The Relation Of Compliance To Quality Of Life In Dialysis Patients., Linda S. Dietz
The Relation Of Compliance To Quality Of Life In Dialysis Patients., Linda S. Dietz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of the current study was to gain knowledge of the impact that dietary compliance has on quality of life for end-stage renal disease patients receiving chronic in-center hemodialysis. As a result of this type of research, health care professionals may better understand the individual and collective influence that various aspects of dietary compliance have on quality of life. This knowledge may be helpful in making future recommendations about the necessity of the dietary regimen. This study investigated the relation between three commonly employed physiological parameters of dietary compliance (blood urea nitrogen, potassium, and intersession weight gain) and four …
Modeling, Simulation, And Automatic Control For Optimum Drying And Storage Of Rough Rice In A Bin System., Jong Hoon Chung
Modeling, Simulation, And Automatic Control For Optimum Drying And Storage Of Rough Rice In A Bin System., Jong Hoon Chung
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A study on modeling, simulation, and automatic control for optimum drying and storage of rough rice in a farm-bin system was conducted to address some aspects of rice post-harvest technology. Resistance-type moisture sensors and temperature and humidity sensors were evaluated for continuously monitoring the conditions of air and grain. Models to predict rice moisture models during drying and storage were developed. Based on accuracy and predictability, the use of the capacitance-type humidity sensor is recommended over the resistance-type moisture sensor. A pressure drop model of airflow through rough rice was developed to aid in determining the optimum size and type …
Dispersion And Physiological Ecology Of Mosquito Adults In Louisiana Ricelands., Alan Richard Holck
Dispersion And Physiological Ecology Of Mosquito Adults In Louisiana Ricelands., Alan Richard Holck
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A sampling technique for estimating the size of adult mosquito populations in vegetation was developed. Regression analysis was used to obtain absolute density estimates from sweep net. Diurnal population size estimates of Louisiana riceland mosquitoes were made on a 35.6-square km site 5 km south of Kaplan, LA. Four mosquito species were present: Psorophora columbiae, Anopheles quadrimaculatus, An. crucians and Culex salinarius. Mosquito species were highly stratified in their distribution. Psorophora columbiae was primarily observed in pastures with livestock and in rice fields. Both Anophelines were found only in structures. Culex salinarius did not exhibit habitat preference. Anopheles quadrimaculatus exhibited …
Agrobacterium Tumefaciens - Mediated Transfer Of Plant Dna For Gene Expression Analysis., Woo Sung Lee
Agrobacterium Tumefaciens - Mediated Transfer Of Plant Dna For Gene Expression Analysis., Woo Sung Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Agrobacterium tumefaciens causes crown gall tumor primarily in dicotyledonous plants. The infection mechanism reveals that a portion of bacterial DNA (T-DNA) is transferred into the plant nuclear genome. This transformation system is widely utilized in plant genetic engineering and plant molecular biology. In this dissertation, two experiments were carried out. First, the copy number, physical structure and F1 segregations of T-DNA copies were analyzed, attempting to understand the mode of T-DNA integration into the plant genome. While the mechanism of Agrobacterium response to plant signals and generation and transfer of T-DNA intermediates through actions of virulence genes is generally understood, …
Density Theorems For Reciprocity Equivalences., Thomas Carrere Palfrey
Density Theorems For Reciprocity Equivalences., Thomas Carrere Palfrey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The author studies reciprocity equivalence and the wild set of a reciprocity equivalence. He proves that if two algebraic number fields K and L are reciprocity equivalent then there exists a reciprocity equivalence between them with an infinite wild set. In particular, there always exists a self-equivalence with an infinite wild set on any algebraic number field. Even though a wild set of an equivalence can be infinite, he proves that its Dirichlet density is always zero. The structure of a reciprocity equivalence is examined. He proves that the bijection on primes determines the group isomorphism on global square classes …
Nonresonant Multiphoton Ionization Of Alkaline Earth Atoms In Intense Laser Fields., Dal-Woo Kim
Nonresonant Multiphoton Ionization Of Alkaline Earth Atoms In Intense Laser Fields., Dal-Woo Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
When an atomic beam interacts with a high intensity laser beam, ionization occurs even if the photon energy is less than the threshold level for ionization of the atom. In this thesis, nonresonant multiphoton ionization of alkaline-earth atoms is examined experimentally. Since alkaline-earth atoms have doubly excited states just above and sometimes below the first ionization threshold level and are easily ionized with relatively low intensity, they are ideally suited for studying the role of electron correlations in multiphoton ionization. This motivated a careful and detailed investigation of the correlation of electrons and the multiphoton ionization mechanism. A spectroscopic study …
Three Essays On Price Volatility And Trading Volume In Financial Markets., Percy Siuping Poon
Three Essays On Price Volatility And Trading Volume In Financial Markets., Percy Siuping Poon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The objective of this dissertation is to examine the stock price volatility-volume relationship. The dissertation begins with an estimation of the time deformation market model in which stock contemporaneous trading volume is utilized as a proxy for the rate of information arrival. This local time market model is economically appealing because it is capable of explaining the observed heteroskedasticity and leptokurtosis in daily return data. With a sample of firms which have stock splits, it is shown that the inferences drawn from a modified event study which incorporates the local time market model are similar to those drawn from a …
Dangerousness: Risk Assessment For Violent Behavior., Charles Edward Shaffer Jr
Dangerousness: Risk Assessment For Violent Behavior., Charles Edward Shaffer Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Federal court decisions and state and federal legislation have made the legal concept of dangerousness the predominant criterion in involuntary mental health hospital commitments and in determining the least restrictive custody level in prison inmate custody assignments. However, no adequate consensual definition with empirical methods of measurement exists. Megargee's (1976) definition of dangerousness as the probability of violent behavior was used as the basis for an empirical approach to measuring dangerousness in this study. Recent studies in the literature (Monohan, 1984; Klassen & O'Conner, 1988) suggested that discriminant analysis might be an appropriate methodology for model development. Review of the …
Theories Of Economic Regulation And The Development Of The Doctrine Of "Conspiracies In Restraint Of Trade" In The Labor Market., Edd Sidney Noell
Theories Of Economic Regulation And The Development Of The Doctrine Of "Conspiracies In Restraint Of Trade" In The Labor Market., Edd Sidney Noell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the development of the doctrine of "conspiracies in restraint of trade" in the labor market by means of an application of two models of economic regulation. As heuristic devices, these models are utilized to explain the formation of English and American labor law in three different eras. The market failure model posits that labor market regulators seek to remedy unequal bargaining power and asymmetric information so as to achieve economic efficiency. This model's 'liberty and virtue' component emphasizes the normative end of character formation. According to the interest group model, organized labor …

Factors Associated With The Production Of Export Quality Fruit By Small Banana Farmers Of The Rio Grande Valley, Portland, Jamaica., Terrence W. Thomas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The study was aimed at determining the relationship between two production variables--technology use, and production of export quality fruit--of small banana farmers in the Rio Grande Valley, Jamaica and selected socioeconomic, personal characteristic and opinion variables, assessing the amount of variance in production explained by the latter, and identifying variables that moderate or mediate the relationship between production variables. The target population was 120 farmers selling bananas to a public boxing plant. A random sample of non-banana farmers was used as a cross-validation check to make inferences to all farmers. Farmers were personally interviewed using a pretested schedule. Stepwise multiple …
Molecular Biological Studies On The Degradation Of Diphenyl Ethers By Bacteria., Hung-Ming James Liaw
Molecular Biological Studies On The Degradation Of Diphenyl Ethers By Bacteria., Hung-Ming James Liaw
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Microbial degradation of diphenyl ethers was studied utilizing several different approaches. The first approach was to isolate mutants from a ligninolytic Erwinia sp. by conventional mutagenesis and selection. A copper-resistant mutant, designated as Erwinia sp. CU3614, was isolated and characterized to be capable of degrading diphenyl ethers as well as one dibenzo-p-dioxin in the presence of copper ions. Isolation of Tn5 transposon-induced mutants of Erwinia sp. CU3614, which lost degradation ability, demonstrated that in all probability a copper-associated activity in the biotransformation of aromatic ethers was involved. In order to study the degradation at the molecular biological level, a 2.1 …

Ecological Consequences Of Variation In Pollinator Availability: Ocotillo, Carpenter Bees, And Hummingbirds In Two Deserts., Peter Evans Scott
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I studied the pollination ecology of a widespread desert shrub, ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens), and some of the consequences of geographic variation in availability of pollinators. I studied ocotillo in the Chihuahuan Desert of western Texas (Big Bend National Park) for three flowering seasons, and in the Sonoran Desert of southern California (Anza-Borrego Desert State Park) for parts of two flowering seasons. In both areas, ocotillo flowers profusely for one month each year, and requires outcross pollination to mature more than 5% of its potential seed crop. In Texas, carpenter bees (Xylocopa californica arizonensis) and their nest plants (species of Agave, …

Rice Bran Stabilization By Improved Internal And External Heating Methods., Jiaxun Tao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rice bran stabilization was conducted by internal (microwave), external (oven drying and steam retorting) heating and non-heating ($\sp{60}$Co irradiation) treatments to improve currently used methods. Two commercial rice varieties cultivated in Louisiana, one long grain (Lemont) and a medium grain (Nato), were milled to collect bran samples. The bran was analyzed for its proximate composition and various physical and thermal characteristics. The proximate composition for long and medium grain bran, respectively, was: moisture, 11.2% and 10.8%; protein, 16.07% and 16.20%; fat, 19.20% and 21.97%; crude fiber, 8.49% and 8.41%; ash, 9.23% and 9.46%; and nitrogen-free extract, 47.01% and 44.07%. Physical …
The Macroeconomics Of Presidential Popularity., Susan Katherine Washburn
The Macroeconomics Of Presidential Popularity., Susan Katherine Washburn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines several issues dealing with the public's social preference function between inflation and unemployment. First, the preference function is estimated as a nonlinear function. Second, the thesis analyzes the ability of a presidential administration to improve its popularity level by exploiting a short-run Phillips curve. Finally, preference functions disaggregated by sex, race, political party, and geographical region are estimated. Presidential approval levels are proxied by monthly Gallup Poll approval data. Chapter One serves as an overview of the current body of literature. While theoretical analyses of macroeconomic policy have traditionally assumed that the public's social preference function is …
Avian Influenza Viruses In Coastal Louisiana Waterfowl: Host And Environmental Factors Affecting Prevalence And Viral Persistence., David Edward Stallknecht
Avian Influenza Viruses In Coastal Louisiana Waterfowl: Host And Environmental Factors Affecting Prevalence And Viral Persistence., David Edward Stallknecht
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cloacal and tracheal swabs were collected from 1,389 hunter-killed ducks in Cameron Parish, Louisiana during the 1986 and 1987 waterfowl seasons. These included 605 blue-winged teal (Anas discors), 75 mottled ducks (A. fulvigula), 375 gadwalls (A. strepera) and 334 green-winged teal (A. crecca). Twenty-eight avian influenza viruses (AIVs) were isolated. Prevalence estimates of AIV in ducks during September, November and December/January were 3.1%, 2.1%, and 0.4%, respectively. Differences in prevalence were detected by season ($P$ =.044) and age class ($P$ =.036). Two isolations from resident mottled ducks indicate local transmission of AIV on these wintering areas. Much subtype diversity was …

Syntheses Of Organometallic Platinum(Ii), Platinum(Iv), And Palladium(Ii) Complexes And Methyl Functionalization Of 2-Methyl- And 2,7-Dimethyl-1,8-Naphthyridine., Kevin J. Theriot
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The syntheses of several new metalated and cyclometalated organoplatinum(II) complexes of $C$-malonato ligands have been accomplished. These complexes were characterized by $\sp1$H and $\sp{13}$C NMR and IR. The trans cyclometalated complexes utilized pyridinyl ligands possessing pendant groups at the 2-position with terminal malonate groups capable of forming either a five- or six-membered $C,N$-chelate. X-ray crystal structure determinations of these cyclometalated complexes were also done. The acyclic cis complexes are $N,N\sp\prime$-chelates of dipyridine or phenanthroline in which platinum is bonded to the central carbons of two different dimethyl malonate ligands. These $N,N\sp\prime$-chelates were easily oxidized by either Br$\sb2$ or Cl$\sb2$ to …

The Impact Of Vertebrate Herbivores On Primary Production Of Sagittaria Marshes In The Wax Lake Delta, Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana., Jenneke Maria Visser
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Aboveground production of tidal freshwater marshes dominated by Sagittaria latifolia or Sagittaria platyphylla is best estimated with nondestructive techniques. A nondestructive method for estimation of Sagittaria aboveground biomass and production was developed using multiple regression. This technique yielded estimates of aboveground biomass of Sagittaria ranging from 0 to 1875 g/m$\sp2$; harvested aboveground biomass of Sagittaria ranged from 85 to 1356 g/m$\sp2$. Aboveground production was estimated nondestructively on the basis of permanent plots (465-3809 g/m$\sp2$/yr) and destructively on the basis of end-of-season biomass (775-4056 g/m$\sp2$/yr). Destructively estimated belowground production ranged from 233 to 1199 g/m$\sp2$/yr. Aboveground production was positively correlated with …
Dynamic Models Of The High-Temperature Desulfurization Process In A Fixed-Bed Reactor., Ching-Pin Wang
Dynamic Models Of The High-Temperature Desulfurization Process In A Fixed-Bed Reactor., Ching-Pin Wang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The widespread adoption of coal-fueled advanced electric power generation systems depends upon the ability to remove H$\sb2$S from the gasifier product. While H$\sb2$S can be removed by traditional wet scrubbing methods, sensible heat is lost, thereby reducing the overall system efficiency. High temperature desulfurization is now possible using newly developed metal oxide sorbents which are capable of reducing the H$\sb2$S concentration to less than 10 ppmv from a laboratory scale fixed-bed reactor using a simulated coal gas. In this study, reactor simulation models capable of describing the high temperature sulfidation and regeneration reactions of metal oxide sorbents in a fixed-bed …
Land Subsidence And Saltwater Intrusion In Coastal Areas., Song-Kai Yan
Land Subsidence And Saltwater Intrusion In Coastal Areas., Song-Kai Yan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Land subsidence and saltwater intrusion problems are encountered concurrently or individually in many coastal areas, especially where heavy pumping is exerted. In order to evaluate the extent and progress of these two phenomena in quantity and quality, a two-dimensional model, the STRALAN (Solute $\underline{\rm Tra}$nsport and $\underline{\rm Lan}$d Subsidence) model, is developed to simulate fluid movement, solute transport and land subsidence in a non-homogeneous, anisotropic, compressible and sloping aquifer system. The governing equations of the model, i.e., the fluid mass balance equation, solute mass balance equation and land subsidence equation for confined or unconfined as well as for sloping aquifers …
To Be West Indian: Autobiography And West Indian Literature., Margaret Kent Bass
To Be West Indian: Autobiography And West Indian Literature., Margaret Kent Bass
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although some critics claim that autobiography is not a West Indian literary mode, I maintain that autobiography, of a special West Indian variety, is necessarily present, for it provides a way of defining the self and bringing the parts of the self together into a unified and coherent whole. Autobiography is the genre that oppressed and colonized populations have traditionally used to write themselves into history and to proclaim their humanity to the world. The writing of autobiography is essential to the process of decolonization, for the colonized must define themselves and recreate themselves in their own images thereby resisting …
Kinetics Of Chromate And Phosphate Sorption By Oxide Minerals And Soils., David S. Burden
Kinetics Of Chromate And Phosphate Sorption By Oxide Minerals And Soils., David S. Burden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A nonlinear multireaction model was used to describe kinetic retention data sets for chromate, phosphate, arsenate, borate, fluoride, molybdate, selenite, and silicate by goethite, an iron oxide mineral, and selected soils. These data sets were obtained from laboratory batch experiments with time up to 24 h. Either a three-parameter version of the model consisting of one nonlinear reversible and one first order irreversible reaction, or a five-parameter version consisting of two nonlinear reversible and one first order irreversible reactions was capable of predicting anion sorption by goethite. A mechanistic model consistent with the nonlinear multireaction approach was also proposed in …

St. Croix is a sedimentary island at the juncture of two northeastern Caribbean tectonic provinces. For this reason, the sedimentary development of St. Croix is of considerable importance to regional tectonic reconstruction. This dissertation utilizes evidence from outcrops and samples from an extensive drilling program on St. Croix, and addresses three major subjects: (1) the biostratigraphy and correlation of the Tertiary section, (2) the sedimentological and tectonic development of the Tertiary basin, and (3) the diagenesis and dolomitization of the St. Croix carbonates. Previous models of the late Tertiary development of St. Croix presume a static, isolated land mass, with …
An Anisotropic Finite Plasticity Model For Continuum Damage Mechanics., Peter Issa Kattan
An Anisotropic Finite Plasticity Model For Continuum Damage Mechanics., Peter Issa Kattan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A constitutive model is formulated for anisotropic continuum damage mechanics using first elasticity and then finite strain plasticity. The formulation is given in spatial coordinates (Eulerian reference frame) and incorporates both isotropic and kinematic hardening. The von Mises yield criterion is modified to include the effects of damage through the use of the hypothesis of elastic energy equivalence. A modified elasto-plastic stiffness tensor that includes the effects of damage is derived within the framework of the proposed model. The damage variable used represents average material degradation which reflects the various types of damage at the microscale level like nucleation and …
A Total Lagrangian Finite Element Analysis For Metal Forming With Application To Metal Extrusion., Mehrdad Foroozesh
A Total Lagrangian Finite Element Analysis For Metal Forming With Application To Metal Extrusion., Mehrdad Foroozesh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A detailed formulation for finite element analysis of metal forming problems is carried out in this work. It incorporates every aspect of the analysis, including the iterative solution procedures for geometric and material non-linearities, implementation of the material model, and formulation of curved contact boundaries. The finite element formulation is based on a Total Lagrangian approach which by-passes the use of the Jaumann stress rate tensor commonly used in the Updated Lagrangian formulation. The yield model used is of the von Mises type with both kinematic and isotropic hardening and is formulated in the Eulerian space. This model is then …
Geometric Modeling And Recognition Of Elongated Regions In Images., Charles Anthony Lipari Ii
Geometric Modeling And Recognition Of Elongated Regions In Images., Charles Anthony Lipari Ii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of this research is the recovery of elongated shapes from patterns of local features extracted from images. A generic geometric model-based approach is developed based on general concepts of 2-d form and structure. This is an intermediate-level analysis that is computed from groupings and decompositions of related low-level features. Axial representations are used to describe the shapes of image objects having the property of elongatedness. Curve-fitting is shown to compute axial sequences of the points in an elongated cluster. Script-clustering is performed about a parametric smooth curve to extract elongated partitions of the data incorporating constraints of point …
