Biology And Control Of Strawberry Anthracnose Crown Rot And Fungicidal Control Of Strawberry Fruit Rots., Thomas Bond Mcinnes
Biology And Control Of Strawberry Anthracnose Crown Rot And Fungicidal Control Of Strawberry Fruit Rots., Thomas Bond Mcinnes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Surveys of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) summer nursery beds and production fields in Louisiana from 1986-1989 indicated that anthracnose crown rot (ACR) incited by Colletotrichum fragariae Brooks limited both plant and fruit production on most farms. Pathogen-free production plants were provided to growers in the strawberry growing region of southeast Louisiana for establishment of summer nursery beds. The pathogen-free strawberry plants remained free of ACR in summer nursery beds separated from beds with locally grown transplants. Infield spread of ACR was rapid in summer nursery beds, but there was no evidence of disease spread in production fields. To assay …
L(P) Regularity And Extrapolation., Michael Helmuth Ruge
L(P) Regularity And Extrapolation., Michael Helmuth Ruge
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of this thesis was to isolate classes of bounded linear operators in $L\sb{p}(I)$ which on the one hand still have some of the well-known and useful properties of positive operators, but which on the other hand are large enough to include some important classes of operators (e.g. the Hilbert transform and the singular operators derived from it) that cannot be dominated by positive operators. In Chapter I, we study as a first class of this kind the $L\sb{p}$ regular operators. By definition such operators map equiintegrable sets in $L\sb{p}(I)$ into equiintegrable sets in $L\sb{p}(I)$ and sets compact in …
The Study Of Model Hamiltonians On Finite Clusters., Duan Pin Chen
The Study Of Model Hamiltonians On Finite Clusters., Duan Pin Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We present two methods to study model Hamiltonians defined on clusters. One is the symmetrization of the Hilbert space basis according to irreducible representations of the symmetry group of the Hamiltonian. The other one adapts the Lanczos diagonalization method directly to the second quantized form of the Hamiltonian studied. By the symmetrization of the basis, one takes advantage of the symmetries of the Hamiltonian, and uses the group theory to find the invariant subspaces of the Hamiltonian in the complete Hilbert space. Then one needs only to work within the invariant subspaces. This method cuts down substantially the size of …
The Affective Variant Hypothesis: How Is Bulimia Nervosa Related To Depression?, Rita C. Prather
The Affective Variant Hypothesis: How Is Bulimia Nervosa Related To Depression?, Rita C. Prather
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bulimia nervosa patients frequently score from mild to severe on measures of depressive symptoms. This association between bulimia nervosa and depression led some researchers to hypothesize that bulimia nervosa is a variant of the affective disorder of depression. The main purpose of this study was to provide further evaluation of the affective variant hypothesis of bulimia nervosa. It was postulated that bulimia nervosa patients with and without depression would differ from each other and from depressives without eating disorders on specific measures of cognitive, behavioral, and somatic symptoms associated with depression. Secondly, it was hypothesized that the nondepressed and depressed …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novencinctus linn.) is highly susceptible to infection with M. leprae and has become an important animal model in the study of leprosy. In an attempt to define the major immunogens of M. leprae and the isotypic antibody response to these molecules during infection, the IgG and IgM antibody responses of experimentally-infected armadillos to the sonicated M. leprae, supernatant fraction of sonicated M. leprae, lipoarabinomannan derived from M. tuberculosis, and phenolic glycoliopid-I was analyzed using immunoblot and ELISA. Antibodies to the specific epitope (defined by monoclonal antibody IIIE9) on the 65-kDa protein of M. leprae were analyzed …
Modernism's Illegitimate Progeny: Fictions Of Crime And The Experience Of Modernity., Jon Francis Thompson
Modernism's Illegitimate Progeny: Fictions Of Crime And The Experience Of Modernity., Jon Francis Thompson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation has two main concerns. The first is to see fictions of crime--a general term which I use to signify those genres concerned with crime, including detective fiction, spy thrillers, and crime fiction proper--as attempts to mediate and contain the anxieties brought about by the experience of modernity. Modernity is theorized as having three primary moments: the nineteenth, early twentieth-century experience of imperialism; the post World War I period, the high water mark of urban capitalism; and the post World War II period, which I theorize as postmodernism. I attempt to situate crime fiction within these social contexts, and …

Multichannel deep seismic reflection data across a passive continental margin in the northern Gulf of Mexico have been acquired, processed, and interpreted together with three-dimensional gravity modeling. The central Gulf basin is structurally asymmetric from north and south. The northern Gulf is underlain by a 8 to 16 km thickness of sedimentary rocks, significantly greater than the southern Gulf. The top of continental crust occurs at a depth of about 8 km beneath the upper Mississippi-Alabama continental shelf and is characterized by horst and graben structures. The top of oceanic crust occurs at a depth of about 12 km below …
Natural Convection Above Heated Inclined Surfaces., John Anthony King
Natural Convection Above Heated Inclined Surfaces., John Anthony King
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Motivated by a need to assess pollutant transport by upslope flows, an investigation has been conducted into the fundamentals of natural convection flow over inclined surfaces. Particular attention was focused on the influence of ambient fluid stability. Field studies were performed using tracer gas releases into the upslope flow over a Southern California mountain range. The field studies served to reveal the presence of a split slope flow recirculation and demonstrated the impact of this recirculation on the transport of pollutants from a valley. In order to pursue a controlled investigation of the phenomena found in the field work, a …
Geomorphic And Stratigraphic Evolution Of The Middle Amite River Valley, Southeastern Louisiana., Whitney Joseph Autin
Geomorphic And Stratigraphic Evolution Of The Middle Amite River Valley, Southeastern Louisiana., Whitney Joseph Autin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many streams of the northern Gulf of Mexico coastal plain have similar geomorphic and stratigraphic character and comparable influences on their drainage basin evolution. Potential geomorphic influences on floodplain morphology vary temporally and spatially in their effect and include inherent geomorphic processes, eustatic sea level rise, evolution of a stream's receiving basin, adjustment to active tectonics, and local climate fluctuation. A 14.3-km segment of meander belt in the middle Amite River valley in southeastern Louisiana was selected to test the relative effect of geomorphic factors on Holocene floodplain evolution. Floodplain evolution in this valley responded to sea level rise and …

This dissertation describes studies on three Trypanosoma cruzi isolates from Louisiana mammals with particular reference to infectivity to dogs. Isolates from an opossum (Tc-O) and armadillo (Tc-A) were obtained during a blood culture survey of these animal populations in Louisiana. Prevalence of T. cruzi were 37.5% and 1% in opossums and armadillos respectively. Further, 48% opossums had myocarditis suggestive of T. cruzi infection. Rural dogs with known contact with T. cruzi hosts, housed rural dogs, urban animal shelter dogs and household pets showed 4.7, 0, 2.3 and 0% serological prevalence to T. cruzi respectively. Tc-O and Tc-A (wild isolates) displayed …
The Interaction Of Accountants' Involvement And Basis Of Accounting On Loan Officers' Judgment When Evaluating A Loan To A Small Business., Joe Gregory Bushong
The Interaction Of Accountants' Involvement And Basis Of Accounting On Loan Officers' Judgment When Evaluating A Loan To A Small Business., Joe Gregory Bushong
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Small/private business is an important sector of the economy of the United States; however, the needs of small business are often overlooked when accounting standards are established. This has led to concerns that small businesses are required to report financial information that is not needed by the users of their financial statements, and that they are precluded from reporting information that may be more useful. The purpose of this study was to determine whether loan decisions made using financial statements prepared on a modified basis of accounting affected decisions made by bank loan officers, the primary external users of small …

The index of refraction of soot particles is of considerable importance in many areas of research and engineering applications such as combustion diagnostics and radiative transfer from combustion systems. The present study aims toward the analysis of compositional effect on the refractive index and the spectral variation of the indices of soot particles by combining classical and dynamic light scattering measurements with the Kramers-Kronig relations in hydrocarbon flames. The particle size distribution is determined from photon correlation measurements. The number densities, volume fractions and refractive indices are then determined as a function of the height above the burner and fuel …
A Training Intervention For Control Of Sba Loan Defaults: A Theory Development Approach., J. Dennis Coates
A Training Intervention For Control Of Sba Loan Defaults: A Theory Development Approach., J. Dennis Coates
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Since the energy-crisis days of the early 1970's, the United States' economy has been gradually moving from reliance on manufacturing operations to a reliance on service industries. This shift has lead to an abundance of opportunities in the area of small business development. In response to these opportunities, the small business sector has undergone substantial growth. One problem associated with this growth is the procurement of financing for small business startups. Since most entrepreneurs do not have the financing options available to large corporations, the majority of small business startups involve owner bank borrowing, often with the assistance of the …

The Dismantling Of De Jure Segregation In Louisiana, 1954-1974. (Volumes I And Ii)., Carroll Joseph Dugas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the two decades between 1954 and 1974, the State of Louisiana progressed from a closed, white-dominated society to an open, multi-racial society with legal safeguards in place to assure equal protection and equal opportunity for all residents regardless of race or color. Prior to 1960, the vast majority of blacks were unable to vote, serve on juries, buy homes in decent neighborhoods, use publicly-owned facilities or frequent hotels, restaurants and other public accommodations. In addition to these humiliations, they were required to utilize inadequate "separate but equal" public parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, schools, waiting areas and correctional facilities until …
Interpretation Of Solid State Deuterium Nmr Spectroscopic Parameters., Kermin Guo
Interpretation Of Solid State Deuterium Nmr Spectroscopic Parameters., Kermin Guo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Solid-state deuterium NMR spectroscopic parameters including the deuterium quadrupole coupling constant and asymmetry parameter are interpreted in both theoretical and experimental aspects. Ab initio molecular orbital calculations were performed on the alkali metal hydrides, toluene, thymine, acetic acid dimer, and phenylacetic acid molecules with different conformations. In the alkali metal hydrides, the electric field gradient at the hydrogen atom site was calculated in three model systems: terminal metal hydride, bridging metal hydride, and dihydrogen adducts. The effect of metal hydride geometry on the deuterium quadrupole coupling constant was examined. The results can be used in the assignment and interpretation of …
The Anthems Of Thomas Ford (Ca. 1580-1648)., Fang-Lan Lin Hsieh
The Anthems Of Thomas Ford (Ca. 1580-1648)., Fang-Lan Lin Hsieh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The twenty anthems of Thomas Ford which are kept in Oxford, Christ Church Library (Mss. 56-60 and Mss. 736-738), provide the primary material for the present study. Fourteen of those pieces are full anthems written for three-voice chorus of contratenor, tenor, and bassus. Four three-voice verse anthems are incomplete because of missing instrumental parts, and the two six-voice anthems (one is a verse anthem, the other one is full anthem) are also missing bassus parts. Ford's brief biography and a survey of his works, found in Chapter I, provide a context for the study of his anthems. Chapter II contains …
Development Of A Karplus-Type Relationship For Solid State Deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy., Margaret Alice Callaghan Jackisch
Development Of A Karplus-Type Relationship For Solid State Deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy., Margaret Alice Callaghan Jackisch
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is the first application of a Karplus-type relationship to solid-state deuterium NMR spectroscopy. In particular zero-field high-resolution deuterium adiabatic demagnetization in the laboratory frame (ADLF) spectroscopy has been used to distinguish between two inequivalent deuterium positions in alpha substituted arylacetic acids. High resolution spectra with linewidths of 1-2 kHz were observed and have been used successfully to document the inequivalent positions both by single and double transition spectra. Further, small applied fields, inducing Zeeman splitting, have proven the deuterons observed to be from the transition frequencies of two different deuterons. Individual spectra are shown for all compounds included …
An Empirical Investigation Of The Financial Statement Characteristics Of Firms Engaging In In-Substance Defeasance Of Debt., Raymond Jeffords Jr
An Empirical Investigation Of The Financial Statement Characteristics Of Firms Engaging In In-Substance Defeasance Of Debt., Raymond Jeffords Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Extinguishment of debt through in-substance defeasance is a powerful debt management tool that enables corporations to eliminate debt from their balance sheets and record substantial gains on extinguishment whenever market rates of interest exceed the coupon rate of defeased debt. Corporations engaging in in-substance defeasance must conform to the provision of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 76, Extinguishment of Debt, issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board in 1983. Critics of Statement No. 76 charge that in-substance defeasance may be used to window dress the financial statements. This study represents an initial test of the assertion that in-substance defeasance …

Isolation, Characterization, And Symbiotic Effectiveness In Soybeans Of Exopolysaccharide Mutants Of Rhizobium Fredii Usda191., Young Hwan Ko
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Chapter 1. Production of exopolysaccharides by Rhizobium has been linked with efficient invasion and nodulation of leguminous plant roots by the bacteria. Exopolysaccharide-deficient (exo) mutants of Rhizobium fredii USDA191 were isolated by Tn5-insertion mutagenesis. Five phenotypically unique exo mutants were investigated for exopolysaccharide synthesis and their ability to nodulate soybeans. The exopolysaccharides produced by these mutants were analyzed for polysaccharide composition by column chromatography and thin layer chromatography. Two mutants designated exo3 and exo5 were deficient in both the neutral glucan and exopolysaccharide synthesis, but still made effective nodules on Glycine max cv. Peking, although with decreased efficiency. The remaining …
Prospect Theory In Governmental Accounting: Implications For The Budgeting Process At The Local Level., Karen Sue Mckenzie
Prospect Theory In Governmental Accounting: Implications For The Budgeting Process At The Local Level., Karen Sue Mckenzie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Small local governmental units are responsible for allocating resources on behalf of a substantial portion of all United States citizens. The research reported here investigates the effects of presentation format (or framing) on decision preference in a governmental resource allocation context. The subjects represent a population of governmental units which has not received prior research attention--small local governments. Budget preparers were asked to choose among objectively identical alternatives, which differed in presentation formats. The cases used to investigate the effects of presentation were modelled after Kahneman and Tversky's (1979) seminal work in prospect theory, which addressed violations of expected utility …
Phonological And Language Improvements In Preschool Children: A Comparison Of Phonological Process Targeting And Whole Language Training., Joann Monjure
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study compared phonological and language changes that occurred in preschool phonologically-impaired children following treatment via a discrete phonological process targeting approach or a whole language approach. It was hypothesized that a treatment program utilizing a communication-based, whole language approach would result in improvements in various language domains (e.g., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics), while treatment targeting a specific aspect of language, that is, phonology, would result in improvements limited to that specific domain. Subjects were eight preschool children, 3-4 years of age, exhibiting multiple articulation errors, and randomly assigned to one of two intervention programs for a six-week …
