As the size of the cycloalkenyl ring in synthetic C5-C7 tetracycloalkenyl-meso-tetraphenylporphyrins (TCnTPP) is increased the porphyrin core changes from planar to non-planar, showing that porphyrins with well-defined degrees of ruffling can be synthesized for use in systematic studies to determine the effects of non-planarity. © 1990.

Insulin Responsiveness In Skeletal Muscle Is Determined By Glucose Transporter (Glut4) Protein Level, M. Kern, J. A. Wells, J. M. Stephens, C. W. Elton, J. E. Friedman, E. B. Tapscott, P. H. Pekala, G. L. Dohm Jan 1990

Insulin Responsiveness In Skeletal Muscle Is Determined By Glucose Transporter (Glut4) Protein Level, M. Kern, J. A. Wells, J. M. Stephens, C. W. Elton, J. E. Friedman, E. B. Tapscott, P. H. Pekala, G. L. Dohm

Faculty Publications

Glucose transport in skeletal muscle is mediated by two distinct transporter isoforms, designated muscle/adipose glucose transporter (Glut4) and erythrocyte/HepG2/brain glucose transporter (Glut1), which differ in both abundance and membrane distribution. The present study was designed to investigate whether differences in insulin responsiveness of red and white muscle might be due to differential expression of the glucose transporter isoforms. Glucose transport, as well as Glut1 and Glut4 protein and mRNA levels, were determined in red and white portions of the quadriceps and gastrocnemius muscles of male Sprague-Dawley rats (body wt. approx. 250 g). Maximal glucose transport (in response to 100 nM-insulin) …

Intrinsic Tryptophan Fluorescence Measurements Suggest That Polylactosaminyl Glycosylation Affects The Protein Conformation Of The Gelatin‐Binding Domain From Human Placental Fibronectin, Betty C.R. Zhu, Roger A. Laine, Mary D. Barkley Jan 1990

Intrinsic Tryptophan Fluorescence Measurements Suggest That Polylactosaminyl Glycosylation Affects The Protein Conformation Of The Gelatin‐Binding Domain From Human Placental Fibronectin, Betty C.R. Zhu, Roger A. Laine, Mary D. Barkley

Faculty Publications

Glycosylation can affect the physical and biochemical properties of the polypeptide chain in glycoproteins. Asparagine‐N‐linked polylactosaminyl glycosylation of the chymotryptic 44‐kDa gelatin‐binding domain from human placental fibronectin confers protease resistance [Zhu, B. C. R., Fisher, S. F., Panda, H., Calaycay, J., Shively, J. E. & Laine, R. A. (1984) J. Biol. Chem. 259, 3962–3970] and weakens the binding to gelatin [Zhu, B. C. R. & Laine, R. A. (1985) J. Biol. Chem. 260, 4041–4045]. Intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence of the gelatinbinding domain was used to probe glycosylation‐dependent protein conformation changes. In gelatin‐binding fragments containing incrementally smaller polylactosamine oligosaccharides, the fluorescence intensity …

Dynamics And Controls Of Methane Oxidation In A Danish Wetland Sediment, Gary M. King Jan 1990

Dynamics And Controls Of Methane Oxidation In A Danish Wetland Sediment, Gary M. King

Faculty Publications

Abstract The patterns and controls of methane oxidation in a Danish wetland sediment have been determined using a combination of slurry and intact core techniques. Results from slurries indicated that methane oxidation was effectively inhibited by low concentrations of nitrapyrin (9 μM) and acetylene (0.5 μM) but that oxidation was relatively insensitive to pH between 6 and 8; in addition, high concentrations of ammonia (1 mM) decreased oxidation, especially at alkaline pH. Kinetic analyses of methane oxidation in slurries indicated that Vmax was high relative to values reported for other sediments, that Vmax changed seasonally, that Km was consistently low …

Formation Of Methylmercaptan And Dimethylsulfide From Methoxylated Aromatic Compounds In Anoxic Marine And Fresh Water Sediments, Kai Finster, Gary M. King, Friedhelm Bak Jan 1990

Formation Of Methylmercaptan And Dimethylsulfide From Methoxylated Aromatic Compounds In Anoxic Marine And Fresh Water Sediments, Kai Finster, Gary M. King, Friedhelm Bak

Faculty Publications

Abstract Anaerobic formation of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and methylmercaptan (MSH) in anoxic sulfide‐containing slurries from marine and fresh water sediments was stimulated by addition of syringate (4‐hydroxy,3,5,‐dimethoxybenzoate) and 3,4,5,‐trimethoxybenzoate. The release of DMS and MSH occurred during the consumption of the aromatic monomers and ceased after their depletion. DMS was the dominant methylated sulfur compound in fresh water sediments, in contrast to marine sediments where MSH was predominant. No production of volatile organic sulfur compounds was observed in slurries containing gallate (3,4,5,‐trihydroxybenzoate) or in autoclaved controled. About 50–65% of the methoxy carbon could be accounted for by peak accumulation of DMS …

Slowdown In The Decline Of Stroke Mortality In The United States, 1978-1986, Richard Cooper, Christopher Sempos, Shih Chao Hsieh, Mary Grace Kovar Jan 1990

Slowdown In The Decline Of Stroke Mortality In The United States, 1978-1986, Richard Cooper, Christopher Sempos, Shih Chao Hsieh, Mary Grace Kovar

Faculty Publications

The gradual decline in stroke mortality rates observed in the United States since 1900 accelerated markedly around 1973 for whites and around 1968 for blacks. During the next decade stroke mortality rates decreased by almost 50% so that the United States now experiences one of the lowest stroke mortality rates in the world. Beginning in 1979, however, the annual rate of decline in stroke mortality began to slow considerably. Comparing the period 1979-1986 with the previous decade, a 57% slowing in the absolute rate of decline (as estimated by the slope of the linear portion of the mortality curve) was …

Speciation And Redox Chemistry Of Selenium And Arsenic In Wetland Soils And Sediments., Patrick Henri Masscheleyn Jan 1990

Speciation And Redox Chemistry Of Selenium And Arsenic In Wetland Soils And Sediments., Patrick Henri Masscheleyn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies dealing with the speciation, species transformations, and solubility of selenium and arsenic as affected by soil or sediment redox potential and pH were initiated because of a lack on information and the need for a better understanding of selenium and arsenic chemistry in wetland soils and sediments. Analytical techniques were developed that permitted the determination of selenium and arsenic species commonly encountered in soils and sediments. The speciation and redox chemistry of selenium and arsenic was studied in selected soils and sediments. Under reduced conditions ($-$200 mV), selenium solubility in sediments from Kesterson Reservoir (CA) and Hyco Reservoir (NC) …

Toward An Expert System For Terrain Analysis., Ravi Narasimhan Jan 1990

Toward An Expert System For Terrain Analysis., Ravi Narasimhan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Terrain analysis is the systematic study of image patterns relating to the origin, and composition of distinct terrain units called landforms. It takes into account and provides information about physical site factors which are used by civil engineers for evaluating the suitability of a site for a terrain related engineering application. Terrain analysis is a time consuming labor intensive process and requires a significant degree of expertise. In this dissertation, an expert system paradigm has been adopted, for developing a computational approach to terrain analysis problem solving. A methodology was developed for the representation and management of uncertain terrain knowledge. …

Theoretical And Pedagogical Applications Of Discourse Analysis To Professional Writing., Kim Sydow Campbell Jan 1990

Theoretical And Pedagogical Applications Of Discourse Analysis To Professional Writing., Kim Sydow Campbell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation attempts to show the utility of discourse analysis for professional writing. The articles collected here fall into three categories: Chapter One provides an overview of the need for a discourse analysis approach in writing research; Chapters Two and Three demonstrate applications of Speech Act Theory to problems in tone; and Chapters Four, Five and Six suggest the role that cohesion and coherence play in professional writing. Chapter One notes that, with the emphasis on process, discourse based research has largely fallen out of favor with writing specialists. Despite this lack of enthusiasm, this chapter demonstrates the importance of …

Lévy Laplacian Of Generalized Functions On A Nuclear Space, Hui Hsiung Kuo, Nobuaki Obata, Kimiaki Saitô Jan 1990

Lévy Laplacian Of Generalized Functions On A Nuclear Space, Hui Hsiung Kuo, Nobuaki Obata, Kimiaki Saitô

Faculty Publications

The Lévy Laplacian ΔF(ξ) = limN→∞N-1∑n = 1N 〈F″(ξ),en⊗ en〉 is shown to be equal to (i) ∝TF″s″(ξ;t)dt, where Fs″ is the singular part of F″, and (ii) 2limρ{variant}→0ρ{variant}-2(MF(ξ,ρ{variant})-F(ξ)), where MF is the spherical mean of F. It is proved that regular polynomials are Δ-harmonic and possess the mean value property. A relation between the Lévy Laplacian Δ and the Gross Laplacian ΔGF(ξ) = ∑n = 1∞=〈F″(ξ),en⊗ en〉 is obtained. An application to white noise calculus is discussed. © 1990.

Local Semigroups In Lie Groups And Locally Reachable Sets, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson Jan 1990

Local Semigroups In Lie Groups And Locally Reachable Sets, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson

Faculty Publications

In this paper the relationship between locally reachable sets for a fixed set of controls in the Lie algebra of a Lie group and the local semigroups generated by the corresponding one-parameter semigroup is considered. It is convenient to carry out the investigation in the Lie algebra itself, and the appropriate machinery for doing this is first developed. It is shown that local semigroups contain locally reachable sets. A general criterion (rerouting) is developed for the converse inclusion, and it is shown that if the set of controls is contained in a proper cone or is a Lie wedge (i.e., …

A Characterization Of A Class Of Non-Binary Matroids, James G. Oxley Jan 1990

A Characterization Of A Class Of Non-Binary Matroids, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

A well-known result of Tutte is that U2,4, the 4-point line, is the only non-binary matroid M such that, for every element e, both Mβe and M e, the deletion and contraction of e from M, are binary. This paper characterizes those non-binary matroids M such that, for every element e, Mβe or M e is binary. © 1990.

The Smallest Rounded Sets Of Binary Matroids, James G. Oxley, Talmage James Reid Jan 1990

The Smallest Rounded Sets Of Binary Matroids, James G. Oxley, Talmage James Reid

Faculty Publications

It was proved by Oxley that U2,4 is the only non-trivial 3-connected matroid N such that, whenever a 3-connected matroid M has an N-minor and x and y are elements of M, there is an N-minor of M using {x, y} . This paper establishes the corresponding result for binary matroids by proving that if M and N above must both be binary, then there are exactly two possibilities for N: the rank-three and rank-four wheels. © 1990, Academic Press Limited. Comparison Of Ion-Selective Electrode Methods For Determining Potassium Q/I Relationships, Jian Wang, R. E. Farrell, A. D. Scott Jan 1990

Comparison Of Ion-Selective Electrode Methods For Determining Potassium Q/I Relationships, Jian Wang, R. E. Farrell, A. D. Scott

Faculty Publications

Different methods of determining quantity-intensity (Q/I) parameters with ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) were developed and evaluated with suspensions of three Iowa soils and a successive-additions method of varying the added K+. The ISE methods, which were categorized on the basis of the electrochemical cell involved, were tested for their applicability to soil suspensions. Specifically, single-ISE, dual-ISE, and triple-ISE methods were compared to ascertain the best means of determining the ΔK (gain or loss of dissolved K) and CR [concentration ratio: CK/(CCa+Mg)1/2] terms of the Q/I relationships. It was concluded that using the triple-ISE method offers the best means of carrying out …

Videomicroscopic Comparison Of Bull Sperm And Leukocyte Chromosome Areas As Related To Gender, J. E. Chandler, V. Tirado, R. W. Adkinson Jan 1990

Videomicroscopic Comparison Of Bull Sperm And Leukocyte Chromosome Areas As Related To Gender, J. E. Chandler, V. Tirado, R. W. Adkinson

Faculty Publications

Chromosomal areas from metaphase spreads of male bovine leukocytes were digitized and sex chromosomes identified using videomicroscopy. Autosomal areas were ranked in descending order within a cell and assigned to two categories based on alternating rank. X and Y chromosome areas were assigned to respective categories. Areas were divided by 4 to make their sum equivalent to sperm DNA content. Data were analyzed before and after inclusion of sex chromosomal areas. Before X and Y inclusion, rank contributed to difference in chromosomal areas. Rank by category interaction and category effects did not contribute to area variation. After X and Y …

Sympathy, Gender, And The Writing Of Value In Late Eighteenth Century English Letters., Lucinda Cole Jan 1990

Sympathy, Gender, And The Writing Of Value In Late Eighteenth Century English Letters., Lucinda Cole

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study of sympathy is best described as an historically-grounded feminist critique in response to a contemporary critical debate. Recently, "sympathy," "compassion," and "care" have been promoted by many scholars interested in positing alternatives to a clearly masculinist ethical tradition derived from Kant, Hegel, and others. Yet missing from this work is a critical examination of the ethical tradition extending from Hume's writings in the eighteenth century to Max Scheler's in our own. My major purpose within this context is to demonstrate how sympathy functions as a major term in systems of value no less male-biased than the ethics of …

Burial Diagenesis Of The Smackover Formation, Southeast Mississippi Salt Basin., E Heydari-L. Jan 1990

Burial Diagenesis Of The Smackover Formation, Southeast Mississippi Salt Basin., E Heydari-L.

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Smackover Formation in the southeastern Mississippi salt basin has been buried to maximum depths of 3 to over 6 km and subjected to maximum temperatures of 100 to over 200 $\sp\circ$C. This formation contains a lower laminated mudstone member, a middle mudstone to wackestone member, and an upper grainstone member. In Clarke County, the upper Smackover member exhibits a north-south gradient in dolomite content, original mineralogy of ooids, and lithology. These regional gradients resulted from an increase in Mg/Ca concentrations of Smackover sea water northward across the carbonate platform. Shallow burial diagenesis ($<$4.5 km) was dominated by calcite cementation. Calcite cements in Clarke County are luminescently zoned and exhibit a consistent sequence of luminescent zonation. However, the intensity of luminescence and number of zones in the calcite cements vary across the county. This is due to variation in the chemical composition of the host carbonate rock and local hydrology. Deep burial diagenesis ($>$4.5 km and $<$7 km) is dominated by calcitization of anhydrite, precipitation of post-bitumen calcite cement, and formation of elemental sulfur. The chemical composition of post-bitumen calcite cement suggests precipitation from a pore water similar to the present Smackover brine. The high temperature replacement of anhydrite by calcite, the presence of post-bitumen calcite cement, the sulfur isotopic composition of sulfates and elemental sulfur, and the high concentration of hydrogen sulfide indicate that rapid thermochemical sulfate reduction of solid sulfate is taking place in the deep part of the Mississippi salt basin at temperatures of $>$150 $\sp\circ$C. …

Constructing Isospectral But Nonisometric Riemannian Manifolds., Sheng Chen Jan 1990

Constructing Isospectral But Nonisometric Riemannian Manifolds., Sheng Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this paper, we examine the examples of isospectral but non-isometric Riemannian manifolds given by Milnor, Ikeda, and Vigneras. Of these, only Milnor's example is accounted for by Sunada's method of constructing isospectral manifolds, and even then only as an "unnatural" construction.

Authorial Introductions: Presentations Of The Self As Author In Prefaces And Autobiographies. (Volumes I And Ii)., Laurie Frances Leach Jan 1990

Authorial Introductions: Presentations Of The Self As Author In Prefaces And Autobiographies. (Volumes I And Ii)., Laurie Frances Leach

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the prefaces and autobiographies of creative writers as "authorial introductions," textual spaces in which writers present themselves to their readers as authors. It consists of three main parts. Part One concerns autobiographical prefaces by two writers, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Mary Shelley, who did not write autobiographies and who were defensive about the autobiographical content of their prefaces. Both writers were ambivalent about authorship and hesitant about bringing themselves "forward in print," but within the limits of their prefaces, they were able to speak autobiographically and portray themselves as authors. Part Two examines the autobiographies and prefaces of …

Age Of Onset And Duration Variables: Relationship To Primary And Secondary Psychopathology Of Bulimia Nervosa., Darlene Broussard Witcher Jan 1990

Age Of Onset And Duration Variables: Relationship To Primary And Secondary Psychopathology Of Bulimia Nervosa., Darlene Broussard Witcher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Over the past decade there has been growing concern about the syndrome of bulimia nervosa. Current theoretical models of the etiology and symptomatology of bulimia predict that the psychopathology of the eating disorder worsens over time. The specific purposes of this study was to examine the effect of onset age and duration of the disorder on the primary and secondary psychopathology of bulimia nervosa at the time of presentation for treatment. The results suggest that binging and purging worsen with increasing duration and older age of onset, accompanied by increased weight and greater distortion of body size estimation. Furthermore, subjects …

Assessment Of Social Competence In Populations Of Learning-Disabled, Behaviorally Disordered And Normal Adolescents., Teresa Jo Scardino Jan 1990

Assessment Of Social Competence In Populations Of Learning-Disabled, Behaviorally Disordered And Normal Adolescents., Teresa Jo Scardino

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present investigation was designed to examine normal vs. impaired adolescents' social competence according to self, teacher, and parent report. Although the importance of social competence has been established with child and adult populations, few studies have assessed social competence of adolescents. Social competence of learning disabled (LD), behaviorally disordered (BD), and regular education (RE) adolescents was assessed. Nineteen BD, 20 LD, and 66 RE completed self-report measures of social skills and perceived communication/conflict with parents, and sociometric rankings of peers. Teachers of each participating student completed a teacher report measure of the adolescent's social skill, and parents of each …

Analysis For Creep, Shrinkage And Temperature Effects On Expansion Joint Movements In Composite Prestressed Concrete Bridges., Keith Joseph Rebello Jan 1990

Analysis For Creep, Shrinkage And Temperature Effects On Expansion Joint Movements In Composite Prestressed Concrete Bridges., Keith Joseph Rebello

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A rigorous and efficient analytical model to predict the long-term deformation behavior of bridges with multiple, precast, pretensioned, prestressed concrete girders supporting cast-in-place-concrete deck slabs, was developed. The analytical procedure uses the finite element method with three-dimensional 20-node isoparametric elements to realistically model bridge geometry. Time dependent effects due to load and temperature history, creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete are included in the analysis. Creep and shrinkage strains are evaluated at different times using the more commonly used procedures, namely, the ACI-209, Bazant-Panula II and CEB-FIP procedures. Temperature strains are calculated from an assumed typical bridge temperature distribution based …

The Relationship Of Serum Killing, Phagocytosis And Oxidant Production By Bovine Monocyte-Derived Macrophages To Intracellular Survival Of Brucella Abortus., Denise Ida Bounous Jan 1990

The Relationship Of Serum Killing, Phagocytosis And Oxidant Production By Bovine Monocyte-Derived Macrophages To Intracellular Survival Of Brucella Abortus., Denise Ida Bounous

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Functional activities of monocyte-derived macrophages and serum killing ability in a population of Brucella abortus-naive cows were evaluated. The ability of these macrophages to phagocytize and control intracellular survival of B.abortus and to produce oxidant was measured. Fresh normal bovine sera killed significantly more B.abortus than reactor serum or fetal bovine serum. When heated to destroy complement, none of the sera were capable of significant killing. The ability of sera from B.abortus-naive cows to kill the bacteria was normally distributed, with all animals within $\pm$ 2 sd of the mean. Phagocytosis of bacteria opsonized with autologous or reactor sera was …

The Social Integration-Deviance Hypothesis In Sociology: The Case Of Teenage Fertility., Stephen Joseph Caldas Jan 1990

The Social Integration-Deviance Hypothesis In Sociology: The Case Of Teenage Fertility., Stephen Joseph Caldas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation is to construct and test an elaborated version of the social integration-deviance model. Social integration theory traces its origins to Emile Durkheim, who postulated the existence of two forms of social integration, today known as normative and functional integration. In his classic work Suicide (1897/1951) Durkheim first empirically tested his theory of social integration, though arguably only for normative integration. Others have since elaborated on his theory, and have tested various versions of it (Hirschi, 1969; Collette, Webb, & Smith, 1979). The current work conceptualizes teenage childbearing in the United States as deviancy from an …

Interaction Properties Of Geogrids In Reinforced Soil Walls, Testing And Analysis., Khalid A. Farrag Jan 1990

Interaction Properties Of Geogrids In Reinforced Soil Walls, Testing And Analysis., Khalid A. Farrag

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The considerable development of the geosynthetics and their increasing use in soil reinforcement made it necessary to develop methods of measuring the interaction properties and modeling load transfer in reinforced soil structures. The current testing procedures demonstrate significant limitations related to the testing methodology and data interpretation. In order to address these limitations, a pull-out box and direct shear box were constructed. The design of these boxes overcomes most of theses limitations and provides the capability of conducting displacement-rate controlled tests for the evaluation of short-term behavior of the soil-reinforcement system, and load-controlled tests to evaluate their time-dependent performance. The …

Ecology Of Erwinia Chrysanthemi, Causal Agent Of Bacterial Stem And Root Rot On Sweet Potato And Etiology Of Souring., Valmir Duarte Jan 1990

Ecology Of Erwinia Chrysanthemi, Causal Agent Of Bacterial Stem And Root Rot On Sweet Potato And Etiology Of Souring., Valmir Duarte

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During three seasons, mother storage roots of Beauregard sweetpotato were inoculated with Erwinia chrysanthemi in March, and the pathogen was recovered from them the day they were bedded, 7 days later, and at the first and second pullings of slips as well as from underground stems at harvest in September and October of the first and second transplantings, respectively. Little stem rot occurred in the fields during the three seasons. Thirteen strains of E. chrysanthemi, 8 isolated originally from sweetpotato and 5 from other hosts, and one strain of E. carotovora subsp. carotovora were inoculated on sweetpotato and 12 different …
