Landscape Development And Coastal Wetland Losses In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner Feb 1990

Landscape Development And Coastal Wetland Losses In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

The causes of the extensive (0.86%/yr; 288,414 ha/yr) and well documented dramatic and accelerating rate of coastal wetland loss in the northern Gulf of Mexico were investigated by an interdisciplinary university research team to discern the role of outer continental shelf development. The landscape changes and potential causal agents are emphasized herein. Natural driving factors include sea level rise and geological com- paction, which appear to remain constant this century, and sediment supply from the Mississippi River which has declined by 50%,since the 1950s. Man-made influences include hydrologic changes from river diversions, flood protection levees, an extensive canal and spoil …

Utilizing A Network Program Representation To Support Production System Program Development And Execution., Sally Jo Cunningham Jan 1990

Utilizing A Network Program Representation To Support Production System Program Development And Execution., Sally Jo Cunningham

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation discusses modifications of the internal architecture of production systems that could significantly increase the execution performance of production system programs. This increased efficiency is achieved in part by modifications to the matching step of the execution cycle. Rather than checking all possible instantiations, we propose to consider only a small subset of the potential instantiations which are the "best candidates" for firing (according to the conflict resolution scheme). The increased execution efficiency provided by this matching strategy is compounded by modifying the OPS5 conflict resolution strategies. We propose a goal-directed (look-ahead) conflict resolution strategy which will still retain …

The Transport And Fate Of Chromium(Vi) In Deep Well Disposal Zone., Jaehyuk Hyun Jan 1990

The Transport And Fate Of Chromium(Vi) In Deep Well Disposal Zone., Jaehyuk Hyun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Several parameters affecting the behavior of Chromium(+VI) in deep well injection zones were studied. Temperature, pH, concentration of inorganic salt in wastewater, and organic chemicals co-injected with wastewater were considered as they affect the adsorption and reduction rates of Cr(VI). Water content, bulk density of shale and sand, and temperature were examined for their effect on the diffusion rate of Cr(VI) in porous media. Adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI) were investigated using three clays, Na-Montmorillonite, Illite, and Kaolinite, and sand from an injection well formation in southern Louisiana, and a confining layer shale obtained from a second Louisiana injection well. …

Factors Affecting The Foraging Ecology Of The Rock Snail Stramonita Haemastoma., Terry David Richardson Jan 1990

Factors Affecting The Foraging Ecology Of The Rock Snail Stramonita Haemastoma., Terry David Richardson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I examined how wave action and predators affect the feeding of the intertidal snail, Stramonita haemastoma. In laboratory wave simulators, the numbers of oysters eaten and tissue mass consumed were reduced compared to controls, but prey size selection was not affected. Handling times and profits (g dry tissue/handling time) of snails feeding on oysters did not differ between snails in wave simulators and controls. Over both treatments, small oysters reduced snail handling times but provided profits similar to that of large oysters. In contrast, field experiments showed that wave exposure was correlated with an increase in the number of oysters …

Factors Involved In Immune Modulation Of Bovine Leukemia Virus Infection., Wanda V. Pool Jan 1990

Factors Involved In Immune Modulation Of Bovine Leukemia Virus Infection., Wanda V. Pool

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) is an exogenous type-C retrovirus which can induce an aleukemic (AL) stage, a persistent lymphocytotic (PL) stage, or a lymphosarcomatous (LS) stage in infected animals. After experimental infection with BLV, whole blood and serum samples were obtained from 12 holstein heifers for 103 weeks and used to correlate clinical signs (visual observation and white blood cell counts) with changes in humoral immune response (Agar gel immunodiffusion using envelope gp50 as primary antigen, and ELISA and Western immunoblots using whole BLV as antigen). Monoclonal antibodies against BLV envelope gp50 and gag p24 were produced to confirm reactivity …

A Study Of Internal Auditor Perceptions Of Selected Audit Activities Performed During The Design Phase Of Systems Development., Margaret Virginia Cerullo Jan 1990

A Study Of Internal Auditor Perceptions Of Selected Audit Activities Performed During The Design Phase Of Systems Development., Margaret Virginia Cerullo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Little evidence exists concerning the criteria which internal auditors consider when selecting activities to perform during systems design. Likewise, knowledge concerning the perceived role(s) of the internal auditor in systems design is limited. This dissertation examined the perceptions of internal auditors who have assisted in the development of a system and have, therefore, participated in the choosing of activities to perform during systems development. Nine systems design audit activities were selected from the literature to represent the different levels of involvement recommended in the literature. Internal auditors' judgments of the similarity of the nine audit activities were collected in two …

Open And Closed Systems In Data Analysis Entropy., Hamid Reza Jafari Jan 1990

Open And Closed Systems In Data Analysis Entropy., Hamid Reza Jafari

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents an efficient and integrated approach to data analysis. Entropy data analysis is an evolution of reconstructability analysis, which investigates the relationships between parts and wholes. The central theme of the dissertation is the development of a system to condense the information in a data set into a small number of parameters. The new system is called a k-system. k-system analysis goes beyond traditional data analysis in that it has the potentiality for changes to be made to a system; and the impact of these changes can be evaluated. k-system can be useful in designing and evaluating open …

Political Rationality And Irrationality: The Case Of The Lebanese Forces., Leila El-Tawil Sarieddine Jan 1990

Political Rationality And Irrationality: The Case Of The Lebanese Forces., Leila El-Tawil Sarieddine

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Rationalist theories of coalition formation have centered on one and only one principle: that individual conduct is totally determined by the endeavor to relate means to ends as efficiently as possible. Specifically, the theory holds that human conduct is wholly determined by rationality. Rationalist political theory is extremely useful for gaining insight into the field of coalition formation and maintenance. Work on coalitions often in turn derives from n-person game theory. It has attempted to predict the formation of coalitions, distribution of spoils, and the allocation of power among major social groups in divided societies. Rational choice theory suggests that …

Diffusivity Estimation For Counterdiffusing Reactants In Catalytic Solids., Chauchyun Chang Jan 1990

Diffusivity Estimation For Counterdiffusing Reactants In Catalytic Solids., Chauchyun Chang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The diffusivities of molecules whose sizes approach the intracrystalline pore sizes of zeolites have been studied at and near conditions prevailing during catalysis, by both desorption and kinetics techniques. For the desorption approach, a series of unary isothermal desorption experiments (following an almost instantaneous initial temperature rise) were conducted for toluene or benzene with five different zeolites. Diffusion and readsorption are shown to control the process. The intracrystalline diffusivities (D$\sb{\rm e}$) were derived by fitting the desorption curves with four models of varying complexity; only models which take into account readsorption (either at equilibrium or not) can both fit the …

Juvenile Penaeid Shrimp Ecology In A Louisiana Coastal Marsh Management Area., Everett Eric Knudsen Jan 1990

Juvenile Penaeid Shrimp Ecology In A Louisiana Coastal Marsh Management Area., Everett Eric Knudsen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Juvenile penaeid shrimp were studied by a variety of methods in a southwest Louisiana, brackish marsh. Most of the work was conducted in two study ponds, one with a fixed-crest weir and the other without. In mark and recapture studies, both brown shrimp Penaeus aztecus and white shrimp P. setiferus were found to grow faster in marsh behind a fixed-crest weir. There was no apparent weir effect on mortality of either species. Brown shrimp emigrated an average of 12 d later from marsh behind the weir; white shrimp were sometimes delayed by the weir. The peak of brown shrimp emigration …

Occurrence Of A Thiothrix Sp. Attached To Mayfly Larvae And Presence Of Parasitic Bacteria In The Thiothrix Sp., J. M. Larkin, M. C. Henk, S. D. Burton Jan 1990

Occurrence Of A Thiothrix Sp. Attached To Mayfly Larvae And Presence Of Parasitic Bacteria In The Thiothrix Sp., J. M. Larkin, M. C. Henk, S. D. Burton

Faculty Publications

Larvae of the mayfly (Drunella gransi [Eaton]) from Diamond Fork Creek, Utah, were covered with a heavy growth of the sulfide-oxidizing bacterium Thiothrix. The bacterium did not seem to harm the mayfly, but the Thiothrix trichomes were parasitized by three morphologically distinct bacteria, two of which were cytoplasmic and one of which was probably periplasmic. At least two of the parasites destroyed the cytoplasmic contents of the Thiothrix sp., thus killing the host cell. Attempts to obtain the parasites in pure culture were unsuccessful.

A New Chloroplast Protein Is Induced By Growth On Low Co2 In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Livingston J. Manuel, James V. Moroney Jan 1990

A New Chloroplast Protein Is Induced By Growth On Low Co2 In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Livingston J. Manuel, James V. Moroney

Faculty Publications

The biosynthesis of a 36 kilodalton polypeptide of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was induced by photoautotrophic growth on low CO2. Fractionation studies using the cell-wall-deficient strain of C. reinhardtii, CC-400, showed that this polypeptide was different from the low CO2-induced periplasmic carbonic anhydrase. In addition, the 36 kilodalton polypeptide was found to be localized in intact chloroplasts isolated from low CO2-adapting cultures. This protein may, in part, account for the different inorganic carbon uptake characteristics observed in chloroplasts isolated from high and low CO2-grown C. reinhardtii cells.

Effects Of Added Manganic And Ferric Oxides On Sulfate Reduction And Sulfide Oxidation In Intertidal Sediments, Gary M. King Jan 1990

Effects Of Added Manganic And Ferric Oxides On Sulfate Reduction And Sulfide Oxidation In Intertidal Sediments, Gary M. King

Faculty Publications

Freshly precipitated iron or manganese oxides were added to surface sediments from a salt marsh and from the intertidal region of Lowes Cove, Maine. In the presence of added manganese, sulfate was formed under anoxic conditions, suggesting a manganese dependent sulfide oxidation. Sulfate formation was not observed with iron additions. Sulfate reduction was substantially but not completely inhibited by either metal oxide, even though both were added at levels well in excess though both were added at levels well in excess of natural concentrations. Manganese-catalysed sulfide oxidation was further documented using a combination of radiolabel, metal oxide, and inhibitor additions, …

Distribution And Rate Of Methane Oxidation In Sediments Of The Florida Everglades, G. M. King, P. Roslev, H. Skovgaard Jan 1990

Distribution And Rate Of Methane Oxidation In Sediments Of The Florida Everglades, G. M. King, P. Roslev, H. Skovgaard

Faculty Publications

Rates of methane emission from intact cores were measured during anoxic dark and oxic light and dark incubations. Rates of methane oxidation were calculated on the basis of oxic incubations by using the anoxic emissions as an estimate of the maximum potential flux. This technique indicated that methane oxidation consumed up to 91% of the maximum potential flux in peat sediments but that oxidation was negligible in marl sediments. Oxygen microprofiles determined for intact cores were comparable to profiles measured in situ. Thus, the laboratory incubations appeared to provide a reasonable approximation of in situ activities. This was further supported …

Antimicrobial Susceptibilities Of Staphylococcal Species Isolated From Mammary Glands Of Unbred And Primigravid Dairy Heifers, P. Trinidad, S. C. Nickerson, D. G. Luther

Faculty Publications

Staphylococcal isolates from teat canal keratin and mammary secretion samples of unbred and primigravid Jersey heifers were tested in vitro for susceptibility to 12 antimicrobial agents. More than 92% of the 311 isolates were susceptible to all antimicrobial agents tested. Staphylococci other than Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated an overall susceptibility of 98.3% to all antibiotics, and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated a 97% susceptibility. Across all staphylococcal species, susceptibility of isolates from secretion samples was 98.1%, and susceptibility of isolates from teat canal keratin samples was 93.1%. Differences in susceptibilities were observed among herds. © 1990, American Dairy Science Association. All rights reserved.

Interactive Effects Of Sodium Zeolite A (Ethacal) And Monensin In Uninfected And Eimeria Acervulina-Infected Chicks., T. L. Ward, K. L. Watkins, L. L. Southern

Faculty Publications

An experiment was conducted with 5- to 18-day-old Arbor Acres broiler chicks to evaluate the interaction of sodium zeolite A (NZA) and monensin in uninfected and in coccidiosis-infected chicks. Sodium zeolite A (0 and .75%) or monensin (0 and 121 ppm), or both, were fed to uninfected chicks or to chicks infected with 4 x 10(5) sporulated, Eimeria acervulina oocysts, resulting in a 2-by-2-by-2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Coccidial infection reduced (P less than .01) weight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, percentage of bone ash and of bone calcium; but the infection increased (P less than .05) bone Zn percentage. …
