-D diffusivity equation coupled with the boundary conditions prevailing during the test. The Laplace transformation and the separation of variables were used to obtain the solution. The solution is expressed in terms of the infinite Fourier-Bessel …

Changes In Lipid Composition Of Gulf Coast Marine Species As Influenced By Processing And Storage Treatments., Rafida Idris Jan 1989

Changes In Lipid Composition Of Gulf Coast Marine Species As Influenced By Processing And Storage Treatments., Rafida Idris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The lipid composition, and changes to lipid components of several marine finfish due to frozen storage, canning and use of various physical and chemical treatments during storage were evaluated. In Phase I, and lipid content of mullet (Mugil cephalus), croaker (Micropogon undulatus), redfish (Sciaenops ocllata) and red snapper (Lutiganus campechanus) fillets obtained from a local supermarket, was approximately 5% with phospholipids representing $<$5% of the total lipid. Vitamin A was not detectable but vitamin E was found in mullet. Mullet had a higher degree of oxidation compared to other species. In Phase II, fresh mullet were wrapped in oxygen impermeable freezer paper or vacuum packaged and frozen at $-$20$\sp\circ$C, or were thermally processed. After 90 days of frozen storage, a second batch of mullet was thermally processed. Total lipid, phospholipid, vitamins A and E and oxidation were determined at 0, 90, 180 and 360 days of storage. TBA number increased by 9.42mg/1000 g after 360 days of frozen storage. Oxidation did not occur in canned fish. Fish canned at 90 days evidenced greater oxidation after canning but further oxidation during storage did not occur. Vacuum packaging inhibited oxidation to a significant degree. Phospholipid decreased in frozen fish to the greatest degree, followed by vacuum packaged samples. Loss of phospholipid in freshly canned mullet was small. In frozen canned mullet, the change was greater. Vitamin E level decreased during frozen storage from 0.69 mg/100 g to a trace amount and the loss was 38% as a result of canning. In Phase III a comparative effect of prefreezing dip treatment, use of antioxidants in the dip and oxygen limitation by vacuum packaging on the lipid composition of frozen stored blackdrum (Pogonius cromis) was studied. Analyses were made at 2 week interval during a 12 week storage period. Total lipid averaged 4% in all treatment samples and phospholipid was $<$5% of total lipids. The effectivness for the inhibition of oxidation in frozen blackdrum was 0.025% TBHQ (tert-butylhydroquinone) $>$ 1% and 0.5% $\alpha$-tocopherol $>$ water dip $>$ vacuum pack $>$ no dip treatment. Vitamin A was quantifiable but not Vitamin E. No significant change in Vitamin A content was observed in any …

Toward An Eschatological Curriculum Theory., George Patrick Slattery Jr Jan 1989

Toward An Eschatological Curriculum Theory., George Patrick Slattery Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the relationship between eschatology and curriculum theory. Themes such as liberation, emancipatory knowledge, transformative pedagogy, concepts of time, impact of the future on present experience, and learning landscapes are traced in the emerging literature of theology and of curriculum theory. The mutual interest in these themes in both fields of study provides the basis for moving toward an eschatological curriculum theory. The reconceptualization which has occurred in curriculum theory and the new emphasis on eschatology in twentieth century theology both provide a foundation for this curriculum theory rooted in hope. In contemporary theology there is a movement …

Symphony No. 1. (Original Composition);, Mickie Denver Willis Jan 1989

Symphony No. 1. (Original Composition);, Mickie Denver Willis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal in composing this Symphony was to produce a large scale work which would have the power, impact, and audience appeal of a late Romantic orchestral work but which employed some twentieth-century techniques. The effort was to produce a composition which would not only display accomplished compositional craft but, upon performance, would generate immediate audience enthusiasm. A great deal of idiomatic diversity was used in the piece to produce a broad and varied sound experience. In much the same way that a film score is composed, this piece was crafted using whatever tonal, orchestral, or stylistic treatment would produce …
