Overestimation Of Basis Set Superposition Error In Molecular Dimer Correlation Potential Energy Calculations., Jia-An Yang
Overestimation Of Basis Set Superposition Error In Molecular Dimer Correlation Potential Energy Calculations., Jia-An Yang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It is important to remove the basis set superposition error (BSSE) from the intermolecular potential energy calculations with the counterpoise (CP) correction especially for weak intermolecular interactions. However, it has been still questioned whether the counterpoise (CP) correction overestimates the real BSSE. To answer this question is the purpose of this research. In this study, the overestimation of basis set superposition error (BSSE) by the counterpoise (CP) method has been analyzed by an approach called "localized orbital pair correlation". This approach is able to eliminate the overestimation of basis set superposition error (BSSE) for the second order potential energies. Prototype …
Arch: A Robust Construction Heuristic For The Layout Design Of Food Processing Facilities., George Robert Baskin
Arch: A Robust Construction Heuristic For The Layout Design Of Food Processing Facilities., George Robert Baskin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A Robust Construction Heuristic (ARCH) represents the first attempt to develop a facilities layout design algorithm tailored to the particular solution of the food processing facility layout problem where a fluctuating product mix due to seasonality or changes in consumer demand is typical. The foundation literature for this research comes predominantly from the industrial engineering, management science, and food science fields. Construction heuristics built layouts from scratch and provided poor quality results. Robustness algorithms had no simplifying heuristics but were reported to yield potentially higher quality layouts than traditional algorithms for layout problems with fluctuating product mixes. ARCH was developed …
The Structural And Functional Roles Of Critical Amino Acid Residues In Drosophila Alcohol Dehydrogenase., Zhuo Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH, alcohol:NAD oxidoreductase, EC1.1.1.1) from Drosophila melanogaster (DmADH) is unique among alcohol dehydrogenases in metal ion requirement, substrate preference, and stereospecificity of hydride transfer. In order to study this unique enzyme, the first part of this dissertation reports the construction and expression of DmADH cDNA in E. coli hosts. The second part of the dissertation shows the structural function of glycine-14 in putative NAD-binding domain of DmADH. The comparison of DmADH to horse liver ADH suggests that glycine-14 in DmADH is located at the first position of a "conserved sequence" which maintains the tight turn structure positioned in …

This dissertation is a study of Robert Floyd Kennon, reform governor of Louisiana, from 1952-1956. Kennon was born on August 21, 1902, near Minden, Louisiana. He received his bachelor's degrees from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in Liberal Arts and Law in 1923 and 1925, respectively. In 1925, he began the practice of law in Minden, and was elected as mayor of the town at age twenty-three. Five years later, he sought and won, the office of District Attorney, for the Twenty-Sixth Judicial District, a position he held for ten years. He was a staff officer in Europe during …
Marsh:Water Column Interactions In Two Louisiana Estuaries. Flux Measurements And Conceptual Implications., Daniel Louis Childers
Marsh:Water Column Interactions In Two Louisiana Estuaries. Flux Measurements And Conceptual Implications., Daniel Louis Childers
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many important ecosystem-level processes are integrated in hydrologically-forced marsh:water column interactions in estuaries. In this work, I quantified nutrient and sediment fluxes in two Louisiana estuaries using throughflow marsh flumes. The Barataria Basin estuary is in an later, deteriorating stage of the deltaic cycle. Brackish and saline marshes here exported dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), total nitrogen, and dissolved organics (DOM); phosphorus fluxes were low and variable. Fourleague Bay marshes, in a earlier developmental stage of the deltaic cycle, imported DIN in the spring and released DIN in summer and fall. In this way, marshes here buffer open-bay N concentrations from …
Stratigraphy And Sedimentology Of Holocene Overbank Deposits Of The Mississippi River, False River Region, Louisiana., Kathleen Marie Farrell
Stratigraphy And Sedimentology Of Holocene Overbank Deposits Of The Mississippi River, False River Region, Louisiana., Kathleen Marie Farrell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Holocene flood basin along a meander belt margin of the Mississippi River includes two principal geomorphic features: a flat featureless natural levee, and a system of anastomozed, entrenched crevasses with intervening splay lobes. Levee and splay lobe deposits are identical and consist of thinly (cm) to minutely (mm) rhythmically layered sand, silt and clay which are pervasively disrupted by unlined meniscate burrows of the trace fossil, Muensteria. Pelletal fabrics develop where overlapping backfilled burrows completely obliterate primary stratification so that only traces of small ripple laminations and parallel laminations are preserved. Pelletal silt is the most extensive lithology present. …
Toward The Inclusion Of Environmental Factors In The Concept And Measure Of National Income., George Edward Foy Jr
Toward The Inclusion Of Environmental Factors In The Concept And Measure Of National Income., George Edward Foy Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation uses Sir John Hicks' concept of income as a guide to integrate environmental factors into the concept and measure of national income. Chapter 1 introduces Hicks' concept of income as the maximum amount which one can consume in a given period and still be as well off at the end of the period as he was at the beginning. This basic idea of sustainability requires accounting for the net depletion of all capital consumed in current production. Chapter 2 documents recent trends in natural resource use to demonstrate that exclusion of the depreciation of environmental capital from NNP …
An Experiment To Study The Effects Of Changing Format And Scaling Characteristics Of Financial Statement Data., Paul Michael Goldwater
An Experiment To Study The Effects Of Changing Format And Scaling Characteristics Of Financial Statement Data., Paul Michael Goldwater
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Current financial statements present single numbers, the result of a measurement process embracing many estimates and arbitrary classifications, summarizations, judgments, and allocations. These point-estimates and the ensuing uncertainty for decisionmakers has been cause for concern to both academics and practitioners, evoking various recommendations to change the format and scaling of financial statement data. The most significant acknowledgment of this problem came from the Financial Accounting Standards Board in 1978, when it released Objectives of Financial Reporting by Business Enterprises (SFAC No. 1). The primary interest of this research was to study the impact on decisionmaking about prospective cash flows by …
Barotropic Shelf Circulation Forced By An Isolated Oceanic Disturbance., Xinyu He
Barotropic Shelf Circulation Forced By An Isolated Oceanic Disturbance., Xinyu He
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A 'slowly varying' and 'isolated' oceanic disturbance may locally drive the shelf circulation. This situation is analytically studied using a linear, steady-state, barotropic model. The solution has a dipolar structure over the shelf. This is consistent with an integral theorem of zero net relative angular momentum on the f-plane with a sloping topography, derived herein. It is found that the forced circulation patterns are controlled by the alongshore scale of the disturbance, magnitude of bottom stress, and geometry of the shelf. In particular, by generating significant relative vorticity due to the ageostrophic motion, the friction strongly influences the center position, …
Factors Affecting Trace Metal Mobility In Subsoils., Janice Kotuby-Amacher
Factors Affecting Trace Metal Mobility In Subsoils., Janice Kotuby-Amacher
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The transport of metals to groundwater below hazardous waste sites is of great environmental concern. The movement of a particular metal is determined by (1) the soil's chemical and physical properties, (2) the amount and form of the metal, and (3) the composition of the soil or waste solution with which the metal is associated. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to examine these factors affecting metal mobility in subsoils. The objectives of the field studies were to determine the distribution and chemical forms of metal contaminants in subsoil at sites with known or suspected potential for groundwater contamination. The …
The Impact Of Options Listing On The Information Content Of Annual Earnings Announcement., Tinwah Richard Lau
The Impact Of Options Listing On The Information Content Of Annual Earnings Announcement., Tinwah Richard Lau
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to determine whether options listing induces additional information acquisition and processing and hence causes a commensurate reduction in the information content of annual earnings announcements. The U-statistic is used to measure the information content of annual earnings announcements. The dissertation tests the options listing effects on four different designs: (i) all exchange (NYSE/AMEX) firms, (ii) large exchange firms versus small exchange firms, (iii) positive unexpected earnings firms versus negative unexpected earnings firms, and (iv) all over-the-counter firms. The research found that, after options listing, the U-statistic of the exchange firms decreases significantly during the …
Induction Of Polyploidy In Ictalurid Catfish And Comparative Performance Of Diploid And Triploid Channel Catfish And Channel X Blue Catfish Hybrids., Craig Gustaf Lilyestrom
Induction Of Polyploidy In Ictalurid Catfish And Comparative Performance Of Diploid And Triploid Channel Catfish And Channel X Blue Catfish Hybrids., Craig Gustaf Lilyestrom
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study provided indications of the feasibility of inducing polyploidy in ictalurids (channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and hybrids with blue catfish, I. furcatus) by temperature or hydrostatic pressure shocks as well as the potential for improvement of growth and processing traits in triploid channel catfish x blue catfish hybrids. One-cell embryos of ictalurid catfish were subjected to either temperature or hydrostatic pressure shocks for induction of triploidy or tetraploidy. Hatch rates of embryos treated for induction of tetraploidy with hydrostatic pressure shocks were lower than those treated for induction of tetraploidy with heat shocks. Hatch rates of embryos tested for …
Gongora's "Soledades" As A Problem Of Language And Meaning In Seventeenth Century Spain., Ted Eustace Mcvay Jr
Gongora's "Soledades" As A Problem Of Language And Meaning In Seventeenth Century Spain., Ted Eustace Mcvay Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The exploration of the epistemological assumptions necessary for the interpretation of Luis de Gongora's "Soledades" is an area of critical attention that has gone virtually neglected since his 1927 "rehabilitation." This study offers an approach to understanding the long, difficult poem and the bitter critical reaction against it in the context of the seventeenth-century shift of predominant epistemologies discussed by Michel Foucault in The Order of Things. An approach that focuses on how the world is known is most appropriate to a study of the "Soledades" for several reasons, one being that those writers who attacked the poem did so …
Modeling Flat Flames Burning Chlorinated Methanes In A Methane/Air Environment., Gary Peyton Miller
Modeling Flat Flames Burning Chlorinated Methanes In A Methane/Air Environment., Gary Peyton Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A numerical model was developed to simulate flat flames burning chlorinated methanes in a methane/air environment. The model uses a reaction mechanism containing 341 reactions and 58 species. A time-stepping solution with linearized source terms and a strict convergence criteria had to be developed to allow for convergence of the conservation equations. Simulations of ten flames were made, five simulations of dichloromethane/methane/air flames, and five simulations of carbon tetrachloride/methane/air flames. For each fuel type, simulations were performed at a constant molar Cl/H ratio of 0.3 for a stoichiometric flame, a fuel-rich flame, and a fuel-lean flame. The other simulations were …
An Examination Of The Effect Of Financial Risk On The Manager's Choice Of Accounting Methods., Linda Marie Nichols
An Examination Of The Effect Of Financial Risk On The Manager's Choice Of Accounting Methods., Linda Marie Nichols
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the effect of the firm's level of financial risk on management's preference for full-cost or successful-efforts accounting in the oil and gas industry. Agency theory predicts that firms with increasing levels of financial risk have an incentive to switch to an accounting method which tends to increase net tangible assets and which creates more stable earnings in order to avoid technical default on loan covenants. Therefore, it is expected that successful-efforts firms with increasing levels of financial risk will tend to switch to use the full-cost accounting method. Past studies have used leverage as a surrogate for …
Floral Ontogeny Of Mimosoid Legumes., Jose Israel Ramirez-Domenech
Floral Ontogeny Of Mimosoid Legumes., Jose Israel Ramirez-Domenech
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Comparative floral ontogeny in mimosoid legumes was analyzed among representative genera in three major tribes Mimoseae, Acacieae and Ingeae. Details on floral and inflorescence ontogeny in one mimosoid species is described and illustrated for Mimosa strigillosa Torr. & Gray. Three features studied developmentally include: variation in number of parts, patterns of arrangement and inflorescence architecture. Suppression occurs along inflorescences that develop synchronously, when basal flowers are retarded. Tetramerous flowers are considered a reduction or suppression from basic pentamerous flower. Divergent patterns in order of sepal initiation and stamen initiation and proliferation are found during early ontogeny. Four patterns found in …

Systolic Array Implementations With Reduced Compute Time., Abdulkader Omar Barbir
Systolic Array Implementations With Reduced Compute Time., Abdulkader Omar Barbir
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of the research is the establishment of a formal methodology to develop computational structures more suitable for the changing nature of real-time signal processing and control applications. A major effort is devoted to the following question: Given a systolic array designed to execute a particular algorithm, what other algorithms can be executed on the same array? One approach for answering this question is based on a general model of array operations using graph-theoretic techniques. As a result, a systematic procedure is introduced that models array operations as a function of the compute cycle. As a consequence of the …
Habitat Differentiation Of Iris Fulva Ker Gawler, Iris Hexagona Walter, And Their Hybrids., Bobby Dale Bennett
Habitat Differentiation Of Iris Fulva Ker Gawler, Iris Hexagona Walter, And Their Hybrids., Bobby Dale Bennett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Iris fulva and Iris hexagona have overlapping geographic ranges in Louisiana; in areas of overlap hybrids are fairly common. Iris hexagona occupies the borders of freshwater marshes of southern Louisiana while I. fulva can be found farther north along edges of natural levees, canals and swamps. An area of hybridization (hybrid zone) can be found where bayous penetrate the freshwater marsh. The objective of this research was to investigate some of the factors affecting habitat differentiation of I. fulva, I. hexagona, and their natural hybrids ("Hybrid Purple" and "Hybrid Red"). A three year field study was conducted to determine the …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Rhodobacter Capsulatus Biob Mutant Using A Novel Method To Screen For Strains Unable To Synthesize Heme., Rhonda Diane Cardin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The common tetrapyrrole pathway of the photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter capsulatus, ultimately leads to the synthesis of bacteriochlorophyll, heme, vitamin B-12, and siroheme. Molecular analysis of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis has been limited due to a lack of mutants. This study describes the isolation and characterization of a biotin-requiring mutant of R. capsulatus unable to synthesize heme. Growth conditions were established to allow selection and characterization of heme-deficient strains of R. capsulatus. A screening method was developed to isolate strains of R. capsulatus unable to synthesize heme. Tn5 derivatives of a bchB strain that exhibited an altered ability to synthesize the fluorescent porphyrin …

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Characterization Of Bis(Ethylenedithio)Tetrathiafulvalene, Tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene And Their Perchlorate Salts., Roberto Luzon Wong
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Electroanalytical methods (cyclic voltammetry (CV), rotating disk electrode (RDE) and rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) voltammetry) have been used to characterize the oxidation products of bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF or ET) and tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene (TMTSF) in two commonly used solvents, acetonitrile (CH$\sb3$CN) and 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCE). Cyclic voltammetry has revealed that the electro-oxidations of ET and TMTSF each occur initially via two one-electron steps representing the formation of the monocation radical and dication species. The electrochemical behaviors of TMTSF and ET in both solvents are summarized. UV/VIS spectroscopy was used to characterize TMTSF, ET and their perchlorate salts in solution. Solution spectra of TMTSF, …
Use Of Infrared Piezobirefringence For Observation Of Dislocations In Semiconductors With Cubic Symmetry., Aloke Kumar Dutta
Use Of Infrared Piezobirefringence For Observation Of Dislocations In Semiconductors With Cubic Symmetry., Aloke Kumar Dutta
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The use of infrared piezobirefringence for characterization of defects in cubic semiconductor materials is investigated in this work. Under stress, these normally isotropic materials become birefringent. The stress can result from an applied external load or from defects present in the material. Defects can be generated in the material during its growth and/or processing. As a first step towards defect characterization, the case of diametrically loaded discs of semiconductor materials was simulated. This was done to obtain a better understanding of the simulation algorithm prior to its subsequent use in dislocation characterization. A dark-field plane polariscope was constructed using a …
Non-Newtonian Fluid Flow In Eccentric Annuli And Its Application To Petroleum Engineering Problems., Mustafa Haciislamoglu
Non-Newtonian Fluid Flow In Eccentric Annuli And Its Application To Petroleum Engineering Problems., Mustafa Haciislamoglu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The fluid flow in the annular gap in oilwells is a complex problem. The geometry of the annulus is customarily simplified to concentric annular flow. In this study, a fluid flow model is developed allowing annulus to be eccentric: inner pipe located anywhere in the annulus. Thus, a more realistic representation of the actual geometry is obtained. An equation of motion that defines flow of non-Newtonian fluids in eccentric annuli is derived. A numerical solution of this equation is presented. The velocity profiles, the viscosity profiles, and the flow rate vs frictional pressure loss gradient relationship are calculated for varying …

Harmonic Measurement And Reduction In Power Systems., Rutisurhata Kurniawan Hartana
Harmonic Measurement And Reduction In Power Systems., Rutisurhata Kurniawan Hartana
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Harmonic voltages and currents are created by nonlinear loads in power systems. These harmonics can cause serious problems to the energy suppliers (utility companies) and energy users (consumers). This dissertation presents new techniques for harmonic measurement and the accompanying problem, harmonic reduction. To reduce harmonics, the location and magnitude of harmonic sources must be known a priori. However, to measure and monitor harmonic sources requires specialized instrumentation that is not generally permanently installed at most buses. In this study, a method is developed to use neural networks in conjunction with state estimation for monitoring and estimating harmonic sources with only …
Theoretical And Numerical Models For Heat And Mass Transport And Groundwater Flow Near Salt Domes., David Griffin Evans
Theoretical And Numerical Models For Heat And Mass Transport And Groundwater Flow Near Salt Domes., David Griffin Evans
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Groundwater near salt domes is an inherently complex hydrogeologic system because groundwater is subject to large lateral gradients in salinity and temperature. Moreover, groundwater flow is indirectly coupled to salt tectonics because diapirism alters the salinity and thermal conditions as a sedimentary basin evolves. In order to study this complex environment, mathematical and numerical models are developed which explicitly couple heat and dissolved salt transport to groundwater flow, and account for basin subsidence and salt diapirism. The groundwater flow field is described using a mass stream function which does not require the Boussinseq assumption. The numerical model uses a control …
